According to what was originally sent me, a GT75 w/ RTX 2070 is going to be $1,299 as my GT73VR was given a $1,200 value.

So, back in 2017 I decided to opt into getting the GT83VR -- 3 Months after getting it I had to RMA the thing for weird 'powering' issues. After I RMA'd it, they diagnosed it as a motherboard issue.. They sent it back and I had to RMA it again when the GPU's wouldn't work properly.. Today my laptop started having powering issues again. I contacted the technical support line and they told me 'Oh well, it's a year out of warranty', after I explained that I've had to RMA this device twice, they said it's too bad and I would need to do everything out of pocket.
In total, I have had 4 RMA's done through MSI.. Once for faulty brackets, another to replace my laptop via the Upgrade Program, and then two more times for the laptop I received in return. For a machine that was roughly $4k I am now stuck going out of pocket for the things I had already replaced because it's 'out of warranty' after having it failed and being out of a machine for a sum total of 2 months in 2 years. This is absolutely ridiculous. I'm just letting other users know, and the service rep who spoke to me was completely unnecessarily callous and disregarding to my issue.. Cold and disinterested and literally said "I don't know why you're surprised, it doesn't matter how much it breaks, your warrant was only for the year after you registered it" with zero interest in making anything about MSI seem inviting. After 3 generations of laptops, this may be the last time I ever mess with an MSI device, and I'll make sure everyone is aware of how terrible this has been for me.tiliarou and Kevin@GenTechPC like this. -
Unfortunately that's typical from MSI... It's not because the warranty expired that it shouldn't be covered by them. For all we know, this could be a manufacturer defect or intrinsic design flaw which should be covered by the manufacturer regardless of the standard limited warranty. But MSI and the law is almost antinomic since they just tend to lie to their users...MiSJAH likes this.

The more I think about it, I might end up just asking for something like the new GE75 RAIDER-286. It's $1999 with an i7-9750H, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe, RTX 2070.
With the trade in that would be far enough below a grand that I could take it. Then maybe wait a couple years for the RTx 4000 series.
I'll wait and see what the email they send out says though. -

MSI trade in goes down for next generation release. So if they quote you for 8K series 9K series will be much lower. -
Eh they are almost the same CPU, I'd have no problem with taking the SKU the 8750H if it's cheaper.
There shouldn't be so many damn caveats at every turn of this though. I remember back when the program was promised to only cost whatever it would've been to upgrade the MXM GPU itself. Then they threw in laptop valuations and cosmetic damage deductions and all of this other ****. -
specialist7 Notebook Evangelist
Oh yeah i know what you mean, the 8750H and 9750H will actually perform similarly at the same clocks just the 9750H is clocked higher but subject to throttle with heat.
If battery life and heat is of concern the 8750H would be the better choice.
8750H
4.1GHz [1 Core]
4.0GHz [4 Cores]
3.9GHz [6 Cores]
9750H
4.5Ghz [1 Core]
4.2GHz [4 Cores]
4.0GHz [6 Cores]
I might consider with a lower GPU this time around since I put most of my gaming to my desktop anyway. I'll probably use the laptop more for VT/VM and testing.Last edited: Jul 31, 2019Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -

lmfao!!! SMH! they lied! point blank! if you read the whole thread MSI's solution is for all of us to buy new laptops. Just don't buy theirs lol

I have been communicating with Michelle Yu. The GT76 Titan DT-40 was in stock as of 07/31.
I let Michelle know I'm holding out for the GT76 Titan DT-039. She said they don't have inventory and was expecting inventory to be in by the end of September. -

I wouldn't be bothering to e-mail them for two reasons, the how bait switch and lies and second I am quite happy with my GTX 1060 mobile MXM upgrade that has the same TDP as it's desktop counter part. I was nearly trying to a question.
At the end of the day MSI lied, then used a bait and switch tactic to resolve the issue when the GT72 series be it 4th/5th/6th gen just required an Update to System bios and EC to support the cards in g-sync mode and to add the Device ID's to the Nvidia driver submission. Yes the GT80 would have been difficult as from my understanding it was using LVDS rather then EDP like on the GT72.
To top it all off MSI has a habit of making software exclusive to a set platform Nahimic 3 and Dragon Centre are prime examples, which is why I am modding the Nahimic drivers for everyone to be able to use regardless of model and Dragon center is only using the registry to see if a system is using 8th or 9th gen Intel CPU's.
So unfortunately for MSI they ended on my black list and my next system will be a Clevo.
Just check my signature for my valid 3dmark runs (that didn't envolved using a Egpu to get higher scores unlike others).
There is even a link to the latest Nahimic 3 drivers too, I only supporting what MSI ditched.

Hi, can we upgrade the MSI GT72 to a pascal gpu ? like a GTX1070 with "standard" mxm form factor ? or maybe a turing card like this one ?

You can upgrade to GTX1060 or GTX1070 MXM from MSI depending on which version you have i.e 4th 5th 6th gen will depend on how you got about the heatsink change or modding.
Here is me doing the upgrade on GT72-6QD
This should help you.
Please note if you do the upgrade you'll need to install modded drivers each time and steel series latest version will not work unless you temp flash the DMI area so that the GT72 goes back to GT72-xxx where is xxx is model.
Also bare in mind since that video was made I have TDP modded my GPU to desktop GTX1060 specs and haven't had an issue just look in my signature for results.
As for RTX or even the 1660/1660/1660ti I do not know as I don't have any cards in MXM format to test with nor the heatsink that would be required, most of them cards are also now BGA as well.

Never read anything about the temp DMI flash, could you explain a bit more in depth how is that done?

Okay thanks, do you know what is the max GPU TDP the GT72 board can handle ? I would like to try my Zotac GTX 1080 mxm (ouside of chassis).
I will get two board of haswell GT72 and one from broadwell -
hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
I wouldn't go for a GTX1080 MXM chances are you will end up having the system shutdown via EC. GTX1070 is the max your going to get working for sure I'd side with a max 150w total draw (peak) with a GTX1070 which is 115w TDP that will peak near 130w when pushed hard. My GTX1060 can hit that when benching with my 129w TDP vbios.Ya when you install a pascal card the GT72-xxx bit becomes just GT72, when installing steel series it looks now in the later version at the DMI for the model number and when it sees just GT72 it will not install everything thus the RGB will not work.
I temp flash the DMI before installing so when it goes to read said DMI it will show GT72-xxx (XXX is model number) thus it installs everything and the RGB works.after the reboot the DMI goes back to what it is due to dxe recovering the info and it returns back to GT72 but the RGB will still work as the one part of the driver is installed.

And can we modify the EC to increase the power capability of the mxm port ? Or the board is "hard locked" to 130w ?
-
Wow! great markdown $53913.09. does that go straight to the Taliban?
-
hatrix2006 is the man! he can help you out with the whole proccess. As for the 1070. I saw one floating around ebay for $430 us dollars I believe. You will need the proper heatsink though. There is a guy on here that might help you with that for a reasonable price. woodstock something or nother I think. maybe htrix2006 remebers who I'm talking about.hacktrix2006 likes this.

If you want to brick your mainboard sure edit the EC firmware as it will kill itself if the checksum fails. So no EC editing is to risky to do so. I have only gone far as 130w on MXM port which is my safety zone wouldn't risk it any further just remember we have only a 230w PSU to use. Just get a GTX1070 (not from a vortex system) slap it in. Install modded drivers and call it a day.

You know how to edit the EC firmware or do you have any link on how to modify it ? or the only thing we can do is to flash an other firmware from an other GT72 ?
I will not keep the entire GT72 around, just one board to try and/or diagnose MXM gpu, power supply will not be an issue for my setup.
And also if you wonder the aliexpress link is a RTX4000 from HP that have a similar size as MXM 3.0b cardKevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
I have not modded my EC firmware nor has greyghost it all runs fine. GTX1060 or GYX1070 will run fine without issues can not say about quadros as I don't use them or frankly care about them as I am a gamer, though in theory they should work so long as the TDP is with in 130w TDP after all our VRM's are ageing and are not effective as they used to be.
Also never cross flash GT72 BIOSes it's the quickest way to kill a motherboard. To keep it simple just stick to what has been tested and known to work which a GTX1060 and GTX1070 is known to work.

Well I e-mailed Michelle to see if any inventory has come in early. I'm going on vacation early October and was hoping to start the process of getting the trade in. She said no and it now looks like inventory isn't going to be until early October.
It's almost like they don't care about us that are waiting for their promised GPU upgrade.... -
The process with Ming last time was so much smoother and more fair. I'm being offered a $1600 trade in credit for my 1070 sli, 64gb ram, 512 nvme and fully clocked out on everything else. On top of that the prices they have in the list for some machines are $500 more than buying directly thru MSI on Amazon.
They are really trying to **** us this generations trade in. I can part out my laptop on ebay for $2k right now. $1600 with elevated prices for their trade in's is highway robbery.
To be fair, they tried to do this in the initial trade in program but at least Ming understood and would work with you. Michelle does not care one bit and will not budge. MSI has lost a customer over this one. Probably just going to part out my PC on ebay and go with a cleo or asus machine. -
Yea I hear you. I've already been looking at other brands but nothing is built like the GT76 Titan DT-40.
The price listed for that one matches what everybody is selling it for.
I haven't seen what my GTX80 2QE would go for on E-Bay yet. I will check now...
I checked. There were only a couple listed. They were going for only $50 more than the trade in value. No bids on any of them. So, for me not wanting to deal with the hassle of E-Bay'ing it, MSI's offer is the bestLast edited: Sep 26, 2019 -
Yeah, that was the original machine I traded in during the gtx10 generation. I can see how that trade in would be closer linked to what you can get on ebay. Mine is $700 more for the cheapest I can find on ebay. $1600 trade in or $2300 on ebay Which is a fairly substantial difference.
Last edited: Sep 26, 2019 -
For that difference I would e-bay it too.
I just hate being low man on the totem pole with them. My current laptop is the second MSI laptop. The first being a GT780. So it's not like I'm a first time buyer with them...Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
What laptops are more expensive than retail? At first glance I haven't seen any of that on the list I have, as they have been 1:1 when I cross-referenced. Any specific models you can point out?
-
specialist7 Notebook Evangelist
Apparently the value goes down after every release.
-> 6th -> 7th gen = trade in goes down
-> 7th -> 8th gen = trade in goes down
-> 10 series -> 20 series = trade in goes down
-> 8th -> 9th gen = trade in goes down
So the more you wait the lower the value. Something like the Titan-017 would have been $1,200 earlier in the year would be like $9xx when 20-series came out and $8xx when 9th gen came out YMMV. -
I'm heavily leaning toward the GE75 Raider-645. I can get it for basically $1500 and the RTX 2080 will let me sell it for that much next year.
It's a shame Intel has priced the i9-9880H so ridiculously expensive. +$900 for those SKUs is stupid. -
Let's compare.
Is this list I uploaded to my Google Drive, the same one everyone now has?

Good luck. I e-mailed her 4 days ago about starting the process of the 2nd trade-in and have yet to hear back.
-
Well... she got back to me right at the end of business this evening EST.
Says they have changed the MSRP on the GT76 DT-90/DT-91 since I got the list, they are now $2999 and $2499 respectively, and that I can do the same cross shipping option as last time if I so choose.
Also sent me a list of the GE75 SKUs and which are in stock. No 240Hz SKUs on the US market.
So now I'm in final decision between the GT76 DT-90 and GE75 Raider, which would cost $2046 and $1546 after trade value.Kevin@GenTechPC and twistedmr like this. -

Are you leaning toward the same route as what you have now (GT)? Or GE? Decisions decisions.
-
Anyone manage to complete the 2nd upgrade without issue?
-
I ended up with the GT76 in my sig.
-
I've got a gt73vr 6re titan is it possible to uprade a 2nd time?
Went from a gt72 dominator pro to gt73vr 6re titan.
To say a 2070? I think the max trade in would be 1500$ and whatever they would let me upgrade too.
Last time i sent the old one in then they emailed me the new one. -
You can do a 2nd upgrade, to any MSI laptop with 9th generation Intel CPU and Nvidia Turing (RTX 2000 and GTX 1600) series GPU. We were told that was the last series of laptops eligible, so no 10th gen Intel CPUs /RTX Super models. Allegedly.
Try emailing Michelle Yu, [email protected] and request that she send you the current pdf of what is available.
Please share what is sent so we all can see what is currently on offer. If they are offering the latest models I would like to know.
