I forgot this thread even existed![]()
Well obviously the p8700 is the better cpu.
2.53ghz vs 2.2ghz
1066mhz bus vs 800mhz bus
3mb cache vs 2mb cache
However, I can promise that unless you are doing anything cpu intensive, you will not be able to tell the difference between the two.

Just gaming. So i should be okay with one, seeing as how i only play RPGs and not Crysis and the like?

I visited the MSI site and on the driver subsection of the gt628 there are only drivers for the 32bit windows 7. Does this mean i can only get the 32bit version, or do these work on the 64bit version as well?

It seems for some reason MSI has yet to release 64bit drivers for most of their models, but as Dead2th3world says, the 32bit drivers seem to work just fine.

I'm picking up my notebook on wednesday from a local retailer. I ponied up the extra cash for the p8700 proc for my piece of mind if not for anything else. From what i read on Notebookcheck, the GPU on this thing tends to get extremely hot so i would also like to purchase a notebook cooler. The problem is i don't know whether the fans on the gt628 blow air out just on the right side, or also thorugh the bottom. I'm considering the Enermax Aeolus or the Zalman NB2000 which blow air upward, and i wouldnt want the notebook fans and the notebook cooler fans to cancel each other out.
Also between those two coolers, which one would you choose? -

I would advise waiting until you get it to determine whether you want/need a cooler rather than relying on that review. If you decide you want or need one, you can buy it then just as easily as now.

Hi Everyone,
Newbie here. I just bought a GT628 2 days ago with the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.2Ghz
4GB DDR3 1066mhz
nVIDIA Geforce GTS 160M 1G DDR3 VRAM
320GB SATA 7200RPM
15.4" TFT-LCD Display
I'm pretty happy how it runs compared to my Celeron M 1.5ghz laptopAnyway, one thing I noticed is that i feel some electrical current leaking to the aluminum casing. The 1st few times i used it i didn't noticed this, but one time i touched it (the whole aluminum panel where the keyboard and touchpad is placed) while barefoot i felt the current on my fingers. I tried lifting my feet from the chair, and it's less noticeable. It's just there if i plug in the adapter and not if its just running on batteries.
I know this isn't normal, i just want to know if anybody out there have the same experience. and if so, what did you do? I'm planning on bringing this baby back to the store by tomorrow or the next day.
let me know guys!
Thanks! -
Rest assured, it is said that it won't kill yaYet it is quite disturbing....
Hmm.. where do you live? Usually in the US I don't experience it- only back in Korea I do. -
I live in the Philippines, and our plugs and sockets here normally are ungrounded. When you say grounding adapter, is this what you mean ( http://www.made-in-china.com/image/2f0j00tMpQEkbZaVceM/American-Plug-Adapter.jpg)? if this is it, i'am using one of these and still i can feel the 'electricity leak.' There are other adapters out there that are polarized like this one ( http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/666751/GE-Polarized-To-Grounding-Adapter/)... if it's something else, hope you could show me a picture so i would know what to look for.
I know this won't kill me but i read somewhere that prolonged and repetitive exposure to low voltage electricity can cause you to lose your libido... i dont want that...but seriously, it's quite irritating.

The GT628 does support Quad Core.

Wow oli, thats dam nice
Curious, wouldn't that cause alot of ram use and some possible cpu usage? -
-
Thanks alot guys -
Ahh nice man, yeah its definately nicely presented
. Looks the part, and guessing it feels
.
Ooh couldn't find the video, now i see itwill watch tommorow as i've just performed a reinstall with no addons :/ lol.
-
How'd you configure that, oli?
Also, rated and commented your video. -

my gt628 w7 is running on 4gb or ram... but i noticed in the memory usage, it's only using 3gb and found out that the video card is using the other gig as reserve resource. This adds up to 2gb for the video memory, 1gb from geforce gts 160m + 1gb from physical memory. Now to my question: does anybody know how can i turn off memory sharing? so i can make use of the full 4gb physical mem. thanks!
edited: btw... running on windows 7 -

What OS are you using?
-
-
Go to run then type in MSCONFIG
Go to the boot tab then select advanced options.
Enable Maximum memory check box.
Reboot into BIOS Enable Memory Remapping fetaure. (location of this feature may differ per BIOS)
Usually in Chipset Features or in northbridge.
Save and exit.
Now return to MSCONFIG and Disable Checkbox for Maximum memory.
Reboot
Hope this helps. It fixed my computer. -
Here is the new URL of the GTA IV gameplay video (featuring our lethal machine) after I accidentally deleted it earlier. Kindly drop some comments & ratings if you have some time. Those initial nice comments somehow prevented some trolls & critics. Thanks guys!

Hey, as the GT628 outperforms the new GT640 (lol), gaming wise.
Im thinking of buying a new GT628.
I can get one with a Q9000 or P8700 with faster cores. Now i can't make up my mind
Any ideas? -
Q9000 Bud, games are taking advantage of multicore these days, and with the new arcitecture out, you need as much horse power to make it last.
Q9000 even at 2.0ghz is able to handle single thread games out there as far as im aware, and the GPU will take the aditional load im sure.
Sorry to jump on this rather heavily haha, but i do believe its the right choice! -
Agreed with cata regarding the Quad but why would you want to buy a GT628 when there's better machine coming around the corner with 5series on board and should be about the same price range?
And a good advise , when buying a gaming lappy , get the one with the most powerful GPU and not the processor ... processors can be upgraded any time and available mainstream , bloody cheap too unlike GPU. -
Hi guys. 'Tis my first post here so I'll start by saying gratz for a great thread.
I just got a GT628 with the T6600 CPU and I'm very pleased with it. There is only a problem. The Eco and Turbo touch keys do not work. I've read in an earlier post that I have to update bios and firmware. Thing is I don't know how. I'm not new to the computer world, but just haven't done this ever. If someone would be so kind as to explain how to I'd be ever grateful. Please explain step by step, including how to make a DOS bootable USB stick from win 7 or vista . Thank you very much and I look forward to a response. -
Ok MSI have a guide HERE, but this was designed for the GT627, as the GT628 is no longer on the MSI website, so you'de have to get the firmware version off someone that has a GT628.
You should only need to update the firmware. If this doesn't work, updating the bios as well won't hurt... -

Knew I would get proved wrong there.
After a 5 min search on the Australian site, it didn't show up in the list of g series laptops. There, happy?

I got the hang of flashing new bios and firmware. Thing is it still doesn't work. No Eco, no Turbo. And no OC options in the Advanced bios menu. Btw i got win 7 x64 if it makes any difference. COuld it be something with the SCM?
-
Just read in a MSI-1651 thread that CPUs with 800mhz are 99% likely not to function with turbo. But still something should happen when i press the button. And the Eco button too of course. That one doesn't depend on processor does it?
-
Did you pressed Alt + Insert in the advanced tab ? -
trying that now. I got SCM for win 7 32 bit. is that ok?
-
-
nothing happens when i press alt+insert
-
OMG OMG it worked!!!! I just reinstalled SCM!! YAY
-
OMG OMG happy for you!!!
-
Then get the latest BIOS/FIRMWARE .. use this to flash it http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=116721.0 very simple and easy to use , just follow the instructions. Good Luck -

EDIT: I know its there I just couldn't be bothered looking further than the g series pages, because all I was looking for was their guide for flashing bios/firmware.
