GX 640 - Possibly dead in 4 days? Help ;/

Hey guys,

I just got a GX 640, been playing a bit on it and it just died, I think.

So heres what happend:
-Room temp 25ºc
-Was playing CoD MW for about 3 hours on my 42" tv, settings on UBER LOW because otherwise its unplayable on the TV
-No overclocks, nothing. Everything was set to max performance at power settings and note was on AC.
-CoD froze...
-I turned note off, checked to see if it was too hot (wasen't), waited a min, turned it on
-It loads the windows 7 logo thing, goes into black screen, HDD led blinks a bit then OFF completly, nothing happens, black screen forever.
-Safe mode works normally

What I did:
-complete os reinstall (via f3) = same issue
-waited hours, took the lid off, turned it on after it was cool = same issue
-system restore (before last change, which was installing spore...) = same issue

I just got a nc 3000...guess I wont need it =/

Anything else I can do? Thanks!

 

1st problem is, you shouldn't have to play on Uber-Low settings.(you should be able to play on max or close to it, size of your TV ain't gonna change things (rez is).

- install all proper drivers (video card driver); google what other settings people are playing at and if your not getting the same as them then you may have a problem.

 

Edit, since I did a F3 system OS reinstall, it wont enter safe mode now...and wont start normally to complete installation.

Dont use that preinstalled OS crap, i got rid of that partition long ago. Use a retail OS. Also have you updated the vbios?

 

ugh, you should be able to just system restore back to before the black screens, happened to me once and that's how I got back to normal. It's the powerplay issue creeping up again I'm pretty sure.

 

Yeah I guess I could try installing a fresh OS...will do that!
Vbios not updated...didn't mess with pretty much anything, just played some games.

Should I update? If so, to which version?

Hmm, how? The problem is that it says "loading windows" and then black screens.
Safe mode wont work since I re-installed via the pre installed OS thing

Powerplay is really more of a problem it seems hehe

 

the one on the msi mobile website, try that it might help with the black screen.

Okay this is what I did. on POST jam on the F8 to boot to recovery and just restore from a system restore point and you'll be all good.

And once you get your system back up set your powerplay to ALWAYS MAX PERFORMANCE

 

I still use the OS thats in the GX640 and it works fine.

I have a video on that game and on lots of other games that the GX640 can play.

Tried that, but didn't work.
And I reinstalled the entire OS and still it won't start...so that's making me wonder.

Still, I'll try booting with Windows 7 Live from USB and reinstalling another copy of Win 7 to test it.

I guess it plays maxed on SP..I'm playing MP though, and the game is really "heavy" on the gx 640. Even at mostly low settings sometimes it slows down a bit.

That dosent seem posible for the ATI 5850 card. There's something wrong with your gx640.

I know the other games I played also maxed out, are far more hardware demanding than cod4:mw2.

For the broblem:
I would make sure your drivers are updated from here:
MSI Global ? Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more

If thats not it, then ya, The vbios update should be it.
That's if the gpu it self is working fine...

 

Tomorrow I'll be home then I'll try the vbios update.
If that doesn't work, then another install of win 7 and/or win 7 live.

The video driver I'm using is the latest mobile driver cats found on official ati site, 10.something with ccc.

Maybe something is messed up though...since it worked for a few days and then it died.

Use cats 10.6 and update the vbios. If problem still persists report back
Also dont expect this to max out everything, it is only as powerful as a 5770 (which is still pretty damn good).

 

Theres too much crap on there that i cbf uninstalling I usually like to give it a fresh install so i know whats on my OS.

 

I use cats 10.8 and its also fine lol!

OC the GX640 to 800/1000 to get the desktop ATI 5770, but not at stock.

 

haha really? 10.8 is a ***** to me
g4mer1337 what voltages do u need to get an OC of 800/1000. I cant get it stable at 1.0 and 1.05v. Only 1.1v will make it stable but it runs a LOT hotter than 1.05v

 

It's 1.15v when I game.
It not hot enough then lol!

Edit: vbios update didnt do it, but I DLed and installed a Win 7 ultimate and now its working normally...at least it doesnt seem like a hardware issue.

I was getting 12k on 3d mark vantage, Im gonna install everything again and see if it survives another week!lol

Back in the old days when i had a E8400 clocked at 4.2 and a gtx 285 i just managed to get 12.5k?

Edit: When I stalled windows 7 it didn't pick up the 5850. On Everest it shows up fine.
I installed the video drivers on MSI website, then when I restarted to finish installation the screen keeps flashing black and normal (with a mouse cursor) and that's it.
I guess my vga died, !

Next time I'm buying asus...

 

yea thats about right lol... at stock the gx640 should only get around 7k ish. I OC'd myn to hell and back and I got 8.6k (performance). Although benchies dnt mean much unless u want to feed ur . Mate y use drivers from msi website? They are old as, get them straight from ATi, 10.8 should do but if you fins that its unstable roll back to 10.5 or 10.6

EDIT: With new drivers you should get a nice little performance increase

 

mmm i know how u feel although there is absolutely no need to put down to low however When in one of those snowy maps my average fps falls dwn to like 35-40fps and its annoying, i just cant stand stand kind of fps in a multiplayer game. Then there are those annoying moments where an apache and tank scrap it out and the dust particles really start chocking the cpu cause of the phsyics involved. But usually i only dip for a few seconds so its not too bad. In some maps i loewr dwn to medium to get a constant 50fps cause i like my games smooth

 

Yeah I like games smooth too, SPECIALLY online...any slowdown and you die hehe.

My NC 3000 arrived..but sadly I'm sending it to RMA tomorrow.

Everytime I install video driver it does the boot glitch, so the VGA must have died..

Hmm...but it takes so much hardware to get a 60fps from a good 30fps, when the difference is small. From everyone I know...they would not complain with a 30fps. =D

Maybe its just me? I dnt no i just cant stand 30fps in multiplayer, however i can handle 25fps in single player easily. Also the reason i like my average fps around 50 is because i hate the dips, its kind of annoying when ur in an intense situation and suddenly u dip to 20-30fps and u die, it gets a bit annoying ;/

I think its the small internet lag thats in most games. More so in cod4 but even in bf:bc2.

ex:
I noticed that sometimes in bf:bc2 you like die after you reached cover(shooter has no line of site). I hate that.

And in cod:4 and the rest of there games...
-You use a whole clip before he dies(drops) and it only should take like 1/4 clip.
-You shoot at someone thats moving fast and it doesnt seem to hit them. (with snipers to)

 

Thats y in cod4 the m16 is so op. 1 burst is enuf to kill them if aimed propely.

I dont think I'll ever play cod mp again. I played to much of the cod4 and the others feel the same!

NC 3000 is AWESOME on the other hand, now I got more USB's!! The only thing GX 640 really lacks. Well it could have USB 3.0 but anyways...
And the aluminum thingie is gets really cold.

Did you know the GX640 has 3 USB's?
The E-Sata is a USB combo.

I think E-Sata > USB 3, because more things use E-Sata than USB 3.
