Hello all,
I recently got my laptop back after sending it to MSI for a RMA. My GS60 2QE was working fine until today.
The battery icon showed full charge so I unplugged my laptop and proceeded to watch my show. Few mins passes by and then the screen goes black, my laptop made three beeping noise and automatically shut off. I pushed the power button but wouldn't turn on, plugged in the charger and pushed the power button, on it goes. On start up the battery icon showed full charge, I unplugged the charger and continued to watch my show. Few mins and my screen goes black again, but this time my laptop didn't make the three beeps, instead it made some weird techy noise that i can't describe, then it shut off. Same issue occurs, unplugged laptop wont start, plugged laptop back on its foot. This time my battery icon showed 0% "calculating" but ended up not calculating. I restarted my laptop few more times with my charger plugged in, and it constantly displayed battery at 0% "calculating". I unplugged the charger and restarted my laptop, this time shows 100%. I continued to watch my show to see how long my laptop will last with it being unplugged. It lasted for about 15mins before screen went black, three beeps and turns off. My battery icon showed 100% during that 15mins, remaining hour went up and down between 2hr-1hr45min. Now I have it back on charger and it is still showing 0% "calculating".
My question: Would the MSI battery calibration help solve this issue? or is it something that I would have to ask for a RMA again?
sorry for my post to be lengthy, wanted to make sure i didn't leave out any info. As always thanks for your help.
edit: I tried letting my laptop charge to see if it will hold up charge. The charging indicator started to flash red. battery icon shows 0% and says (not charging). unplugged laptop then automatically shuts down. I turned it back on and now it says 100% battery, but the indicator is still flashing red light with and without charger.

Hey Stock, my keyboard has issues too. The first 5 rows starting from the screen are perfect and uniform in color, the row closest to the trackpad have several keys, like the ctrl key and spacebar and enter key, that have errant lcds. when the color should be a light white they are green or purple. And like yours, the CTRL key especially is very bright..
Anyone else with this issue? worth having it looked at? I still have my previous laptop so being without for a couple weeks wont kill me, and the service centre for MSI is in my city luckily
-
Yep. All MSI GS60 have this, sadly. So there is nothing you would gain by sending it for repair / trying getting a new unit.
-
OK thx for that aqnb... I guess you always want your notebook to be perfect. colors equal like on a macbookpro or my old alienware. But then my old alienware had so many other crazy problems that it makes the LED light issue pretty minor.

Hi everyone ! I just got an gs60 2pe too, and this thread was very useful !
However, I updated my EC firmware to the latest, (507), and I didn't find anyone here that might have made a custom EC with a quiet (passive) mode for low temperatures. Does anyone have such a firmware ? I'm looking for passive mode up until 60° or so for the CPU. Thank you !
westcoastgeek, it's the same here, the enter key on the keypad is a tad bit more green for me, and F4 to F8 keys are almost not illuminated .. -

I'm not aware of any custom EC with this goal in mind, but maybe the passive cooling policy in the Windows power options will help(?). Passive mode slows CPU speed to mitigate heat before increasing fan speed (active increases fan speed first). -
I just got Svet's tool from donation, and I created my custom EC firmware, works like a charm ! 0% fan speed set until the CPU reaches 55°, perfect and silent with light duty work. I also disassembled the laptop, cleaned the fans (loooots of dust accumulated, it almost made a 3-4mm dust wall between the fan and the fins !), and repasted using Gelid Extreme, now burn in temps are around 82-83°C. ( I also have -75mV on the CPU which must help).
Before, and whatever windows policy, it would never go passive, because there was always a minimum fan speed set from 0°C for the CPU.
Anyways thanks for your help

Nice! It's a good thing you gave it a little TLC. Bringing the temps down will help with longevity. -
Hi,
I have some problems that I would like to share. I bought my gs60 in October 2015 and it had an assembly problem in the screen, sometimes it made a click noise when the screen side was pressed and I had it replaced. My new gs60 was perfect until I tried to use my touchpad, the touchpad get stuck sometimes when I press the right click. Does anyone have a similar problem?
I would like to repair it but they ask for 30 days to do it and it is my only pc and I use it to do home office. I am really disappointed since it is a 2500 CAD notebook and I had two until now and both came with assembly problems. -

Have you tried updating BIOS, EC firmware, and touchpad driver? Since the issue could be related to any of those, or all. -
Actually it get physically stuck, it looks like when you click it get stuck in the click and when this happen I need to press the click on touchpad several times until I came back to normal.
-

I understand. You can remove the driver completely, reboot the system and test with it again.
But both BIOS & EC have effect on touchpad too. -
Hello !
I just bought my GS60, but I have micro-freezes in game (Skyrim, CS:GO). I updated my drivers.
I can't find any solution on the internet.
Hope you can help
-
Have you tried running HWmonitor while gaming to see if it keep shappening? I ask because sometimes the HDD is causing the freezing/sutter, because it goes to sleep/spins down and then back up, causing that freeze.
also, the Killer Network drivers are known to cause issues with older drivers. I would advice to update them and then close the Killer Network Manager and try gaming like that. -
Thanks for your answer
My game (Skyrim) is installed on my SSD (I also tried it on my HDD but same result). I'll install HWmonitorLast edited: Apr 23, 2016 -
Same result
I also killed Killer Network.
-
Download HWmonitor, Intel XTU, MSI Afterburner and monitor CPU and GPU Clockspeeds, temperatures and % Utilization when gaming. Maybe the GPU or CPU is throttling?
-
I'll run stress tests but a GTX970m should run Skyrim
-
What s the solution if my GPU / CPU are throttling ?
-
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Re-pasting the thermal compound on CPU and GPU might help. Some times notebook coolers can be useful as well, to help with airflow. -
It's annonying I Just bought it...
-
My GPU doesn't go over 65 C. Maybe it's the drivers ?
-
Could be the drivers, but you need to find out how much % of your CPU and GPU are being used and what speed they are running at. Skyrim is not hard to run on your system unless you add a ton of mods, but your issue is different.

Which drivers are you using? -

Can you run 3DMark benchmark and provide the score?
How about BIOS & EC? Did you update them to the latest? -
I answered in the other thread.
Thank you guys for your help, really appreciated !Last edited: Apr 26, 2016 -
I'm considering this laptop now since my 13" rmbp was stolen from me few weeks ago. Mac was an enjoyable experience but I do miss gaming.
First off is there any wide spread problems or issues with this laptop? I was actually considering the Xps 15 as well but the problems reported by users are putting me off.
Next is whether I should go for the 4k screen or the 1080p? I do a lot of photo editing and enjoy some occasional gaming so I reckon the 4k screen would be better, but I'll have to scale down to 1080p for gaming obviously. Will the scaling look obvious or bad? Or will the 1080p screen be good enough for both of my usage? I'm having the dilemma now because coming from the mbp's retina screen I'm not sure whether I would like the 1080p screen at 15". -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Don't go with 4K unless you really need that resolution for your work but the color is somewhat yellowish, choose panel that supports G-sync for best gaming experience. -
How bad was the yellowish issue? I thought they solved it with the latest refresh since the 4K panel now supports 60hz, so I assumed they changed to a diff panel. This is just based on my short reading online.

Hi guys, I just got this beautiful laptop just now and I am very happy with it. However, I've noticed that the cpu fan is always on? I checked dragon gaming centre and between 30-37 degrees the rpm is around 2.5k-2.9k is this normal? if its not, are there any suggestions?
-
Prostar Computer Company Representative
Low RPMs are normal in that temp range. Do you find the fan is a little excessively loud? -
ah I see. Yes they are loud, is that normal, even though im on green mode and using 6% cpu? Since the fans are constantly on at 2.6-2.9k rpm at 32-37 degrees.
Also Ive been playing csgo and Im somehow only getting around 90-115 fps on low! this doesnt seem normal, videos ive seen on youtube with the same laptop get around 200+fps. I'm also getting stutter lags now and then which is weird. Anyone know what is up?
Yes i was running on sports mode and Ive made sure ive updated my drivers and definitely made sure the game was running on the gtx 970mLast edited: May 19, 2016 -
Okay, so after repasting, trying various different combinations of settings in nvidia inspector, and now testing all of Sen7inel's vbios', I'm at my wits end with all this throttling!
All the vbios flashes I've tried only result in freezing and crashing of the nvidia driver. The idea of undervolting the 870m to keep temperatures down is my last gasp before I finally give up, but none of the roms have worked. The vbios version I'm using is 80.04.EF.00.21 (there's a -75mhz bios somewhere in this thread for this version, but it caused crashes just like the ones Sen7inel posted). Any ideas on how I might solve this problem? -

Hello, I own a 2014 GS60 Ghost GTX860M. I'm wondering how I can get a battery replacement. the current one is swelling, so I'm afraid this will create a bigger problem in the foreseable future
-
You can get one directly from MSI, however it will take 4-6 weeks since they first have to ship it from Taiwan, to their center (Canada I believe) and then to you.Last edited: Jun 8, 2016

GS60 Ghostpro-064 15.6" GTX970M 6G, ssd RAID 0+ ssd
Greetings, I got my pc last year and just now have had time to get it going.
** I'm getting lines and black/white flashing randomly on the screen. It does it significantly more on the internet than stand alone, although it still flashes somewhat.
It's not real bad, but for a $2500 laptop, it sucks. Will video driver and/or bios fix it? I wish I had never got it if this is as good as it gets. This was supposed to be the reliable fast one - ??
TIA! -
Anyone has the 504 firmware? I can't seem to download it via old links.
-
GS 2QE-606 i7-5700HQ owner here.
I was wondering if it's okay to update my BIOS to "E16H5IMS.111" as it's stated here, because my system BIOS is "E16H5IMS.504" and it's not the "1XX" format.
Thanks! -
I wouldn't dare take a chance. Mine has never worked right from the dealer and flashes every couple of seconds on the net. I'm supposed to put another 100 hours in trying to fix it first. So far, it's been $2500 and about 6 man weeks wasted time. Good luck.

I love the 4k for photo editing although it does take a bit to get used to the orangish mustard yellow hues. Scaling games is no biggie things look fine. You will have to always be tweaking things. Some.menus for Adobe go super small.onna 4k machine. It's getting better but I need reading glasses to make everything out clearly... but damn that screen is sharp.

My LCD screen seems to be dead, whenever I power on the laptop only the blue power light comes on along with the keyboard/fans but not the screen (the dragon logo light doesn't come on either). I also tried connecting it to an external monitor but it just says no signal detected. The 2 yr warranty on the laptop ends tomorrow, does that cover a dead LCD screen or will MSI charge me a fee to have it fixed?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
2-year based on the SN or date of purchase?
Show them receipt to have it covered, but they may still let you have it if it's just a few days past warranty. -
I believe its based on date of purchase (purchased mid June 2014). I've gone ahead and filled out request form for rma and while filling it out it listed my warranty good until Sept 6th.
-
All is well now. I shipped it out Tuesday and they received it on Thursday. I didn't know they would get it out so fast as they shipped it back out the following day. Also seems they replaced my battery as well since the older one began to get bloated.

Hi!!!
I recently bought the laptop MSI GS60 6QE (Skylake version). It has Windows 10 pre-installation included as factory settings.
However, I bought this laptop for using it with Windows 7, as my job demands to use this OS. When trying to install Windows 7 from a booteable USB pen drive in BIOS LEGACY mode, Windows 7 does not recognise the USB or SSD. Windows 7 installation is pending for some drivers which I do not know where they are and how to obtain them. Apparently, the USB 3.0 ports stop working (USB mouse seems disconnected). Hence, the OS installation cannot continue due to Windows 7 missing some drivers.
The main issue is that this laptop does not have an CD/DVD optical drive and all their USB ports are 3.0 and 3.1 C - Thunderbolt 3. This means that the only way to install Windows 7 is through USB port.
Therefore, I am writing to kindly ask any of you for technical support. How can I install Windows 7 for this specific MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 6QE skylake model? Did anyone manage to accomplish it?
Here are the most relevant details of the laptop:

Despite I did not receive any help from these forums, I'm glad to post the final solution for future users suffering the same pain.
Let me explain you how I sorted out the way to solve it. Unfortunately, none of the previous posted solutions across the internet managed to work in my laptop, which is hard to understand. Here are the steps I followed:
1) Download this Windows 7 ISO ( http://www.mantis.es/noticias/Win7SP1-Update-EN). It has all the necessary drivers included in order to being able to successfully install Windows 7 in a Skylake laptop.
2) Create USB Installation Media as explained in previous link through Windows USB/DVD Download Tool.
3) Restart, introduce bootable USB from step 2 and configure BIOS at MSI start (Delete key) as follows:
- Boot mode: UEFI CSM
- Fast Boot: Enabled
- Change boot device order; 1rst Boot: UEFI USB with W7… etc
- Secure Boot: Disable
- USB Configuration: Enable XHCI support (just in case)
- Press F10/Save and Exit
4) After rebooting, Windows 7 installation starts to load (in case it didn’t, press F11 at the beginning and select the USB drive).
5) Press “Install now” within W7 installation and afterwards, you will see the “Select partition to install W7” menu (IMPORTANT: this is the step where I was blocked previously, the reason I asked for assistance).
6) Installation progresses, maybe a bit slow as many drivers are loaded (it is not blocked despite it looks like). As soon as it reaches the last step “Finishing installation”, it will reboot after a while.
7) Remove USB driver or you’ll come back to step 5.
8) Installation proceeds, it returns to the same step “Finishing installation”. Suddenly, the screen resolution will be adjusted to your default one (1920x1080).
9) Wait around 3-5 minutes, when there is no more disk LED activity. As you may have realised, the installation seems to be running but it is actually blocked (it happened to me at least twice; NOTE: in case installation worked for you as normal, you can ignore the following steps and explanations, so congrats!). If so, you will be forced to press the on/off button until the laptop shuts down completely. After restarting the laptop, select “Initiate W7 normally” but you will face an error message saying that the Windows 7 installation could not be successfully accomplished…
10) Here is the solution to this weird situation ( http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...pectedly/b770f14d-e345-e011-90b6-1cc1de79d2e2 ):
J0seph Red:
- “On the same error screen press SHIFT+F10 and it will open up a black Window. (a command prompt window)
- In the black windows type the word "regedit"(without the inverted commas and hit enter. That will open the registry editor.
In the Registry Editor..
Browse to....
HKLocal machine/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion, and after highliting childcompletion,on the right hand side check for setup.exe. if the value is 1 change it to 3.(by double clicking on setup.exe and changing the value shown in the box).
Then close the registry editor and then also close the black window.
Then click on OK for the error and the computer will restart and the installation may complete. just try it and let me know if it worked.”
Well, I can assure you that it worked for me
11) After checking some video performance, Windows 7 will ask you for your User, Password and so on, which means you finally got Windows 7 installed as well after all this hassle!!!
12) W7 starts the session with your new user.
13) VERY IMPORTANT: As soon as you see the desktop for the first time, you MUST shut down/restart in order to let all the drivers from this ISO install correctly (the ones specified in their website). If you install your MSI drivers without restarting the laptop, they may be overridden (possible drivers mess).
14) After restarting, a message will appear on the bottom-right saying “New hardware is being installed” (those ISO drivers). When it is finished, restart once again and now, you are finally free to install whatever you want, even to uninstall the drivers and updates included within the ISO. YEAAAAAAAH!!!
To conclude, I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks to Microsoft and Intel for complicating this simple operation and wasting our time in attempting to impose users their incompetence: whatever it takes to stay with Windows 10... Since when did we lose our right to use our bought software/hardware as we wish? Honestly, the more you both try to impose us your faulty hardware and software, the more ingenious and genuine alternatives users will bring to circumvent your stupidity. Cheers!!!
P.S: I cannot stress enough how grateful I am to “Mantis Informática”, the company which freely uploaded the Windows 7 ISO with all the necessary drivers included, and to J0seph Red for his solution. -
Hi all
Can anyone confirm the presents or lack of PWM flickering on the full hd screen ?
thank you! -
I have had no flickering on mine.
