I upgraded to a single 512GB PCIe SSD and 1TB 2.5" SATA SSD which I will keep and transfer over.

No news for France we still have this joke of an offer !

I asked if I could trade in for gs63vr and was told no, it had to be the gt line. I am planning to just wait for 11 series gpu now. I already bought an alienware with 1070 last month and paying 1500 to upgrade to gtx 1080 is not worth it for me

Hmmm, I was told any model was ok... let me ask about this specific model.
-
I am of the opinion, that the value of our Maxwell laptops will depreciate when the Volta machines drop.
Think about it like this: People who take the Pascal upgrade, will also have the option of trading that machine in for Volta. If I decide to trade in my GT73VR for a machine with a 1170, while you decide to trade in your GT72S, do you think we'll get the same offer? I doubt it, because you would be jumping TWO generations, to my one.
Or, MSI will still say that they are "only charging you the cost of upgrading the GPU". But, we know that the valuation of our laptops came into play this time, so why wouldn't it in the next? Your current laptop simply won't be worth as much to them in a year, so are they going to go out of their way to give you the same offer, are they?
All of that said, we really need an official word on that.hmscott likes this. -

I posed that question to MSI yesterday, lets see what they say.MiSJAH likes this.

As a GT80S 980m SLI owner, I feel like SLI 1070's may be overkill for the GT83VR's 1080p display. It is better to move into the GT73VR Titan SLI 1070 with the 4K display or even the 120hz display?
I am ok losing the mechanical keyboard, because my co-workers are constantly complaining about my typing. lol.
I was also looking at the GS63 Stealth with the 1060 and 4K display since it looks like I will be on the road more often. I am just not sure I want that much of a downgrade or if MSI will even go for it. If they had the GS63 with a 1070, that would be my primary choice. -
@MSI Natalie
"Hi all - we will be announcing our TRADE IN program for the MXM upgrade solution this week. We know you are eager to find out what you can upgrade to and costs but we would rather have ALL the details to hand ready before we announce. We thank you for your patience. The MSI UK NOTEBOOK Team"
Where is the announcement? That was posted on the 7th November, I have received no offers from that date. What is causing the delay by MSI UK Notebook, when MSI USA is already implementing their scheme? -
Thank you
Hi Andrew, please accept my apologies if this post sounds like my last post, but you received your final trade in offers on 1/10/16, and you already have the best possible price. If you would like me to re-send these, or wish to take part in the trade-in program, feel free to get in touch!
As I mentioned in my last post, if you have any further questions, please continue to discuss with management via email

How strange I thought you may have read the email you were copied into on the 11th November 2016:
So whom is correct, you saying I have received my final offer or Neil, stating the solution is still being 'worked on'?
And if you could clear up for the community what was the facebook MSI UK Notebook were referring to when they said "We will be announcing our TRADE IN program for the MXM upgrade solution this week" on the 7th November 2016?
@MSI Natalie , this makes MSI look like a very disjointed operation. Has the UK Trade in scheme commenced? Have I received the final offer from MSI UK? After the conversation between AJ, Neil and HQ where has the "global press release" been made?
Many thanks,
Andrew.tiliarou likes this. -
Can anyone tell me what are the specification differences between the GT73VR and the GT72VR if both are configured with I7-6700hq, 16GB DDR4, 128GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 17.3" FHD IPS 1920 x 1080, and GTX 1070?
@Kevin@GenTechPC , @Johnksss@iBUYPOWER I'm trying to understand the difference between the two, not the configurable differences, but the bare chassis differences?hmscott likes this. -
Might have what you are looking for...

Yeah, Read that thread first but only came to the conclusion that the GT72VR has an inferior motherboard to the GT73VR. I'm trying to work out what you gain with the GT73VR if configured as my last post.
Other than the MUX switch and RAID ability?hmscott likes this. -
for what i can find that is it .
-
So taking a GT72VR in the trade in deal is a downgrade from a machine with RAID and MUX. I wonder why MSI don't take that into consideration......more demonstration of how they treat their customers.briedfox likes this.
-
What is the biggest gripe you have about mux exactly?
Edit:
And what makes you think the laptop does not have this switch and that it's just disabled? -
I have been saying the same thing. I have a GT72S and they originally from the start were offering me a GT72vr as a comparable trade. Where in my mind this is not comparable at all. At the end of the day i should not have to pay more money to move to a GT73vr as they are actually are comparable (processor , hd slots , mux switch)
-
No gripes about MUX.
Just MSI trying to charge me for less features in the trade in deal.briedfox likes this. -

What is your deal for on the table right now? -
Yeah this. And there's no benefit in gaming from the newer hardware as I posted before (aside from the 1070 obviously) - http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/9771654/fs/7098474 that's my GT72 2QE vs a newer GT72 with 6th gen I7 and DDR4. Actually that's the highest scoring GTX 980M with newer hardware vs mine being in the top 30 of the older hardware.
IT'S A SCAM. -
I know the difference between the unlocked and locked CPU's that's why I asked about the two models configured the same. Thanks though.
-
Man, those are some low 980M scores? With mine being the top scores of all 980M's. Including ones I did using only a single core on cpu.
The differences between the machines. Not the cpu as I know you were not talking about that. I should have pointed that part out.
Looks like you should wait it out to jump on the next gpu train and not even bother with what's out now.....MiSJAH likes this. -
So anyone trading in a GT72 with MUX and RAID, if offered a GT72VR, it's a downgrade and your prices should be adjusted accordingly as you are losing features.briedfox likes this.
-
That is an opinion, not a fact.
-
It's downgrade in chassis/motherboard - fact.
@Johnksss@iBUYPOWER I realise working for a reseller means you have a bias towards manufacturers, but whom in their right mind would pay for less features.
To quote MSI, you pay for the cost of the GPU upgrade, so losing features should be compensated. -
Just as I have come to release you will never be satisfied no matter how it comes out unless it's free or you get more than the bargain is worth. Mux is worthless for a gamer and you can raid 2 m.2 drives.
Flip side
keep asking. Maybe they will give in and see your side of the story. No one ever said you had to give up on that quest. -
I want a comparable cost to the advertised MXM upgrade, that would be circa £3-500 in my case for an upgrade to GTX 1080. MSI presently want £1,424 to upgrade to a GTX 1080.
Free, no. Cost comparable, yes. This is after all an alternative to MSI's advertised upgrade that they cannot fulfil.
MUX is great when I am out in my camper. And my GT72 has 4 m.2 SSD slots.
All of the above are facts! -
But would you not say in my situation going from a gt72s to a gt72vr is a downgrade?
slower locked cpu vs unlocked cpu. More NvMe slots. ( i currently have two in my laptop)
Mux switch is not a big deal to me as i am in the same mind frame. It has only been used once and that was during an extended power outage (from hurricane) and was using it for watching a movie.briedfox likes this. -
where are you getting this £3-500 figure? i cant see any pricing on 1080 mxm kits. and where does it say msi let you resell youre old card?
-
Mux is great for you, but not the majority. (But I totally get what you are saying because on my macbook pro i use the integrated graphics 98 percent of the time)
Fact 1: Your board is obsolete with anything 10 series or higher production card installed by MSI.
Fact 2: You can not run a 1070 or higher card and claim warranty repair on said card.
Do you even have thunderbolt 3 or is it just usb 3.1 type C?
Fact 3: Slots that can operate far faster than your current version. Not as many, very true!
But now a days most people do not want to run raid 0 and risk losing everything. (Personal opinion only!) And with your raid example it's no faster at 4k than a single nvme or ahci drive. Which is where this would all matter most for people.
I have nothing against price adjustments, but your adjustments do not account for the new adjustments in the new machine. That is only my opinion and not a fact.
Flip side:
It's a down grade.
How much off the price do you think that out date stuff should be worth? I'm all ears.
Going from a GT72 to a GT72VR
4 slow m.2 slots and mux. The real benefit is the size you can put here at a greater profit margin. Unless those slots are not made to hold 1TB m.2 drives?
Nothing wrong with trying to bargin, as long as it is with in reason.
You currently have what exactly in the way of m.2 drives? -
Received the answer from MSI about valid laptops for the trade-in, and it is GT models only. We can't pick from the GS or other lines.
"Hi Scott,
The Trade-in offer is good to any model in the GT Line only.
Anything else is not possible. Otherwise it would post a conflict to 2nd generation’s trade-in if user were able to trade for GS models or other models."Johnksss likes this. -
Mine came with 1 NVMe and now has a second one in it (512gb 950 pro). But if i understand correctly it is capable of 4 total. see attached picture.
specs of my laptop show
- HDD Capacity
128GB SSD (PCIe Gen3x4) + 1TB SATA HDD (7200RPM) - HDD Interface
PCIe + SATA
Attached Files:

That is sata and nvme. not two nvme slots.

Hi Natalie, as you know NBR is an Internationally read and participated forum, we have lots of people from the UK here.
Would it be possible for you to post the current UK Trade-in details here on NBR?
The trade-in text and chart of trade-in options would be very helpful for reference by GT72/GT80 owners here on NBR.
Here in this thread would be good, and again in the thread for MSI Announcements would be good too:

there are 2 more slots on the other side of that card. I will have to pull it out to see you might be correct it could be Two Nvme and two sata. I know for sure i have this installed on the other side of the card.

Thanks. I'm totally in the dark there. And I think you are right about it having two under neath. Which should allow for 4 sata drives or 2 and 2 if im not mistake.

Rjtech pricing on the clevo 1080 MXM kits (made by MSI) ~£900. Sold prices on UK eBay for MXM GTX980m ~£500.
Simples
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
i can see one recent sold listing for £320. minus 10% ebay fee = 288. wheres link to 1080 mxm pricing?
anywhere did they say we could keep our old gpu or you wishful thinking that?
-
Try reading through the thread. Posted multiple times. MXM upgrades used to be sold in kit form, they never kept your GPU then, why would the now?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
but we dont know this? everything i see on mxm kit says in big letters, "for msi to put in, not you" etc
im not going through a 320 page thread for a link lolhmscott likes this. -
nvm found the price on google. $1250 for 1080 = £1006 + 20% vat (as we are in the uk) = 1207
minus 288 resale
= £919
not the £3-500 you say? am i missing something
edit: and thats IF you got it back to resell, which was never specified. if not, its £1207.hmscott likes this. -
@MSI Natalie
I have emailed you 4 weeks ago and even sent a follow up a few days ago but no reply with an offer whatsoever.
I have emailed you again at the new email address you provided, [email protected]. Any chance I we could get an offer??hmscott likes this. -
Except we are buying locally not importing MSI retails in the UK. Also no added margin for the reseller direct from the manufacturer.
If you cannot make the effort to read and understand the thread why would your uninformed opinion matter?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
following the thread =/= being arsed to go through 320 pages looking for one link.
are you saying gpus are made locally? i said vat, that 20% extra on products we buy, not import tax.
if you cant grasp the simple fact that tech is cheaper in the usa than here, and cant see that £1200 is not £300, maybe you are not only uninformed, but blind to anything other than posts that are joining you in raising pitchforks to your mental money-grabbing witch hunt.MiSJAH likes this. -
Competent and articulate response old bean.
Ok let's work this your way:
GTX 1080 retails in the UK roughly £ for $ so £1250. My GTX 980M sells for £250. Total cost to me £1,000.
MSI are trying to charge me an extra £424 for things I don't need, that demonstrably brings no benefit to gaming because they cannot fulfil their advertising.
Is that clear enough for you?
Why should I pay for things MSI must include because of their screw up?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
The point is, is that MSI advertised an upgrade of MXM GPU as you well know and not an exchange and upgrade offer.
I own the MXM GPU that is in my laptop, I paid for it when I bought the laptop, or is there a cluase somewhere that MSI have written where they keep ownership of it?
If I were able to send my laptop off for a GPU upgrade there would have to be an agreement between myself and MSI as to what was to happen to the GPU before I even agreed to send my laptop in for the upgrade.
I either agree that they can have it and reduce the cost of my GPU upgrade or I request it back and sell it privately.
Andthere are other examples of GTX980m cards selling, one sold just the other week for just under $800 US
So kindly stop trolling this thread, thank you.MiSJAH likes this. -
those are 8gb. is yours 8gb?
wait, do you really think that all of the advancements that pc part manufacturers can muster, from new cpu generations, to memory twice as fast, ssds faster and more stable, to newer faster interfaces, offer zero benefit? if so, im done giving you my "uninformed" opinion lol, theres no hope for you. if you cant justify paying for upgrades like the rest of us, then dont. im sure your torch pixels in minecraft will look the same regardless. -
Ciao amigo.
