The image is useless, it doesn't show what the GPU in the GT72 is. Could be 880m, therefore upgradable.
Also MSI have accepted they should have provided upgrades, they have sent out emails offering the trade in, upgrade scheme. -
Well yeah, the only contention, between us and MSI, is what constitutes as fair compensation. They are currently taking a dump, then handing us a spoon.
I am interested in seeing these individualized emails they're sending out next week. I had sent them an over 4,000 character email, detailing my acceptable terms.
Would be something, if their response is, "Okay cool, let's do that."mason2smart likes this. -
yea right. you guys take the trade in if you want. Some of us in the US are fighting back using our fine court system and the fair trades act.tiliarou likes this.

Read what I wrote. I support your legal fight. Just what the image shows has already been demonstrated and there's no info on the GPU.

That pic made me look at the box mine came in. It wasn't there, but the box had stickers that included the specs. So the box as a whole should be good enough, ...plus the S models came after the 900 series came out, so that dates it to certain hardware.
That MSI should be providing upgrades isn't changed by this alternate solution, especially when the terms of that solution are unacceptable.mason2smart, hmscott, tiliarou and 2 others like this. -
Hi all,
I have a GT72 2QE with GTX980m and also looking forward to the upgrade. But unfortunately I'm in China. So guess I'm not in the "Selected Countries". Anyway, I still wrote to MSI about it. Got the similar response like "We don't have any upgrade option or trade in program for your laptop"
What I'm going to say is. My friend bought his first MSI laptop, a GT73vr 6RF with GTX1080, and of course he wants upgradability for his laptop. But found that MSI also changed their advertisement for GT73vr. So I think this should be raised to another level. it's not just for ppl who owns GT72/72S GT80/80S but also for ppl who bought a MSI laptop with MXM graphic card BEFORE they changed the advertisement.
On the other hand, there are also some GTX1070 MXM cards available on Taobao when the seller is not sure if my GT72 is compatible with. Then he recommend me to go for GTX1060 instead. Said he's sure about the compatibility.mason2smart, sasuke256, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -
Update regarding MSI Australia's approach. I was sent a second email saying the EXACT same thing as the first. No reply to the feedback I provided to the first email.
This is their second email (which is the same as the first):
Dear Loyal Gamers,
Thank you for your continuous support of MSI products.
We, MSI, can offer the latest GT72VR 6RE(Dominator Pro Tobii)-099AU with GTX 1070 graphic cards at $3,599, which is gives a 10% discount compared to its original selling price of $3,999
If you agree the price, please give us a feedback to Ivy Hsu before 31st Oct, 2016. In the mean time, you have to return your NB Gt72s 6qf (gtx980) with battery, AC adaptor, and related key parts if you decide to have the trade in.
we would like to know your feedback, and will do our best to offer the best service for you.

The level of MSI staff is really low... In France, they replied to our email refusing trade in by saying that the "MXM module + the GPU would cost us more than doing the trade-in" (translated from French), i.e. the guy/girl has absolutely NO IDEA what he/she is talking about. The MXM module as a whole (GPU+fitting+heatpipe+heatsink) is around 900€, so I don't see where/when 900€ is superior to 1400-1600€ they are proposing from GT72 to GT73VR... Moreover they tell us that if we are not happy we can "write an email to HQ in Chinese". Period.
Looks like the Aussie MSI staff are not better ! MSI will be hugely impacted by this scandal and gamers will think twice before trusting this brand again ! -
Finally, the first bit of communication received from MSI about my original reply.
My original reply:
I absolutely don't agree. You want to me to give you my 5000 laptop so I can save a measly 500 bucks on a brand new laptop?! That's just outrageous! I can't believe you actually want me to spend another 3500 dollars.
Infact your offer is so terrible, I could even sell my laptop on eBay for more 2000, buy your new laptop at FULL price and still have more money left!!
The point is you guys made promises that you now can't keep. I don't understand why I need to spend a ridiculous 3500 to buy a new laptop from you. If you guys had any respect for the customer, you would offer such new laptops below 1K for an exchange of my near new 980gtx laptop.
This is a post by a MSI US customer:
http://i.imgur.com/VLOhaUq.jpg
This is the email he received from MSI, clearly showing that he has to only spend 1000 dollars to upgrade to a gt73vr with 1080. Why should I have to spend 3500 on an inferior laptop with only a 1070?
And their reply:
HI,
I got your email. And I will try our best to fight back to HQ.
Thank you so much for your replying.

The 1060 is sort of a sidegrade.
FYI, GT62VR w/1070 is $1400 in store at Microcenter, for those who might see that as a more cost effective solution for themselves.mason2smart, RandomID and hmscott like this. -
Any better? MXM Upgradeable at top center of box. GPU on label: GTX 980 / 8GB GDDR5
S/N blacked out for privacy.
I could probably cut and flatten the box for a better shot if it helps.

Yeah, you can't argue with that.

This is still something MSI has already acknowledged. We gain nothing. The 'trade in, upgrade' scheme being offered by MSI is because of this.
This may be useful if the same boxes were used in the regions where MSI is claiming there is/was no upgrade path.

It's not today's upgrade I'm worried about so much as the following generation when my GPU starts lagging behind. I will not pay MSI a cent to upgrade this laptop. And I expect them to make this right so that either this machine can accept the post GTX 1080 generation or give me a one for one swap for an equivalent laptop that can. If they offer anything less our courts will sort it out in the USA.CARL JONES likes this.

So it appears MSI are happy to go back on their word and I highly doubt any product feature, such as an upgrade, would be honored by these people.
My messages to them were bloody confusing:
HI,
I have just read that you will not be providing upgradeable video cards as previously promised in the advertisement of the MSI GT80.
In America you will be providing a trade in program as advertised in " http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...ents-and-all-things-msi.795144/#post-10326272"
When will this be available in Australia and how would I go about taking up this upgrade offer?
Regards,
Matt
Dear Customer,
Upgradeable MXM Design
Thanks to its replaceable MXM graphics module, the GT72 comes with more possibilities for future upgrades than other notebooks. The original configuration of the GT72, with GTX870M/GTX880M is upgradable to the new, more powerful GTX970M or even GTX980M, depending on your territory.
*MXM upgrade program is only available in selected countries and selected customers with special service, not for end-users to make upgrade by their own.
Best regards,
Wayne (MSI Australia)
Hi Wayne,
Does this mean that you guys arn't supporting a trade in program in australia while you are in the states?
I.e. you won't let me pay for an upgrade to a new system? and does this mean your GTVR laptop will also not be ungradeable in australia?
Dear Matt,
Different regions will have different programs, promotions,prices...etc.
I cannot say anything until there is a confirmation.
Best regards,
Wayne (MSI Australia)
Hey Wayne,
I'm not sure I understand. A confirmation of what?
Your inital response sounded like a soup nazi-esc 'NO TRADE IN FOR YOU' but now it sounds like 'Maybe a trade in is available but it depends on a confirmation.'
I'm sure you're stuck between a rock and a hard place of annoyed customer who spent $6k on a laptop and a company trying to do it's best but as it's a world wide thing, thats easier said that done.
Is there anything that I can do from my end or is this a case of waiting? if it's the latter, then what should I be waiting for and for how long? I don't want to be forgotten.
Dear Matt,
I have actually give you the details already. No such program is available in Australia.

Also. He's lying. I was emailed by MSI in Sydney about a trade in offer. Posted it on the previous 2 pages. -

All ten of George Carlin's dirty words apply to that guy's cluelessness... but I'd forgive him not knowing about Australia's "trade in offer" because there is no evidence of one in formal existence (a 10% discount offer worth $400, for a laptop that'd sell in a day for $2000, is NOT a genuine, planned scheme, it's a fob off).
MSI Australia's mission statement is to do their best to blur the line between conspiracy and ineptitude.
Go straight to consumer affairs/fair trading/civil claims guys, I linked all your respective state offices previously... No one gets anything out of MSI Aus without a formal process... They will frustrate you and contradict themselves twice a day til you give up... listen to me, I AM a (np) lawyer -

I wouldn't be so hard on the MSI guys here, I doubt they were in charge of marketing the laptops and with a lawsuit hanging out there I'm sure they could lose their job if they give any information out.

Hi
Another thought, for those of you that are unsure as to whether or not the country you live in would of had an upgrade service to the 10X0 series of GPU's find out if MSI offer an upgrade from the 8X0 series to the 9X0 series of GPU's.
The countries that offer the upgrade from 8X0 to 9X0, I suspect, will also be the same ones that woud have provided an upgrade from 9X0 to 10X0 gpu's if it had existed.
Also I have sent emails on behalf of my son as well as myself to both Neil and Natalie and have not yet had a reply (we have one MSI laptop each).
There are a couple of additional points:
1) I agree entirely that if they are offering a trade in the condition of the laptop to be traded in should be considered irrelevant, as an aside my sons laptop had a problem the Power supply brick, we had to send the lo tback in, on initial inspection MSI said that there were some light scratches on the lid, this was clearly not the case, I suggested that anyone who does decide to accept the trade in program take some good quality pictures of their laptop before they pack it up and send it off.
2) MSI messed up, they need to to hold their hands up and apologies, offering a 10% discount on a laptop is insulting, quite a number of people were happy to accept making a small payment to cover some costs, but MSI have been fobbing customers off, now they have upset quite a number of people and they have lost the goodwill that they had.
Bottom line is that whatMSI have done is false advertising, switch and bait, or whatever else you want to call it, and if I were in the US I would be joining up to take part in the class action that is being organised but unfortunately I am not.
3) Putting a time limit on the upgrade offer is also underhand.Last edited by a moderator: Oct 24, 2016 -
I agree with you 100%, but the guys posting here are just messengers, don't shoot them.

I don't think MSI is differentiating between the GT80 / GT80S, as they have upgrade options for 980 single and 980 SLI, and those were both only available with the S series, right?MiSJAH likes this.
