I got my laptop since a day.

I was trying to update drivers etc, i came with the latest Catalyst driver 10.4 from Ati website. I was hoping it fixes the problem of when you close the lid the screen goes black and doesnt open again. still have the problem.

But when i started the installation, there was an option to uninstall all the drivers, and I DID that, And then installed the new driver.

But when i restarted the laptop, i was looking for the catalyst control panel both in system tray and when you click on right click mouse, but it just dissppeard.

How can i recover that, it might have something related to vbios. i tried to install the newest copy from msi website but the file said its only vaild on 32 bit windows, i have windows 7 64 bit.

    I have few other questions:

1- What is power play and how can turn it off and on.

2- I heard you can swich the FN/LCTRL keys by registry but dont know exatly how you do that. and can you rip the buttons too and swich it.

3- There is a problem with my Google Chrome, The text is soo small, i know about the Ctrl+ and text and font size, but that doesnt work on some sites. With IE8 the text/size of the sites is good.

    Thanks

If there isn't a BIOS option to swap the Fn and LCtrl keys, then it can't be done (from what I've seen/understand). If you just swap the physical buttons, then that's all that gets swapped. The functionality would stay the same.

    Yess,

I actually downloaded the catalyst suit from MSI.com under gx640 drivers.

So i noticed the size difference between this one and that one, so i downloaded this one and uninstalled the previous ones, and installed yours, and it worked. the catalyst control panel is there again.

Good i got rid of that problem. now the remaining problems are 2.

The Ctrl/Fn problem. i heard somewhere in the owner loung of this msi that few people swiched the keys by doing something to registry, i dont know exatly what they did, may be some one can share it. As the the physical buttons, how should i remove them, just rip it with power or something like that. i dont want to break my 2 days old laptop, but this problem is the most annyoing problem in this laptop, with my previous laptop, i was using ctrl in like everything. now that causes alot of problems, its the location of the button, i my finger always looks for last button in that corner (which is suppose to be ctrl button) lol.

The other problem is the Size of the text and sites in google chrome, i really like that browser, i am using it since the day it was intruduced, its fast and easy. now i am using IE8 temperarory and i dont like it at all.
The problem with the browser is that the text and the blocks in the site are way smaller then normal, very very hard to read.

You can check what i mean by visiting for example this site with both browsers if you have them: Football News, Football Scores, Football Transfers, Transfer News, Transfer Rumours, Premier League News, World Cup 2010 News - Goal.com

I can change the GDP in control panel from 125% to 150%, but that make it way way way big. i used the customed size like 135 but nothing works.

    EDIT:
I read firefox instead of chrome, my mistake.
I've never had anything like this in Chrome.
Delete everything, even settings, regedit, etc..

    Reinstall Chrome?

Like I said ealrier about the Fn button swapping...it can't be done without a BIOS setting/hack. When you press the Fn button on your keyboard, it doesn't actually register as a key press to the OS. Instead, when you hold the Fn button down, the keyboard hardware waits for you to press another key before doing anything. It then sends the resulting key code to the OS.

For example, pressing Fn + Up on my keyboard increases the brightness on my screeen. If you open up just about any key binding/mapping program, it will allow you to press a key and see that key's key code. You will notice that if you press the Fn key, nothing happens. However, if you press Fn + Up, for example, the program will then register a key press.

You can stop using the LCtrl key and set your in-game controls accordingly, however. This was almost a deal-breaker for me, but aparantly many people get used to it rather quickly. I'm ordering as soon as school's out :)

I would'nt give a rat's rear end about the button placement.
Play your games > 20 times, and get used to it, and thats it.

    ELSE...buttonswap :)

I had two more problems today.

1- I started a scan, cleanup, and slept on it, after i woke up, i checked the laptop and it was fine. but after that when i ate breakfast and came back, the laptop was shutdown by itself(may be cuz there was no charge in it). But when i started the laptop. The screen just went black just before the Username/password place. I restarted and did that recovery thing, but that didnt work, then did the F8 thing and Last known good Settings and it worked. Just wanted to know is this one time problem or It is a serious problem.

2- The second problem, i cant update my Bios and Vbios that are avaliable in MSI website.

It says that it works on 32bit.a

I have windows 7 64bit the defoult one that came with laptop.

As for Google Chrome problem, i will reinstall and try.

Dude just enjoy the lappie. why would you want to update your bios ? You already got the latest one installed anyway. And bios/firmwares can only be updated through DOS.

If it ain't broken , don't fix it.

I was hoping it decreases the temperature. And increases performance somehow.

    Anyway.

And i think i found out my chrome problem, somehow when u increase ur DPI from control panel, no matter how much u increase it, it doesnt get increased in Google Chrome content.

Means if i did 200% DPI, the text size remains the same in Chrome.

Bummer, how do u fix this.

Well i dont have any big games now, just COD World at war. I was worried about the temperature a bit, i mean a 5minutes ago, i checked the temperature and it was around 97'C and then fan started and i checked again and it was 71'C.

I dont know how to check the FPS etc. and I put the lap on Power savor mode and increased brightness to full.

OH and i did the compability thing, there was no difference.

ok, now i am in huge problem, i put laptop to sleep, and when it waked up, it was black screen again, i had put my finger on power button for few seconds to close the lap, and restart it, and then after i started it again, it had the same problem, after showing Windows logo it goes to black screen. The lights near the power are off and not blinking. only the power button has the light on.

I tried every thing to fix it, did windows recovery thing, did system restore, both didnt worked. and then i opened it in safe mode and it got opened finally, but what should i do now.

I am seriously freaking out. damn, 2 days and its full of bugs.

Well, i did system restore again, but this time way back, cust me 3 hrs of installing applications and games.

Glad to see my laptop open again, i was about to have a heart attack.

Any way, what does power play do, does it increase performance or something, didnt any one notify ATI about this problem.

Another good news, somehow my finger now is getting used to ctrl and fn keys lol.

Now the only thing that annoys me is google chrome, the text is soo small i have push ctrl+ button, anyway, i will download IE8 again. Since that browser was the only one showing correct size text.

Both Firefox and Chrome are showing small Websites(and text).

I think you might just be finding it small right now because you're used to a lower resolution screen? IE is the only browser that zooms based on percentages, which firfox and chrome measure things in pixels

Maxhorn3, never heard of it, i will try it.

But the thing that confuses me, HOW come i have this problem while you guys dont, i mean i bought it from same place US(kinda same). Didnt messed with up that much. Yet only i have small text.

Guys can you tell me what settings you guys use in you control panel, is it 125% DPI or 150, and what different sittings you guys use in you chrome.

I really dont if this is required to be said, but Maxthon 3 is Chinese web browser(It is developed in China, otherwise as good as any).

As far is chrome is concerned, I think I havent even changed any setting but I guess I know your problem. Did you mess up with the fonts and size?

Its in Options>Under the Hood>Web content(Its on that page, not a tab)> Font and Language settings.

Make sure you did not select some weird font, coz I once was playing with it and I screwed all my internet experience.

I have another question, Is the screen fully HD, i mean this didnt happened to me in my crappy old laptop.

When ever i play a video, in a second it seems like you can notice the dots in the person's face, but in another second its not there anymore its like you did photoshop brush on it and all dots become clean or something like that.

This also happens to me when playing Big games etc.

Is this releated to settings or something like that.

Let me tell you if these are the screenies you have been talking about then its high time to know that websites are designed as "one size fits all". This means depending on the kind of viewers the website is aimed at the best res might range from : 640X800 to 1280X1024. So our "widescreen" laptops dont get "best-fit" look.

Though this forum, fits perfectly on mine.
For conformation, I too did go to Football News, Football Scores, Football Transfers, Transfer News, Transfer Rumours, Premier League News, World Cup 2010 News - Goal.com and it looks just as it looks in your screenie.

And I dont know why but I feel you are either trying very hard to make your notebook look broken, or either you are too excited and are trying to do too much of experimenting.

I got that. lets leave that issue, i am getting used to IE.

Lol why would i do that, i not making it broken, nor expermenting, i am just doing my usuall stuff and there are problems in alot of stuff.

Its not that, i am talking about video/game qualitiy, i mean when you are watching a movie for example, you are in 12.05 minute/second. you look at the person face and you can see it soo clear, even dots in his face shows up, but move the video one sec above to 12.06, the clearness goes away.

I also have new BIG problem, i know i know, i am having problems etc, but this one seems big.

Yesteraday i was doing nothing, just opened a IE page and looked at the temperature, i was shocked, i took a picture, look at this:

My CPU temperature is around 50's while Core temperature in 40's.

BUT MY GPU TEMPERATURE WENT UP SUDDENLY TO 110'c. The fan was fast, and after few seconds, the computer auto shut down.

Just look at the pic, http://i43.tinypic.com/im5wgm.png
How on earth this could happen, i mean i wasnt even playing games, what would make GPU temp go up suddenly this high, it seems to be fine now.

Hmm interesting, that normally "Doesnt" happen,

    So its either

1)Blocked vents and intake - clean me pl0x
2)The main heatsink isn't attached properly
3)The fools didn't put the thermal pads on properly,
4)Completely redo the thermal paste on the GPU
    5)Live long and prosper!

As you said it's fine now

    EDIT : too slow :p

Nope, i put it wide open like i always do, there was nothing blocking the back side.

About vents, intakes, heatsink, lol sorry for being a bit stupid, cuz i dont know which parts those are and where they are located. how do i check if those stuff are connected properly.

Anyway, i am really worried about the temperature, the CPU idle is about 55-65'C while GPU temperature is around 60-70'C.

Do i need a cooler or something to make this a bit cooler. When i ordered, i didnt made any aditions when i bought this lap, damn, i should have made the thermal thing.

Bear in mind airflow is needed on the bottom, your machines GPU is centered and bleeding heat off through the HS and open gaps in the bottom too,

Sorry is this a new laptop, and what laptop is it? I've neglected to find this out.

Whoa!! 108*C, My goodness, newer 5xxx series are supposed to be cooler than our 4xxx series, and even I have never ever hit that high even though the room temps are around 35*C.
And if its brand new, RMA it.

Well, in movies that's typically the result of compression artifacts. You see them a lot more in movie encodes with lower bitrates.

However, since you're having troubles like you said with GPU temperatures, it's probably your GPU that is causing most of your issues. If so, it's in its dying throes, and getting a replacement from MSI should fix everything.
