Still very impressive p18.4k vantage score :D , shame the MSI notebook CPU can't be overclocked like the alienware boys i know you can gain 4-5% by running XMp ram profiles and amending clock frq's to say 104, just a shame that using an extreme model processor will not benefit the MSI laptop otherwise you could be seeing same much higher scores. P18.4k is very respectable matey and well done

It seems your CPU is throttling a little bit, check what is your CPU score for different GPU clocks (stock, o/c and very high o/c), your 180w is struggling to give full power for 2920XM and GTX580M..
And I advise you to play BF3 with lower clocks as it is a very demanding game (more than vantage for sure) and my power supply struggles when I am playing 800/900 so I assume yours too. Still waiting for my power supply though..

Hm looks strange, you only get 20K CPU score which is similar to mine..You should perform over 21.5K normally with 2920xm=2860qm..

Try to run @ stock clocks to check your CPU score, I think you had over 21K CPU If I remember well, perhaps I am wrong.

Anyway memory clocks boost quite a lot Vantage score while 3dmark score doesnt change at all.

Have you tried higher core clocks under Vantage ? (and perhaps lower mem)

While playing BF3, run MSI Afterburner and check your GPU is always 98% used as my usage dropped a little bit when playin BF3 @ 800/900

I think I had over 21,000 when I used the ICC overclock.

However, my CPU is an ES 2920XM, so its stock clock is 2.4GHz instead of 2.5GHz. So without taking advantage of the unlocked multipliers, 2860QM>2920XM (OEM/QS)>2920XM (ES).

I just did another Vantage run with an ICC overclock:
Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Genuine Intel(R) CPU 0 @ 2.40GHz,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16F2 score: P19025 3DMarks

A while ago, I ran vantage at 840MHz with the memory lowered to 1840MHz:
Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Genuine Intel(R) CPU 0 @ 2.40GHz,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16F2 score: P18278 3DMarks

But even at 1840MHz, it seemed I couldn't take the core higher.

For BF3, I lowered the memory clock to 1900MHz, because the first time I tried it at 1970MHz, it crashed after about twenty minutes or so.

Yep memory helps quite a lot in Vantage:
    http://3dmark.com/3dmv/3859410

I am scared to try over 820 core under Vantage as last time the adapter crashed

FYI Tried BF3 solo quickly to see the wattage pulled by the laptop with 825/1950 (seem stable) and it was about 210W constantly from the wall so must be 190W to the laptop...It might be a bit overkill for the adapter :p

Good to see people pushing the 580m. If you want to see what can be done check the Vantage run in sig :)

Does anyone have a picture of the other side of the mobo? can anyone get hold of a circuit diagram for this board? anyone got an awesome contact with MSI whom can find the information for us
    Cheers

Ken, many thanks for the info so would appear it's just bad soldering, doesn't look like any of the PCB holes are connected to any cirrcuit either so they prob just used the area to be safe with the solder :D

You've moved to a different weight class now though.

That's like comparing s super heavy weight to a middleweight....

All in all, I enjoyed the MSI and would definitely be a top choice. I just found a refurbished with a year warranty (and upgradable, which I like), got a good offer on my MSI and knew I could not afford a new 4500 M18x (refurbish was half that), so I jumped on the opportunity.

Wished MSI would make the warranty transferable, make the resell a little easier.

All right, just upgraded my no-name 4 DIMMS 1333 to 8GB HyperX PnP 1600. I didn't expect any improvement in game but got them for a good price so just thought it was worth trying them.
Benchmark speaking, gave me some improvement as well as boosting my CPU:

No I think I'm done with my msi16f2.

    No problem. :)

i de-soldered it just to see what's in there and found nothing but a PCB hole:
