Just watched CES 2019 MSI coverage. There are no new gt83 rtx models coming out. I'm getting the impression MSI is abandoning the SLI flagship :(

What's the point to keep making sli laptop that use 1080p 60Hz panel from stone age.

Almost every GT80/GT83 display is overclockable to 100hz, Do you even own one of these? Anywho, The point is, I was hoping for a new updated model with a new display @ higher res/refresh rate, 2 RTX cards via nvlink etc etc. and there wasn't anything announced or revealed regarding msi's flagship models.

There's just not enough demand to make new 18.4 inch displays. If you look into laptop trend, thin and light laptops are all the way to go. And as much I don't like it, manufacturers give 0 crap about enthusiasts that like big beefy laptops.

MSI has been "skating" on the edge of a rebuild for a while now. Better screen, new layout, better cooling, something to give it that cool edge it had at initial release as the original GT80, some wow factor.

IDK if the Pascal "rehash" on the same nm process is that thing, maybe MSI will pass on this generation of GPU's and wait for 7nm AMD / Nvidia GPU's / CPU's?

Nvidia has pulled back on the full on performance laptop GPU, with only 150w+ 2080 even in the Clevo models, so there might be a little boost in performance over a 1080, but probably not a lot, no where near the 1080ti / 2080 desktop level - 225w just for stock performance, and no chance of 300w+ per GPU in a laptop.

    I'd love an all AMD GT85 to be a thing. Reminiscent of the Asus W90VP 18.4" w/ AMD Crossfire 4870 GPU's. :)

The P870 Clevo 17" SLI chassis is EOL because no multi GPU as well

I guess we will have to see if the RTX2080 MXM boards have a connector, without that there's no hope

I mean I can use basic human logic just by looking at recent laptop released. Thin, Light, with Max-Q design. People don't care and don't even know that those laptops will throttle to hell. And there is just higher demand for thin and light than beefy and heavy laptops which makes most profit.

I hope they go for it. They have a one of a kind product here. Updated cooling system, new monitor with higher refresh rate/resolution and a tempered glass hood to display the components like this would be awesome. Photos in the xtu benchmark. https://hwbot.org/submission/4018441_duplicity_xtu_core_i7_6820hk_1498_marks/

Speaking of AMD, I heard the new desktop cards are going to be a great value. It would be interesting to see them do an AMD SLI model for sure. gt85, i'm down lol.

I've posted the original GT80 artist sketches and concept drawings a couple of times here on NBR, and in those sketches were a number of variants that would be cool.

Funny enough, one of the GT80 variants looked a lot like the new Asus "Mothership", with a removable keyboard - not sure if it had a kickstand, but it might have.

I think MSI is just waiting for the right time - the right mix of new killer components - and 7nm might be "good enough" to reduce power with performance increases that will fit in a laptop. Or, 5nm...3nm?

The power requirements for the 14nm Intel and 12nm Nvidia parts are way too high to match the highest available desktop performance in a laptop right now. Power and thermal requirements have kinda hit an uncomfortable peak.

I also heard the RTX cards run quite hot because of how large the die is. I suppose there could be the possibility that MSI is delaying a new gt83 until they figure out proper cooling.

Just took a look at the asus mothership. I love the concept but dislike the keyboard because it looks like they went halfway between regular mech chicklets and fullsize mech keycaps. Looks like the actuation is a bit different too. I suppose this sort of thing I'd have to mess around with in person to give a definitive opinion on it. Love the concept so far.

Doesn't MSI usually bring their flagship stuff out at Computex?

Also.....I wonder about the possibility of switching from sli to a TI GPU...a pipe dream for sure but a man can dream.

also @hmscott what are those screens?

@hmscott Ah dang, I thought you might have posted them and knew what they where.....I think they would look great as little chat screens or something the like even if they are just there to annoy my GF and E-peen contest with her friend. lmao.

I'm trying to find out a thunderbolt docking solution at the moment so i can plug in less crap onto the laptop....but im not sure the limitations of USB-C TB3. =/

The demand is there. Manufacturers do give a crap about enthusiasts. Infact, That is exactly who the GT83 is for, enthusiasts. If MSI didn't care, They wouldn't have made these models in the first place.

That's my current set up. Those are the 9.7" packed pixels screens I spoke about in the past. The other photo is an under the hood shot. ***Prays MSI makes a new tempered glass hood for future models so that hardware can be shown off similar to a desktoptower***

You can use a thunderbolt docking solution but the TB3 port is connected to use one display at a time through tb3. IE no dp splitters or multiple displays via TB3. Just like most laptops, It's hard wired on the motherboard that way. After a lot of research I found out it is a real tb3 port(it allows you to power and send signal for up to a 5k monitor, usb-c doesn't) but it just not wired for alt dp(multiple displays). You can still power a bunch of usb stuff through it too as well as connect it to other computers for ultrafast file transfer. Sometimes, devices that you connect via tb3 to the gt83vr do need to be enabled in the tb3 software.

The packed pixels monitors were discontinued but the company, Dovetail Technologies, Is working on releasing an updated model. I'm assuming a larger screen, standard resolution and tb3 cables included. I took some time and gave them a lot of feedback about the product. Can't wait to see what they come up with. Hoping for thinner bezels and a larger 1080p screen so that nvidia surround can be used.

I use the left screen for watching content and the right screen for streaming/monitoring needs.

Msi made this laptop because there already was 18.4 inch panel that alienwares used so sourcing it was pretty simple.
I can only imagine gt83 refresh with 4k 18.4" panel that asus uses in their watercooled pc.

No one manufactures a device solely because they have access to the parts. They wanted to appeal to the enthusiast. Sure, sourcing was easier since they had a line on the monitor, but was just it, just easier sourcing which meany they were able to roll the model out quicker at a lower cost. HMscott stated they've teetered before in the past about a re-model. After hearing this, I wouldn't be surprised to see a newer model with a higher refresh rate(144hz or even 240hz) with potentially a higher resolution(1440p), thinner bezels, rtx cards(once they re-engineer the cooling configuration to properly cool them, rtx cards run hotter than gtx due to increased die size) and g-sync. I think a properly engineered "vapor chamber" with separate heatpipes for the cpu and for each gpu along with an increased blade count on the fans(as well as match all 3 fans this time instead of giving the cpu a weaker fan MSI!) would accomplish this.

4k isn't going to survive in the gaming laptop market It's already on the way out as the public smartly figured out that when 4k is viewed up close on a small screen, the difference between 4k and 1080p is negligible(Shame on manufacturers for trying to push a product that doesn't make sense). 4k only makes a difference when you are watching a big screen from afar, such as a TV or one of the new huge BFG nvidia gaming displays coming out(size of a tv LOL). Gamers prefer the higher refresh rate since it actually improves the quality of gameplay.

@gt83vr6reHelp Ah thanks mate. When you say I can only use one display at a time on a docking port that means I can only connect my one screen, no daisy chaining yea? Mind you I only want to use my one large external monitor when at home, I just wanna have all my USB devices come out of the dock instead of my computer and running amok on my desk.

@Kevin@GenTechPC True True, though you do now know we gotta spend now till the next big reveal agonizing about secret events. lmao

I wouldn't mind seeing a 1440p screen on these. 4k would be wayyyy too much and you would be burning power on something you cant notice. (my biggest reason for going to 1440p in the first place.)

You can only connect one display via tbt3, you can't use a splitter or dock to connect multiple displays through the tb3port. You can still run multiple displays at the same time by utilizing all the ports. For example, 1 display connected via tb3, 1 display connected via dp, 1 display connected via hdmi. You can still use a tbt3 dock for the usb ports.

I'm holding all spending until I see the rest of the reveals for 2019. I was excited for the new alienware m51 but realized it's just a half-assed clevo.

So far I have my eye on the 240hz 1080p rtx laptop coming out. I forget the brand, I think it was asus or something.

Eventually, it's going to be pointless to purchase from a VAR once the manufacturers start getting class action lawsuits thrown at them by consumers for selling laptops that can't be utilized for 100% loads due to throttling(that's right, they need to use proper thermal paste or even go as far as liquid metal and if I recall that's really one of the only reasons why people even consider overpaying with a VAR)

Yes I get what you are saying. I only have the one display that I want to do. But I was curious like how one monitor can feed two others sometimes.

Yea I know what you mean. Depending on how things go my next upgrade (most likely after this generation) may just completely sidestep the MSI brand after all and see if I can find a good clevo reseller that is in or ships to Canada.

ew, Clevo. If you are gonna go desktop parts, you might as well get a tower because clevos are extremely loud and run hottttt. You are forced to put fans on fullblast even with liquid metal while underload so then if you want to cancel out the noise you are forced to use a headset. You'll never get the same performance compared to a tower even though you are using many of the same parts. They are also pretty dang ugly lol. There is reason why most clevo owners sell it within the first year.(it's because they resent not getting a tower in the first place, they realized that even with identical parts they aren't getting desktop performance.)

The problem is I spend most of my time on the go. Like right now I am going to be pretty stationary but when I get my new job it's going to be back to the go to x location work, then sit up to 10 hours to wait and resume. And that's on top of my normal go to my dad's, friends, moms and girlfriends house.

Like I said I'm still sniffing around and if MSI is going to be releasing a version of the tornado f5 in 17.3 inch I might be a happy boy.

The 3 reasons MSI discontinued the GT83:
    1. The demand is NOT there. Worldwide sales of 18.4" laptops is dismal...which is why you see fewer and fewer models offering them.
    2. No SLi support for RTX 2080 - Same reason most Clevo rebranders have discontinued the P870TM1.
    3. Difficult to source quality 18.4" screens. The demand is so low for this size screen, it is difficult to purchase the screens, of any quality, at a price point that makes sense without having to buy way too many in relation to demand.

Manufacturers do care, but as technology moves forward things have to evolve. Conditions today are quite different from when the MSI GT8x series was introduced, through the GT83.

    May the MSI GT83 R.I.P.

Yup. That's what is promoting my search for a new brand.

Is the GT75 going to survive the purge though?

Personally I have a deep favor for the larger computers mostly due to the fact I am a big person. Lol and being able to have a large portable device is good for me as I can quite comfortably heft it around.

What happened to the non workstation version of the WT75, the F7 ?
The WT75 still has a 95W TDP limit however and ignores all bios power limit overrides :( Have to use IMON SLOPE changes to fix that.

I believe the 2070 and 2060 GPUs can't use SLI, that is how nvidia made them. So in theory only RTX 2080 could do it, and I suspect we won't see a GT8X laptop. It was already a niche product and nvidia just made it nich...er. The cheapest config would be what, like 3.5k? and they don't even sell that much.

I do believe that MSI will change their 18inch line to a new product (hopefully) or probably will let it die. SLI support hardwarewise has been dying steadily, and low sales just don't warrant its existance as before.

My dream would be to make the GT8X line the desktop replacement monster, and make it single high end GPU with single socketed CPU.

That's what I hope for. There where rumors of a laptop with a 2080ti in it but I think it was an external.

Hopefully they throw a line for us with a WT75 model getting a gamer focused refresh and a move over to our side.

    Hmmmm.
I wouldn't call 5% off a $5k+tax item clearance pricing. Clearance is generally 25%-50% off, sometimes more. But i'll take your word for it like you said, sales for these are abysmal so I won't be surprised when they do drop to somewhere in the 25%-40% off range since like you said, demand is abysmal. The longer they sit on the shelf the more they will depreciate since technology has a life cycle. I'll just wait until one of the vendors wants to actually make a sale.

As more time passes, It becomes more and more detrimental to hold the item on a shelf. It's not like the last coffee lake model doesn't have performance issues due to tdp limits or heat, It has 2 extra cores than an i7-6820hk but because of tdp limit and heat produced under load(even with liquid metal), The best xtu bench only scored just shy of 300 points above my 6820hk model. 2 extra cores for just under 20% more performance under load. That's the worst performance scaling i've seen when increasing the core count by 50%. It will be even worse while full gpu/cpu load as there will be even more heat. No wonder the final production of the gt83 are still sitting on shelves, the processor is garbage and a letdown for what a 6 core 12 thread processor should be capable of. Even a good 6c/12t processor at stock speeds such as the 8950hk trashes the 8850h without breaking a sweat.

Whenever you are ready to make a sale on a gtx 1080 sli coffee lake gt83 model at a reasonable clearance price, you let me know. I'll be happy to spend. Until then, we can watch them collect dust on the shelf because as you said, demand/sales are abysmal for 18.4" laptops, turd chip aside.

Call it whatever you like...it is what it is. There are so few left, MSI apparently did not think they had to do more.

My prediction...if you wait for 25-50% off, they will be all gone and you will never see it, because it has already passed. Earlier, they were discounted $1,000...but then when supply dwindled, MSI took that away and went to what is there now.

We don't have any on our shelves. What limited supply is left are on someone else's shelf.

My lcd display will not work despite replacing the LVDS cable and the LCD panel. Any suggestions? Only works with external monitor. I am able to go into BIOS.

    Is the card acting erratic?

Also see if you can check the traces around the connector, there could be a short or something.

Not sure what you mean by card erratic? It works perfectly and can run all the games on the external monitor connected by HDMI. I am ready to give up and send it in to MSI but worried they are just going to send it back not fixed or that it will happen again. Has anyone had this problem with their laptop before? There was a problem before with the GT73VR PEG Port 1 in Bios but I don't think that is the problem here. They had to unlock the BIOS with the help of SVET and set Port 1 to enabled instead of auto. I can adjust brightness on the screen but nothing is displayed.

If it's being buggy on the external. Sometimes it could not send due to an issue on the card but if it's working on the external screen it's likely either a short on the board or as you mentioned a firmware issue.

As far as I know no one else has had this issue in the last little while.

I have been living with this problem for the last two months. I have not found anything in the forums or online and MSI tech has been useless. I cannot find anything visibly wrong on the motherboard or with the connectors. There must be a short somewhere. Of course it happened right when the warranty ran out!

I pretty much know what I need to do. Will post again once I fix the problem. If anyone has the same problem please chime in. There is so few of us out there that own the GT83 and as seen by the previous posts we are a dying breed!

Just want to chime in that my Alienware m17r2 from 10 years ago works perfectly with Windows 10. Built like a tank. Only reason I went with this piece of garbage is because the screen was bigger and it had a Blu-ray drive.

Don't want to disrespect anyone that owns this MSI GT83VR 6RF just disappointed in a $5k laptop that lasts only two years. It was great while it lasted! I was hoping to get the same 10 years out of this one but oh well! The customer service is also not up to par for the price that we paid for this.

I am going to get it fixed and then I will report back. No one seems to report back after they RMA and fix their laptop. I can't resell it to anyone else in its current condition.
