After I installed all the MSi apps and drivers, I tried their auto-update utility (I forget what it was called, but I think it began with an 'L' and ended in the number 5).
It didn't see any of the drivers I manually installed myself, but once I used it to install drivers, they would show up as what version is currently installed, and what versin is available, which is cool, and a lot easier than finding each installed executable and looking at its properties to find the version number.
Then, I updated that auto-update utility itself (from 5.0064 to 5.0066), and it threw away all the detections it previously had, which is annoying.
So only new downloads installed through that utility will show up starting from scratch again, until I update the utility again.
Oh well, its at least easier than doing it all manually, and maybe future versions won't lose the installed version numbers. I just mention this because you might want to hold off updating that auto-update utility itself for a while longer, because you'll lose the installed version numbers when you do.
-
I recall that I did need to install *two* bluetooth drivers from the MSi site, and mine just worked after that. I didn't know what the difference was, but I just installed them both.
So glad yours is working now! -
Just found out that the ODD bay is a slim drive. Xotic PC just sent me this note:
So the questions are can you find a slim ODD bay and a slim HDD?
MSI does not make any optional ODD bays per an email exchange I had with them. -
Then why does the BIOS have RAID? I read somewhere (mind you, it was after a Google translation) that it was theoretically possible to have three SSD drives present in these boxes. One was in the normal drive bay, the second was in the ODD bay, and the third was where the broadband NIC goes.
And I thought SSD drives came in some of the same sizes as magnetic HDD's (like 9.5 mm).
It just sounds like we're missing something. I believe there were different configurations for the X460DX available in the Asia/Pacific region. I wonder if an Australian reseller might have a special caddy that the North American market cannot order? I wouldn't mind throwing a second HDD in the ODD bay some day (probably not so far away, either). Thanks for the status update. -
Some models do come configured with HDD's in place of the ODD's.
Search around the nets, the answer is there!
-
I am a korean and I searched x460dx on korean website prior to order my x460dx. In korea, they get no ODD but 750gb hdd is installed in the cd drive and they can add SSD to the main motherboard very easily. I am pretty sure there will be a right caddy for x460dx. I installed my ssd long time ago, but just can't find which caddy to buy to install 500gb hdd
-
Here's what MSI told me:
I've been searching the nets all day. If you have a link, please post here. -
Just took out an odd to measure the actual dimension. The dimensions were 127mm*127mm*9.5mm which means odd caddy should be 9.5mm height. I also got the same answer from xotic that the caddy will be slim line but I do not get what slim line would mean. I am going to purchase a universal 9.5mm caddy and will post if it fits or not.
-
I got the refund without a problem.
Yea. It's a very odd problem. As I'm using it the bottom right corner of the lcd gets brighter and brighter until you can hardly see what's there. My guess is it got hit hard in shipping thanks to the ty MSI and Newegg packaging. I'm gonna keep looking around. Possibly even buy it again from somewhere else. It's really the only reasonably priced laptop of its kind out there. -
I got mine from bhphotovideo, for an awesome price of $775
The packaging was awesome too! All the way from New York to California.
-
You mean Bhphotovideo?
-
Looking forward to the result.
Xotic said their engineer tried to put in a standard drive into the space but that it didn't fit.
EDIT:
Does an SD card fit all the way in the slot when inserted? In other words, is it flush with the chassis, such that you could leave an SD card in the slot without it breaking off? -

We have the 9.5mm caddy, but the faceplate is not interchangeable so you would have to use just the flat faceplate that would not match your MSI X460DX.
We are working on a solution so that we can mount the MSI X460DX faceplate, but we do not expect to have it available for a month or so. -
Yes, that
-
Cool. Is everything great so far with your x460dx?
-
Does the stock HDD fit in the caddy?
Does the caddy stick out or get in the way with the stock faceplate? -
Yup. No issues so far!
-
So.. I'm going to try and exchange my Amazon-bought MSI x460dx for another one which hopefully won't have an annoying dead pixel. Wish me luck. :|
-
Good Luck!
We're rootin' for ya!
Maybe include some special instructions when you place your order that they use some padding material! I think NewEgg thought my padding was another sold item to be bundled into the box, and not necesssarily something that should go around the item. And maybe that they should use more than one piece of padding.
Anyway, mine arrived intact despite almost no protection, but not everyone has been so lucky! -
Another favourable review!
The only major downsides are the liberal use of glossy plastic (I agree) and the typical small notebook quality speakers (sort of agree again) and the screen's resolution (not image quality). The image quality is OK IMHO, and yes I would love a higher res screen, but come on - since when do you subtract points for a thin & light not having 1600x900?
notebookreview.com's review of the MSi X460DX
It also pointed out something I never noticed before: you can press BOTH the trackpad buttons at once. It's true: it works!
It also pointed out something that never occurred to me: the matte key surfaces may go glossy over time as they wear down. Sad.
But this is yet another good review. Colpolite will be pleased to hear that in their opinion, the keyboard and the trackpad buttons are quiet, and the heat and fan noise, while warm and noticeable, are not distracting. I also agree completely, and even moreso if you run atop a cooling pad. I find that the viewing angles from side to side are not quite as good as in their tests.
To summarize - it's a shorter review than the Techspot UK review, but more consistently accurate. Good work folks. -
Hey peeps, what's the best online store to get this at w/ stock configuration?
Newegg, buy, jr, bhphoto or xotic? -
I don't know if this has already been posted or not -- this thread has grown exponentially since the last time I checked it
However, it appears that XoticPC is now offering the DX model configurable with i7 Quad Core CPUs if anyone was interested - I know I would have been, but right now I'm rather happy with my Latitude E6420. With that said, Quad Core 14" with NVidia graphics seems to be a rarity right now, so I'm sure somebody will be interested.
MSI X460DX -
Newegg had the DX-006 with a $40 rebate recently. $809.99 shipped.
I don't personally trust MSI rebates, but the chance is better than nothing, and Newegg is reputable. -
Last I heard from Xotic, they were having trouble with the 2nd HDD in the ODD bay. You'll want to double check with them.
-
Does anybody know how to enable the wifi to automatically turn on?
I find it annoying to have to manually do it every time my x460dx boots! Please let me know! Thanks! -
Weird, mine is on automagically. Press the Fn + wifi key on one of the F Keys. Don't have my laptop with me so I don't know which F key it is. Either that or go onto the S-Bar app and do it from there. Then try restarting.
-
That's how to turn the Wifi on and off, but when I boot up it doesn't turn on automatically! It's got to be some kind of power saving feature, but even when the laptop is plugged in the Wifi doesn't turn on...
thanks for the fast reply. -
Hmm...have you checked your power options? Right-click the battery on the bottom right and choose "more power options" or something like that, and it should give you a list. See if choosing anything different like Balanced, or High Performance gives you anything.
-
When I use hibernate, it always returns to the same state when it comes back on (same with the camera). I only do shutdowns when I install something or about once a week, so I can't recall if that changes the activity state for a full reboot or not.
However, I also installed all my drivers from scratch, so that might make a difference, but my first action would be in agreement with manifest3r, and to check the power settings and the 'Eco' bar.
BTW, that 'Eco bar' seems retarded to me: it looks like it just lets you toggle the brightness and WiFi and camera from a central place in the software, instead of physically toggling with the Fn keys? You still have to pick one thing at a time in the software, so how much time does that save the user (and memory and clock cycles to run as a TSR?). Is there *any* additional benefit to that 'eco bar'. -

MSI has taken the position that they will absolutely not honor the warranty if an i7 Quad Core processor has been installed in the MSI X460DX. -
An i7 Quad-Core with a 540m is just asking for some trouble. It's gonna burn your house down!
-
And possibly sterilize you...
So, bumping my q's
Does the generic caddy look weird with the notebook without the MSI face? (aren't they both black?)
Does an SD card fit all the way into the SD slot, so that it's flush with the chassis? -
it worked for a little bit and then the issue came back up again. *sigh, I guess I'll have to keep looking
-
loved the computer, but keyboard issues + 1 dead gray pixel. Returning it tomorrow....
-
What keyboard issue did you have?
-
The SD card sticks out appx 2mm (guesstimate)
-
Thank you, repped. Looks like it would be OK to leave it in all the time.
-
Do you guys know if there is a way to shut off the LED backlight or just the display of the MSI x460dx without having to wait for the timer on my power settings?
I was able to shut off just the backlight of my Asus ul30vt so the display was pretty much off so it was handy when doing time consuming tasks like encoding videos.
Thanks! -
What I do is that I go into Power Settings and change the "What happens when I close my lid?" value to "Do Nothing", and "How long until my computer goes to sleep", I put "Never".
That way I just close the lid, and not worry about it turning off or going to sleep, plus the backlight is completely off
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
If you close the lid on a running laptop you risk overheating because it does like to breath through the keyboard. It would be better to just close it enough to turn the back light off, thus leaving about an inch of airspace at the front.
-
D: I did not know that. Thanks!
-
Just unboxed my X460DX. I like it so far, and there don't seem to be any dead pixels, so were good there.
First, I'm going to do a clean install of windows ultimate, and maybe the dev preview of Windows 8.
Is there anything specific anyone wants to see?
EDIT: UPDATE
So I turned the brightness up on the screen all the way and noticed a... distortion. It looked like a dead pixel at first, but it's an actual imperfection in the screen. I ran my finger over the area, and there's a bump there. Anyone else experience this? -
No! Say it ain't so. Mine doesn't seem to (just checked again after reading your post). Its not something stuck to the screen, is it? Had that before.
-
No, it's not something stuck to the screen. It looks like something cut or poked the screen and made a divot or cut. There were other spots on the screen (like dried liquid). I think someone got the laptop and tried to massage the dead pixel to life, damaging the screen. Then they returned it, and I was the unlucky recipient.
It doesn't really bother me when all is said and done. I can't wait around for an exchange - I need the machine for school.
I did swap out the HDD with my Crucial M4 128 GB. It came with a WD Scorpio Black HDD - not bad. Now I need to find a slim ODD/HDD caddy to add in the HDD again. The SSD will have to do for now.
BTW, cold boot to desktop is just over 10 seconds.
EDIT: Does anyone have a service manual for this machine? removing the ODD isn't straightforward. -
Service manual would be a great find, I agree. If I find one, I will post a link or a share.
I can't even imagine seeing a 10-second full boot.
I don't have experience with the 'return assessment' period: if it was quick, it might be worth struggling for a week or so to get it fixed. Dead pixels aren't covered by MSi unless you have 4+ for their 14" display policy, although 'divots' might surely warrant a change. If you got the extended warranty, then after the first year warranted by MSi, then the NewEgg warranty resumes, which allows repair for as little as 1 defective pixel. -
Removing the ODD is pretty straightforward.
Just take out the screws on the back just like you did when you installed your ssd. And when you take out the tray, you will see one screw which is located above the ODD. Just take out that screw and you can simply push out the ODD -
What online store did you purchased the laptop from? -
So I shopped around a bit and it seems the x460dx is the only laptop that matches what I want at a decent price. I'm going to give a replacement just one more shot and hope for the best.
-
Newegg, though I dont think they'll take it back now that I installed my SSD and broke the warranty sticker.
BTW the 10 second boot is windows 7 with nothing else installed. I imagine that will slow down as I install more programs. -
Anyone actually able to mount a drive in place of the odd? I know there were a few here trying to accomplish it.
Any news on the x460?
