I am going to ring the US branch tomorrow, to see if they'll at all negotiate with me.

    My terms:

    1. Allow me to trade in toward a GT73VR Titan-017 for $1k.
    2. Physical condition of my laptop is irrelevant
    3. Allow me to provide a credit card #, charge the $1k, and cross ship the GT73VR, with the threat of charging me the remaining balance on the laptop ($1,100) if I don't ship my GT72.
    4. If they meet all of the above, I'm willing to sign an agreement to not pursue further damages.

It's a pipe dream, but I'm gonna give it a shot.

I've already emailed [email protected] a much more detail version of this post. No response as of yet.

Would be nice if they had some sort of cross shipping option as im currently living overseas (military personnel) and having a laptop out for 3+ weeks would feel like a lifetime.

    3400 - New Value
    2580 - Current Value
    ------
    820 - Difference

    Trade-In
    GT80 w/980M SLI = GT83VR Titan Pro w/GTX 1070 SLI
    1400

    Calculations
    3400 - New 2580 - Current
    1400 1400
    ------ ------
    4800 3980
    ----------------------

    Thoughts
4800 is what I paid overall. Laptop is 10 months old. They are replacing a 10 month old laptop with brand new hardware + 1070 SLI. What would I have paid versus no trade-in and the upgrade was as planned? Perhaps I could have received let's say 400 x2 @ 800 for the old 980M's. This would have eaten any extra cost and then some. Cost to me, 600 after all is said and done.

My laptop has lost 820 in value over 10 months.
    1400
    820
    ------
    580

I will be totaling 580 on the trade-in. This number will be exponential on older devices. It seems to me, yes, MSI is having us eat some of the cost, but at what viable alternative? Sell the laptop, you lose. Sue MSI, you will lose, even if you win. Time kills all tech and that's what it will inevitably take.

What will ultimately decide MSI's fate will be if there was proof that they misled consumers, while willingly and knowingly continued to sell products guaranteed to not be upgradeable. That would mean a real bate and switch scheme for profit. Criminal charges would ensue at minimum. All corporations will inevitably have done their calculations on losses, even in this scenario. They scheme a few hundred per customer, invariably lose some to court cases, but still manage profit. I put a scheme such as this past no one corporation large enough.

Although, I tend to not go this route since they intend on remaining number 1 for gaming and in the gaming community nothing hurts worse than a gamer scorned. Just as the devs from No Mans Sky or WoW. Many other games as well. Gamers gang up through social media and companies like MSI are paying overtime to reduce the flack. They seen this coming months ago to be sure.

Look at Samsung and what they have done with the Note 7 debacle. At least they have a 100% return policy to vendors. That strengthened them rather than weakened them even through the billions in losses. (Samsung) - John J. Consumer, "The Note 7 is gonna blow up in my pocket!? That sucks, well at least they have a nice S 7 or S 7 Edge to fall back on". Sales of the S 7 skyrocketted afterwards.

In comparison the sales may not necessarily increase, but their removal of GT7X and GT8X laptops from their inventory will increase. It is hard to say what is the best course, but I'm seriously considering the trade-in even though I have the newer GT80Skylake Model after reviewing the math for myself. Just my two cents. Any opinions are welcome.

P.S. Google is making the search queries for this difficult to ascertain. There is definitely a campaign to quell the dissension of this under way.

And, if MSI followed through with the MXM Pascal Upgrades, we could have kept our trusty reliable problem free laptops.

Without the hassle of migration to a new laptop, migration to new storage, and migration to the new problems of Windows 10.

Yes new laptops have new problems, infant mortality of hardware, and new problems brought about by Windows 10. Instead of continuing with our known hardware, we have to roll the dice again and hope we get good hardware.

The GT72/GT80 laptops with better CPU's are being traded for lessor spec CPU and basic RAM and storage. Our RAM and Storage upgrades viability are in question when migrating to the new laptops.

The MXM GPU only upgrade allows us to continue to enjoy the time and effort we put in to configuraing our current laptops, without starting all over again with a new laptop - reduplicating all that work - one more time - or several times as it usually ends up.

The simple fact that the cost of only upgrading the MXM GPU is offset by selling our very valuable and still very much in demand 970m / 980m / 980 MXM GPU's, making the total upgrade cost only a few hundred dollars instead of a couple thousand for a whole system trade-in.

These trade-in's are no bargain, and are nothing but trouble instead of the joy they could have been with MXM GPU upgrades.

I just got the proposal to exchange my GT80S / 980M SLI / 6820HK / 32GB RAM bought in March 2016 in France.

    GT83 VR - ((Win10 / Skylake i7-6820HK / Dual GTX 1070, GDDR5X 8GB / 16GB DDR IV * 2/4 Super Raid 512GB SSD (NVMe M.2 SSD PCIe Gen3 by x4) + 1TB (SATA) 7200rpm / 18.4 "FHD Anti-Glare (1920 x 1080) IPS-Level) from 1700 to 1900 €

At least 500 € too expensive in my opinion because I do not have the opportunity to get my 980M for resale.

A Tier upgrade NEEDS to be offered. As long as they allow me to go from a 980m SLI to a 1080 SLI then I will be happy.

    Hello everyone,

Please confirm with Carl that is his lawyer before you sign up at Girard Gibbs or you may become locked into a binding agreement with the wrong legal group, which may not be what you want.

    http://www.ripoffreport.com/r/Girar...h-Of-Contract-San-Francisco-California-763355

As this ramps up, we might have some more groups trying to fight over who gets the action. It would benefit MSI to move on this sooner than later, as most of us just want a fair settlement with MSI. I love my MSI GT80 Titan, and I am hoping MSI can come to terms with us.

Each of us can post the responses we get from MSI to this thread, documenting the answers, and I can add them to the 1st post, just like I added MSI's previous communications.

If you want to put together an acceptable document, I can add that to the 1st post too.

So can someone tell my how to PM @snallygaster to add my voice to the crowd?

I'm a highly experienced electronics engineer and PC repair technician. I've performed detailed breakdowns on the in-machine capabilities of the GT72 model range from the 880m all the way through to the new 1070, as well as a good three dozen models from Clevo through Alienware and Asus spanning the 980m and up to 1080.

I can categorically state that from an MXM interface, power draw, screen compatibility, CPU/RAM/Chipset compatibility, and TDP standpoint, the 980m and 1070 are damned near functionally identical. To all intents and purposes, the two should be hot-swappable.

This has been proven by a number of other manufacturers who ARE offering MXM upgrades. I'm afraid that my only logical conclusion based on rigorous scientific testing is that the 'Incompatibility' spoken of by MSI is the physical construction of the cooling array. This is something MSI decides, something MSI builds, and something MSI and ONLY MSI are responsible for.

Let me be as clear as possible: I have hotwired a 1070 MXM module into a 980m shipped machine using that laptop's own power supply, with an externally mounted cooling solution, and with a couple of BIOS tweaks had it boot, install drivers, and run without a hitch.

The trade in is a sham.

Demand the shipment of proper MXM format cards and cooling.

There is no reason, from a system engineering standpoint, this cannot be done.

What you are going 'from' is irrelevant. Only what you are going to. If the advertised MXM upgrade had been available the only cost you would incur is the purchase of the new card (and retain your existing card), nothing else should enter the equation.

Hoorayy!! this is great news... now all we have to do is wait until we can get our hands on an MSI MXM 1070. This might happen once the ****storm starts breaking out for people who are buying pascal laptops now, expecting upgrades to volta in the future.

Jokes aside though, MiSJAH has already been getting info about potential mxm 1070 upgrades being released/worked on, and I'd personally be more than completely cool with that.

I have a gt72 model that falls flat between having a g-sync panel, and having g-sync support.
Basically, I was let down by MSI when I heard that my laptop was not receiving g-sync support, even though my GPU and screen could technically do it.
I was sure of this, because a driver leaked where g-sync worked perfectly on my computer. Sadly only this old driver worked, and none of the newer ones would give me g-sync.
When I contacted MSI about this, they told me I would have to buy ANOTHER almost identical 980m card for 1K$ with a different codename, to receive official g-sync support. I was piss off by this, because all the people on the ASUS side would get g-sync upgrades for 90$!
Nevertheless, looking at how almost all 1070 laptops officially support g-sync, these upgrades don't only mean faster gaming, but also smoother gaming for me :D

    TL;DR - I'd get g-sync on my gt72 if I had a 1070 because I have the same LG IPS panel

Anyway, MiSJAH, any updates on the 1070s?

Since MSI UK advised they were looking at implementing the MXM GTX1070 upgrade, the prices for the MSI USA trade in, upgrade came out. Because the USA pricing was so much better value I declined the MXM GTX1070 mentioned by UK rep's and requested a GTX1080 appropriate to the cost of a MXM 1080 upgrade.

Last I heard from MSI UK was they needed to consult head office and they would get back to me.

Now is the time to wait and see if MSI HQ, understand that the offers so far have been an insult to their customers and get on board with a like for like chassis replacement with an upgrade to the card of our choice at a reasonable cost.

Called it. Not because I had trialled anything like this or had proof though, just a general distrust of corporate culture and imprecise oversold statements from Marketing Dept about engineering issues

Not sure which "other manufacturers are offering MXM upgrades" re Pascal: Eurocom sell a modded MSI 1070 to put in a 980M P870DM Clevo, you can buy Pascal cards for adding SLI or going 1070-1080 into a P870DM2/3 (if for some strange reason you didn't spec it on ordering) that's about it. But, good to know it can go in other MSI's as well (so long as there's extra space around the slot to fit, unlike the 16F4 GT60 e.g.)

Please share the bios tweaks somewhere? maybe this isn't the appropriate thread

Video or pictures? Until then the "online" experts can claim whatever they want.

What we need is proof that the 1070 or 1080 can be dropped into an MSI laptop. That they work in a Clevo is irrelevant to our cause.

I have one of those modded msi gtx mxm 1070s and if any GT72 (g-sync compat as its a g-sync card) owner wants to meet up or ship me their laptop I will test it with pictures and video proof.

I highly doubt my card would blow up so I'd be willing to help out. I am almost certain its a simple heatsink/vbios issue. They are purposely blocking it to sell new laptops or maybe there was some sort of issue with Nvidia blocking them from allowing mxm upgrades.

For GT80(S) owners, there's also a crippled EC firmware to get around, which probably comes with associated regulatory agency certification issues.

Your laptop will not be able to fully utilize 2x330W without a firmware change. If you look at the underside, you will probably find an amperage/voltage rating which it is certified for. Increasing the power limit would probably require MSI to go through a recertification process or something similar.

I agree; what is very relevant is the engineer above said he put a MSI 1070 in a MSI GT72 and it worked. Seemingly proving MSI wrong that it can't be done.

Emailed you to join that group

So as far as things are what made you buy the laptop you have? I bought the msi Titan GT80S 970 sli because of the "Guaranteed 2 generations of GPU upgrade" since I'm cashing in $2,500+..... But now I feel scammed...
