    Hello,

Thanks for the replies guys. Hmm so my options are that I either modify my 570M heatsink to fit with the 7970M or get the MSI's official heatsink for it.

Any hope for the CLEVO's heatsink to work in this case?

    Hello,

I might be able to get myself MSI 7970M's heatsink or the 5870M's heatsink. Everything looks promising, we'll see.
I'm also going to update my I5 dualcore prosessor to I7 quadcore next week, but that should be easy.

very wise choice, since the dualcore would bottleneck ur new gpu :) best of luck!

Clevo heatsinks are an entirely different shape i'm afraid, the 5870 heatsink is not too difficult to mod however.

    Hello,

I was indeed able to get myself the MSI 7970M heatsink and the GPU with enduro disabled. I'll post updates when I get to install them.

It should be an awesome upgrade, I would grab some phobya 5W/mk pads (0.5mm thick) and some IC-diamond or MX-4 thermal paste to do the job properly too.

Thanks for the tips Meaker. I'll get myself some more pads for the cooling. I should have some cooling paste but I should check if it's still usable and good enough.

    Hello everybody,

Status update for the processor. I have upgraded my i5-2430m DualCore prosessor to i7-2820QM. The heatsink I should get later this week and the 7970m Graphic card at start of the next week.

    Hello,

Just liked to post an update on the whole GPU change operation. I was able to change the 570m to 7970m mostly without hazzle. The Clevo card came with X-bracket for Clevo units installed. I had to use a bit of brain and muscle work to get it out safe. After that the card worked right out of the box (enduro was off)

Ran some benchmarks before and after the gpu upgrade:

    3Dmark 2011: 2752 (oc'd 570m)
    Vantage: P11721, GPU: 10307
    Processor i7 2820qm
    Ram: 6gt ddr3 667mhz

    vs

    3Dmark 2011: 6134
    Vantage: 19022, GPU: 20082
    Prosessor: i7 2820qm
    Ram: 16gt 1600mhz ddr3

So alot of updating but everything seems to run correctly. Thanks for the tips guys!

Hi, I've been looking to upgrade the GPU in my MSI GT789DXR for a little while. It has all the default stuff in it like the GTX 570m and default CPU. I really want to upgrade to the AMD HD7970m. I heard in order to do this, i need the GPU, and heatsink. Is that it? I really want to do this upgrade, and need help doing it. Could anyone please help? Thanks! :)

I'll be getting my first 15" Clevo with a 7970m in a week or 2, I have more than a few idea's of what I want to do with the coolers, mainly replacing the crap alloy cast heat spreader with a solid lump of copper........... if only I knew someone with a CNC vertical mill and 3d scanner............

    ;)

I look forward to getting stuck in to this, but I've promised myself I must finish other projects first, so this may resurface in the Lynx Point era........... if not sooner

Nice thread, its a long one though :)

If I have a 7970m with a vbios which gives me a black screen how can I flash it to a modded vbios? I don't have any other notebook which could handle the 7970m. Does this mean that flashing the vbios is possible only from a notebook on which this card works?

Ok I got it... I didn't see your signature with the step by step guide...

Well just wanted to share my DIY experience with one MSI GT683R GTX560m heatsink that I wanted to have there and then working for 7970M, couldnt be ar$ed to go look around for compatible available 7970m heatsink as these were pretty hard to get or impossible to get back then, so I used my own Nvidia GTX560m heatsink and I did SHAVE everything off... of course it took me good few hours after to build appropriate height/thickness thermal pad sandwitches everywhere but it was all worth it. Heatsink served AWESOMELLY! Temperatures idle hovered around 29-35c for OEM DELL 7970m card , average use between 35-45c (ambient ~20-25c tho!), load OC'ed to 1GHz GPU and I think if I remember correct ~1350MHz GDDR5 werent more than 75-78c (NO TURBO FAN!!!) ... these were nice temperature achievements and beautiful benchmark scores that this card has achieved without breaking a sweat with my DIY heatsink job. Of course, I have used best of the best GPU thermal compound - ICD24, maybe that helped so much in temperatures too :)

    OCed Benchmark:

Hello. I bought 2 heatsinks for 5870M ( 3 pipes ) and I want to modify them to use with 7970M. But I do not know which bits I should remove and which just slightly shave. Can anybody take my picture and mark the sections I should remove and the one I should just shave ? I know, that there were some pictures before, but as the users said they were not accurate.

shave everything but not ram decks, and use as much thermal pads as needed everywhere else. save your time doing this and good results are guaranteed, reffer to my post above mod on nvidia heatsink

The 5870 heatsink requires only a little modding to make work actually, read the OP to find out more.

I'm wanting to fit a 7970M to my MS-16F2 and can no longer get the genuine MSI heatsink to suit.
What are the best options remaining ?
I'd prefer to get either the genuine MSI but I'm also happy to do the mod as per this thread.

I've now managed to get a 580M three pipe heatsink for the MS-16F2 but it's screws don't seem to go into the threads of the X bracket on the Dell 7970M I've got.
It seems that not all X brackets are the same...

So I guess I need to get an X bracket for a 580M.
I hope this will attach to the 7970M OK.

    Could anyone advise?

    styx932,

This sounds like you have the wrong vBIOS flashed to your card. I know the GT680 is a non-enduro (non switchable graphics) system and you need the 015.017 vBIOS.

You can get the BIOS images on the web (I forget where but search) and since you are hearing the Windows sound you should be able to do a blind flash (search theses forums on how).

Of course I'm new to this as I've not yet fitted my 7970M (waiting on the loan of a Dremel) so please do your own research too.

    Good luck.

    Hi there fellow/aspiring upgraders!

I am currently thinking of replacing my broken GTX570M in my Deviltech 5700 laptop (which is built with the MS-16F2 barebone) with a 7970M.
I've managed to find places to order the GPU as well as an original heatsink (from a MSI GX60), I'm also perfectly fine with flashing the vBIOS.
The only thing which I'm not sure about is how to deal with fan control, as far as I know I have no way of manually controlling the fan speed, let alone set it to turbo mode when needed?
Will it even be needed as long as I install the heatsink properly with pads, paste, etc.? Or what are the standard ways to control the fan speed in the first place?

    Thanks in advance!

    Saph,

Have you done all your research?

Are you sure the heatsink for the GX60 is suitable for the 16F2?
(I don't know.. But I do know that I couldn't obtain the correct heat sink via this forum when I did my upgrade and I ended up modding my original heatsink from my GT680).

As for vBIOS, I don't think you can blind flash in the 16F2 if your vBIOS is wrong (too high) as it will expect switchable (enduro) graphics which the 16F2 doesn't have so you'll want to make sure you get a GPU with the correct vBIOS.

Fan control doesn't seem to be an issue though you may want to force flash the EC firmware from a higher model MSI laptop (do your research) and you may want to get a 180W power brick instead of the 150W that your lappy may have come with.

    Don't rush into this mod!

I'd be interested to know if Saph or anyone else can get anymore of these heat sinks suitable for a 7970M in the 16F2 platform.
I had to radically modify my original heat sink but it's not level enough (I now need to remove copper) and the GPU throttles too quickly as I'm not removing heat quickly enough.

I also flash the NB EC Firmware from the MSI GT783 (which changed my soft buttons a bit) and I bought the 180W power brick.

The only thing I can't do right now is control the brightness of the display.

Is there a fix for this?

    Meaker & Saph,

Is there a good list somewhere of which MSI laptops are equipped with the 7970M?
And where do people typically get their heat sinks? eBay?
The shipping on eBay seems very high.

did you try using the unlock bios before installing the HD7970M...?
i own the GT780R and its younger sister GT60...
i'm pretty happy with my GT780R...
i've been upgrade the VGA with HD7970M...
mod some heatsink with manual tools because i don't have a dremel ( arrrghh !!!! )...
put in Xonar's Unlock bios and set to legacy bios rom on graphic seting...
    then that's it !...
boot up normaly...installing freshcopy of Win 7 on the SSD...
put the old HDD on the caddy bay...
    installing throttlestop...
and it is works like a charm !!!...the gaming temp are great...around 69-74 C for CPU and 68-72 C for the GPU with coolpad...
it even faster than my M17X R3...( yay ! )
    oh almost forgot...
    i do have 180W powerbrick... :) :)

Saph mentioned the GX60 too... I just want to be sure that these machines are the same design as the MS-16F2 so I don't get the wrong thing.

I'd love to know a good supply of such heat sinks.

I was hoping Majster_msi could supply such a heat sink but he couldn't last I asked.

Do you have any idea of good sources for such things?
(Preferably with reasonable shipping to Australia).

    Hello,
Are there still available links to download vbios to 7970m?
Next week i think ill have 7970m in my hands, and i wanted to put it into 683dxr instead of 570m - a bit more performance in my notebook would be sweet. I know about modding heatsink, etc., just cant find working vbios links :/
