    Yow, with $40 shipping. Well, I guess $500 isn't too bad for a 6970m.

My idle temps for the 6970m is about 48c. But idle temps are irrelevant! The only problem I was having was heat and not sound from hdmi. Get the Clevo card and then flash it with the Dell bios and the sound will work. As for heat I have tried everything (repaste, pads, ramsinks, holes under fan and holes under gpu). Get 0.5mm pads as the 1mm are too thick. I might even try a pad on the gpu itself.

Yup, price is a little steep but im guessing this would be the next best thing for upgrading performance besides buying a brand new laptop( not that the 5870 is bad but you know how it is always wanting more power) this upgrade would be good for a couple of years until something new catches your eye.
I will admit the newer MSI's look great with the backlit keyboard but I'm not sure how much better the 560M GTX is over the 5870( or if at all).
    The 6970 will crush both.
I do want a SANDY BRIDGE CPU but for gaming my 840QM should have no problems handeling any games, i just wish i could OC the thing besides just using TDE.
Oh yea whats up FORGE :D it's ben a while.

The 560m is just about neck-and-neck with the 5870m. The 5870 probably edges out the nVidia card in most games. If we get confirmation that the 6970 works in a new 17-inch laptop, I might seriously consider it.

And nothing much, Kratos dude. How you been?

    Great job :)
Can you post GPU temps and do you need to keep TURBO mode on to keep things cool when gaming?
When not gaming is the fan on all the time and what are temps when not gaming?
Did you need to mod the heatsink or was it a straight swap?
What drivers did you download and were they easy to install?
i need all the info i can get when my new GPU comes in.
    Thanks

And it's not guaranteed that you can actually use more power just because you use a higher rated PSU. I really doubt you'll be able to use 240W with the 240W adapter.

Is allways good to have a little more power on the psu when make upgrades to a laptop, we all know that makers makes psu just for what the machine needs, they dont think in upgrades just in save every $, I post the link were i purchase the psu upstairs, 100$ for a 240w psu i think is fine.

    laptop psu: 100$
Mod to make the psu fit my laptop: 1h
Know that i never gonna have power consumption problems: priceless :D

You didn't get my point... The power which your system can draw is most probably limited by the BIOS / mobo. You can't expect that you can use up to 240W just because you have a 240W PSU.

ohh sorry now i get your point, well, i never heard of a bios/mobo limiting the power of a machine, yes in the case of the battery charge in laptops, normally the mobo draw power what the components need, well thats what i know

Well after looking for something to lower the 6970 temps, because is not normal for a card to go fron 40c iddle temp to 88c on bench, i disassemble again the card and right after taking off the thermal pads i look that my pads wasnt making a good contact to the memories/transistors so i go to a shop and buy some thermalpad to make then a little bit higher and see if that can help the card, my results were just amazing, icd7 on the core

i play crysis2 for 2 hours yesterday (patch 1.9+dx11+HDTextures) my temps NEVER were up from 60c!!!!!!!! (turbofan on of course), after that play world of warcraft for another 3 hours (firelands raid 25man) and they never go further than 53c!!! i dont have words to tell you guys how happy i am right now, hope the pictures can help some1, i just apply the pads over all the transsistors and the cooler before assemble again the machine, just a little bit higher than the normal pads, well i will try some furmark and 3dmark tests today, my wife allmost kills me yersterday because i wasnt making company to her :p

What's next? a killer CPU upgrade to finally have a superb machine? :p

Man I wish I had the money to upgrade my machine like that. I need to start saving.

I hear you, Ry. If I can scrape up the money, I can hold off on getting a new laptop altogether. 920xm or 840qm plus a 6970m plus 12GB RAM plus a new SSD and a new HDD? Brand new machine.

Hey there guys, been reading around the MSI forums lately, and i've decided to go procure myself a GX660 (m17x, may you RIP.) . (i'ma flash it to the "R" bios for raid. :D ) Now, it seems that the 6970m works fine with the pm55 chipset you guys have (first gen i7/i5's). Now i'm curious if it'l work with the HM65 version. (the ones sold locally in my country are either of the two chipsets, first gen and the sandy bridge's. )

    Here's the specs according to the shop. SI GX660 (Sandy Bridge i5-2410) ----------------------------> i5-2410 / 8Gb / 640Gb / ATI HD 5870 !!!
    Intel® Core™ i5 Sandy Bridge Gaming Notebook
    Core™ i5 2410 / 2.30GHz to 2.90GHz Processor (new upgraded CPU !!!)
    Intel® HM65 Chipset
    8.0Gb DDR3 / 640Gb SATA HDD (entry memory !!!)
    15.6in. FHD 1366*768[/b] TFT-LCD Display (LED Backlight)
    ATI Radeon™ HD 5870* 1Gb GDDR5 VRAM
    2x Theater Class Speakers+1pc. Subwoofer
    Dynaudio Premium Sound ...
    Super-Multi
    802.11n
    USB 3.0
    BT 2.1
    HDMI
    eSATA
    HD Webcam
    XD/SD/MMC/MS card readers

I was thinking which would be a better buy as well, this or the pm55 version with the i5-480m.

    Thanks a lot! :)

For me it would depend on the price difference, but saying that if you bought the model with the Sandy Bridge CPU you would not have to upgrade the CPU like you do with the i5-480m. Not that it's a bad CPU but at least a i7 quad would be a much better match.

Great job on lowering your temps :)
I'm swapping out my GPU soon too can you possibly post what size pads you used to lower temps?
If possible a close up pic as to what exactly you covered would help a lot.

Put it this way, if it works with a 5870M the 6970M should work also.
But theres always a small chance it might not but that choice is yours on if you think it's worth it.

    That's unfortunately not true.

But looking at the other MSI models which are capable of running with the 6970m it seems that the MXM-standard got implemented pretty well, so I really assume it will work with the SB model too.

But you can't say this for sure until somebody tried it.

Aye, I agree. Anybody got a sandy bridge variant here socketed with a 6970m yet? Another question. Will the psu/mobo be able to handle the power draw of both the 6970m and a 920xm (oc'd ? /stock ?) Thanks.

BTW bro, i noticed you drilled new holes into your heatsink? If so, mind telling me how exactly did you mount the 6970m into the 660's chassis? It would be really REALLY appreciated. :)

I'm also thinking of jumping the gun and try the hm65 chipset, and if it would work with a 6970m. Sandybridge plus that, would just be DAMN. :D

But really, no blokes out there who tried it yet? :D

Ive been talking with mxm upgrade about replacing the 560m in my gt683r with a hd6970m, but there's a few questions I need cleared up before jumping the gun and buying one. The gx660r in this thread and the gt683r look to have identical chassis and cooling system, does this mean the heatsinks are the same or are they specific to the gpu installed. Also would going from a nvidia gpu to a amd gpu cause any issues (bios etc.) Any help is appreciated.

Definitely not, the 6970m is way superior to the 560m, the 560m is only a slightly overclocked 460m, and the 6970m scores about the same at stock clocks as a SLI 460m setup.
