Are you at 1080
-
I get 4-5 hrs with power saver mode but keep brightness around mid and wifi on, even watching some youtube vids as well and Intel gpu on. I'll test it out with balanced mode tomorrow.
Side-note, I was actually able to run dishonored maxed out with the nvidia card for 2 hours before it died, which was the same as the battery life on my previous laptop with power saver on
love this laptop
Yep, 1080p full screen -
Is the 770 m gtx that bad?
-
If you install your own SSD you don't need to format it, all you need to do is install on the primary slot and use recovery DVD to re-image your SSD. after the SSD is re-imaged you can put it in any slot you want, BIOS will boot from the SSD that has Windows boot manager in it.
-
You're mentioning a recovery DVD which I don't have. Would using the tools within windows 8 to create a recovery disk and a system image also work for a future hard drive upgrade?
-
Use the msi burn image tool that comes with the laptop to create a recovery disk.
An alternative method is to create a bootable windows 8 image either CD or usb. You don't need to put the new hdd in the old harddrives slot, but then you have to take the old hdd out otherwise windows 8 won't install. -
Hi, just a quick question here. In the stock gt60 build, with the 128gb msata and the 1TB HDD, does the OS come installed on the mSata or the HDD?
-
I'd assume
-
My GT60 still hasn't arrived.....
To anyone currently having this laptop, is there a bracket in the secondary HDD slot, in case of aftermarket upgrade? I mean, I ordered with only one SSD, with the second slot empty. I already bought a new SSD, and I was wondering if I need something to hold it down, or the bracket is already supplied. -
Hey Guys,
I had quite a lot of reading here between a Clevo P150SM and the GT60. It seems to me people actually put some thought in designing the GT60 (i.e. the thermal bridge between the heat sinks), which I can appreciate as a mechanical engineer.
However, since MSI isn't introducing the notebook in the Netherlands, I have to get it elsewhere. My only option is to get one from France (long story, but importing outside of the US means paying 21% taxes, and another 6% over the total).
The only problem with that is the keyboard; which will probably be AZERTY, and I'd rather have a QWERTY.
I can get an QWERTY-US SteelSeries Keyboard, but It's listed for the GT60 0NC or GT780 / GX780.
Does anyone know if these keyboards are exchangeable?
Or if anyone sells them in the US (Any import under 200 is duty free, iirc)?
This is the second to last problem to tackle... Can't wait to get my hands on it
Thanks, -

You can get it here:
MSI GT70 2OC-048NL - Laptopshop.nl
I would also recommend replacing the HDD with this:
Samsung 840 500 GB - Computerstore.nl -
Since xoticpc forgot to put my 2nd drive in my laptop I only had one drive in as well, and the bracket and screws came in the box separately, not actually in the laptop

Thanks for the link, however, that is the 17.3" version, isn't it? I'll be moving it around quite a bit, and 17.3" is just too big for me.
I was thinking about an ssd. I bought an 840 Pro not too long ago, so i might transfer that one. Or go mSata, if the laptop comes with the superRAID function. Spread the investment
Any thoughts on the keyboard?
-
I have a single 840 pro in a GT60. You won't be disappointing with that option. It's very fast and hasn't had as much as a single hiccup. They also have 5 year warranties.
-
Sorry man, GT60 2OC is not avaible in the Netherlands. I think you will be better of with this one though. Shipping from America + VAT (21%!) will make the price even higher. Also, I have never ever had a problem carrying my old 17.3" Sager / Clevo around. The difference in size between 15" and 17.3" is, in my opinion, not that big. Only a few centimeters.
HOLY ! Just found a Dutch reseller that sells a GT70 2OD Dragon Edition (780M!) for €1954!

Evening gents,
I've got a little problem here. I own the GT70-2OC and Windows 8 crashes way too frequently. This is the second model I now own, having exchanged the prior one at the store (that one had bad motherboard or RAM, memory leaks everywhere), Mostly casued by the SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT HANDLED problem. However, I have been checking my drivers and they are all up-to-date. System seems to crash whenever the computer seems to want to go to sleep mode. Anyone know if I have to do a BIOS update and if I do, how do I run it?
Other than that I don't have any complaints, and here are a couple of observations:
- Some steam games don't seem to work, (Civ 5 is being a hard one to solve, and Dead Island).
- The computer can't seem to know which graphics to take, and I wonder how I could disable the Intel one, so that only my Nvidia functions.
- Computer is extremely quiet, and will only get loud if you use the cooler booster.
- Sound is amazing, with or without headphones. -
Hi,
do u encounter any hangup during the windows update? mine hangs at 15% for more than 15 minutes during both windows update that took place..
Thanks! -
This is a graphics driver error, did you change the video card drivers? Here is a thread for the issue with instructions to fix:
System Thread exception not handled in windows 8 pro - Microsoft Community
You should not need to manually force the graphics switching, things run smoothly if you are set up correctly. -
I did. I just left it running overnight while I slept and it was done by the time I woke up. Seems like it just takes a while.

Guys, what's sound blaster cinema? Just software? Or a actual chip?
Thanks!! -
Software. The chip is made by Realtek.
-
what's sound blaster cinema tho
Thanks!! -
I originally tried to start a thread, but didn't get any replies. Hopefully, I'll find some opinions in this section.
Original post:
Hello everyone,
I'm fairly new to these forums, but have been reading them quite a bit lately as I sought to zero in a replacement for my Sony VAIO VGN-FW465 (16.4" laptop from late 2009). Thank you for providing such a valuable service! I am quite busy these days and have not stayed "current" with computers for many years -- this forum really helped me get back up to speed quickly and make an informed decision.
A few words on why I am buying a new computer. I still like the Sony and will probably find a use for it, rather than sell it. Aside from a battery that only lasts 20 minutes, it is quiet and fast enough for most of my needs. I occasionally find some free time to play a game though, and for that task the AMD/ATI 4650M video card struggles. I am also "on the road" a lot and would like to be able to use my computer for processor intensive computation of GIS-like data. This work load involves many different steps (data conversion, application of correctors, and gridding). Half of the steps are bound by I/O (network speed or HDD speed) and the half are bound by the processor.
Here's what I have ordered with Gentechpc:

I also already have a 256GB Samsung 840pro that will be installed in addition to the included 1TB drive.
I have yet to initiate the transfer to pay for the laptop, so that means there is still time for me to call them and change the order before they start to build my machine. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.
Question 1:
I am very tempted to move up to the 4800MQ processor, but the increase in cost is significant at $245. I wish there was a more intermediate step like there appeared to be with the 3xxx series. I thought I remember seeing the equivalent 3rd generation upgrade cost closer to $150. Do you think this upgrade cost will decrease significantly in the next couple of months and be worth waiting for? I would wait a couple of months if it would save me $100.
Question 2:
Can these processors, in this laptop be overclocked? I used to do this about 10 years ago and would not be afraid to give it a try with a well cooled laptop, but it seems that unless you have a "K" series desktop chip, overclocking is nearly impossible. If I was only buying this for gaming, I would not be concerned with the 4700MQ at stock speeds, but I would like to get everything I can out of it for my work related processing.
Question 3:
I've upgraded several hard drives in the past by using software cloning options. This has worked well, but my only experience is with Windows 7. I plan to clone the installed drive to my SSD. Does windows 8 present any new issues when cloning a disk?
Question 4:
My Sony has a DVD/RW/Blu-Ray reader that looks like a normal slim line drive. If it does not have proprietary mounting, could I swap optical drives between my Sony and the MSI? Also, does anyone have any comments about the feasibility of using the OEM included Blu-Ray software (Windows BD-Live) from my Sony on this new machine? I realize this last part is a long shot.
Question 5:
Should I opt for an upgraeded screen? I am not as concerned about this, since I will often have the chance to plug in to a desktop monitor, but is the stock screen crummy? Or is one of the available upgrade options so eye popping that I can't pass it up?
Question 6
Should I post any of these questions in other sections of the forum instead?
Thank you for reading my long introduction post! I appreciate any response and will post more questions as I think of them.
Assuming I get the laptop in the next couple of weeks, I should have some time to post pictures or run some tests for those still considering a purchase. I haven't been in to bench-marking in years though, so you'll have to be very specific in your requests.
Regards,
Andrew -
Overclocked 100 mhz on memory and ram and used dxtroy to limit frames to 50fps. For hawken this lowered my temps a bit to the high 60s and low 70s.
However farcry 3 ran much hotter. Temps almost hit 90c for the cpu and were in the 90s for the cpu, little worried what temps would be without dxtroy.
Debating to return the laptop due to these temps, and this is with a repaste. -
Can these processors, in this laptop be overclocked? I think
-
Whèred you get your gt
-
Yeah, you can overclock the 4700mq by 200mhz using Intel XTU. You can also undervolt it, which is nice.
-
What's intel xtu
-
Yes, use Windows 8 backup and restore to create image to a external HDD or DVDs also work for future hard drive upgrade.
One of the trick about Windows image backup is that, if your hard drive has larger capacity than the hard drive you are going to upgrade, you will need to shrink the partition of your current hard drive to be less than the hard drive capacity you are going to upgrade before backup the image, otherwise it won't work. -
And I find that the Partition Wizard boot disk is a great way to make a smaller partition. It is often tough to get the partition small enough in Windows due to the "unmovable" files.
By the way Ken, I think we spoke today on the phone. I called in this morning and gave you my CC info. It is nice dealing with a smaller shop! Thanks, looking forward to the new laptop. -
"Sound blaster cinema" is a program made by Creative to control and add enhancements to the audio.
It auto starts with my computer and I use it to change audio enhancements.
MSI makes the motherboard using a Realtek audio chip. MSI adds some of their own motherboard audio technologies (audio boost), and they license the Sound Blaster Cinema software from Creative to add further enhancements. -
I'm still waiting for my replacement unit. I first received my laptop 8 days ago and I started the RMA inquiry 6 days ago.
Paying for the shipping back across Canada (100$) under 6 days because of a faulty unit sucks. They received it yesterday. Can't wait for them to process it and send me a new one. -
Amazon, if you buy from amazon easier to process returns, but only buy directly from Amazon.
-
Thanks for the tip
-
So íts like beats audio?
-
Right. HP laptops with "Beats" use Beats software to control sound.

getting my gt70 wed..................
any tips on 1st boot -
Good info. How do I access the sound blaster cinema? I can't seem to find anything except the Realtek HD Audio Manager in the control panel. Is it possible the sound blaster cinema wasn't installed on my machine?
-
It was already installed on mine, maybe check and see if its on the drivers disc?
-
Creative software is on the drivers disk. I ordered my GT60 with a clean install of win 8, it only had the Realtek software initially.
-
Just picked up mine! Everything going smooth, gonna post some game benchmarks tomorrow. I'm having some problems running PES 2013, probably driver related. It's not running smooth Lagging continuously. Anyone else play this? Also, I can't open the keyboard led manager. no matter what I do. Gonna try downloading from MSi website.
-
Do u like it
-
Theres absolutely nothing to hate! Loving it totally. The keyboard and speakers are awesome. And the look is pretty cool. Pictures doesn't do justice. I bought this after looking at multiple reviews and pics, and it looks way better when its in front of you.
Quick question : my GTX 770m doesn't show up in HWmonitor, how do i check on temps? -
Good deal, how long did it take from the time you ordered to received? Guess I am just antsy because I am still waiting, so its what you do, wonder about things.
The game I am hoping to hear back from people on is PlanetSide 2. Although I am not going to be playing it (or very often anyways) I want to get a jist of the performance on that game because Sony has other titles coming out built on the same engine. -
How is your idle laptop noise level in a quiet room? Is it quiet noisy or barely audible?
-
Barely audible. The fan is very quiet when idle and doing light tasks like browsing the web.
