I have no idea about the warranty. You might have to ask msi.

Laptop runs hot, like 90c when gaming with the stock clocks. Anyone know why?

You might have to clean out the dust between the heatsink fins and the fan. Take the heatsink off, take the fan out of the heatsink, clean everything, repaste the CPU/GPU/NB and your temps should go down a lot.

90C is not too bad, temperatures can depend on the games. The 627 cooling wasn't magical, but definitely consider a re paste as suggested, that solves a lot of problems.

    Hello,

I tried to read the whole thread, but it is quite long, so I am hoping someone can help me with this.

I was wondering how to configure the P1 button on the dashboard. The first time I pressed it, it opened a window that had the configuration options, but after I chose a program, I can't figure out how to access it again.

Since then I have also upgraded to windows 7.

System Control Manager, is the little software that makes the touchpanel work, and its icon is like a blue eye

Alright, I had it turned off before. Thank you very much for helping me out.

Edit: Aslo, in case anyone who is looking through this is having the same problem I was, I will tell you how I fixed it.

My laptop recently started overheating very easily. I tried cleaning it out, and that helped a little bit, but didn't fix the problem entirely. After a lot of research looking for a fix to this. Someone suggested reverting my graphics drivers. I did and it made a huge difference. Instead of idling at around 50-55C it is now usually 40C. It still heats up pretty quickly, so I will soon reapply some thermal paste, and hopefully that will fix it completely.

    Hi,
Sorry if this was posted somewhere but I didnt see it. I have a GT627 which I have upgraded to have a qx9100and a fx3700m in it. They both work fine however the CPU gets very hot. I have undervolted it to 1.075vat 2.26ghz and have reapplied AS5 to both the cpu and gpu however it is still idling ~59C and loads at 85C. Any suggestions as to what I can do? Thanks

Exactly. I'm using a Zalman NC1000 which makes it not only run cooler but also feels much more confortable. The few times I use without it feels very awkward beeing completely flat.
My Q9200 idles between mid 30's and mid 40's, with the hottest core hitting 85 celsius rendering 3D models with all four cores at 100% load. Gaming is way cooler.

Hi guys...I need an info and that seems the best place to find the answer. I'm considering to upgrade my gt627 GPU and I'd like to know what's the best substitute for the 9800m gs that come with the original cinfiguration. Can someone tell me if there are different solutions and what's the best?

Anything that comes with MXM 2.1 III or HE should theorically fit. Fx3700m are hot as hell, GTX260m very hard to find, but even if you do it, I think around 200€ is too much, 9800m GTX are extremely expensive and 9800m GT have only 512mb.I think the 4850 might work as well, but they're 512mb also.
Not an easy choice bro... that's why it is the only part I haven't changed in mine

thanks nitro...so u suggest that's better change the cpu instead of the gpu...I'll start considering it and if u have some suggestion in that case you're welcome. And while I wait to decide what to do...can u tell me where can I find a good tutorial on how to overclock the gpu or the cpu because i saw something but i'm still confused. I already have the bios that allow me to use the 20% overclock so maybe it's not necessary to change it and all I need is to change the parameters....bu as u can see i'm confused :)

If what you want is more performance in games, cpu will barely help. If you have the money for a nice gpu and you find it, go for it, but as I told you, is not an easy task. I updated my cpu because I use my laptop mostly for design, especially for rendering 3D models. For the same reason I upgraded to 8Gb ram. But still, if gaming is your main use, a gpu upgrade is a better idea.
If you install Nvidia System Tools you will be able to overclock the GPU from the Nvidia Control Panel. Just slide the bars to increase the different clocks and test stabilty with Furmark. I assume you have a 9800m GS, which runs at 530/1320/800. I'm pretty sure it can ran at GT clocks, like mine does, which are 600/1500/800. That though, will give you about 2 extra fps only. Mine has the limit at 635/1550/800 without incresing voltage, but I hardly get 1 more fps, which is pointless.
In short, if you want to increase the graphic power of your GT627, upgrading gpu is an option but first, they're hard to find, and second, prertty expensive.

    ^ WRONG.

Most powerful GPU for this laptop is widely available for 200$, its the 3700m. It just takes a lot of cooling modifications to really get the performance upgrade...

Why wrong? 200$ is not bad, but it involves cooling mods, most of them are located in the USA, which makes it more expensive if you don't live there and is pretty hot. So yeah, it's an option and that's why it's the first one I mentioned, but as I said, is not that simple.

I picked a FX3700 off Ebay for $200 shipped. It ran too hot, IMHO. Installed HD 3870 for $110. I needed a RK Computer Heat Sink for GT627. The backing plate required #1 screws. Package of screws off Amazon for about $8 shipped.

Furmark with 9600m gt was 442. With P9700 and HD3870 it runs 11600+
Difficulty of installation, about 8 out of 10. AlanP

Can anyone point me to an explanation of what to look for to determine if my gt627-218 can handle a quad cpu? It's time to start maxing this baby out and 123 pages of thread is pretty intimidating to try to wade through.

Also, has it been determined that all of these can handle 8 gigs of ram?

    Here
    [IMG]
You need the 3 grey VRMs to fully support quads.

This one does NOT support quads:
Although, you may still be able to get it to work, with issues such as these:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/gat...-intel-quad-core-q9100-gateway-fx-p7801u.html

Anyway... I actually have an extra motherboard that supports quads if you decide you need it. I have a gt628 motherboard too, it uses ddr3 memory, otherwise its the same.
I'm pretty sure they will all support 8gb, yes.

    Good luck!
Oh, and if you didn't know, q9200 is the best option, but there are a few like the QAJF which doesn't have temp sensors (you'll need those) the QAVR is good.

Thanks Niff! I checked and it appears mine will support a quad. That's awesome. That said, I'm disappointed to see that ddr2 is still so expensive. I'm pretty broke at the moment, but I'd love to know what your asking price is for the gt628 motherboard out of curiousity. That's assuming you're saying its for sale. Feel free to PM me if you'd like.

Hey all, I was wondering if any of you could recommend a good college backpack with a laptop compartment that would fit the GT627 well? I've seen good-quality backpacks, but all seem to have a generic one-size-fits-all compartment. Is there one specifically for this size of laptop? Thanks!

Here are the dimensions if they could be of help:

    14.09" x 10.24" x 1.06-1.22"

Aquafloe, I just use the backpack that MSI included with my laptop. If you got one, give it a whirl. I was surprised at the build quality and comfort. Mine is just now starting to show signs of wear after two years of constant use. That's probably not much help, but its all I got.

I actually got mine used, so it didn't come with one. And I can't seem to find them for sale. I thought there might be some really nice pack specifically for this size of laptop, just so it wouldn't jostle it too much when I use it.

    hi guys, quick question:

so i accidentally popped a screw from my GT628 out of sheer stupidity...

for those who already took their lcd assembly off, you guys know where the hinge cover is supposed to be screwed to the top panel? that screw socket thingy came off from the red plastic panel, because i put in the screw for the hinge cover (w/o the cover, because i forgot it comes in last) first, then i bolted the actual hinge on the body. the screw for the hinge cover was in too deep, because the cover wasn't there, so it caused pressure and eventually broke when i tightened the screw for the hinge.

now the screw socket thingy was pried out of the plastic panel with the screw still on it. (did what i say make sense? i'll post pics later so it'll be clearer)

do you guys know what i can do about this? can i just stick the socket back in and glue it with epoxy or something? it bothers me that one of my hinge covers is not bolted to the body, haha.

ugh, stupid me, i shouldn't have hurried putting it back together. gf was calling so i tried to do it quicker. gah. >_<

Hey guys, I'm about to do several things to my GT627 when I get it back in a week. I'm planning to follow moral hazard's advice and undervolt the GPU in order to reach higher OCs, as his posted bios should do, anybody else with any experience with this?
I also want to replace the thermal paste, and I am about to buy IC Diamond 7 Thermal paste. Any guides to disassembling the laptop and where / how to apply the thermal paste for both CPU and GPU and any other important spots?

Anybody else with 650+ clocks and voltage mods?

Well, how many still have this lappy alive?
I use it like 4 times a year when I travel and about dozen times a week to watch TV stuff while I'm cooking.
A little of the paint on keyboard panel came off. Lappy gets pretty hot. Other then that it's working fine.

    Hello everyone,

I just upgraded my wifi module to an Intel 6300 as I've always had wifi signal qualify issues with the built-in Intel 5100 card. The new card has helped a bit. So far, I could only locate two wifi antennas in the laptop. Does anyone know if a 3rd is hidden somewhere, or do I need to install one myself?

    Thanks!

Hi I installed Windows 7 64-bit on MSI GT627 after harddrive failure.

However I don't have any sound coming out of the speakers (headphone too). The HD Audio Device properties in the Device Manager says 'This device is working properly'.
    I have tried various drivers:
    - The updated drivers suggested by windows 7
    - The drivers that come with Nvidia graphics card drivers
    - The latest Realtek High Definition Audio Driver (2.89) R2.38 for W7 64-bit drivers
    - The drivers on the MSI website for the GT627 (meant for Vista).
    - The drivers on the driver CD that came with laptop.

    Nothing works.

Do I need some obscure driver or is there something genuine wrong with the sound card (lose connections)? :(

I just repaired a GT627-216US and Windows 7 64-bit installed with no issues, a few of the drivers I had to force the Vista 64-bits ones to get them to work. Upgraded the CPU to P8600 2.4 GHz, screen to 1680 x1050 WSXGA+, put in a Killer N-1202 wireless with Bluetooth card. I had a spare WD 320GB SATA drive, but will be upgrading to a Seagate Hybrid 750GB. I am thinking of adding in an Avermedia A317 hybrid TV tuner as well for my business travel days. I've spent very little thus far on this repair and considering it was given to me as not working unit with broken hinge and screen. All in all a great little laptop.

You probably worked this out by now but yeah just use some glue. I used Gorilla super glue it has the rubber stuff in it to stop it from cracking. My hinge problem was significantly worse than yours (the entire plastic screw in portion on the back panel was broken when I bought it) I glued that whole portion together and it worked completely fine for like 2-3 years like that. It finally broke completely a few weeks ago though. No damage is done to the screen or anything when that hinge breaks but you may eventually need to figure out a different system. Personally I just took the entire screen/housing etc all off and am using the laptop as a media pc hooked straight to my tv...

I'm looking to upgrade my GT627's 9800m GS GPU. I'm looking at two possibilities:

    1. GTX 260m (from what I understand, a decent upgrade)
    2. HD4850 (a marginally higher upgrade)

I know the 260m is compatible, but I read that the HD4850 needs a modded heatsink to make it fit. I don't know if I want to take on a card modding project, so should I just go with the 260m?

The GTx 260m will work as is on the internal screen. If you want to use the vga or hdmi port you need some bios modding on the card. I was a proud owner of the younger brother. Look at my sig. :)

Hey, sorry to have another question so soon but I recently upgraded my GT627's P8400 CPU to a T9800. I used Arctic Silver 5 and applied a thin layer using a razor blade. I was uncertain when putting the heatsink back on if it was making a good connection to the CPU and GPU. When playing BF3 and monitoring with HWiNFO64 my cpu temps got up to 103c. I idle at around 39c. I'm worried that it's too hot under load. Should I try to reapply more AC5 and get the heatsink seated better?

EDIT: I reapplied and maxed at 98c during an 1.5 hour play of BF3. Is it likely to get any better with repeated use or should I consider applying again? I will mention that rather than spreading a thin layer with a blade, I put a dab on and let the heatsink spread it.

My situation hasn't really changed. What would be the best thing to do now?

Anyone out there still using their GT627 , or is it just me ? They seem to be a rare breed these days, did they all die?

    :)

    :D
Installed a stock T9600 2.8ghz core2duo and managed to overclock it to 3.8ghz max , 3.7ghz stable, using nothing but clock generator and the standard msi turbo button.

Also had my stock q9000 quad running around 2.8ghz but was a bit unstable so now turbo runs it up to around 2.45 ghz.

Come on are all the gt627s really dead ? :(
