Well the disc for me, but *cough* my results were never the.... prettiest......

I did also try flattening the whole heatsink (which is why pau1ow mentioned it) but it is VERY fiddly, but doable in a pinch.

It has arrived today. Some pictures. Not gonna sleep tonight untill I have it moded and the card installed and running. Paul, I noticed there's a pad on the HS in the chip area. Should I use that pad or better use AS5?

BTW Paul, you accidentally sent me an ODD front plate. Here's a picture of it also! :)

    Looking good!

How about you sell me that heatsink? :) Damn, could really use one also .. I'm NOT jealous, uhm okay, maybe a little bit ...

Oh well, i think i have to modify the hell out of my nVidia heatsink instead ...

BTW: You should absolutely remove that thermal pad and use AS5!

Ow man, I've been waiting for the card+heatsink duo since two months ago and today I finally get to install it. My true luck was with Paul indeed, who managed to sell me the heatsink, otherwise I don't know where else I could have found one.

So I'm gonna go ahead and post here about some stuff.

I managed to install the card, dremeled at it for about 40 minutes. I had to grind down another portion also, somewhere in the middle as some of the memory chips were not aligning properly.

With Paul's aid, at 1 am, I managed to figure out that I need throttlestop in order to get things working at their full capacity. I get around 5.7k 3dm11.

Trouble is, when I'm trying to OC the gpu, even by 10mhz either core or memory, I get screen tearing. What should I do? I am trying to OC with MSI Afterburner 2.2.4 with the hacks mentioned around the forum (the missing dll taken from 2.2.1 former version, the registry edit, and the cfg edit).

LE: A friend of mine with a similar setup 2960xm+7970 in a dell m6600 has no issue OC-ing , nor with throtelling. Could it be because I'm using a 180w powerbrick? He has a 240w one. Should I buy a bigger one?

when does the screen tearing appear?only at idle clocks or also under load? if its the first but stable under load u should change the unofficialoverclockingmode in the cfg file from 1 to 2 that will disable powerplay and ur card will stay at 3d clocks until u reboot the system. should take care of the screen tearing :)

I did that and couple more tests and I think it's the psu that is either too low or failing.

I tried a 3dm06 run and it reboot automatically. Ran the test on battery (where clocks on the gpu dont go higher than 450/300) and it ran just fine.

I might have to get me a 240w adapter and mod it with the MSI head.

did u check ur wattage at stock clocks? i mean, would it be THAT close to the psu´s limit that even a slight OC would cause it to fail? thats crazy...

If I need any kind of external equipment to check the wattage I don't have. If there;'s something I can do from within windows, tell me how please.

Thing is , even if I downclock I get ripples and tearing across the screen as soon as I press the apply button. Gaming works just fine, I played gw2 for about 2 hours (max 85 degrees for the gpu) and not a single glitch.

Maybe the psu is failing all together. As the laptop is still under warranty I'm gonna get a new psu soon so I will try with that.

If you apply clocks and see artefacts those clocks are not stable, however it may be the 2d clocks that are not stable..... Have you tried changing the overclocking method in afterburner?

I tried both methods and nothing seems to change. It's not artefacts, but more of a ripple effect where the image is shaking constantly, or when the screen gets refreshed. I'm trying to get a new psu as the laptop is still in warranty. I can't think of another reason why it would behave like this.

At stock clocks I can play no matter how long (just logged out of a 2h gw2 game) and no issues(throttle stop running).

The weird thing is that even downclocking the card has the same shaking effect.

With throttlestop running i get 5.8k 3dm11 and 21.7k 3dm06 (3dm06 reboots the laptop in 1 out of 3 runs).

As mentioned earlier, I had to dremel more of the HS than in the pictures Paul posted. See attached picture. (extra grind is in black)

I got stuff working, overclocking, overvolting (without Ov bios) and managed to score 6529 pts in 3dm11 with 1000/1450 clocks @ 1.05 V. Max temp 79 degrees.

GTX570M heatsink modification (because it is currently absolutely impossible to find a 5870M heatsink for my laptop)
    Hooray for thermal pads.

This is normal with a lot of the newer AMD drivers with certain cards. Happens in my m18x 6990m crossfire, and Envy 3D 7850m when I hit apply on ANY type of overclock. Hopefully they'll get a fix out for it soon in future drivers.

Finally installed with the modded 570M heatsink! Idle temp is 33 degrees and 80 degrees load with Furmark running for 20 minutes. No turbo fan.

I used 1mm thermal pads on the VRAM - and a combination of 1mm and 0.5mm on everything else.

I think it would be most useful to mention the height of pads that you placed on the vrams.

This is a great news seeing 7970M working in GT780DX. I'm currently using the MS1761 barebone and I'm looking forward to applying it into mine.

Could you be more specific about the cards you are using?
Where did you buy it, BIOS version & setting, etc.
    It would be very appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    1) The card is a blue 7970M with Dell vBIOS. Worked right out of the box. No other bios, setting or anything needed.
    2) Bought through eBay. Any card can be used, but i think it would need the DELL or Clevo HM vBIOS. I have both on my PC.
    3) I flashed my GT780DX with the newest unlocked BIOS (from Techinferno) prior to upgrading the card. Just in sake, and to get some more settings.

After that, i only installed the newest Catalyst 12.9 beta driver, card found, and worked as hoped. Though i need throttlestop to keep the CPU from throttling. The card clocks up and down as it should.
Finally, HDMI and sound is also working perfectly.

After long searches I found easier solution to swap my GT683DX gpu.
I ordered from MSI warranty GX60 gpu and heatsink for 400€. Now I only have to wait up to 3 weeks. If I get the stuff then ill post few pictures here too.

The heatsink does fit nicely, though I would order your own high quality thermal paste and a set of 0.5mm thermal pads to replace the stock ones if you plan to push it :)

    Hi rycyve

    Thanks for your info :)
    I too am interested at upgrading my GT780DX's gtx570m to a 7970m.
Does MSI warranty have an european number? Did they provide the heatsink free of charge?
You can find the 7970m through ebay but it costs 480€.

    @meaker

Will it also work on my notebook? The MSI card I mean :)
Do I need any BIOS update?

    I'm reallllyyyyy interested :p

If it works in his it most likely will in yours. We need to wait and see if the card will work in a non enduro system.

I made the order from my country's MSI warranty company. In order to do that you need laptop serial number which gave me alot of hassle. The GPU costs 329€ and the heatsink 66€ and the postage 5€. I was amazed myself that it came out cheap.
Now I only have to wait and then try. Incase the stock vbios won't work then i'll flash Dell vbios. For thermal paste I'm going to use Phobya HeGrease Extreme which I currently have on my gpu and cpu and temperatures compared to MX-4 have dropped 5-10 degrees. Stock thermal pads will be replaced with Phobya XT Self Adhesive Thermal Pad 7W/mK.

The other one with dell bios fits you more if the pc is from G-series.
But you can always do blink flash to vbios for other cards.

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my MS-16F2's GTX 560M with 7970M. I know that Clevo card with Enduro disabled vBIOS should work (Dell cards seem much more expensive), but I'm wondering about other stuff, like heatsink and stuff.

    I've been looking at this:
    Clevo P150HM P151HM VGA Upgrade Kit HD7970M 2GB MXM 3 0B with Enduro Disabled | eBay

Does the heatsink / screws / other accessories that come with all I need (and don't need to buy anything else), and will fit right into MS-16F2, or do I have to dremel my GTX 560M's heatsink?

    Thanks for your help!

In theory it could work.. But as posted by others Dell vBIOS works better so you have to do a blind flash.
Also Dell cards tend to have better memory chips and as such more OC headroom :)

Using a Nvidia heatsink with an AMD card..I don't think it could be THAT easy :p
You have to dremel a bit and use HQ thermal pads.
Coolsmarti did that and he was successful from what I saw ;)

If you are putting a 7970M in a 560M original machine I would suggest keeping it under volted long term.

hmm....does the GX60 have switchable graphics? if so, u would have to flash a modded vbios onto the card in order for it to work properly on ur GT683 (which, i presume, does NOT have switchable graphics?)

check my signature for the respective thread.

    cheers

edit: yup, as i thought, the GX60 supports switchable graphics whereas the GT683 doesnt. go ahead and try the modded vbios, should solve the black screen issue :)

Maybe you should flash a Dell vbios?

The Clevo vbios in Jaybee's post should work fine - that's the one I'm using and it's ok.

What might happen is that the 7970m from MSI is somehow different than the 7970m from other brand - i know it's unlikely - can we have a picture of the card please ?

Also, have you done a fresh installation of Windows ? That's needed if you don't sweep correctly your old drivers

I'll make some pictures of it a bit later, it has different colour then usual ones, it's green like Lepricons :)) ...Dell ones are blue and alienware are a bit dark right? this card looks physically just the same, only is green...Under windows it's working just fine, device manager is showing that it's 7970m but it says, that the driver has been stopped because the device seems not to work properly...CCC is not detecting it either.. I havent tried clean Win 7 installation yet, but, I wiped out every trace of nvidia drivers, also every bad AMD driver.....I'v seen similar or identical problems on this forum tho, somewhere in alienware, or clevo/sagers..those guys having same issue tried fresh Win installation, but no results..I'm gonna do it, but it's just weird :/....Right now it really seem like some enduro/driver issue :/
