Hi everyone, newbie here. I've just taken the plunge and bought the MSI GE70 051 2PE Apache Pro for £1299.

    MSI GE70 Apache Pro,
    Intel® Core™ i7-4700HQ Quad Core Processor,
    17.3" Full HD Screen,
    Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit,
    16GB DDR3 RAM,
    2x 128GB SSD + 1000GB HDD,
    DVD Rewriter,
    Dedicated GTX 860M 2GB Graphics,
    USB3 | Bluetooth | HDMI, Backlit Keyboard

    MSI GE70, GE70 2PE-051UK, MSI GE70 Apache Pro

I am nowhere near as technically minded (gifted) as many on here but this package seemed great for the price. I was previously waiting on an XPS15 which I ordered. However, I cancelled my order this morning because of the PS CC scaling issue on HiDPI screens plus the £300 saving.

Any thoughts on my new system would be greatly appreciated :)

3.5 hours was about the length of life the original gs70 had while wifi browsing. I would hope that the smaller screen would let the laptop squeeze out a higher battery time. How large is the battery of the gs60 and the gs70 to be exact?

Here is a translated review of MSI GS60

    Google Translate

6 hours battery life, but they are saying temperatures reach pass 40 degrees Celsius.... over 100 degrees! What's up with MSI and the temperature problems?

Huh? 40-42 C is really not bad, and all things considered (the tech, and super thin chassis), MSI has done a pretty nice job with the GS60. I am actually surprised the temps are as good as they are. Did you watch Ken's GS60 video review ( HERE)?

Am I correct in that the only difference between the GT60 424 and 423 is the extra 4gb on with the 423 model? I can't seem to find anything else different between them..

It would be rather warm if the places you put your hands were reaching 42c.. Maybe.. Even that isn't super awful, only annoying.

With stock configuration, under Unigine test, the temperature stayed at around 72 C or 158 F in the living room without air conditioning.
    Performance exceeded GS70.

I was going to buy the GS60 but Im hesitant when everyone is screaming about the Maxwell vs Kepler thing.

Can someone explain to me why Kepler is such a disaster? I want a slim portable gaming computer, but judging by this thread Kepler = end of the world.

Kepler is nowhere near the end of the world, this laptop is still pretty great but most people would like Maxwell mainly because it has a lower tdp which in theory translates to longer battery life and less heat. Between the two versions of gtx860 the only difference seems to be about 30 points more for the Maxwell edition in 3dmark 11 but, from what I understand there could be other things that affect the score. I'm getting this information from the reviews from the p34g v2 and the gs60 so there isn't much information to go on so far, maybe someone with a bit more knowledge can use the information better. The p34g v2 had about 5 hours of runtime and gs60 had about 6 hours but it's unknown if the same tests where used for both.

We made a video review of the GT70 DomintorPro-1039, working on editing it and hopefully will get it on Youtube soon. With all the new models just being released we've got a lot of updating to do.

LOL, you have to remember that a lot of folks here are looking for the 'Latest-Greatest' tech (Maxwell), and if it's available, they expect manufacturers to deliver the benefits this brings. It's the o'l adage, 'OUT with the old, and IN with the new'. It stands to reason, that some would be a little disappointed when Kepler was delivered, and Maxwell was expected...... especially when it's a new notebook model, with such desirable, slim and sexy lines. Thus far, what I am seeing of the GS60 looks pretty good. The Kepler 860M GPU performance is on par with it's Maxwell 860M counterpart, the temps look very good, and performance benchmarks show it's significantly improved over the previous 760M. Again, all things considered, it looks like MSI has done a fine job with the GS60.

Personally, I will be waiting for MSI's next 17" gaming flagship (hopefully with 20nm Maxwell GM2xx), but I do find the GS60 very appealing. I'd say, if the GS60 meets your requirements, ignore the GPU controversy, GO FOR IT, and ENJOY!

    :)

    Hi
I'm looking for a good and portable gaming notebook. Right now I'm considering the MSI GS60 or the Lenovo Y50. Does anybody know if the GTX 860M in the lenovo Maxwell or Kepler ?
Also, how powerful is the GTX 860M ? Will it get me through the next three years ? And in which settings ?
I'm considering either the MSI or the Lenovo with 1080p screen and 512gb SSD. What do you think ?
    Thanks :D

I'd say no, it just beats 770M and loses to 680M - so even the current games might need settings turned down a little; 3 years no way!

    Hi

I have decided to make the switch from desktop to gaming laptop, i feel like it is definitely the most practical choice as a university student.

I am thinking about buying the MSI GT70 dominator pro, specifically, 880m 4g, intel Core i7-4800MQ, 12 gb ram, 128 gb ssd,1 tb hdd

Now i am not a computer wiz, so i have been looking at a lot of reviews, reading about gaming laptops in general and an issue that seems to often be mentioned with gaming laptops is overheating.

My question is i saw in that review by hutsady above that when running 3dmark the cpu temp maxed at 93 and gpu temp maxed at 88, can i expect to hit these temperatures while gaming? and is it dangerous( for the computer) to keep it that hot for extended periods of time, is it something i should think about while i am gaming?

My next question is how is the reliability with MSI gt70 laptops? how long do they last? I have read mixed answers when searching up on this, so i'd like to ask users.

    Thanks

I'm about to order one of these and I have the exact same questions except the battery usage which I don't really care.

The two things that are holding me back is comments I hear about high temperature and the power supply not being strong enough.

Using an external cooler is not an option for me because I'll be using the notebook in a store and I want as less as possible on the desk.

I'd like someone that's have done excessive use of these notebooks and really knows what he is talking about to clarify those concerns. I have read a lot from users in the forums but mostly speculations from users that have never even seen the notebook up close.

They do. The GS70 supports Super RAID 2, up to 1500MB/s with 3 m.2 SATA SSDs. That's the model I'm waiting for.

The GS60 offers the same technology, but only with 2 SSDs, maxing out at 900MB/s.

I think I read a post earlier in this thread that the GS series' is soldered, and the GT's are MXM.

edit: Nah, it was related to something else. Who knows. I wouldn't expect a slim GS60/GS70 to have an MXM card.

    Hi,

What do you think about the new GE70 Apache / Pro ?
I think for the price it's worth because the new GS70 and GT70 are too expensive for me.

Is that cooling is better than the old Ge70 2013 ?

    Thanks

Does anybody know if the MSI GE70 2PE-033-XES has an IPS screen? And what about its HDD?

I'm asking this because I'm wondering if it's worth it to buy this GE70 model instead of the GE60 one (this seems to have almost the same specs unless it has 4gb of RAM, a smaller HDD and obviously a 15" screen).

They both cost almost the same.

GE70 isn't a high end product which doesn't use IPS at all.
    1TB 5400RPM HDD.
Larger screens equals to slight heavier weight, and lesser battery life.

Can you confirm 5400rpm spec for that model?

On the other hand we have this strange spec

View angle has nothing to do with panel types.
It's better because it's the newer technology.

I'm saying IPS because I've seen that spec in some stores.

And do you think that both GE60 and GE70 have the same screen tech? With those optimized viewing angles, I mean.

I notice on your site that you have the newer GP 70 Leopard as well as the older GP 70 2OD-027 by MSI...Aside from the Windows 7 to 8, a higher screen resolution for the Leopard, and the upgraded gpu - is the Leopard a significant step up?

For me it's probably not a bad idea to spend the extra $$$ for the Leopard, but I honestly don't know enough about either model to say with any certainty.

The 027US is last years model, the Leopard-010 is the new refresh. The upgrades are basically what you've listed with the GPU being the main change. Besides those they are very similar to each other. For the price difference I'd go with the new one.

Ken from gentechpc helped me a lot with my order.

I finally ordered the two notebooks I was looking for. I got the GT70 DOMINATOR PRO 890 for me and the GT70 DOMINATOR 895 as a wedding gift for my best friend.

Unfortunately I won't be receiving these notebooks until the 28th of this month but as soon as I do I'll do some nice testings on them. My mother in law is bringing me the notebooks to Greece.

    @Ken
Thank you for all your help and make sure you test those notebooks extensively. They got a long trip ahead of them
