I'm not trying to sound mean or anything, but I would rather not do those things. I don't know how to use the BIOS since I have never really had the need to go in there and do anything. I'll just see what MSI support says. I'm not trying to wimp out or anything, but I would rather just leave it where it is and RMA it. Besides, I've been reading around on the internet and from the few people that have had the same problem, almost all of them ended up having to do an RMA.

SizeDrip, I understand, which is why I haven't posted the details of how I did it, as it involves more low level hacking than just re-flashing the BIOS.

The Intel ME Toolkit I was talking about doesn't seem to be available, I haven't found it yet, and after reading these slides (slide 11), it looks like Intel / vendors hide it from being found for download on purpose:

Secret of Intel Management Engine by Igor Skochinsky
    http://www.slideshare.net/codeblue_jp/igor-skochinsky-enpub

Something else comes to mind after reading this, there have been reports of Windows 10 mucking with BIOS areas, and the Intel ME would be a logical choice since it deals with boot handling.

Have either of you with the Yellow! for the Intel Management Engine installed Windows 10 on that laptop?

No, I have Windows 8.1 installed as I heard it was best to wait for awhile before upgrading to Windows 10.

so far so good, only one crash after windows update, prob issue with the boot but otherwise im pretty stable with no random crashes during use. If this keeps up for a week then im going to put the issue to bed before contacting seller. So far it seems MEI is something my motherboard can live without (thank god) but i will keep updating here in the meantime. i figure im so far into the warranty waiting another week cant hurt.

you cant get windows 10 with this issue, at least not through the automatic updater thing, it causes an error near the end of setup prob during one its special restarts that causes everything to revert

darkshade, you do need it, and keep making excuses for the failures due to it. :)

It's not a big deal, work with MSI to fix, you will be surprised how quick it's over and you have all devices working.

    RMA = Return Merchandise Authorization
I don't really know who made the term but it means an authorized number is required before returning a merchandise back to its vendor.

RMA = Return Material Authorization (RMA), Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA), Return Goods Authorization (RGA), Return Authorization (RA).

All mean about the same thing in different contexts - you are contacting the supplier (internal / external) about a problem with the material / merchandise and wish to return it for replacement, repair, or refund / credit, and you are requesting authorization / confirmation / notice to make them aware of the return shipment and authorize it with a Return Authorization confirmation ticket / number / case number.

You can Google about definitions online easily.

    define RMA

Or google and search as a question like this:
    What is RMA?
    how do I RMA?

Wikipedia is a good first source to check as well, and they have a search plugin to make it more convenient in the browser (firefox).

    Wikipedia search for RMA:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=rma&title=Special:Search&fulltext=Search

This time it was a ways down the list :)
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Return_merchandise_authorization

Definition - What does Return Material Authorization (RMA) mean?
    https://www.techopedia.com/definition/12246/return-material-authorization-rma

Example: MSI End User RMA Request Form
    https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/rma_form.aspx

you guys will get a kick outta this: i seem to have lost nahmic software during the 8.1 reinstall and i cant seem to find the software online. Its not really that big of a deal methinks to bother looking into what a firmwire update entails tbh but its strange that you cant just download the software somewhere

i was wondering why my system sounded great regardless of gaming or watching lol

I have previously searched google and saw that item but I wasn't sure if it was the same thing. Thanks for the confirmation. What I did not know was that it was useless without the modded bios/vbios, do again thanks for saving me some $$$.

I wonder if any of you GT 80 owners have paid attention to the usage of the two fans on your laptop.

Of late, I have noticed that even when the GPUs are turned off and when I am not running any applications, fan 2 switches on and off intermittently - every few minutes. I monitored the CPU temperatures and of course they reduce marginally when fan 2 is switched on. Fan 1 is running non-stop as you would imagine.

I do not see the CPU temperatures increase in fan 2's absence - which is why I am not sure why there is such a pattern of fan 2 switching on and off at regular intervals even when there is no extra load on the CPU.

FYI - ambient temperature is 70F or slightly less.

Any input would be much appreciated! Thank you.

I don't think you need a modded bois because the GT80 isn't power locked but without a modded vbois on the 980m SLI you can't exceed what the stock brick can deliver. With an unlocked CPU such as the 6820HK and 980m or 980 it will be useful when overclocking.

i just wish we had some sort of fan control that worked. the best i found was MSI silent mode but its not optimized for two fans so it only really half works.

MSI Silent fan control works perfectly and you can set each individual fan duty cycle at each EC temp setting to run how you wish.

the one i downloaded from the msi site did pretend to do said things(like it had the option for CPU temp and fan range AND GPU temp and fan range) BUT but it really only had one fan control that actually worked (the GPU) this caused issues where the GPU would be stable at 31 but the CPU would be ramped up 50+. not huge values but i got rid of silent option as fast as i could in the circumstances. maybe you could share the link for your version and il see if its different.

humm you must realize that the CPU has priority control over both fans since its shares both exhaust sides, At the same time while at rest the GPU fan will shut down (Fan 2) so when setting this you must keep it in mind. If you want to see how it works run 3dMark in a windowed mode and play with the settings while monitoring dragon gaming center. During the testing play with each individual fan and you will see the values change when applied.

Hmm... then you know what? it could just be a side effect of the MEI issue, i did read that it had some part to play in fan control.. I noticed i cant get programs like speed fan to work

I am wondering what you mean by Silent mode and where I can find it. I know the different modes available in the MSI Dragon Gaming Center, which are Green, Comfort, and Sport. I do not see Silent there.

@ryzeki @GTVEVO @hmscott do any of you guys use UEFI with GPT partition instead of MBR with fastboot enabled? i have from some desktop mobo that with fastboot enabled, it makes it harder to get into bios.

also any unlocked bios for this machine?

So, ive been talking to MSI support and they say to try backing up my data and doing a factory reset. Any idea if that would actually fix the problem? I'm one of the people with the IMEI (Intel management engine interface) problem.

I am pretty sure the GT80 is GTP, UEFI with fastboot enabled from the factory. Getting into the bios is extremely easy by just tapping on the del key during boot and never any problems with it.

As GTVEVO mentioned, I think GT80 indeed is GPT from the get go. If I remember, I will check tonight when I get home. But I have no issues either to get into BIOS, as also mentioned by GTVEVO, only need to press DEL during post. That's how I got into updating the BIOS quickly.

If the machine was working before the first sleep error occurred, it might be possible that a full reset might help. It is best to do the steps provided by support, if only to cross possible issues off. If it doesn't work, they will continue with more suggestions until they decide it is better to send the machine off for RMA if the issue is not fixable.

Best of luck man, hopefully we can find the solution to such issues.

maybe its because they were trying to do with PCIE SSD fast boot so its hard getting into bios then, although i can't picture how thats happening, maybe too fast? LOL

anyway thanks for the quick response, msi gt80 will likely be my next machine so far specs looking pretty good, just waiting for some 6820HK result to see if theres any TDP restriction.

So far, things are looking very bright for 6820HK regarding TDP restriction, so you should be getting an awesome machine :)

I am debating if I should keep my titan or sell it to change for a new model, but I am actually very happy with my current GT80. So it feels like too much of a hassle just to get a faster CPU which in my case, I don't use that much except for gaming.

I may try ClassicShell as I play around with Win8. Ultimately, I'll be installing Win7 to be compatible with some of my older programs.

Good to know my temps aren't abnormal.

SizeDrip, like GTVEVO said, do what support asks, they have their needs to check / fulfill before moving on to the next step, so even if it doesn't work it will get you that much closer to the next step.

They may ask for a BIOS install, to clear the Intel ME BIOS firmware included with the MSI BIOS, and may ask for an EC install as well.

The MSI Support requests may fix it and keep you from needing an RMA.

After you backup your data and have a fresh restore on the laptop, you are safe to send in your laptop for RMA, preserving your personal data outside the laptop :)

    Killer Performance Suite 1.1.57.1617 BETA

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/killer-performance-suite-1-1-57-1617-beta.783051/

    NEW FEATURES - 1.1.57.1617
    Killer Network Manager/Killer Service:
    • Added Speed Test/Bandwidth Estimator tool. This tool will estimate your available network speed and fill in the Upload and Download values in the Killer Network Manager's Settings page automatically upon running. To do this, go to the Settings page and select 'Update Speed'.
    • Lightning bolt icon is shown in the bottom right of application if you have not set the network bandwidth on a particular network connection. You can see the message by hovering over the lightning bolt icon. Clicking on the icon will take you too the Settings page so you can resolve the warning.
    • Added loading/splash screen. If you close Killer Network Manager and then open it from desktop icon, Splash screen is displayed to help program load resources before displaying. This increases Killer Network Manager responsiveness some.
    • Added Application 'PIN' feature to Network Manager Applications page. You can now pin one or multiple applications to the top of the Applications page for easy monitoring.
    • Applications page now has Sort arrows to help indicate sort order.
    KNOWN ISSUES

    • New strings are NOT translated. Bandwidth messages and new buttons are in English only at this time.
    • PIN feature is not persistent. If you reboot or otherwise leave the Killer Network Manager page, pinned applications will no longer be pinned.

reviews out for samsung 950 pro single drive and raid 0, http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-950-pro-ssd,4313-2.html

however at current time it seems only Z170 chipset support PCIE raid 0 via PCH, so that means MSI will have to have a raid card type of hardware raid connect through PCIE via PCH, then manually raid the two PCIE SSDs in raid 0 which is sitll fast, but won't have write cache enabled, what a disappointment. UNLESS mobile chipset also support pcie raid 0 with NVMe protocol.

further more, it seems in raid 0 some performance drop over single drive.. makes little sense.

those ranking website is not trust worthy lol, a good computer/laptop only shines when someone really capable of bringing out it's maximum potential, combined with multiple factors such as great bios unlocked with a ton of option, capable of holding high clocks with low voltage, low voltage leak, cherry silicon chip, great support for GPUs etc etc.

a lot of laptops are locked down especially in bios, and most of these are compared at stock settings which is kind of pointless for an overclocking laptop.

The release this year is really a turning point, a few of us expressed worry that the desktop replacement development world would not deliver going forward but its shaping into one of the strongest. Alienware is delivering finally, MSI with the GT80S revision and the Clevo 870dm madness, all are sticking to what they know and do best while giving us choices and creating manufacture competition. Enjoy it while it lasts.

So I reinstalled Windows 8.1 yesterday, and I realized the upgrade to Windows 10 logo is gone! Can anyone help me with this?

"Adobe Photoshop Heavy benchmark shows how heavy loads are accelerated by higher-performing SSDs. The difference between Samsung's 512GB 950 Pro and 2TB 850 Pro is right around 11 seconds."

"The number of NVMe capable notebooks is very small but eventually the 950 Pro will work as an upgrade to lower quality m.2 SSDs shipping in OEM systems."
