I 100% agree, its shady right now but looks fairly legit. I am going to message him and get him to upload a few videos showing performance in game and under full load. If this actually works with the minor issues he mentioned (which obviously could be fixed with vbios/sbios) then MSI is flat out lying which is what I suspected all along..

At the very least, I think GTX1060 could have been an easy GPU upgrade option, for single 970m users. nVidia made sure it wouldn't be possible to SLI, but its still a nice jump from a 970m, and should be cheaper than expected. And no additional power connector etc.

ugh, apparently msi support has removed the GT80 2QD(TITAN SLI)-258US 5th gen driver section. 6th gen has windows 7 and 10 x64 drivers only not 8.1 pro...\

To download MSI BIOS, drivers, firmware or utilities for the GT80 Titan go to the appropriate MSI webpage for your model:

Ah well nice one to the person over at MSI Forums with the upgrade, Just confirms to me that what i was telling the MSI CS Rep was correct. But i very much doubt they will solve the issues relating to the VBIOS/SBIOS though as it would seem that MSI was after pure profit from the start.

So i will stick to my current plan of Unoffically upgrading my GPU considering that the quotes i have had for 11 month old Skylake laptop thats been looked after i.e Cleaned of dust and dirt from the inside and re thermal pasted every 3 months was worth less then some of the users on here with the same GPU but with either Haswell or Broadwell CPU's.

After the GPU being the last upgrade i will make sure the next laptop will not be a MSI Brand one (Includes Barebones AkA Whitebooks).

MSI USA has told us that if you submit your information via the trade-in form to MSI USA ( [email protected] ) you are ok to take advantage of the trade-in past that 12/31 due date.

The MSI US due date of 12/31 and 11/31 before it were for submitting the trade-in form. You don't have to follow through with the trade-in at that point, but you can at any time - open ended so far - no end date.

The MSI UK rules are unknown to me, maybe someone from their office will confirm that 12/31 is the deadline for submitting the trade-in form there as well, but I don't know for sure.

I asked the MSI USA Trade-in Team how things were going, as it had been quiet here, I asked what is planned for after 12/31 deadline, and I asked how the work on the FAQ was going and if the Team will be taking any time off for the Holidays, and here is the reply:

    "Hi Scott,

We have been busy with the program. With the deadline coming soon, we got swarmed with more applicants.

We have been exchanging email a lot lately. I don’t see any slow down until maybe next year. We will be off on both coming Monday, for Post-Christmas and Post-New Year.

Yes, Michael is working on the FAQ. I will check on him to see if he’s done.

It’s holiday season, people may be traveling. So the Forum maybe quiet, or maybe the active forum users are currently talking to the Trade-in team. And I have been dealing with a lot more people I can say 90% of the people I communicated are taking the offer.

I do not have any updates for the program yet, as all the big boys are at HQ having a Year-End meeting. And they won’t be back until after CES show too.

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas!"

In the UK, from the 11 I am in regular contact with, 3 are taking the offer whilst the others are consider alternatives.

Got a response from MSI confirming prices. Looks like I will be trading for a GT73VR with GTX1070. Well, now I need to wait for the next answer in what I am supposed to do now :p

I also upgraded my windows to 10 pro... I might need to revoke that license.

Sure would be nice for them to atleast send something out to those of us that have been told "to be patient" and then have not heard from them at all since. It is kind of infuriating when there is nothing but silence from them yet they as a normal practice take time to respond your emails.

I have no idea on how many people want to trade in, I guess most people dont even know about it.
It was only by chanceIfound out about the trade in.

Hopefully Ill get an emai lback soon, not thats its worth posting my computer of before christmas.

Not sure how it is handled in MSI UK but in USA it is a completely different team. I did have luck today and they are responding, but it is a different person, so I imagine not many people are available and they are probably handling a lot of emails.

MSI has said that the Pascal upgrades require upgraded power and cooling.

I am still concerned that the original 980m MXM card was a 100w card (the 970m was an 81w card) and the 1070 MXM is supposed to be a 150w card.

It's still possible that GT72 980m => upgrade to 1070 won't allow full performance as it can't supply the power and then the temperatures will be too high with the lower dissipation heatplate / heatpipes / heat exchanger / fan.

The one performance test he posted was Unigine Heaven, done at unusually "easy" settings, disabling AA and tessellation:

    IMG_0015.jpg

Here is a desktop 1070 using the "normal" settings with 8xAA and Tessellation at Extreme:
    Desktop 1070 Heaven 4.0 results.png

I'd like to see his GT72 upgraded 1070 install run the "normal" Unigine Heaven and see the temperatures and power draw monitoring results.

Or, someone with a GT73VR 1070 can run the same Unigine settings he posted, see how that result compares to his, and see the temperatures and power draw monitoring results.

Still watching that thread for updates for more performance results :)

Hi guys! I bought this wonderful MSI laptop with 6820HK, 32GB ddr4 and 512GB (raid 0) ssd nvme and a GTX 980M SLI.

This is my first MSI (I had a Clevo P170EM and P370SM before) and I would to know the procedure for flashing the gpus' bios and which bios I have to download.

I flashed a GTX 675MX some years ago, so I need a refresh of my memory :p

Congrats on the new GT80S (?), you would do better to post in the GT80 (more active), or the GT80S Owners thread for info and support for installing a unlocked vBIOS:

This is the thread that was started to work with GT72 / GT80 owners to get MSI to follow through on their offer of 2 generations of GPU upgrades.

A laptop trade-in program was offered from MSI USA - and then MSI UK along with other regions have slowly offered a form of those same upgrades.

If you are the original owner of an MSI USA GT80S you also can get 2 generations of GPU ugprades, if you bought it used then that option isn't available.

The rules in other regions are different, so check with your local region for details.

Check the 1st post for information gathered along the way.

Svet GPU Upgrades are talked about in the GT80 / GT80S threads, see you there :)

If you bought it new retail, you have an address in the US to register it, and you can do the trade-in deal from that address, I think you have a chance to handle the upgrade through the MSI USA Trade-in.

    http://event.msicomputer.com/usagttradein/

They ask you to send in information listed in this >> form <<

And send that info and inquiry here: [email protected]

MSI USA currently has a deadline of 12/31/2016 - a few days away - to sign up for the trade-in, but you have an undisclosed limit of time to follow through and do the trade-in after submitting the form requesting a trade-in offer.

You could also check with MSI ITA, but we haven't really heard anything from them...if you do please let us know.

It's likely your best shot is with MSI USA since you purchased at retail in the USA originally.

    Good luck :)

they replied to me at close of their hours tonight. really tempted but need to know, the extra 64gb ram is almost worth the extra 500 they want over the 1800 for the straight up comparable, but i don't need the extra hd space as i already have 2 samsung m.2 512gb sticks in here. if there are 4 slots, i could technically give myself a 1.5TB boot drive and install games on it.

    GT80 w/970M SLI

    GT83VR Titan Pro w/GTX 1070 SLI

    $1,800

    GT83VR TITAN SLI-055

    or

    GT83VR Titan Pro w/GTX 1070 SLI

    $1,800 + $500 = $2300

    GT83VR TITAN SLI-023

opinions? I play mostly elite dangerous, Ark, Middle earth - shadow of mordor, skyrim, etc. probably be a year or two before i get into VR too.

You have 3 M.2 slots in the GT83VR, not 4 - that was the GT80 models that still had 4 active M.2 SATA slots.

    The GT80S brought the current 3 x m.2 - with 2 PCIE and 1 SATA M.2 configuration.

There is 1 2.5" slot, and 1 2.5" optical slot which you can swap for a 2.5" SATA SSD/HDD.

Those are the storage ports available.

You can also get a 2.5" 3rd party adapter to hold 2 x M.2 SATA drives to fit in that 2.5" bay, but be careful to find one with correct dimensions - and note that both of those drives will go through 1 SATA interface so if both drives are being accessed you are still only getting 1x SATA throughput. I don't have any specific part recommendations currently, if you find one please post.

The 64GB memory is really only of use if you have software that can use that much memory, want to run multiple VM's at the same time that take up a lot of memory, and you could split off some of that memory for a RAM drive to host software to run from it - very quickly.

Otherwise, if you already have the storage, you can always buy faster / cheaper memory, and if you are so inclined you could save $$$ by getting the lower RAM / Storage configuration.

The GT83VR 1070 SLI model is the sweet spot, have you considered the GT73VR 1070 SLI model?

Maybe even jump up to the 1080 SLI GT83VR? YOLO!

Good luck, and please come back and let us know how it works out :)

I used to own more, but I do have been selling my personal older gaming machines to friends, to keep'em close. It doesn't fully show in my latest review pictures, but behind the GT73 and GT80, is a GT60 :D but soon it will be GT73VR x 2 and I will probably lend the GT60 to my brother, as his desktop is having problems.

All my MSI laptops since 2010 are fully working, all being used, all still playing games. This past weekend I helped upgrade my previous barebone GT70 to an intel 3940xm, and before that, a 970m. I also restored the good old GX660R though I need to fully clean it.

Sadly I no longer have as much time available as before, so I won't be expanding my collection dramatically. I was originally going to upgrade the GT80 before the whole upgrade plan, but now I just have simply better machines to work with.

Yeah they also got back on me. I will most likey send my machine next week. They offered the crossover option of sending me the machine first, but we are in no hurry, specially during the holidays.

Would you consider going sideways to a 1080? going from 970m SLI to single 1080 will give you about 40% more performance, all on stock. And a massive bump in VR performance. If only GT83 is an option, I would go for the base model, spending more money on ram is something you can do any other time to be honest.

if i could pull the extra 700 out of my arse and justify it to my wife I would get the 1080 sli model. The only 73 models they offered were the GT73VR TITAN 4K-226 at 900 for upgrade, the GT73VR TITAN PRO-003 at 1100, and the GT73VR Titan Pro-201 at 1900. dont see any sli models on chart unless i missed it on one of those three while looking at specs. Time to go look at specs on each. any real reason to get a 4k machine if I only have one tv in the house thats even 120hz?

I had thought about the memory issue. last time I had 10 installed on here i ran into out of memory issues, and that was 10 pro which i have to find out how to transfer the license as it was the free upgrade of my windows 8.1 pro upgrade off my toshiba that i digitally entitled.

I had thought about going to the single 980, really like the mechanical keyboard, but wife would like the quieter chiclets. They dont offer a single 1080 video card option in the 83's do they?

For me its a question of having 16GB and 256GB ssd, vs 32GB and 512SSD, which I have at the moment, I am wondinerg is there any other diffrence between the two models besides extra memory and SSD space.
For£500I would get an equivalent laptoponly with 1080 card.

So its either £290 or £500, isthe price diffrence justified.

MSI USA Trade-in Team said we can pick any GT model, they didn't put up a comprehensive list, find a model -xxx number for the SLI model you want, and ask them.

Basically they said given the trade-in offer and sample trade-in's, use the MSRP difference as the number to estimate the cost of the GT model you want that is off chart. The MSRP has been in all the product page Specification tabs, at the bottom of the list.

So pick a GT73VR SLI 1070 model to ask for their offer :)

IDK about Windows 10 memory issues, don't run Windows 10, but I wouldn't be surprised. 32GB should be enough, 16GB for just gaming.

I transfered a Windows 8.1 Pro upgrade from one laptop to another when I returned one for another, needed to spend some time on the phone with MS going between departments to finally get someone with access to their correct DB to enter release from one so I could attach it to another laptop.

1080 SLI would be enough to support 4k, maybe even 1070 SLI if the game supports SLI, but we are still just off the mark for full 4k support a Ultra/top settings for all games - that doesn't mean we can't drop some eye-candy to make it work.

Windows 10 is better at scaling 4k, but older apps - some don't support scaling well, so be sure your every day apps support 4k scaling with readable menu's and dialogs.

If the $ difference were between 1070 and 1080, I would say go for the 1080.

If the $ difference is between memory / storage, I'd say go for the cheaper option, and get your own RAM / Storage for better / cheaper solutions.

There are 1TB M.2 SATA and 2.5" SATA drives out there cheap now, and for everyday use - not benchmarking - the M.2 SATA's are great price vs size values.

    The single 1080 + 6820HK is a great combo in the GT73VR

Always go for the best GPU first, CPU 2nd, RAM/Storage - I keep it minimal from the builder as usually I have better options as upgrades.

I don't mind pulling things apart to install them - important to consider if you don't like to, then get the RAM / Storage from the vendor to get it all under the same warranty support :)

    Yeah, there doesn't seem to be a single 1080 / 1070 GT83VR model.

There were single 980m / 970m GT80's, but some bought them thinking they could later upgrade them to SLI, unfortunately MSI didn't offer any such upgrade.

It would have required new heatsinks for both GPU's/CPU to go from single to SLI, and they would have to swap out the original single 980m/970m as it wasn't an SLI enabled GPU.

At least MSI seems to learn their lessons and apply them to new model configurations, once they figure out the permutations owners want. ;)

by the time i get a 4k tv in my house, the new machine will be out of date as well lol. besides, can output 2 4k on the thunderbolt according to the dual 1070 non 4k page i listed last message. i know, its nice to have if the difference is low enough in price. 4k model has 3799 msrp so 2100 roughly i am betting? worth it?

It's a very personal thing, the 4k screens are very nice, great color, usually IPS + Gsync (not sure about MSI), but I'd rather run 1080p internally for the comfort of my eyes - and the ability to not need to futz around with scaling constantly - as I switch apps and resolution to match.

The 120hz TN panel 5ms MSI offers has had nothing but good reports, but it is a TN panel so you will have off - side views impaired - you need to be face on to get the best image - not a problem for me, but some don't like it.

If you have a local shop somewhere, or friends with these new models I'd get a look personally before committing.

Watching youtube reviews is the next best thing, reading reviews here elsewhere and asking questions of owners too.

The 17.3" 60hz Gsync IPS screen is supposed to OC to 100hz like the 18.4" 60hz, but YMMV so don't count on it. Again, read reviews and try to see it in person.

It's tough to make screen recommendations, as it's very personal. For me 4k isn't a good idea, but for someone else it might be the best choice for them.

I should mention that with the load on the MSI USA Trade-in Team just resolving trade-in's the first time, I would make sure whatever you get is something you will keep - and not need to return because it isn't what you expected - as that return turnaround for another model will likely have as long a turnaround time as the 1st trade-in.

Be sure you order what you want and will keep the first time :)

The 60Hz IPS in my GT72 couldn't do over 80fps, I lost the lottery there.

    Hi All,

Just had an update from MSI UK, they miscalculated the value of my laptop, they are now offering £1699 , instead of the £1259 they initially offered, this is more or less the price I paid for it, great news.

Now the problem, there is no GT73VR with 1070 GPU currently being offered which is an option I was thinking of taking, if not then I'd go with the cheapest GT72VR with 1070, which MSI UK are offering at £1899, now I am going through my Credit Card Company and should get a full refund, I'd then be able to buy the same laptop cheaper from a retailer and have the MSI Happy holiday GT gaming pack bundled in with it.

So it still makes no sense for me to make use of this upgrade program.

    Merry Christmas

For256 ssd, its still £80 and the same goes for 16GB memory, so its only £180 to £200 for the upgrade.
Buying parts your self dont cost much, unless you wait 6 months to a year and hope the prices come down,

Well I just emailed them to see if there is any diffrence between the two laotops besides memory and ssd space.

Thanks for the reply, has put my mind to rest, just one more question.

Is there anyother diffrence between, these two laptops, beside memory and ssd space.

Have you tried asking for a specific model? Maybe MSI can quote you on a base GT73 VR model with 1070?

There should be no difference. GT73 uses the same chipset and you have the same CPU on both, so difference will be to the SSD/RAM. Even the screen seems to be the same. It's kinda hard to determine full specs of each machine hahaha

Was told that they have sold out of the GT73VR with 1070 GPU but I could put a request in for one and when they are next released get pricing for that, was also told that the price should not be the same for the current GT73VR with 1070.

But I plan to sell my sons laptop privately and hopefully get a full refund via Credit Card Company then by the GT72VR with 1070 for my son, which is an upgrade on his GT72 2QD with GTX970m.
