I dont believe there in stock yet in the US. The NP8662 would be better for gaming.. The only GT628 in stock is the 1651 ID2 GT628 barebones..

    Better gaming, get the sager.
Better battery life, get the msi.

Anything else is just personal preference.

The SAGER/CLEVO is a little thicker and heavier but the footprint is just about the same.
Gaming on the SAGER/CLEVO is awesome.(I used one for a bit) :D
Build quality is excellent on the SAGER/CLEVO but you will be hard pressed to find one with a Blu Ray drive for $1300.
MSI is surprisingly lite and you won't find a thinner "gaming" laptop.
Gaming on the MSI is very, very good too not too far behind the SAGER/CLEVO.... REALLY! ;)
Build quality is excellent on the MSI also.
If you really want a laptop with Blu Ray drive then the GT628 fits right in your budget without sacrificing too much of a performance hit.(compared to the SAGER/CLEVO) + you get the TURBO mode function not found in the SAGER/CLEVO.
The only problem is the MSI GT 628 is not for sale yet.
    But it will be soon.
Only the MSI 1651-ID2 is available now( same thing as the GT628 but has Silver trim were the GT628 is Red)
All I can say is it ROCKS!

Sager HDD can be very cooky, dont forget that.

If you are planning on swapping the HD out, its worth it, but putting up with 50-66C temps, isnt.

Yeah, to be fair for college days, i may have concidered the smaller machine after all, but then again, my machine has survived bangs, scrapes and days abroad so im very impressed by build quality.

If you get a dual, get the P-series and do it for battery life/money saving. The Q9000 will be comparable/better now and better in the future... but it does take off 30-40 minutes of battery life.

Not to crazy about screen protectors.
Everyone I tried made the screen look faded or just not look right.

I have yet to take one of "my" laptops outside because I don't want anything to touch the screen (nothing annoys me more then when a rouge bug lands on my screen).

Wow, this laptop STILL hasn't been released yet?? MSI should have really tried to release this in August like they said they would since college kids are just starting school and all. If I were in the market for a laptop as a student, I would've skipped this by now since classes all started. Oh well, good thing I have time to wait, but..this waiting is unbearable!

You can always get the MSI 1651-ID2.
Same hardware that the GT628 is going to have but with a little different colored trim...( RED vs SILVER).
Personally I like the SILVER trim better.
The GT628 should have been out by now, I totally agree.

Actually, by definition there is no such thing as a GT628 barebones.

The whitebox version is the MSI 1651-ID2, which is being private labeled by some OEMs like PowerNotebooks.com, Xoticpc.com and others...or sold as a barebones.

Even when (or IF) the GT628 is ever released in the US it will not be available as a barebones because it will be, if released in the US, a fully built MSI branded unit.

So wait... are even the red trim "GT628s" barebones then? Because I swear I've seen GT628 in both Canadian and US resellers...

Even the Canadian model is named "MSI GT628-419 US" I know I'm not dreaming them because I've known people who have ordered some from NCIX(before NCIX removed them from their stock due to phasing out).

The point is they have yet to ship any because they have not come into the North American market. Just because someone offers them for pre-order does not mean any have shipped, or will ever ship.

How odd, then NCIX or whoever must be getting them from Europe or something because my friend genuinely got one form the mail(maybe they just painted a "barebone" and sent it to him?) and many stores advertise having some in stock(i.e not pre-order) when I emailed them.

I guess it's the same thing with those ASUS U80Vs whom everyone thought didn't come to North America yet we found stores in Canada who had them for a while before(and after) Amazon.com sold them.

Basically hardware wise they are practically carbon copies of each other with minor cosmetic differences.

I found the WXGA 1651 ID2 barebones for $725.42 at AVA Direct.. That is cheap and I am tempted to buy one for traveling being my AW is on the heavy side.. Although I prefer WSXGA I will see how much they have that one for first.. Here is the link to the WXGA model:

    http://www.avadirect.com/product_details_parts.asp?PRID=14366

Ok I found the WSXGA 1651 ID2 barebones for $789.60. Thats the cheapest I have found so far. Here is the link for anyone interested:

That's a nice price. RK is over 800, but they include the 9-cell battery. But neither RK nor AVA use paypal. I already have a 9-cell and frosty allows paypal, so that's who I got mine from.

Only Silver/Black for the new barebone model. Some of the previous models were available in the red/black color scheme as a barebone.

Yes the older (GT627) had the 9800M, the GT628 has not arrived in the USA yet. It's due this month sometime. I would check, either it's not red/black or if it is then it's the older model.

All that is available now with the 160M is the barebone MS-1651 ID2 (same as the GT628 except the color scheme).

I would really appreciate it if someone can clarify this for me.

The GT628 is a pre-configured system assembled by msi. The MS-1651 is a barebone notebook that can be configured to your specs. Companies like us and others market it and you can choose your cpu, memory, hard drive, o/s, etc. Or it can be purchased as just the barebone for a DIY project.

With the barebone you have a larger selection of components you can choose and are not locked into the manufactures configuration.

Both the GT628 and the MS-1651 ID2_New are the same chassis and hardware.

Anything that is GT, GX are msi's gaming series pre-configured models. They usually have the red/black color scheme.

Anything MS-XXXX is a barebone model built by us or whatever company you choose.

I am starting to hate MSI. What does delaying a laptop for so many months tell you about a company? What could be wrong. This is frustrating.

MSI isn't the only company which delays or even cancels laptop models they announce. ASUS has done so before and quite a few others.

Ay reason why you can't get a barebone and just spec it the same?

N.B Apparently, the model is released in Canada so it's mostly an issue of releasing it worldwide I suppose.
