Thanks Ken.
For Question 2, what about in the case of an aftermarket SSD that I put in myself? Do I do what you suggested for Question 1 after formatting the HDD and putting it in another slot?

Hello guys, after stalking these forums and researching about gaming laptops from zero knowledge for the last few days in this topic I've decided to get the MSI. Right now i'm stuck between the MSI GT70 20C or MSI GT60 20C.
The only difference I can see between those two is the 15" or 17", so my question is,
Will the GTX 770 perform better on the 15" or the 17"? Or is there no difference at all?
I'm only planning to play Battlefield 4 & Rome 2 on maximum settings (will it be able to run them on max?) when they come out this fall.
I don't really mind the screen size but if the graphic performs better on the smaller screen and the fact that there's a $100 rebate on the GT60, I'd go for it, but i just can't decided between GT60 and GT70 :/
Any help would be appreciated!
-
I'd do gt70
-
There isn't any performance difference between the two. However if you want to play BF 4 on max settings, you better get the GT 60/70 2OD (GTX780M). GTX770M just ain't gonna cut it.
-
The GTX 770 will perform better on the lower resolutions, screen size don't matter
-
That's interesting! Are you talking at 1080p?
-
Damn.. really? :/
What about at least High and no AA?
Every MSI i see with an GTX780M is $1,999
Do you know of anything else that's worth it but also is cheaper with a GTXM780? -
Î would imagine High and no Aa
-
Try xoiticpc force
-
Yes, that is hard to answer... but thanks for all the help. I'll be ordering soon, just have to decide gt60 or gt70... wish I could see the screen in person.

Hey i recently purchased an MSI GT70 20C-065US and I was wondering if there is an option of some sort to only use AC adapter power and not charge/ use the battery pack while its in the laptop to prevent overcharging. Or should i just continue leaving the battery pack out of the laptop and use it as i have been doing?
-
I'd like to know too
-
This was commented on in the GT70-2OD forum. Users observed that when plugged in, the battery will charge until 100%, then it stops charging and restarts when the battery drops below 95%. It will not overcharge. Some users thought there was something wrong when they saw the battery not charging.
-
This is 100% correct, been that way for every laptop I've owned for many years now.

Touch Pad driver update: stop accidentally activating the charms bar.
For anyone interested. The Synaptics driver on the drivers CD is not the most most current version, and Windows 8 fails to find the most current driver correctly.
The drive can be downloaded: Drivers | Synaptics
The newest driver adds the enable/disable "edge swipes" option, which is helpful if you are inadvertently activating the charms bar while using the touch pad. This was driving me crazy.

You can perhaps visit a computer store in your area such as Microcenter or Best Buy just to look at similar matte screens. Also, I'm pretty sure there was an upgrade option to a glossy screen.
I absolutely love my screen and will never go back to a glossy. The colors are so vibrant and bright, my games are like whole new games. Mine is the upgraded matte screen, not the stock one though. -
I'm in NB, Canada, not much up here. But I did find an Asus G75VW with the same screen according to xoticpc and it looked pretty good. I wasn't impressed with the viewing angles especially the vertical, but they weren't terible either... much better than my dell from work. I'll probably spring for the screen update if I go with the gt70 but I really would like to see the gt60, people rave about the 95% gamut matte upgrade for that... I dont see a huge difference in the size but of course it is noticeable when side by side. My dell has a 14 so even the 15 looks bug. Do you mind shipping your gt70 up here so I can see it before ordering if I pay shipping one way

Anybody getting a static sound from the headphone jack when the gpu is under load? Makes playing bf3 annoying..
-
First time I've heard of this about the MSi G series. But I've heard similar reports from many Sager users. Apparently, their systems emit an annoying static sound from the headphones when the systems get under load. Could anyone else confirm this? Anyone else having this problem?
-
Seriously ?
-
It doesn't happen when the notebook is idle, just when the dGPU is active and loaded. If anybody else wants to test this, try plugging headphones in and running MSI Kombustor or something.
-
I will when í get my gt70
What do u have -
I have the gt60.
-
I'll try this later. I haven't even used my headphones yet because the speakers are so awesome. Games and movies and music I used to listen to on headphones I don't anymore.
-
Sure thing! In fact, just keep it - I'll get myself another one.

(Sorry, double-post)

Yep. It's the unused Windows 8 language packs (apx. 30 of them) being targeted for removal in the background. The process that triggers the automatic removals is activated after 10 minutes of system inactivity. You then get the Features Configuration screen at the next restart. Basically, for each unused language pack removed, the next restart will take about 10 minutes as the clean-up service clears that pack out (at least on this model's 7200 rpm system drive).
After a couple days of use I found the links below and went to manually remove all unused language packs: there were only 6 left to go. Having gotten rid of these last 6 (and waited an hour at the next restart) the Features Configuration screen has not reappeared. I've read about people returning these laptops in frustration before they managed to get through all the language pack removals, but if you wait it out the problem will eventually resolve itself.

I'm really considering getting the GT60 2OC-022US. My only concern is battery life; can someone confirm that for normal use (surfing, office, etc) you can get over 4 hours? It edged out a GE60 2OE-003US and probably the 3740QM Thinkpad W530 model but the W530 has an awesome battery life for normal use (by comparison). What convinced me was the expand-ability (SSD and HDD without having to unmount an ODD [it would be a tougher call if there was a seperate mSATA port]) and the fact that a 2nd battery is less than the $200 price difference for the W530
I wish I could actually see all three in person but short of a long road trip (or someone sending all 3 to me
) that's not going to happen
oh and I'm thinking BestBuy, mostly so I have a place to go complain if it has any defects like strange fan noises or other fluke issues. -
Greetings, first time poster long-time browser here.
I'm thinking of getting the GT70 here and just had a question. I usually order from NewEgg, but saw a previous poster order from gentechpc (which I've never used, reliable?) and they offer a free IC Diamond Compound. I was wondering, is this worth it especially given how hot these can get? And does doing that violate the MSI warranty?
Looking forward to more impressions! Need a new desktop and laptop for work/gaming (both are ancient) and with kids/needing to be mobile thought this would be a great way to do both.
-
Yep, you can get 4 hours of use. Brought my gt60 to work yesterday and it lasted that long while I was installing updates and stuff.
-
Can anyone provide estimates of GT70 battery life while browsing over WiFi? Wondering if one can survive a day of college.
-
like r3d said,4-5hrs, i'll test when i get mine
-
Updates on laptop:
bf3 ultra after 3 hrs never got over 85C on cpu and gpu (no turbo fan, but using a cooling pad for elevation)
dishonored maxed after 2 hrs never got over 75C on both
This laptop runs pretty cool compared to others I've seen, love it.
I love how much battery life this thing has! It lasts me an average of 4-5 hours as other have said here.
XoticPC has sent me the hard drive I was missing without any hassle so that's good.
My only gripes with the system are that the top panel is kind of loose, not sure if that's just my system.
Also, the keyboard LEDs have a greenish tint on some keys (space bar, Alt Gr, left control, right arrow key, numpad 0) if you set them to a whitish color, which isn't too big a deal but still kind of distracting.
Images of discolored LEDs (kind of hard to see in picture, but trust me it is fairly noticable):
-
Glad to hear you are getting good temps. Have you repasted GPU and CPU?
-
The bf3 temps are pretty much what I have with a gt60-2oc with IC Diamond paste from Gentech.
-
I hope I don't have to...
-
Never repasted.
-
well that settles it, I am going to get it because there is nothing else with a quad core that even comes close in terms of price, performance and battery ratios
biggest complaint is probably going to be the back ports but they are great for a dock, bought or built with cables and duct tape/sugru
that and windows 8 without a touch screen and unrealistic expectations like more usb ports and battery life, less weight and the fact no stores have them near me
and potentially that it is too fast, I mean if I don't get to slack off waiting for my code to compile, when am I supposed to have some downtime -
Put the SSD on the primary slot nd move the 1TB to the secondary bay, because MSI recovery DVD will recovery OS to the primary bay.
-
What's your fps with bf3 ultra? Notebook check says the 770m gets around 30fps which isn't playable imo. Did you disable anti aliasing or anything else?
-
I've read that ghosting a HDD image to a SSD isn't good, does the recovery disc do a reformat that makes this a non-issue?
-
Any suggestions on memory brands when upgrading? It appears that three empty slots exist while the 8gig is integrated?
-
Update on this, the noise is much more noticeable on my JVC fx101 and my vsonic gr02be earbuds (which have 16 and 24 ohms of impedance respectively) than on my audio technica ws99 which is a 37ohm headphone.
-
So what are you saying? Sorry I'm new to headphones
-
If the noise coming from my gt60 isn't an isolated incident, people who use headphones with high impedance (generally big headphones) will be less likely to notice it than people using headphones with low impedance (generally small headphones or earbuds).
But for anybody curious enough to test for the noise, I would recommend using low impedance headphones (e.g. ipod earbuds or something) just to see if it's there even if it might not be noticeable with the headphones that are usually used. -
Śo dr.dre studios wouldn't buzz too?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It has 4 memory slots. Any is fine for all but the most score hungry overclocker. -
I keep everything maxed but disable anti aliasing which gives me 45-50fps
-
Is the 4 to 5 hour battery life with the gt60 2oc only achievable using power saver mode (with Intel igpu enabled), lowest brightness, and WiFi off or can it be achieved with a moderate brightness, balanced performance mode, and WiFi on (including Intel iGPU enabled)?
