We still haven't seen 4K 17.3" panels and that screen size is much more popular.

Hey Geno,
MSI question: curious about transferring a warranty. I buy a new laptop or two a year and sell, gift or donate my previous unit. What steps are required for transferring the MSI warranty to the new owner for coverage? Does it simply follow the device like most companies or are additional steps required?
Thanks -
thanks, I guess I will hold off for few more months and see if any new announcement from other gaming laptop makers, maybe Razor might have a SLI 4K in their 2015 lineup, one can wish right?
-
I doubt it for this year, but it could be possible in the future. Personally, you can't go wrong with an IPS 1080p with great specs as the GT80 includes. 4K is nice, but almost useless in such a small form factor.
-
There will always be something to wait for!
While waiting consider that the smaller, narrower, less modiable Razor will operate at higher temps and therefor slower and/or limited speeds compared to the GT80 Titan.
At least that is my understanding. The more efficient cooling system is the reason I am choosing MSI over all the other makers.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong. -

The connector is ready for GT80 but what's missing is the capable panel in that size.
However, even if a manufacturer makes such panel, its frequency specification should be published to the public if it's not the standard 60Hz.felix3650 likes this. -
to be honest, I rather get a MSI or Sager over Razor, just for future upgradability options. I am just afraid that if I pull the trigger now, 4K becomes mainstream and I am stuck with a new SLI gaming laptop for the next 3 to 5 years with 1080P display.
I know best performance with single GPU gaming laptops is still 1080P, since my goal is to buy a new SLI gaming laptop, i just want to be future-proof. -
Agreed. There are many 4k panels in the market for different sizes, but most if not all the first gens were 30hz panels. Even now we have the common 48hz ones.
-
You can easily swap laptop displays, so i dont think you should worry about it.jcoltrane123 likes this.

They are almost pretty much compatible with each other as long as size matches.
Also, ASUS & MSI have BOM sheet that shows the panels they've used during their internal testing so this info can be helpful if it's obtainable. -
I agree and to be honest it makes me a little bit mad. I would love to see let's say MSI GS70 with 4K 60Hz IPS display and I know I wouldn't be able to game on it, but that's not why I would like to have 4K display. I'm perfectly fine gaming on FullHD, but I would really like 4K for work. Maybe it's just my personal experience from the brief encounters I had with such displays, but the text just looks so smooth on 4K. It's just much more comfortable to look at, at least for me. So how about making it happen MSI?
Oh and while you are at it, pair it with GTX 965m with 4GB memory

This is mostly a copy-paste of the GT80 titan owner thread
I received my GT80 titan yesterday from newegg. I really enjoy this laptop but there is an issue I can not overlook. The monitor emits a high-pitched buzzing. The pitch and volume of this buzzing changes with each brightness level. When at the highest or lowest brightness there's no sound, but everything in-between creates a noticeable whine. In my experience, this is a symptom of a dying inverter inside the monitor. This is very disappointing because I'd hate to part with it, but this needs to be addressed. What is recommended in this situation? -
Why even ask? Start the rma procedure.

Sorry to hear about the issue you are having with your new PC.
This is definitely a screen issue (PCB related?), contact Newegg for exchange.
By the way, the screen is LED backlit so there's no inverter. -
Since my first attempt to get some answers from MSI have failed due to incompetence of their customer service I am now copying my questions here hoping that MSI is not employing people with brain damage in all positions of their customer relationship interface.

Considering the GT80: Is it possible to change the key caps and then change the keyboard layout settings on Windows and transform an AZERTY or QWERTZ keyboard into a QWERTY one?

Good morning. Question regarding the GS70 SSDs. Do these come with self-encrypting SSDs?
Thanks -
We will eventually launch the GT80 with different switch options. However, currently we are only offering cherry MX browns. If you have the skills and knowledge to change the switches, than there shouldnlt be any problem as far as i know. However, know that this will definitely void your warranty.
I am sorry you are having this issue. Please begin the RMA/Exchance process as soon as possible, as this should not be something you should deal with.
i don't believe they are, but someone correct me if im wrong.

I am seriously considering a GT80 to replace my now-discontinued Alienware 18.
Are there keyboards available for other languages? I specifically need the Latin American Spanish keyboard. I would buy a "stock" GT80 and then, separately, purchase the Spanish keyboard and replace the American English one that comes with the GT 80 sold in the US.
So my question is whether SteelSeries has GT80 keyboards for other languages and how can I buy one?
If the keyboard I need is avialible, do I get it from MSI, SteelSeries or a distributor?
Thank you!! -
No reseller have the part. Not even MSI is selling it at the moment. They don't even know the part number of the keyboard.
I would try changing the key caps and the Windows keyboard layout before buying an extra keyboard. Maybe they just created an universal keyboard by accident.
You can find key caps for many languages but I'm not sure if it's the same style of the GT80. Maybe you can just mod it as you like. -
Right now, the best bet would be to purchase keycaps and configure the windows keyboard layout to suit your needs.

Hi Geno, I think my previous message got missed in the shuffle:
MSI question: curious about transferring a warranty. I buy a new laptop or two a year and sell, gift or donate my previous unit. Geno, i wanted to ask if msi offers support for the Barebones/Whitebooks they sell worldwide.
I got myne on a reseller that seems dead so i gave up to ask support from him but still i need to repair my laptop because i flashed the wrong Embedded Controller Firmware and i bricked it, my bad.... -
Hello Geno,
Speaking of keycaps, can we find keycaps for the normal GT72 steelseries keyboard anywhere? I bought one in the UK but I really don't like the UK layout. -
The warranty should follow the unit. If there is 1 year left on the Laptop, and the laptop is sold to someone else, they will have 1 year of warranty.
The warranty would be from your reseller. We sell the barebones/whitebooks to these resellers and they configure them to resell. If you are having an issue with your laptop, then your best option is to find a laptop repair center that can work on it.
Unfortunately, there is no place that you can buy the keycaps for the GT72 anywhere. Sorry about that.
-
Can you check if this really applies? I've asked in other threads but I didn't get any answers yet.
Basically what I think it's possible is to change certain key caps and then change the keyboard layout in Windows to enable the conversion of an AZERTY or QWERTZ keyboard into a QWERTY one. -
yes, exactly. You can just change out the layout through windows, then change the keycaps to match.

One question, while we are on the topic of Keycaps. How hard is it to remove the Keycaps on the gt72?
-
Why MSI on UK is only supplying the GT80 maxed out at a price of £3,569.99, what about the stock versions and the i7 4720HQ one? Any plans?
Also, how will the warranty work on the UK if I purchase with the resellers from US?Last edited: Jan 28, 2015 -
Thank you! MSI is earning more points in my scoreboard! Good job!
-
Is that going to change at some point? Are they keycaps even removable on this keyboard?dragonwolf8504 likes this.

Any chances MSI will launch a GT80 keyboard with QS1[1] switches (like the ones used in SteeSeries Apex M800[2])?

Read one post above. It's not that far.

Is there a UK version of the GS60 2QE available with the following spec: Nvidia 970m GPU, FullHD 2K display (not the 3K display, though that would be my 2nd choice), 16Gb RAM, and either a single 512Gb SSD or dual 256Gb SSD, no mechanical hard disk (don't won't the extra weight or noise)? I'm having problems finding this specification in the UK
-
What? Read what in the post above? I do read the comments. Do you?
-
What's happening with the MSI GS60 2QE with the FullHD (1080p) screen and GTX970M in Spain? I've mailed to more than 15 official distributors ( http://es.msi.com/service/wheretobuy#141-135), and none has stock and they don't know if it would be replenished.
Is this laptop discontinued? -
It depends on the specific regions supply and demand. I am unsure if MSI UK will carry other SKU's. For our laptops, we have 1 year international warranty, in which you can send it to an authorized repair center in your region. if you it falls out of this, you will have to ship it back to the US for any warranty work.
The keys are not easily removable from the gt72. it requires taking apart the laptop with a decent amount of technical knowledge.
Not at the moment. We are working closely with cherry on the key switches because we believe that they are the best solution for the GT80. SteelSeries helps us design the keyboard itself.
I am based out in the US, so i wont really be able to help you find out which exact configs will be available in the UK. Have you tried looking for a Build To Order retailer, and having them config that exact spec?
Sorry, i am unsure of the suppy in spain. I work out of the US Region, so i can only comment on our supply here. If they are really out of stock, then i believe they will be eventually replenished as hot products that sell out fast usually will get more supply. -
There is not any 2K model, you just need to check de official MSI website. For the GS60 there are 3 screen types: FullHD (1080p), 3K and 4K.

Hi Geno,
I notice that MSI laptops might have battery problems, from the youtube videos and forum posts (including htwingnut's review of GS60) and my own GS60, I found that some of them have batteries that have very high wear level, around 16%. I brought up this issue with a CS rep through email but sadly I didn't get any reply. In my laptop, this was a big deal as the laptop would automatically shutdown when the battery reaches 50% or so, and it was a brand new GS60 4K mind you.
I think MSI might have a bad batch of laptop batteries.
Battery wear level on my brand new GS60
Battery wear level on Gentech's review unit
And this is what happens when the battery raches 50%
MSI rep please look into this issue, thanks -
This is copy paste from a previous thread.
I purchased a GT80 Titan about 2 weeks ago from newegg. Unfortunately I had to return the device because the monitor was emitting a high-pitched sound when the brightnesss is above or below min/max brightness. I received the replacement laptop, and the monitor appears to be in better shape, but there's an issue with the buttons for the touchpad. I have never encountered this issue before.
It's quite a strange issue, whenver I click the BUTTONS of the touchpad, they appear to be held-down / pressed for half a second. Even if I quickly press the button, it appears the mouse is constantly pressed. This makes double-clicking to open an application frustrating. It's like there's a minimum time the touchpad says the button is pressed (if I press the button for .001 seconds or .02 seconds, it will still consider the button to be pressed for 0.5 seconds. The only way to open an application is
1) use an external mouse
2) double click very slowly
I hope this is just terrible luck with the GT80 and not an indication of their quality. Regardless I love this machine and find the idea of shipping it AGAIN none too pleasing. Any suggestions? Or will I have to ask for yet another GT80 and hope 3rd time is a charm?

On GS60's spec, the battery is a "52 Wh Lithium-Polymer, 4840 mAh, 6 cells".
Supposedly, your full capacity should be about 4840mAh, and GT72 has a "87 Wh Lithium-Ion, 7800mAh, 11.1V, 9 cells".
GT72's 30% wear level has been cleared because it was an intended feature but it's probably revised by now.
If your system shuts off when the battery level reaches 50.9% then the battery is defective because it's not supposed to do that.
However, a defective unit has nothing to do with wear level because that number can be incorrect sometimes. -
Hi Kevin,
I don't know whether that was a feature of the battery that's already fixed, here's a screenshot's of XOTIC's GT72 review and the battery seems OK, but they might have fixed it by then.
The GS60 battery however seems a bit odd since I see quite a few postings on forums about its high wear level. -
The issue with the mouse pad indeed is the way the GT80 works right now. I hope they patch it soon or that we may find how to configure it. Mine those the same (I didn't notice at first because I tap the pad to click, rarely used the button). It does seem to have some delay after clicking, both in click and release.

Perhaps if we all supply such feedback to MSI so they can roll out a firmware fix for these issues.
Either a firwmare update or driver update should be able to resolve this issue. -
-
I would like to by the configuration of the MSI GS60 2QE that comes with the matte FHD 1080p display (i.e. this), as I don't want a glossy nor 3K/4K display, but in the UK this is only available with 8GB RAM. I would therefore like to open up the laptop case to upgrade the RAM to 16GB, I would also like to replace the 1TB HDD with a 512GB SSD. Would I still be covered by the UK MSI warranty if opening up the case to perform these minor system upgrades, assuming no damage caused as a result of opening it up? The answer to this would affect my purchasing decision.

Hi Geno,
Recently I have noticed an odd noise in my GT70 2PC and the culprit is my fan. My machine is still under warranty but the cost to ship it for warranty purposes would be more expensive than the fan itself. I was wondering if MSI at all ships small parts like fans if the customer provides enough evidence of a fault so the customer is not forced to pay 2x the amount of the part cost on shipping.
All information I think may be necessary:
I purchased this machine in the US and I reside in Australia. (Still under global warranty)
I have cleaned fan and heatsinks like clockwork on a monthly basis and cleaned it prior to this post just to be sure it was not an issue from a foreign object in my machine.
Purchase date: 07 May 2014 (First machine shipped to me got lost, another was ordered and shipped)
Receive date: 01 June 2014
Audio of fan noise: https://hostr.co/xTtqFYvZvi0I

Plur
