Yes but the 951 will stay at high temperatures in a confined space which is probably really ban not only for the ssd but also for surrounding components...

Look at the difference in endurance between the two drives.(same link ad one you provided)

Yup, that's the trade off, speed vs temperature.

IDK which I would go for, but I am thinking Door #3

Are you talking about this graph? The SM951 temp drops after completing the transfer, the 950 Pro isn't done with the xfer yet so the temp stays up at 98c, that isn't 950 Pro endurance, that is 950 Pro thermal throttled slowness...

    pic_disp.php.jpg

The graph does bring up another point, the idle temps. It's hard to tell in the short start of the video, but it looked like the temps started at around 70c, which the graph also shows at the tail end for the SM951 - it has had time to cool while waiting for the 950 Pro to finish the xfer.

So, watch for your 950 Pro temps at idle and during long copy's, duplicates, and builds, and please let us know what you are seeing at the extreme's and how it is real world transfer speeds during normal usage :)

milkydude12, sounds good, please do a Sandra memory throughput test before you upgrade and after.

    For me I got a big boost, 17GB/sec to 23GB/sec, moving from 1600mhz to 2133mhz in the GT80 SLI-263

The throttling started at around 50GB, but in a less ventilated spot the throttling temp of 98c could be reached sooner. And, once reached without ventilation the heat will be retained longer.

As in the GT80, the M.2 slots are right next to and under the CPU and Primary GPU. When I am pushing both hard doing batch jobs, the M.2 drives temps rise, even when I am not doing much IO. They are thermally coupled, and could affect CPU throttling - added heat to the CPU might raise the CPU temp into the throttle zone.

M.2 SSD temps are as important to watch as CPU/GPU now :)

Hey guys, I have a question regarding my 3 monitor setup. I have my GT80 monitor, and 2 VGA monitors hooked up to it, I'm using a VGA to HDMI adapter for my left monitor, and my right monitor is using a VGA to Mini Display port adapter. Problem though, my right monitor (the one with the VGA to Mini Display Adapter) keeps flickering, as in, every 3 minutes, the monitor will flick to a black screen 3 times before returning back to normal. My left monitor (the one with the HDMI adapter) is fine, it never flickers.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Oh, and a couple of things

1 - My BIOS and my Nvidia Drivers are completely up to date.

2 - There are no loose wires anywhere, the adapter are firmly secure and I have triple checked them.

lmao 950pro slower than sm951, way to go new gen ssd! yet they advertise the sequential read faster than sm951 which maybe true in some short burst scenario. just like samsung, only market about numbers and look =/ which is why i'd never go for galaxy phone.

@ryzeki do u have 6820HK? does it go well above 4.2ghz?

The short answer is: yes and no; there is no set answer for all laptops / desktops / applications for either the 950 Pro or SM951, it depends on the use and environment it is installed.

And, since the components and laptop are all new, including the GT80S, we don't have good data on which to make an informed decision right now.

Right now it is all about sharing the data from testing with them in specific environments, so we can make our own informed decisions.

Both the SM951 and 950 Pro are awesome components, but every component has it's limitations, and proper applications.

We haven't seen either run in the GT80S yet. The GT80S and the 950 Pro's are just now shipping, so we need to get some reports back on Idle temp?, load performance under 98c?, and load performance over 98c?

What are the leveling temps of both SSD's after a few large xfer sessions - copies - builds - other IO intensive tasks like working in VM's hosted on these 2 SSD's? Do the M.2 SSD's cool down quickly enough between tasks to not ramp up into throttling too quickly?

Do RAID0 M.2 SSD pairs heat each other up due to close proximity? Is the Idle temp of both higher when run together? In the GT80 this is especially important as the M.2 SSD's are physically overlapping each other.

What is the temperature coupling between the M.2 SSD(s) and the nearby CPU / GPU components?

If we are heating up the M.2 SSD with heavy GPU/CPU action - like during gaming - or long rendering / editing - does that increase the idle SSD temps over extended session time?

And, the reverse, does heavy IO work heat up the SSD and transfer that heat to the CPU increasing the temp on heavy CPU loads such that it pushes the CPU into throttling earlier than without the M.2 heat load? The same goes if the M.2 slot is next to / under the GPU.

These questions aren't about a quick test and readings, it is a question of heat build up over time for normal use sessions, a few hours to all day. The initial starting from a cold laptop tests are useful, but testing over a use session, seeing if temps continue to increase due to heat not being dissipated - the areas with the M.2 SSD's aren't well ventilated in the GT80.

I would talk to the seller and mention your concern and ask if you can swap / return them if they run too hot for your use, allowing you 30 days for testing, and that way you can protect yourself should it not work out.

unityole, that's been the bane of new CPU's all along, the applications don't get rebuilt/linked to take advantage of new instructions and rebuilt libraries for weeks to years after a new CPU release.

Benchmarks usually get redone quicker, but not the day to day applications. Firefox and Chrome are the exception, and any other continuous development products moving forward - they all get rebuilt frequently for rolling changes and bug fixes.

But, even so these rapid updates are usually patches, not a complete build, so it might take a major release before the whole application is sped up, which could still be months.

Interesting for some reason on MSI's website for both of the GT80s models they have two different video cards in the title one says gtx 970m sli or gtx 980 sli and the other gtx 980m sli or gtx 980 sli but when you click on one and go to specs it just has the one option for 970m or 980m weird

Hey guys, quick question. Will we be able to update our cards to the 980 from 980m? Not sure with how this all works. Or is everyone just going to sell their current models and buy the newest one?

No, most people wont move as the 980 is not a cost effective upgrade for those models that can take it but have a 980M already.

OK, just had something weird happen with my GT80, not sure if I should be worried. Screen is set to turn off after 10mins. I've not got any settings enable to tell the laptop to go to sleep after a certain period of time. After 10mins the screen turned off. Then for some reason when I moved the mouse it would not turn back on. Keyboard lights etc all active, but I could not turn the screen back on via any means. Long-press on the power button to turn the laptop off, then booted it up just fine.

Anyone else experienced this or is it just a Windows / driver "feature" ?.....

Running Win8.1, fully up to date, and currently on the 353.62 Nvidia drivers as anything after that is causing driver restarts under Windows....

Other than this my GT80 so far has been running just fine. Its about 2 months old now.

I have a similar problem with my GT70-2PE. If the system goes to sleep (via closing the lid or via windows) the laptop's keyboard and trackpad will refuse to work. Any external mouses or keyboards will still work normally, but the internal keyboard and the trackpad will not work until i reboot the system.

This particular problem could be related to the one you are having... have you tried using external devices?

yes and no, cpu still had great improvement but stopped since sandy and after that it really stopped moving forward much, unless use linux and compile and take advantage of new instruction set. with linux it is possible to fully use the cpu and get much faster, but then legacy support drops hard.

ALL the new MSI GT80s machines ship with Windows 10.

8.1 is no longer an option.

That said, you can install 8.1 on your machine if you have your own copy of Windows.

If you buy from a boutique vendor, that allows upgrades / changes to stock configuration, you can request Windows 7/8.1 :)

Interesting... It seems like the problem is the drivers. It is a rare behaviour but some NVIDIA Drivers have been known to cause similar problems.
My suggestion would be to try with different drivers.
Knowing that your driver build is older you could try with other builds to see if the cause can be isolated to the drivers.

For those of you with Windows 7/8.1/10, disabling Telemetry / Windows 10 Upgrade has performance / interference benefits.

Here is an example, people are searching for solutions to Windows 7/8.1/10 performance problems on the internet, and finding the list of Windows 7/8.1/10 updates to block hosted here on NBR, and fixing those performance problems by uninstalling all of the listed updates and hiding them from future installation:

Anyone have an idea what the performance increase might be for GTX 980 SLI vs 980M SLI and I have a hard copy of Windows 7 so could I put that on my machine so I don't have to deal with Windows 10 thanks for any help

Yeah i configured mine with it and decided to go with 2400 even though the price is higher... Also replaced the 1tb hdd with a quietier 2.5" 120 gb 850 evo ssd... lowers weight and power usage too! :)

The performance in GPU limited situations will be the same as the jump from a single 980M to 980.

Yup, get larger size of SSD if you can to avoid the need of not having enough capacity. :D

If I have them add the SSD they may not be able to copy the recovery partition off...

Also, if I have them load windows 8.1, I may also lose the recovery partition? Do they give me the key and disk for 8.1? Isn't MSI supposed to have a special version of 8.1 configured for their system?

Aside from the Gold Key Caps, it looks like the MSI Gaming Accessories Bundle is no longer available.

I hope they add the promotion again. That's $100-$150 value added to your purchase.
