The only reason is the warranty. MSI offers a 3 year parts/labor warranty which sounds really good.

It sounds good, but from what I've heard, it's a bit of a pain to use it(if you have to), because MSI isn't a large enough company in terms of mobile computing to provide large enough customer support(i.e. comments said it sucks).

I preordered this early August from frostycomputers dang they are taking so loong on getting this out. The main reason I wanted this computer is to play wow, command and conquer 3(4 when its released) SC2, and Aion. Im hopping for its release before aion comes out or I will be dissapointed.

I got my barebone from them. They even called to make sure that I knew it was a barebone (apparently idiots buy it thinking they are getting a complete laptop). Shipping was very, very fast.

How funny, people in the US who have the MS-1651 want the GT628...

I'm in Canada(where we have one model of the GT628) and *I* want an MS-1651 lol :p

Seems neither side is happy >.>

    Hey guys ...

I have a couple of questions about the GT628/MS-1651..

Is the whole outside actually aluminum or is it plastic made to look like aluminum?

How much flex is in the lid when opening and closing, if any?

How is the sound quality from the stock speakers?

I'm sorry if all of this has been covered, I just wanted to got it streaght for the ones who know...

I'm pretty sure it's actual aluminum because some parts of the laptop are actually still cold/mildly warm even after I've been playing a game for a good hour or 2. I've had mine for a couple days now and I don't really notice notice much or any flex. As for the sound I admit it is a little too low for me but I use my headphones most of the time anyway so not a big deal. This laptop has been nothing short of perfect for me since it has amazing gaming capabilities and on battery I've been able to get around 3 and a half hours max.

With the case made from aluminum , how does that effect WiFi? Do you have better or worse connectivity than with other laptops?

For clarity, the LCD cover and palm rest area have a brushed aluminum veneer over a plastic alloy. Neither of which will affect your WiFi connectivity.

    This laptop looks great.
I will admit the speakers are not one of it's good points, but everything else is fantastic.

Can you tweak the memory in the bios version from msi (the turbo-mode version)? RK said there wasn't an "alt-insert" advance menu, and that's where the memory stuff usually is.

It is not available in the newer version (1.0Z, & 4.31) but I'm pretty sure it was available in one of the older versions. It is not available in the shipped bios either (1.0V)

well if anyone ever finds out which one, let me know :) I would love to update mine to it, unless there's a reason why I shouldn't.

edit: where would I find an older bios? I mean, shouldn't the gt628 bios, with it's quad-core support and ddr3, be different then the gt627/older 1651 bios?

NCIX received a small small batch of gt628's in late august. It was something like 4 in total they received. If your unfamiliar with NCIX, they are located in BC.

Do you have any references or sources to back that up? As far as I know, after speaking to MSI representatives, the GT628 will be released a week before the Windows7 launch on October 22. They also mentioned that they are swapping out the older "Montevina" platform processors for the newer "Calpella" platform processors, which Intel said that they will be releasing at the beginning of October before the Windows7 launch. I seriously hope that it is worth the wait.....it's been 4 months since I pre-ordered it. Still waiting.....

KonstantinDK is correct, the GT628 is not coming into the US market.

While there is a model that will be released with Calpella, it won't be the GT628.

Rumor has it that MSI will release new i7 core 15" and 17" laptops in October.( Hopefully with no more delays)
You should get a timely refund and can divert those funds for the newer models.
And yeah that really sucks waiting all this time for nothing!
    Good luck!

Thanks, is MSI going to release the i7 laptops in beginning of October or near the end? And does anyone know how much it is going to be, because Im in college and don't have any money left :( . Because I would assume that a portable i7 notebook would be expensive.

You are talking about MSI branded gaming laptops, not the whitebox versions for the custom builder's channel.

The custom builders will have the new gaming versions much earlier than the same branded model, and as with the 1651 ID2/GT628 you will usually see more variety in the models that are whitebox.

They won't even be close to $1,300...the processors themselves are quite a bit higher. But then, so is the performance. :)

    Really!
Figured as much, but like everything else you want something better and faster using the latest tech you are going to pay more.
Hopefully the performance gain is equal to price increase.
Don't tease us like this man!
We need some specs, anything about what GPU they are slapping in this laptop?

I don't think anyone knows the answer to that after what MSI has said in the past. I think they are aiming for November/December, but don't hold your breath because we will never know! Just like the GT628...it could never come! or will be shipped sooner than expected. I think if you CAN'T hold out, like if you NEED a laptop now, then you should just get one now. But if you have the resources to wait, then I bet it would be worth the wait. As for me, I kinda needed a laptop, but since hearing about the news on the GT628, I decided to fix my POS broken laptop, and found out it was just a ram problem. Anyways, if you can't wait then just get it.

Give them some time, I7's are popping up everywhere, the m15x, the hp, wait until another upgrade, get a small term replacement for now but the tech is changing rapidly so it wouldnt make sense to splash out yet (unless the costs have really plummited then do it).

Our older CPU's are becomming wifi products damit!

Does anybody have this notebook with a t6600 proc? Would there be a big difference between one with a t6600 and another with a p8700? I can't seem to find any benchmarks with it running a t6600
