    Thanks, will UPS said
    Delivered On:
    Wednesday, 12/17/2014 at 12:00 P.M.

And nothing has updated on the RMA page, it still shows as "Approved" been showing that since December 2nd. (Of course some of that was my fault as I had to save up for shipping it. Which I shipped via 3-day to help make up for my delay) I know and understand it can take awhile for it to process and for the repair to happen, but I don't think anyone can blame me for being impatient and also be a little apprehensive as I've had issues with an old Samsung Gamer. After all my issue was just with the keyboard spacebar sticking, Nothing else. No hardware issues, no screen issues, no cosmetic issues. The laptop was perfect for me, save the space bar. So I hope the space bar can be fixed and the laptop can be back in my hands soon as I miss it!

Not to be confused with impatience but it is my baby! (Don't tell my girlfriend that lol)

    Hey Dragonwolf8504,

It's fine to be impatient, i would be too if it were MY baby (dont tell my gf too) :D! Please give our RMA service team a little time, as it arrived only on 12/17. Depending on the amount of items that need to be serviced, a technician might not have gotten to your laptop yet.

    Cheers!
    Geno

hahaha, yeah I understand that they may be busy and don't hold nothing against them. (I'd be an a-hole if I did), still though it's my baby! hahahaha :D

On a note it does now say "In processing". A question, how quick of shipping is used? Just wondering. (I've always wondered that actually.)

Agreed. My RMA got there on November 22 and it wasn't actually worked on until Dec 2. Some of that was due to Thanksgiving as well as MSI was doing some end of the fiscal year stuff (or so they said). With the holidays, I'd allow a little extra slack as people disappear from work around this time. :)

Once Dec 2 hit, they fixed and shipped it out the same day. Got it about a week later, shipped UPS ground. It came back in the same package I sent it in (a FedEx padded laptop box).

The repair quality was really good. They pretty much overhauled my laptop. Replaced the mobo and proc, and redid most of the cabling on the inside. All the work done was listed on the outside of the box on the packing slip.

They were also up front on their website about laptops taking a bit longer to repair than motherboards. It was within their quoted time so no complaints there.

I'd rather wait and have a repair done right with the laptop in tip top condition rather than get it back quickly with a half-@$$ed repair. :)

Can you tell me if the GS60 Ghost pro 4k has a refresh rate lock?
I've read on an Amazon review that it's locked at 48Hz, can you confirm if this is true?

Does the 3k Version have this problem as well or is it 60Hz?

Hi, I'm a student currently residing in Germany. I'm looking for laptop and found this laptop GS60, however, with a German keyboard. Is it possible to change the keyboard to US version? If yes, Can I change it by myself without ruining the warranty?

Thanks for putting my fears aside. It seems you were taken care of very well. I hope the same can be said as I miss my baby. I just checked on my status and it said Your RMA has been shipped. When looking at the details is says shipped on Dec 22nd, but no tracking info as of yet. I'm assuming it's been put into the system but as UPS or whoever does the actual delivery hasn't picked it up yet that would be why there is no tracking info as of yet.

I understand too not to rush things and superguy25, your right, I would rather have it done right, rather than half- !@$ed. I've just been screwed with before. I had a Samsung Gamer laptop, not a bad machine had an i7-3610, 16GB Ram, Nvidia GTX 675M 2GB gpu. I had to send it in 3 times for repair within the year I had it. 1st time the cpu was overheating, 2nd and 3rd time the gpu kept failing. Never again will I buy a Samsung laptop. So yeah I do understand the no rush. haha.

It would be nice if I got it at the end of the week or even early next week before New Years which it looks like that may happen, at least before the New Years if I went by the week it took yours superguy25.

I don't want to but I will be selling my gaming desktop gonna go all mobile setup. It's more power friendly and will the MSI GT72 is equal or even bypasses my gaming desktop. (Intel Xeon e3-1230v3, 16GB Ram, Nvidia GTX 770 2GB Gpu) yet it draws less power even at full load. There are a few things on my desktop I will miss such as bragging rights on a Xeon (Server class) cpu and the upgrade ability. But I need to cut down on power use and am in need of cash now. Someday later I will build a new gaming rig, probably even more powerful than my current, since the knowledge can't be taken from me, lol.

Sorry I went a little off topic I just get started sometimes and can't shut-up! :p Anyhow here is to hoping my MSI arrives soon, intact and trouble free. I went with MSI this time due to the warranty length and the fact that my friend had an msi from Vista days (Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram, Nvidia GT9600) and it's still running today! A little long in the tooth but still runs. :) That and the GT72 has a dragon on it! My favorite animal.

I'll update on when it comes and everything.

You can but it's very difficult as you will need to tear down the entire system to do it, because the keyboard is glued onto the C side panel securely.
    A + B = LCD screen's top & bottom plastic cover.
    C = System's Touchpad side panel.
    D = System's Bottom side panel.

Need to order the correct keyboard with C panel first, and then tear down the whole system, replace the entire C panel then that's it.
Estimated 2 to 3 hours of work, with attention to details.

As far as I have read, the 4K panel indeed is 48hz. The 3K panel seems to be 60hz.

I wouldn't support buying the 4K model if you intend to do 4K gaming due to low refresh rate at 48Hz as well as low amount of VRAM.

Will there be a latest bios release (2014 release ) for the MSI GT60-16F3? Thanks

I still get conflicting info on this screen, any way to verify for sure Geno? Some report the 4K GS60 panel is locked to 48hz all the time, regardless of resolution. Others report the 4k panel will run at 60hz when at lower resolutions. I'm tempted to pull the trigger on the GS60 Ghost Pro 4K-078 (6GB Vram and 4K screen), and understand when running at 4K it is 48hz, but will only purchase if the panel runs at 60hz when downscaled to 1080p or 3K. If it will run higher refresh rate on lower resolutions I'll buy it and enjoy 4K for general usage and downscale for 60hz for gaming. But, it it's always stuck at 48hz then it's a deal breaker. I'd rather not have to order and return if that is the case.

Is it the same 4K panel that others report on the Lenovo Y50 that is stuck at 48hz for all resolutions?

The 4k panel will only support up to 48hz, regardless of the resolution.

Hey Geno, had another MSI question.

I just installed a new 2.5" SSD to replace the HDD, and did a clean install of Windows instead of a system restore. All the drivers are available and installed, but I've discovered that the MSI downloads page for the GS60 doesn't contain all the utilities I need. I'm trying to find out where to download the proper Dragon Gaming Center and the utility for the "Shift" functionality (FN-F7).

    Thanks!

I think it is the same utility regardless of model. You can try the downloads from a GT70 here MSI Global - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Motherboard, Graphics and more 64

Great idea, thanks for the help! I checked the GS70's page and it had the version of Dragon Gaming Center I needed, which also adds "SHIFT" support (FN-F7).

For some reason MSI just doesn't have the link of the GS60's support page and I never thought to look at a different laptop model. So, for anyone else that runs into this, go here:

MSI Global - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Motherboard, Graphics and more 64

Geno, tell MSI to fix this on their website :p

Geno: is it true that if you remove the rear cover to upgrade RAM on a GS60 it voids the warranty?

There's a sticker over one of the screws so I'm guessing so...

    Thanks

Did they stop working out of the blue? You will have to contact your region's MSI support (UK i am guessing) and have them take a look at it.

I wouldn't be able to help you with this, as i am unsure of Canada's inventory and shipping schedule. I work in the US region

As long as you do not damage the unit in anyway as a result of your installation, we will not void the warranty. :)

I'm trying to restore my MSI GS60 to the default installation since I'm having BSOD's that have something to do with directX drivers that where going wrong. I tried everything but could not get my laptop to restore to the default installation. Can someone please help me with this problem...

The following things I tryed --> with the results.

Bashing F3 during startup (after I reset the bios to default settings) --> Nothing happening, just booting into windows 8.1. Not even an error message.
Windows recovery (Remove everything and reinstall windows) --> " Insert Media. Some files are missing. Your windows installation or media will provide these files."
BurnRecovery --> " Your computer's disk partitions are NOT factory default configuration. (No recovery hidden partition) The Application cannor be processed "

So it seems like it can't find my recovery partition... But when I look for it I can see it on my disk:
    Disk part:
    View attachment 119757
    Computer Manager:
    partitions2.PNG
When using the bios to browse through the partitions (using the browser for selecting a bios update file) I can even see that the recovery partition contains the WinRE files.

So the partition exists. The Partition seems to have a correct label. And the partition seems to have correct files.
Why then can't I use any of the recovery functions?

    PS. My laptops is the MSI GS60 2QE 036 ( 970, 3GB 3K screen )

I had a couple of questions about the GS30 and its Gaming Dock:

    1. Does the dock work with a Quadro or Firepro graphics card?
    2. Does the dock charge the battery of the laptop if it is docked, but powered down?
    3. Will the dock be sold seperately at some point, or if I purchase a GS30 could I pay for a second directly through MSI or something? I would like the ability to have one at a work location and at home, shuttling the laptop between both.
    4. Does the dock disable the onboard Intel graphics entirely when it is used?
    5. Is the onboard NIC also a Killer LAN chip? Is it possible to install a Killer AC Wifi card in place of the Intel 7260AC?
    6. What is the WHR rating on the battery? I am guessing between 40-50 based on the laptop size and thickness but it would be nice to know any specifics.
    7. Can the LED strips along the front of the laptop be shut off?
    Thank you for the help!

For the F3 method assume you are doing this from a cold boot, which is normally the right way to do it. Try it a slightly different way. With the computer on like normal, tell it to restart instead of shut down. Once it starts turning off to reboot start mashing F3 then and continue to do it.

Also just to be sure, this is the stock drive that came with the computer right, not you that was upgraded?

I'm gonna try doing a hot reboot F3...
Result: Hot reboot F3 stil does nothing, it just boots normally in windows.

And yes, the M.2. SSD's are still the original disks.

Is there a way to restore my laptop using an external media? Can I download a restore image somewhere?
Or can someone maybe confirm that recovery is working for MSI GS60 laptops, and if so, what kind of partition labels they have so I can check if mine are ok?

If I can't restore my laptop I can't find out if the BSOD I get are a driver issue or hardware failure. I have that papers already here to return the laptop, but I rather don't do that because they told me it would leave me for about 5 weeks without a laptop, and I need it for work!

If you have a USB flash drive you can use, try these instruction
Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help

If you can work on the computer for a little while before the BSOD you can download a program called WhoCrashed. That will create a dump report telling you exactly which driver caused it. It may even pull up the reasons for the previous BSOD's.

Try retrieving the data with WinPE instead, see if they can be recovered first.
Then use Recovery discs to reset the OS instead as the last resort.

I tryed already to get copy the files of the WinRE partition using linux, but it get errors telling me it can't read the partition, the only one that seems able to read the partition is my bios browser used for bios updates (I made screenshots of it for proof might msi want to charge me for recovering). I successfully installed a new windows 8.1 with the USB creator you sent me, I slightly hoped that it would use provide the base of windows 8.1 and still use the Recovery partition for installing all the MSI stuff and drivers, but it really installed a clean windows 8.1. Not that I have a big problem with that.. but I'm afraid msi won't support it.

Anyway. I have a fresh installed windows 8.1. I installed all drivers on it and installed the game EvE online. Started up EvE online and within 4 minutes time BSOD... Looking at the dump it tells me the following:

It looks like a driver issue, thats why I did not returned my laptop yet. But I'm not really sure yet.

    Edit: going to try that.

log: screenshot of the files still present on the recovery partition that somehow can't be found by recovery software:

Did lots of more testing and it got even worse.

Somehow I can only boot the laptop with a fresh windows installation and the stock Nvidia drivers (344.00). But then it looks like it still is not loading the Nvidia drivers, games look like they are running on the intel HD card even though the power button is orange. I Can't confirm this since the Nvidia Controll panel does not want to start and freezes my laptop. When I update the Nvidia drivers to a higher version, next time I boot the system, it does not boot anymore. Just a black screen after the MSI logo and laptop freezes.

    All problems together:
    - Starting with artifacts showing in 3D enviroments,
    - More and more BSOD while using the 970m for DirectX type 3D enviroments
    - Not able to execute restores or recovery's. At some point I wanted to try reset my laptop to factory default to see if this fixed problem. But then I found out about this new problem (software seems not able to find recovery media/partition?)
    - Not able to use Nvidia drivers anymore in fresh installed windows 8.1 64bit (Nvidia control panels are crashing when trying to start them up, freezing you windows explorer forcing you to reboot)
    - Not able to boot fresh installed windows 8.1 64bit installations after updating Nvidia drivers (tryed 344.75 and 347.09).
+ Memmory and CPU tests show now problems.

So I'm far from happy with they premium price laptop. What is bugging me even more is that it is still not 100% clear for me that this is a only one hardware issue that is solved if I sent it for repairs. I experienced so many different flaws that can only be experienced when you really use it. The laptop ran good for the first 3 day's before I the first artifacts appeared. The BSOD problem would not come up in an OpenGL enviroment, only in DirectX enviroments. The not bootable laptop problem only happend later on with one of the latest Nvidia drivers. And then the completely unrelated but annoying "not able to find the Recovery partition" problem while I never touched or renamed the origenal raid disks or its partitions. I can still see the Recovery partition with its WinRE files still on it.

What is the best thing I can do now? I completely lost my trust in this laptop I have now!

I need this laptop in a business environment and can't risk sending the laptops multiple times for different repairs that take 4/5 weeks every time with the change that only 1 problem is fixed...

If you saw artifacts and issues since the beginning, you should have setup RMA immediately. It sounds like, though i am not 100% certain, like the GPU is dying or on the verge of death. Some components simply come defective and show such symptoms including freezing, weird performance, BSODS, black screens and recoveries of drivers over and over until it dies. I have had a couple of GPUs that died on the first day of use, because they simply came defective from factory, from different brands and models.

This can happen to any laptop anywhere and it is beyond your control. I suggest you setup RMA and leave a message on how to reproduce all those issues you see constantly.

    Thanks Ryzeki,

I know what you mean, and I agree.
The reason why I did not RMA it yet is to make sure it is not only a software/driver issue that you can fix yourself without having to RMA it. The first day's if felt more like a driver issue then a hardware issue. I really don't want to go into a RMA chain again as I have been one time with a other laptop(brand) that had only 1 simple failure.

Anyway. Maybe I'm making to big of a fuzz about it... It is just the pressure of work and my gable going for a MSI laptop for the first time. With which I was afraid having exactly the kind of problems I have right now. Instead of going for a more robust and tested Lenovo or Dell with more support. I made some warranty request on the MSI website where you register your laptop, but not had any reaction on it for a few day's already.

Guess I should just RMA is with a note, and hope that ALL problems will be tested before getting it back.

Do you have the original recovery discs? I would try that first and run all tests first before updating any drivers.

I know what you mean. At work we tend to use lenovo most of the time, and due to that, I have had my fair share of failed components among other details. Same with dells, particularly workstations. I am not mad at any of them because they do still offer support and get it fixed, but it is a hassle when you do encounter such issues.

Funny enough, I am the minority in the office, that switched to this Asus N550 for work, and its been the least problematic computer so far.

But yeah, the gamble itself is going for a new machine, rather than a brand (depending on brand and model though... haha :D).

I think ideally you should setup RMA and a way to reproduce the error so they can work fast on it. You can definitely try Kevin's suggestion before you send your machine, in hopes indeed it is some software error.

    to any MSI rep,

I'm in the market for a SLI capable gaming laptop, so obviously GT80 is a prime candidate, along with Sager 9377-S. With 980M SLI should be able to support 4k screen, why GT80 decided to not have one? As for future investment goes, will GT80 possible have the option to upgrade the screen to 4k, if such option has been discussed by the MSI team?

the reason is due to the supply of an 18" 4k panel. From what i understand, there isn't any supplier that has a stable supply or any supply of this particular size 4k panel. There isn't any plans to offer any upgrades to 4k screens at the moment.

The important thing to consider is that GT80 is certainly 4K capable, and that means you can actually enjoy 4K on an external monitor. 18inch 4k won't be as appreciated as on a 24 inch monitor or bigger.
