MSI GE60/GE70 Apache with nVidia GTX860M Review Benchmarks Unboxing

Also it should be noted, though the temps were a bit warm for the GE60 (Maxwell 860M), Ken significantly reduced temps (8 to 10 degrees C) by re-pasting with ICD. The larger GE70 temps were not bad in this video, but ICD will most likely improve these temps, as well.

As i've read everywhere the GE70 apache pro's HDD is running at 7200 rpm.

    Where can I confirm it?

You can read my review here. As for the HDD it is 7200rpm with 1TB for the 2PE that is being sold in Spain. I recommend you to install a mSata for the OS and programs. It's only 100 euro for 240GB (Crucial M500) and it'll make your laptop snappier. As for the screen of the GE70, it is TN but gives great IQ and has better response time than IPS. If you want the laptop for gaming you shouldn't worry too much.

    Thanks.

But the GE60's screen is TN too, is it? The same tech of the GE70's, I mean.

I'm asking this because of the new spec they are advertising about the optimized viewing angles for the GE60 2PE.

I'm not 100% sure of what type MSI mounts on the GEs and they can use any catchy marketing name for it but it's definitely not IPS. It looks great though and I believe it's TN for the previous reviews I read. This is true on the GE60 and 70. The only IPS screen I know of from MSI is the GT60 Domintor Pro 3K edition with a resolution of 2880 x 1620.

Yes it's a nicer tn panel which can have pretty decent horizontal viewing angles (just not vertical).

A high quality TN Panel on these apache ge60 right? I wonder if it's a clear screen or it suffers from grainy/sparkly look because of poor application of the anti glare coating. Any data on the SRGB coverage or color gamut percentage and contrast ratio and black level cdm on the default display?

Btw how good or stable is the intel 3160 ac that are included by default on the ge60? Is it better or same as 7260 AC?

At Xotic PC I've noticed that they offer 'Thermal Compound', and 'Copper Cooling'...Has anyone here have had either, and if they really do help reducing the temps?

Check out these images from the GE60 apache pro screen.

They are from a spanish forum, where they ensure this model has some IPS or similar tech beause of its viewing angels and its excellent colours.

The display on that ge60 pics you posted looks high quality with real whites background and IPS like viewing angles. Can gentechpc or xoticpc verify this? Is it also possible the owner of that laptop replaced it with a different display?

No official owner's lounge thread for new GE60 or GE70 yet? Looks like they're available on NewEgg and Amazon, so I imagine some folks must have them here.

I'd say that depends on his expectations. In 3 years the 860M might need to turn games down to their medium (or mix of med-high) settings, but the end result may still be something that looks similar to the console versions of those games, which may be something he's ok with.

I personally don't think gaming laptops are a great choice if you're always striving to have maxed out graphics (with a playable FPS), as a gaming desktop is just so much better with that with its upgradability. I mean in 3 years, I don't even know how much better the performance will be out of a 870M laptop, as that will be an outdated card by that time as well (not to mention the better CPU's that will be out then as well).

    Hey Guys/Gals,

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the GE60/GE70 Apache Pro. Can you owners please do me a favor and check for keyboard ghosting on these 3 key combinations if you can?

    1.) W+E+Spacebar
    2.) Q+W+Spacebar
    3.) Q+W+D

I was wondering if you can test those 3 key combinations for me because it is crucial for those 3 key combinations to work. All 3 key combinations should light up green for it not to have ghosting.

Can you pls check with this software link below

Did some investigating in regards to the panel of the ge60 and ge70 apache. It seems that the ge60 apache has that new technology on its panel with very wide viewing angles both vertical and horizontal which explains it's IPS like quality.

One thing I also found out is that the ge70 apache unfortunately is not using that same new wide angle technology and it only uses a regular TN panel. People are complaining over at Spain tech forums because the ge70 apache display looks different and color shifts when viewing side to side or vertically.

Now we just need Xoticpc or GentechPC to verify this since Gentechpc had the ge60 and ge70 apache side by side in a video review. :)

I'm not complaining at all and I haven't seeing anyone complaining at the Spanish forum about the GE70 panel. Color shifting? Quite the opposite. I think the screen on my GE70 looks great. Can't compare it with the one from the GE60 as I don't have it. You can just take a look at the video from GenTechPC. Is hard to tell the difference from just looking at the video but as you said, maybe they can come up with a right answer. The GE60 screen might look better? Maybe but I doubt it's an IPS panel or MSI would have advertise it as one.

One member at the Spanish forum got an answer from the tech service when asking about GE60 and GE70 screen type.

    vu9ygy6e.jpg

According to them, " both notebooks have the exact same screen, a normal FHD-antiglare panel. MSI does not have machines with IPS screens". That's not entirely true as the GT60 Domintor Pro 3K edition has IPS but maybe that model didn't arrive to Spain yet.

As for your investigations, could you elaborate? New technology despite the impressive marketing name companies try to come up with, sometimes means just a different screen protection coating, nothing more, giving better viewing angle or less grainy picture. This might be the case with the GE60.

Hey Colpolite, tried the link with your combinations and all 3 turn the keys green. I could go up to 8 keys pressed at once. After that no more keys would be registered. Hope that helps. The Steelseries keyboard is pretty nice.

I'd say that is model release date.

Actually I checked it in my 2013's GE60 and its manufacture date was the almost same. I found out that the screen's manufacturer was Lenovo as it was launched in 2011.

I bought the GT60 dominator 424. The internal microphone is terrible. You can't hear anything when recording and when you turn up the boost it gets extremely staticy. I even bought an external microphone and plugged it into the microphone jack and iit has the same issue.

I will be calling MSI but does anyone have any idea if this is fixable?

Unless they worked some magic, the 870M should be at least 80W, So yeah it should be waaaaay hotter.

I'm firmly in the camp, who expects the 870M to quickly overheat in such a thin chassis. I'd like to be proven wrong though.

You'll likely going to be proven wrong because the GS60 has dual cooling fans 1 for gpu and 1 for cpu and the same situation with Razer 14. Now if you put that 870m on the GE series, then it's almost guaranteed you can cook your eggs on it fried and golden brown in just minutes.

Unfortunately, there is much more to a cooling solution, than the number of fans. I have seen designs where a single fan is wholly adequate. Heat-pipe, heat-sink, and ventilation design, the fan's CFM, and even TIM application, all come into play here..... and if this were not challenging enough in notebook design, there are reasonable noise levels to consider. Sometimes, 'Mo-Power' is not a good thing, nor practical. In the case of the GS60, I am in Kevin's camp here, and I think recent testing clearly shows the 870M is a bit warm for this notebook. Remember, the emphasis on this notebook is a lightweight, compact, thin, and sleek design, yet powerful enough for most any application...... but I would not consider this the notebook of choice, if my primary focus were gaming. Even with the 860M, this notebook WILL game well, and I think it will make a great companion for students and travelers, alike..... but for the design, it will be warm, and I predict dust (producing much higher future temps), accompanied with frequent cleanings, will also be problematic for some.

(Ken is kind enough to provide these videos, because he wants happy customers, knowing precisely what they are getting into.)

I have been googling and this Samsung panel is equal to LG's IPS screen.

So, the GE60 2PE has something similar to IPS tech.

    @Tiner

The display on the Ge60 Apache from your screenshot is 156HL01-102 and that's the Samsung PLS then. PLS technology is the same as IPS of Hitachi/LG, or AHVA of AUO. Looking at the pics you posted from another forums where they showed screenshots of the GE60 Apache, I knew it was some type of IPS/PLS/AHVA technology since the viewing angles and the whites are perfect with no distortion at any angle.

So now we know that the GE60 Apache Pro uses a PLS display and the GE70 Pro uses a Chi Mei TN panel. So consider yourself lucky because that's a PLS Samsung screen you got Tiner. I also thought about grabbing the MSI GE60 Apache but changed my mind and opted for the Asus N550JK with a slower ddr3 Maxwell GTX 850m since I really didn't need that much power from the gtx 860m.

Still the GE70 Apache Pro at $1,099 with the i5 is a great deal for anyone looking for a desktop replacement with strong 1080p gaming capability w/ its gtx 860m Maxwell even if it's not an IPS like display ( the tn panel on it is still of great quality). But for people looking for that IPS/PLS/AHVA panel and more portability, the extra $150 for the GE60 Apache Pro is a great deal.

Yes the retail 15.6" models are now using the same displays which are awesome. They are all using 30 pin eDP cables too obviously.

This makes the under $1400 GT60 424 amazing value.

Wow, the GTX 860m scores almost 6000 GPU points in 3dmark11 with some overclocking. And don't forget that there are no oficial drivers yet for this GPU.

But with these clocks the videocard easily reaches 85 degrees (while gaming, fully stressed). I find this temperature range dangerous. What do you think?

I'm just trying to figure out how fast can run this maxwell gtx 860m.

Throttle is 92C I believe which is still not really dangerous.

    Hi,

I've been experiencing issues with the integrated microphone and its driver.

With the realtek driver it shuts itself down when I'm using it with chrome or IE.

Without it is always on, so it's drivers fault.

Do you guys know what could be happening? How can I clear everything from realtek so I can do a clean install of the driver?

    Thanks!
