How is the cooling without the turbo fan override? Temps were not too high in testing but you did have the fan at like 100% and I don't think that I would want to have to use that mode when ever I play a game.

There is no turbo fan feature in 16F2 barebone

Yep I am - I manually set the fans to 100percent for the vantage test - the 3dmark11 test has been done with the normal profile though. Also something really interestin there is that I slightly bumped the clocks (903/1330), ran vantage with my power meter hooked up and I remember my 580m o/c was like between 175 and 200w during the 1st test while the 7970m slightly o/c stays between 130w and 146w peak during this same test - WOW

Any chance of a 1Ghz core benchmark? :)

Was the 580M OC with the voltage increase also?

But those power consumption numbers look pretty incredible! It seems to me that the 7970M is more like a 75w-80w TDP card rather than 100w.

    It was Ichime
    - 580M @ 840/1995 @ Vantage - over 200w peaks during the 1st test (P19000)
    - 7970M @ 913/1330 @ Vantage - 150w peaks during the 1st test (P22000)

    Will try tonight Geo :) Have a spare card in case this one is a bad overclocker :{

It will :) But you still need the 5870M heatsink !

Wonder what we could expect to spend to source a card & heatsink, plus wonder if there is any market to sell the GTX670M card included in the GT70.

For me the 670M is good enough I dont game much, but I do like to tinker & mod so I think for me this is more about the activity than the upgrade.

If people are able to get it to fit into the GT70, then I can't see any reason why it won't work in a GT780DX.

It will take modifications, that I'm sure will be posted here by community members once they become available.

Please keep in mind that the GT70 is largely unchanged from the GT780/783 as far as shape and basic design goes.

Nicely done! Are you gonna keep pushing it for a better 3DMark11 score?

Your CPU is starting to severely bottleneck the Vantage score, which is a shame.. I am thinking of attempting to get 26k overall tomorrow ~ using something like 1025/1550.

How well are your cards overclocking? 970 the max?

Paulow already posted the modifications he did to the heatsink so just follow that :-??, though it would be arguably harder for those with only a nvidia heatsink.

    Heres a question:

If you cannot get the 5870 heatsink, would using the thicker 5mm pads cut to shape (with 1.5 or 0.5mm layered on top for final contact) provide enough thermal transfer to the heatsink to make up for the missing aluminium raised blocks?

I'd have though that would work as long as you have the highest rated thermal pads you can get.

    I have a medion X6811 (GT663/MS-16F1 re-badge) with a 460m you see...

Either stack them up or find one with the appropriate thickness. Just make sure everything get in contact.

That could work Tanyrhiew but just makes things more difficult than they already are :) You need to try out I suppose with laying the card down on the heatsink and see where you need to add/remove thickness. If you can't, then just get the 5870 heatsink :)

Or just use the industrial size tube of IC Diamond :D

Yeah it will be messy and lets hope to god you dont ever have to take it off and re-paste but that stuff transfers way better than thermal pads and is not conductive so you can just make a thermal paste sandwich and know everything is well contacted.

    Thanks for the tips guys!

Obviously, using a 5870 heatsink is the preferred option but sourcing one in the UK is the challenge!

Obtaining the 7970m is another - who do you folks suggest?

For clarification, this test has been done with a 7970@903/1330 and 580@840/1680/1995 with 0.92v vbios so I can confirm at this point that the 7970m power consumption was about 30-50w lesser than the 580M's in this configuration.

If you don't believe, just ask :/

Limits have been reached overclocking wise - temps now have really been down so nothing to say, this card is beyond my expectation:

    Hello!

I wonde if anybody think I can mod my gt663 heatsink to this card? The graphic card is a gtx460m. And will the 150w power supply be enough? Or most i buy a new one? Where can I find a new power supply and where can I buy a hd 7970m? Or do someone know where I buy a hd 7870m? And how do the hd7870 look?

A note about modifying the gtx 460m heatsink for gt663 and ms16f1 users:

I'd have to see a picture to say for sure, but if you have 6 bumps on the heatsink instead of 8, I think the best option is to use copper shims and cooling paste... Just get some copper of the right thickness and it should take care of the vRAM... otherwise it will definitely be difficult to use.

Which cpu should i get to my gt 663 if i want to upgrade? Will it be enough with a 720qm? Or is a 920xm recommeded? I play BF3 and I dont want the cpu is the bottleneck so i cant get the power from the card.

If you have a gt663 with 460m or 560m, you already have the heatsink for sale there, the 5870 would be of use to you but its been sold.
See my post about modifying your heatsink (the picture confirms it has only 6 bumps, not 8):

You may also have to grind down the top of the heatsink as covered in the first pages of this thread.

Okey, the Vram them will not overheat if i do what you say? I have a 460m.

But if i get a 7970m the cpu will bottleneck, i have atm i5 460m. But the 720qm will it be to bad? Or should i get a 920xm? or 620m?

the 460M won't hold off your 7970M, you will just see lower benchmark scores but in game, this CPU coupled to the 7970M will be more sufficient.

If you really want to upgrade, get at least a 820QM - the lower cpu won't improve significantly the perfs, actually neither the 820QM but at least you will be happy with the benckmark scores :)

Ofc a 920XM/940XM will be ideal but that means you need a 180W PSU to replace your current 150W.

I'd say stick with the i5-460M for now.

Okey, so I will not see a lot of differnt if i change from my 460m to a 820qm in game like battlefield 3? BF3 is a very cpu usage game what i have heard, and know. The 460m is ''only'' 2 core cpu, but with 4 threads. And bf3 like to have a quad cpu.

But do the motherboard/bios support 55w cpu? Like 920/940xm?

Where could I get a 180w power brike? Is it a lot of different between 920xm and 820qm?

BF3 is very CPU intensive when you have a weak GPU - type 460M/5870M - with a powerful GPU like the 7970M, doesnt matter what CPU you have, BF3 will run perfectly - tested.

Your MOBO do support 55W, no problemo! For 180W PSU, you can check on eBay.

The only difference between 920XM and 820xm is: higher clock, higher TDP (55W>45W) and unlocked multipliers to allow o/c :) That looks cool in benchmark I can guarantee.
