Answer back from MSI on whether the MSI 16L13 1060/1070 is an available laptop for GT72/GT80 owners to get on trade-in:

    "Hi Scott,

I have asked my PM, he said it’s not included in the trade-in."

I guess it'll also depend on the person. The one in contact with me gets back the same day.. if not for me being at the opposite side of the world I would've probably have gotten my stuff already, since they have to send it to my home in the US and they have to forward it to me it'll be like 2-3 week turnaround for my situation.

I also sent in the form way before the deadline.
    > Response w/ asking for serial number if not provided.
    > The list of upgrades may include one if you requested some other models.
    > Questions about shipping of you live other than the US but have family/home in the states.
    > CC info form etc..
    > Status/tracking..

Hopefully I get this before Christmas.. and it'll be nice to come home to after working everyday xD.

I just got my first personal email from MSI last night. They want the full specs of my laptop since it is a custom order and they can't tell off the serial number. I am more interested in skipping this upgrade and getting volta. I asked a few questions on that and see what I get back. I haven't seen much talk on that since most seem to be taking the current offer so I will post the info.

Everyone that hasn't gotten a response, if a lot of time has passed, be sure to send a new email with the same questions/doubts. They do take time but that's mostly because it is a smaller dedicated team to it. It took them a while to first give me the offer, and I am still in communication with them, but likewise I am awaiting some answers before trading in. It's good to be patient, but if you haven't heard anything in a week or two, be sure to fire up a new email :)

I shipped my laptop back today vie Fed Ex. Cost to me $47 They will receive it Friday afternoon.
I will report back turn around time and any other communication I receive.

My laptop was in as new condition so that should not be a concern.

What is a concern is the cost to ship it back...the time to wipe and reinstall windows...and to then set up the new laptop as I want after receiving it.

Word of warning for anyone who is sending in their unit first before getting the new one, temper your expectations on the turnaround once it reaches MSI. Mine got there Monday morning, and my rep just responded saying he hasn't gotten a report that it's gone through inspection yet. The 1 to 2 business days it says it will take in the e-mail might be closer to 3-4 in practice.

Hopefully I get a ship notification tomorrow. I'm kind of bummed, I was hoping on having my new unit early next week. I returned my GT62 to Microcenter in anticipation of this GT73, so I'm dead in the water until then. I've got a 6700k/1080 desktop, but with three kids under 4, I get zero time at home to use it, all my gaming is done outside the house.

And again they put it like they only care about US customers.
Does the last line mean that the program is/will be available worldwide or is it just another attempt to exclude many customers by saying them "sorry, you're not on the list" privately?

My issue with that is that the upgrade cost WITH a fancier laptop than I currently have (GT80 w/970m or 980m SLI) is more than what I originally paid for the laptop (GT72 Dom Pro w/980m). I dont need a whole GT8X Titan, nor can I afford such a drastic jump.

Sure, a mechanical keyboard laptop would be neat, but my GT72 barely fits in the supplied backpack as well, which I use regularly. I cant imagine any of the 18" notebooks fit.

I guess I'll just have to keep trying

I've swapped out the DVD in several laptops with a BD writer, and I think the most I paid was $65 for the BD drive.

You can swap the original faceplate on the DVD onto the new BD drive, it then fits the form of the laptop correctly - but does still say DVD - it's a stealth BD drive :)

The last swap I just left the BD flat faceplate on, it was "indented" into the curve of the laptop, but it was out of my sight so not a bother.

At the risk of sounding spoiled or ungrateful, it's a matter of being inconvenienced and having to spend more on top of spending more. I just want this style laptop that continues performing well, with a solid warranty and BR drive.

The faceplate/form on the laptop itself does not concern me, I'm almost purely a function over form kind of guy when it comes to that stuff. I just dont want to have to rip in to it, install the BR drive, and then Mjölnir forbid something goes wrong, they not cover it under any warranty because of it

That's why I left the last BD faceplate as it came, and left the original faceplate on the included DVD drive in place - so I could pop it back in when I sold it.

The main risk is popping off the DVD form fitting face plate - it's a bit fragile and you can break a clip or two until you get used to the method of removal, which is why I pointed it out.

The rest is pretty easy. Popping off the backplate - or on some laptops the DVD retention screw is accessible outside and you don't need to remove the backplate.

You asked MSI to include a BD model GT72VR, maybe there is one - several of the product pages for GT72VR models don't mention which Optical drive is included - this Tobii one for instance:
    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GT72VR-6RE-Dominator-Pro-Tobii-Landing.html#hero-overview

Please let us know what MSI answers :)

You can email Tom at MSI to order a spare ODD bezel if you don't want to risk breaking your current one. The only downside is the long lead time of around 8 weeks.

They put it up on the website. Color me impressed. Like I said before, the first wave of us have probably been the guinea pigs, and they were going to go public went they had the process fully ironed out.

Hopefully this means they have now dedicated a large amount of staff to this, so the communications and turn around times shoot through the roof.

There's literally been one guy responding with the personalized emails in the US. Shout out to that one guy, he's a good dude.

When you have these amounts of money on the line, there's no such thing as undue entitlement. Don't stop until you get exactly what you want out of this.

Well I courteously asked MSI for the details of the UK Pascal Trade-Upgrade Program to post here (and other forums I am active in). MSI UK point blank refused,
. So why are MSI not willing to provide an overview of the specific models/costs/upgraded tech to the community as a whole?

what type of time frame did you encounter from date you submitted the upgrade form? Second is there a time frame one can wait until they send back their GT for the upgrade. My current unit is GT72 Dom Pro w 980m, so my upgrade is to 1070 GT72 Dom Pro for $700. I just cant kick the $700 out on demand, my wife would lose it, once it is all said and done my end cost will be average very average not a good deal at all, little choked about that as what I have now is a good deal but it is not upgradeable in future and that will lower the resale value when I need to sell it off. Once I eventually get the new one I am hoping to keep it 3 yrs minimum. I also invested into 4 new M.2 SSD and 16GB additional ddr3 for my current unit so I have to sell off that stuff or at least use the M.2's in new system but of course I want to benefit from nvme and the included 128 pcie nvme ssd in the new unit is just not enough space....

The other bummer is I have a i7 5700HQ and will end up with an i7 6700 which is slightly slower overall

So, Iv'e spent the past 12 hours lurking through this and other threads while my interest in modern age products was sated with research, I bought a MSI GT72 roughly 2 years ago now with the intent of future-proofing it, I sank an additional grand into the hardware. But the 9xxm series was not an available option at the time and my need for the device was dire. My question is, after copious searching without any luck, has MSI mentioned anything about offers for the older 8xxm "enthusiast" GT72 owners? I know they were offered the "two generation upgrades", but seeing as how they offer the upgrade program I'm curious as to costs.

No, there is no Pascal MXM GPU made for the GT72S, you can upgrade through trade-in for a new laptop built with Pascal GPU's.

See the #1 post and download the trade-in form, fill out a text email with the requested details and send it to the email address in the form.

You will get back the instructions and options for trade-in. You have the flexibility to upgrade / downgrade to another GT model by subtracting or adding the MSRP difference between the model you want and the models offered in the trade-in table.

There is no current expiration of the trade-n offer, ignore the 10/31/16 date.

Please let us know how it goes for you and your trade-in :)

This is a good thing, right?

Trade-ins through 2 generations of GPU's as promised for any GT72/GT80 GTX9xxm owner. They can participate for both generations of upgrades.

The GT72/GT80 GTX8xxm owners can participate in the Pascal upgrades as their 2nd generation of GPU upgrades. Having already had the opportunity through MXM GPU 970m/980m upgrades.

As @Kevin@GenTechPC asked, did you follow through on doing the upgrade, or are you waiting? :)

Well then thanks for helping out the newcomer, this is the best news I've received all month!

Hoping the quote doesn't come out to a deathly sum/time frame. College keeps me clenched to this outdated rig, but decent 4k output from say a 1080 ti would tie me over for the next few years at least.

I'm lastly only worried about not being able to negotiate with the program to let them allow me to trade up later once the ti is released if at all mobile.

I'll let you all know what is replied if/when.

Emailed the following questions to MSI UK, if they can be bothered to answer I will post their response.

Will the program be weighted in any way to the value of my notebook or will it be as per the released statement "at costs comparable to previous MXM upgrades"?
Which specific "previous MXM upgrades" will the program be based upon?
What is MSI UK Notebook offering in regards to the next generation of GPU upgrade? (MSI USA have advised North American customers that they can either keep their existing notebooks and trade for the next generation or trade now to Pascal and then trade that notebook to the next generation of GPU).
    Please provide a cost breakdown of upgrading to GT73VR with GTX1070, GT73VR with GTX1080, GT73VR with GTX1070 SLI, GT83VR with GTX1070 SLI and GT83VR with GTX1080 SLI.
With all major components matched like for like, CPU, memory, GPU, HDD, SSD, GPU and screen etc which is most similar in features to the GT72 2QE, the GT72VR or the GT73VR?
If MSI Insists on Perfection of User Experience, how do you explain ending the announcement with "No other solution will be offered at this time." If this offered solution is not best providing Perfection of User Experience, why no other solution will be offered?
    Regards,

    Andy

They are not coming out. That is why this thread exists. MSI failed to deliver the advertised MXM upgrades for the GT72 and GT80, so they are offering the trade in, upgrade scam instead.

It seems this whole trade-in thing expired on 10/28. Are they extending this? If so, can I keep my harddrives and stick them in the new unit without voiding the warranty? (I am pretty sure MS has migration tools built in these days to update the new chipset, gpu, etc drivers)? Any idea on cost to go from 980m sli to 1080 gtx sli?

Also, how long are you without the notebook for? Or do they do a cross-ship option?

I was really hoping MSI just had an MXM 1080 kit and I could just click "add to cart". Now it seems I have to go through the whole conundrum of trying to talk to a human at MSI, then doing slow ass back and forth with them. Been there done that as I initially bought this laptop in Nov 2015, but the prev generation. It had a graphics glitch to where the video card would intermittently reset with a black screen and a tray popup. After months of back and forth with their tech support, they finally acknowledged it was a hardware issue and sent me the next generation which is what I am on now. An now I have to go through this **** again? Sorry for the rant, but this is beyond frustrating.

I keep re-reading point three of this:

If you are upgrading to the GTX 1080 version of the notebook, why exactly do you have to pay the cost of upgrading to the GTX 1070 in addition to the cost of upgrading to the GTX 1080?

That's like saying those that had GTX 8 series GPU's would have to have bought a GTX 970m, then a GTX 980M if they wanted to upgrade to the GTX 980M.

What are you getting for those extra $700?

    That is simply ridiculous.

Assuming you are in the US, the deadline is no longer valid. You have to start the process by e-mailing [email protected]. The value they assign to a GT80 w/ 980m SLI is $2100. You can get any GT model on their site and pay the difference from the MSRP, but you can't go lower than the value they give you. To go from my GT80 w/980m SLI to a GT83VR TITAN SLI-024 was $2900. The 1070 SLI option was $1400.
Yes, you can cross-ship. I'd highly suggest this if you can, as mine has been with MSI for a week and I still haven't seen a charge on my card or a ship notification, so you are without your laptop for a few weeks at a minimum.
