Did you activate it with the touch sensitive button above the keyboard? It's de-activated by default.

I got stuck on the same thing, it is just that its deactivated. I'm actually glad they didn't put any software on for it, one less thing trying to start up with windows!

I haven't opened up my laptop yet, but apparently the Advent has 4 memory bays of up to 2Gb in each. It can also take ddr3 1066MHz. Anyone know if this is true?

Sorry bud but all the info is fake.

It can only hold ddr2 and it has two banks, each can support 4 gb sticks for a total of 8.

Has anyone been able to add scrolling function to the touch pad, or is it not possible?

There is a driver that will do that but I can't remember what it is. On my old laptop I added scroll function and found it quite annoying sometimes. Now I use a cordless scroll mouse which is better in every way.

Should be the same hardware that is in the GT725. You might find a driver on the MSI site.

Out of curiousity has anyone played SupCom (supreme commander) on this machine ? I`m kinda tempted but not sure how well it`d run.

I have a copy lying around here. I can install it and try it for you. I'm sure it will run fine though, I've had it running newer and far more demanding games without complaint.

/edit: O.k, tried it and it runs flawlessly at max settings.

True, runs pretty much anything maxed out on native res.

I remember the early days of 3D cards, when every big new game seemed to require a new graphics card lol. When quake 2 came out I was well prepared with an original voodoo 2 sli configuration :) It cost be a months wages at the time but hey...

Now it seems that comparitively old and weak cards like the HD 4850 are in fact still more than good enough. The top end cards are actually 2-3 times more powerful than the software available demands. You can get PS3 level performance from a sub £100 graphics card these days on a desktop.

By installing the "Sentelic finger-sensing Pad" drivers, I've managed to get scrolling of a sort working. You can press the top right of the touchpad to scroll up and bottom right to scroll down. I don't like it as much as the Synaptics finger-drag style, but it's better than nothing.

I found the info in a forum: http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=132985.0

Direct link to the driver here: http://www.mediafire.com/?ujwnyzihykc

seems like everyones got some issues here so i'll crack away at them the best i can, in regards to the issues with the audio its just the generic realtek hd audio driver, you can grab em from the realtek website, dont bother with most of msi's drivers they are out of date... realteks site is kinda strange but its on there. this is as far as i can get you in chrome, realtek doesnt like it for some reason, but that tool is there and will give you the correcct up to date drivers

for the audio problem, its because the realtek manager isnt neccesarily plug and go, you need to open up the hd audio manager included in the realtek suite, should be a red speaker, and then goto advanced settings and click the raido to tie up internal when external is being used. that should fix the problem. even now theres a bit of a lag on my machine, but it doesnt bother me considering the amazing audio options in this laptop. the first time it pops up or even when the bubble shows in the tray saying you've plugged something in click that and itll take to to a small menu asking what type of jack you have plugged in, then select the correct one. that should solve the issue of the headphone jack not working. also make sure you use the closest or second closest to the mini firewire jack as those are for primary L/R and headphone out.

Also the closest jack is for optical out which brings me to the next point, 5.1 is pretty sexy on this laptop, and it can even support 7.1 according to vista and my reciever. 5.1 is dolby digital which is amazing, the same for 7.1, sounds really really nice. configuring it is somewhat annoying but once again in the sound control panel, you can enable DD in the settings for the optical.

HDMI audio is 5.1 also and is so so, i wouldnt buy a cable just for audio, when optical is much cheaper, just remember you need a cable with the 3.5mm TOSlink adapter, or you need to get one on ebay for about a pound or $1.50
whatever currency you use. also for those of us with ghetto sound systems or who are just that cheap, you can use all four of the jacks for analouge surround, the realtek menu will explain which each jack is used for but it should take all four jacks.

as for the scrolling issue, win7 enables it by default, its just close to the right edge of the pad.

and with the gold tv tuner jack, yes this laptop supports tv tuners, it has a dedicated internal pci express slot for a tv tuner card, located in the left back corner right next to the fan.

it also has a THIRD slot underneath the touchpad where you can install a turbomemory or flashcache card as i call them, you may also be able to use a ssd card there as they are the same exact thing. this laptop also should work with other pci-e cards like the 3g mobile internet cards. though they are expensive, the cheapest dealer ive seen is $180us for an unlocked one.

    Very helpful post there Auto!

But yeah the main drivers you will want to really be updating are GPU-ATI HD Audio and Realtek, heck, from pcworld, i had to update all my drivers :p

Good thing is you can use both the closest audio ports to the firewire port at the same time! you also have bitrate quality control from realtek audio HD, and you have some very...Very good equalisers in my opinion in realtek.

The sound card should also be dolby certified, so you can also right click your speakers (as sound device) and there should be a dolby tab, from here you can do some extra enhancements to bass or headphones, theres even a surround speaker mode that trys pushing the sound around your head a bit more.

Bad news it seems Advent 7555 GX laptops are outof stock. There is a high chance DSG will not replanish their stock of 7555 GX.

I don't think the price will go any lower (though it was like a month ago) .. stick with the 7555. check this deal http://www.gumtree.com/london/88/51501488.html , always a risk in buying off gumtree .. do you really want a refurbished notebook for 800£?

Well technically it's not brand new , had previous owner , probably been damaged (whether minor or major we don't know) , obviously been repaired hence the refurbished tag ,.. why every website from pcworld , currys , dixon all selling it refurbished ? that's weird . anyway phone them up and find out what was wrong with it before buying

Fortunately i have the first model release with the blueray drive, its not tested but the DVD side of it works fine.

The model number is HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW CT10N, not sure if that helps but it most likely is definately compatible.

Today I was in pc world, saw there the advent 8555 GX and took some pictures. They cannot tell me if the design is different between the 8555 and 7555. Is it the same ? around display it is silver-white and keybord is black some letters are orange.. then the bottom is black (the line with touch pad) and out side it is black.
I have taken some pictures take a look how looks the 8555 in store..(sry for bad quality just mobile)

I don't have an advent , i have the MSI GT725 which is exactly same as your pic but instead of the grey , it's red .. same design , keyboard etc (see crappy pic)
The only thing the msi has over the advent is the bluray , turbo botton and eco , bigger HDD.

Vista is like my attached pic .....(do i need to say more ? :p) i think you will get a w7 coupon or something for free upgrade

PC world website always messes me about, I get on better with curry's. Same site but they seam better at updating stock etc.

It may be easier to simply call the sales line and tell them the problem with the website. that way they will let you use the discount code over the phone, and help you track down the 7555gx. they are pretty thin on the ground now.
