I'm not sure if this was posted before because I didn't follow up with recent posts but NCIXUS is already taking preorders for MSI GT80S GTX 980 sli:
    http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=120542&vpn=GT80S 6QF-074US&manufacture=MSI
Yup only 6k$... I think it's a little bit pricey. For that much you can dekstop with extreme cpu and multiple gpus and still have money left for decent gaming laptop.
    Here found some europe reseller:

Same place trying to charge 4500 for the 002 model that they don't even have, I wouldn't trust this as a real price but over pricing because they have no idea. Vendors will usually post info as soon as its released with US spec so not to worry.

"PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THE MANUFACTURER DOES NOT PROVIDE A RECOVERY DISK TO RE-INSTALL WINDOWS AT A LATER DATE. IF YOU CHOOSE TO UPGRADE THE PRIMARY HARD DRIVE OR CHOOSE OUR “CLEAN INSTALL" SERVICE, YOUR DRIVE WILL NOT INCLUDE A RECOVERY PARTITION FROM WHICH RECOVERY DISKS CAN BE MADE- IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU PURCHASE THE RECOVERY DISK FOR $15. PLEASE EMAIL ME BACK DIRECTLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF YOU WISH TO INCLUDE THIS ITEM WITH YOUR ORDER. THE ITEM MAY BE PURCHASED AT A LATER DATE; HOWEVER, SEPARATE SHIPPING CHARGES WILL APPLY."

annother way for them to make money, although reinstalling window is easy enough and i'd never install via cd anyway, that takes forever. i just use usb 3 and install windows under 3 mins and finish all my software etc and finally create a fresh clean image.

That's another reason to buy the MSI box configurations at Retail :)

Or stay with the standard parts with the MSI OS install / recovery disks if available.

Some builds never have the MSI OS image, the parts are put into a barebones frame, and built up at the shop, including the OS image.

There are benefits to going both ways, Retail build or Custom Build, but there are lots of little details most people don't notice, like this one about no standard MSI OS install / recovery if you customize drives.

The other detail is that all your RMA work is done by them instead of MSI. MSI RMA can be slow, but so can Custom support.

Happy people both ways, unhappy people both ways, it's a choice that affects your long term ownership either way.

Mason, have you already ordered your GT80? I can't order mine for another month so wanted to see what you decided on xotic or gen (or if there are any other deals out there.)

It happened to me once too a long while ago. Maybe it got fixed with the latest EC firmware? Anyways, It only happened to me once so far, so I think indeed it was driver related.

After uninstalling, and then reinstalling the latest drivers, make sure your synaptics icon is available on the task bar, right click it, and enable tap to click or something like that. If it's enabled, disable and then re enable.

I am using the latest drivers from the MSI site, recently updated for my model, and everything is working fine.

Yes but installing Windows 8.1 will remove the recovery as well, right?

Don't install windows 8.1. At this point, it might generate more issues than not, because you are not using the same hardware as us, which was designed with win 8 in mind. Not sure how well some drivers will work out for you.

Keep windows 10, learn your way through it. Disable what you don't want. Personally, aside from the whole data gathering going on, Windows 10 is finally 100% stable for me. It's not really better than 8 in my opinion, and I use classic shell because the start menu is horrible (just as windows 8's was), but all my devices and drivers are up to date and working.

Except nvidia, because they suck. Which is an issue you will most likely NOT encounter as only few titans are affected.

Tell them what you want. If you want to keep the original Windows 10 Recovery partition on that 1TB drive, ask them to use MSI BurnRecovery to create a backup on a 32GB USB 3.0 drive and sell that to you as well.

They will need to create the MSI BurnRecovery flash drive using the original OS install, before they blow it away by installing Windows 8.1 and before replacing with new drives.

Then when you get the laptop, you will have Windows 8.1 installed, with a MS Windows 8.1 Recovery Partition - ask for that as well. And the Windows 10 MSI BurnRecovery bootable flash drive to install Windows 10 later when you are ready for it.

If they can't do a Windows 8.1 F3 Recovery partition, then you will need to get their USB recovery flash drive - and use that to recover Windows 8.1 should you run into trouble.

You want to have 2 Windows Licenses, the Windows 10 license that came with the laptop burned into the BIOS, and the Windows 8.1 license you are purchasing and having installed separately. Make sure they confirm you have that.

Windows 10 moving forward, soon, will be getting a large new feature pack, starting over with a bunch of new features - and bugs, and things will be continuing like that for a while.

If you want to remain stable over the next 6-9 months Windows 8.1 is the way to go.

And, as you said, if he installs Windows 8.1, he will have the same build as the rest of us, which is running better than Windows 10 for everyone, including you :)

@mason2smart - if you do stay with Windows 10, you still would want the shop to create the MSI BurnRecovery USB 3.0 32GB drive. If you are changing drives they will still use their Windows install, and erase the recovery partition on the 1TB drive.

Whatever configuration you end up getting make sure you know what built OS is installed, what Windows licenses come with it (the activate codes), and have recovery media for each.

The only problem is that some new machines are unable to properly use older windows as efficiently. I think his best bet is to use windows 10 for now, but definitely everyone should always backup their machines. I am amazed at how few people prepare in the event of catastrophic failures hahah :)

ryzeki, the Windows NVMe driver from Intel is issued with the same version for Windows 7, 8.1, 10, so no difference there.

Intel Windows NVMe driver 1.3.0.1007 x32-x64.zip
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/do...ate-Drive-Data-Center-Family-for-NVMe-Drivers

Same for the Intel INF chipset driver for Skylake, so no difference there:

Intel® Chipset Device Software (INF Update Utility) (latest)
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20775/Intel-Chipset-Device-Software-INF-Update-Utility-

What hardware support required for the MSI GT80S isn't in Windows 8.1 that is in Windows 10 only?

Have you noticed any improvement in your benchmarks in Windows 10 vs Windows 8.1?

I've been watching the new MSI GT80S Support areas, and there aren't any files there, except "HelpDesk". No Windows 10 drivers / utilities - so if you are looking to reinstall without a MSI BurnRecovery backup, you will need to go to the previous GT80 model Support pages that have Windows 10 files - along with Windows 8.1 files.

@mason2smart , that's why you make sure you get the MSI Windows 10 BurnRecovery USB 3.0 32GB flash drive too, in case you need to install the original out of the box Windows 10 to verify hardware issues - for example.

windows 10 has a much better PCIE SSD performance than windows 8, even with the same driver.

unityole, it was only 1 test of the storage benchmarking, everything else was the same speed :)

Can you please repost that article link?

You do bring up a good point, we should run benchmarks on the GT80S's under Windows 8.1/7 and Windows 10, to see if there are any differences on the new GT80S hardware.

Oh I wasn't talking specifically about an MSI laptop, just a lenovo I am toying with. Technically it works, but there is something odd with actual performance. I don't know how newer systems will behave with previous versions of windows, and I tend to run virtual machines instead for specific software that needs to be used on older windows systems.

In the end, just because there is a driver, doesn't mean it will work hahaha :) (right nvidia?!?) :p

But for the time being, as far as performance, I haven't noticed any increase or decrease in performance. My benches seem to be the same scores all around. General usage is just as snappy, so that's why I don't see much difference between 10 and 8, specially since I use classic shell. I actually like 10 a bit less. Just less configurable etc.

If they do bring DX12 for win 8 for some reason, I am totally downgrading LOL.

sequential speed isnt all that important when its that fast. biggest improvement comes from latency of 4k write at QD1 and performance at it. check tweaktown.com and type in their search for win10 and win 8 comparison

Yes, but you would need a shopping cart to haul it around

$6k is too much, and I thought I was estimating on the high side at $4599... the 980m SLI-002 GT80S is only $3399.

Speaking of Snappiness, there is 1 thing I remembered that Windows 10 may have exclusive for Skylake processors, Intel ‘Speed Shift’ Technology

Meaker, there are new INF drivers for Skylake and it's chipsets, for NVMe, for Thunderbolt 3.0, for HDMI 2.0 - for Windows 7/8.1.

Updates for CPU features, instruction sets, and new hardware still come out for Windows 7/8.1. Also for Linux / Solaris kernels. Speed Shift should be no different. Even if "Other OS's" weren't mentioned in the presentation materials. :)

CPU / chipset features are needed not only for the desktop / mobile, but also for Servers.

Intel wants to sell chips, and if only 10% runs Windows 10, that won't be enough to make their quarterly numbers :)

Mine comes in on Thursday. Can't wait...

If anyone has any questions about the Skylake GT80s, let me know.

I will answer the questions the best I can. (Keep in mind I am not as technologically savvy as many of you are).

I'll be using the MSI mostly for mobile 4K Video editing, but with some gaming here and there.

I think the first thing we will want to see is xtu stress testing of the cpu to validate how well it will hold clocks and what can truly be altered with the k cpu and the impact to temps.

    No problemo,
I blocked the auto update, after it corrupted the numpad driver, after i used DWS ( destroy windows spying) i like the name
    http://dws.wzor.net

And restored the synaptics driver from msi site.
    Now its very stable.

I am with the latest nvidia driver.

This is a bit beyond your current level of tweaking mason2smart :) don't worry about it. There is a lot of tweaks one can do to the CPU to make it run always at max speed, to avoid throttling itself down in idle etc etc.

Those are CPU states. You won't need to mess with them :)

So I've decided to buy the MSI GT80S Titan-002 SLI GTX980M 16GB Skylake model from GentechPC and I have a few questions.
The first one is about Thermal Compound, I want an upgraded one from stock and I remember people mentioning something that is better than IC Diamond and I don't remember how it's called.
    - Which options is better and how do I get the other option?

Second question is about the OS. I've heard that there are alot of problems with Win10 with drivers and compatibilty and I don't really want to change from Win7, although Win7 Pro is another 134$.. I already have a copy of Win7 Pro at home but I don't know how am I going to install all the drivers and make everything work.. Also it's alot of work and I don't really want to mess with this..
    - Anyways, should I stay with the 'stock' Win10 option, 'upgrade' to Win7, or Install Win7 at home?

Third question is about HardDrives SSDs. I am going for 2x 512GB Samsung 950 Pro NVMe SSDs @ RAID 0 for Windows, Steam and Games and a 1TB stock HD for everything else like shows, movies etc..
    - Is this ok to go for or should I separate windows from everything else on another drive?

And last question is do I need any of the optional things like OS Clean Installation Option and Windows Recovery DVD or can I manage without them or do them on my own.

    Thanks in advance!
    Gonen.

    Hi,

For win10, you can go with it, now am using it and its very stable, you have to block the autoupdate and use destroy windows spying.

I ended up removing the 1 tb stock for a 250 gb samsung 850 evo ssd... The 1tb stock is going to be really slow, unreliable, heavier, and noisier... I pricematched the hdd's with Powernotebooks, saving more than $100 on them.

If you want the better thermal paste, you will need to use xotic pc. Gentech doesn't do CLU.

Because I removed the 1tb and got the ssd's in mine as well, they do a free clean install with their copy of windows 10 and load the drivers on the computer. Because of the clean install, it is generally a good idea to get the oem windows disk/usb used for the installation. This also makes the 1 tb hdd unnecessary.

I stayed with windows 10 b/c if I need to switch to windows 8 i can get education discount for it and get it for half-price... They charge a lot for windows upgrades/downgrades and you probably will lose the recovery partition if they clean install anyways.

i dont think i can ever go back to HDDs, im waiting for next gen 3dnand flash from both intel and samsung, gonna try to get 850 pro 4TB next year, or some enterprised SSDs for close to 8TB which will be super expensive but will last me a long long time.

cstate option usually in the bios, if not the bios is locked and has features hidding or probably just one thats poorly made. simply put it, turning cstate off can help boost your overall performance to your system on pretty much everything, pcie, gpu, ssds, usb, etc but in exchange your computer always high on power. the new speedshift is a good bonus as when we wish to run on battery, it'll still be the regular cstate on but be a bit more snappier and intel did a fine job there. whenever im using it on AC connected though, cstate is always off so I can get maximum performance with snappier experience.

Nice build, I was also thinking about removing the Blu-Ray Burner + DVDRW/CDRW Super Multi Combo Drive from my build in favor of a little extra SSD memory. Who really uses discs any more? If I have to, I can always get an external reader use my secondary pc to do a blue ray rip.
