Hello I'm new here and have just received my GS60 Ghost Pro and am wondering about the warranty/return policy.

I did not order this laptop with the 1TB 7200 RPM HDD because I have one already I was going to use. Last night I installed it. Because I had to remove the 1 screw underneath the MSI Warranty sticker it's now considered void?

Amazing how did you alter the Bios?? I was looking into a custom VBios @ https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=148273.1000 I'll be ordering my Pro as soon as the x2 128GB SSD version is available in the UK.
What sort of temps are you getting at -75mV?? I'm hoping with that and some Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra it'll bring the temps below the 90C and stop any potential throttling. What clocks does the 870m run at without turbo I'd rather keep the 941Mhz turbo and just undervolt.

Thank you, and congrats on your purchase! :) and, no, I haven't tried undervolting, repasting did help a lot though, as I'm yet to see my laptop hit 90 degrees after the procedure :)

Thank you man! I love my gamer 7! It still runs most games maxed out, though I have to lower the res. to 720p to play some of them :p but it's a rock solid system, with a superb screen and I still use it to watch Blu-ray movies! :)

The 870M runs at 941MHz and turbos to 967MHz :)

Let me share my experience with coolaboratory ultra, to date, I haven't found a more efficient TIM, and I was using it on all my rigs, but the big problem with it is that the Gallium base will evaporate over time, leading to two unfortunate results, first, if you don't use all of it, whatever is left in the syringe will solidify after about a year, I had to throw half a syringe of the thing as it was dried up even though it was tightly sealed.

Second and most important, it tends to bond your heatsink to the CPU or GPU after the base evaporates, almost soldering it to the copper, I have almost broken a couple of sockets and all almost shattered a few dies trying to separate the heatsink after a few months of use :( not for the faint of heart :p

I have used it on my W110er and its amazing. Dropped peak temps by around 10C compared to the old TIM. Would the GS60 need a repaste once its got Coollaboratory on? Can't you just put it on and forget about it?

No, I don't think it'll need a repaste after that, and it might actually be more efficient than any other paste out there, just remember to use whatever is left in the syringe before it dries up :p

Where did you get the modified vbios ? How have you determine the amount of voltage that allows the boot of the system. In other words if you reduce top much the GPU voltage does it will boot in Any case and allows you to restore a pro per vbios/values?

I'm on the fence a little now. I called HIDEvolution who said I could still return my GS60 Ghost Pro with the 870m.

The reason I mention it (as well as my above post) is:

    1. I'm wondering if I exchanged it for the 860m would I lose a lot of gaming performance? If I did I'd be looking at a bigger SSD as I have the 128GB right now.
    2. Is the heating and fan noise just the same with 860m as it is with the 870m?

Tops out at 90C after about 20 mins of Furmark in burn in mode and holds 967 rock steady indefinitely. High 80s after hours of Blood Dragon, everything else including 3dmark 11 is ~85 or less. I believe still better temps are possible if one has the means to adjust fan profiles and have the highest setting kick in at a lower temp,

Does anyone else have issues with LCtrl key blocking halfway depending on where you press it? This is the single one annoying thing about GS60 that I cannot solve.

Also, does anyone know if there's a hysteresis with CPU fan RPM thresholds? I'm wondering if we set 0 RPM a idle, if temps will just "get stuck" at the first threshold with the fan turning on and off every couple seconds...

Hi all. Thanks for all your help and input in the forums. I ordered my GS60 and just waiting for its arrival. Had a very broad question while I wait for my laptop.

Are there recommendations on some things I should definitely do when I get my laptop? For example:

    Run any tests
Remove bloatware (e.g. Norton - although I'm not sure why people remove Norton; isn't it a good antivirus software?)
    Calibration
Change any settings in Windows / BIOS
    etc...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Interesting finding today: M.2 SSD (default Toshiba HG5d) ATTO performance is more consistent with the Microsoft AHCI driver, than the Intel RST driver. RST versions 12.0, 12.5, 12.8, 12.9 all show the same behavior: inconsistent transfer speeds, especially 16/32/64KB reads.

I currently own two laptops, an asus k53TA and a macbook air. I'm thinking about replacing my macbook air (it's having battery issues) with either the 1799 msi ghost pro or the 2013 Razor blade at 1499. Which one would you guys choose between those two?

Also, for the MSI laptop is this the one most people are buying or is their a 16gb ram one I'm not seeing. I'm hoping for an amazon link if possible.

I'd consider some resellers. I am picking one up in May or June, but I am skipping the SATA m.2 raid option and dropping my 1TB 840 EVO in it. Some resellers will let you add and deduct certain components.

Here are two links for your awareness. I have had good service from both resellers, but HID has the option I am looking for. They will also throw in a dual msata adapter for the 2.5 inch slot if msata is more your cup of tea for raid options, though their upgrades tend to be priced a little high. The problem with resellers is adjusting price for certain upgrades.

    HIDevolution MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 052 3GB GTX 870M 15.6"

    XOTIC PC | MSI GS60 GhostPro-052 - 15.6" Ultra-Thin Custom Gaming Laptop

If you're still reading... food for thought... I bought my Samsung 840 evo 1TB @ about $.48 per gigabyte AFTER taxes and shipping for roughly $480 because most resellers won't adjust pricing on the upgrades. I believe XOTIC PC wanted $570 for that option or more. That's just one example though. Some other upgrades can be priced competitively.

Razer makes a sweet laptop, but I think i'd wait another generation. They seem to innovate more each iteration, but Nvidia may have some more powerful and (more importantly) power efficient cards by next year. Not to mention the 2013 model costs as much as the GS60 Ghost but offers much less in regards to GPU class, storage, and screen quality.

    Cheers! :hi2:

if you are having normal wireless download speeds but VERY SLOW upload speeds it is the advanced setting TRANSMIT POWER needs to be set to MEDIUM

i went from 0.5Mbps to 6Mbps it has something to do with the increased power interference

this i believe is the cause of guild wars 2 disconnecting since upload speeds were not enough to maintain connection

Can we get a definitive answer on this? I've seen comments stating both sides of the will it or won't it void your warranty debate. I would love to open mine up and and a 2nd m.2 and ram, but I would not do so if it was going to void the warranty.

I have the 2013 Razer blade. I would not even consider it if you are looking at the ghost pro. The pro has better specs all the way around and your eyes will appreciate the screen on the ghost pro vs the blade 2013. My blade is literally collecting dust on a shelf and I have not turned it on the past 3 months because the screen is disgusting. Some say "its not the bad", well they are wrong. The screen quality is the same as the $200 chrome book I have. Especially if you are used to look at Mac book air. Just my 2 cents.

Got this lappy from newegg with the 860m. Best deal ever.
    So far I like it.

But really the fan profile when not gaming leaves to desire the lappy should be silent not.

    Hope msi will fix that

Multiple time I've seen MSI's USA support say that the warranty is only voided, if they can prove you broke something.

I am guessing Newegg will get them first, and then 2 weeks later GenTech and XoticPC gets them. So my educated guess is mid-May, though I hope I am wrong and they get it earlier.

about wifi issues and bad connectivity while gaming i haven't figured it out yet
could be nvidia optimus issue, could be intel 7260ac card issue
i changed my router to a new linksys 6900ac and i still have the same problems so im pretty sure it isnt router issue (other one was wrt310)

my solution, though not elegant, was to buy a netgear extender that i simply added by push button WPS

if you have normal download but slow upload it is TRANSMIT POWER needs to be medium in wifi card advanced configure

Question... would that be considered m.2 slot. Also looks like you drew that label on the pic lefty lol Thanks for the side by side though. And if that is an m.2 slot could we expect replacement cards to hit the market from Bigfoot Networks? They say m.2 is the future or something like that.

Supposedly the GPU holds up well enough to support the display. I think the display is a little overkill in my opinion though. That's why I steered clear of the New Razer Blade.

Wondering about the fans while I am doing simple office work and surfing the net. It would be great if it was silent when only using the integrated GPU and doing low CPU work.

Anyone played around with custom fan profiles?
Can you set it for 0% up to a specific temp then start the curve at 43% as the temps move up?

Anyone done a battery test with the nVidia turned off and using only the integrated GPU?

Took some screenshots 10 mins into Furmark (arguably worst case scenario for gpu) comparing stock 870m vbios vs modded behavior. Pics speak for themselves.

I just realized the idiocy of my question.
With 0% fan, it will hit whatever "fan on" set-point within seconds.
Any curve will either be turning the fans on (43%) then off (0%), as the temps cross the set-point, or it will get hot and turn the fan on.
So, best to have it as low as it can be (43%). Sorry for the brain fart.

I get my today and I isntalled NotebookFanControl and try to use Asus n550jv config and I don´t know how but I manage to get a fan off (I really don´t know how I just played a liitle bit with program):

When installing BF 4 from extern HD, CP was on 25%, TDP on 27 W, cpu temp was 65 with fan off, AC pluggd in
When it was complete and I draw out a/c cable TDP drops on 12 w and temps on 53 Celsius, so its possible to get it soundless on idle or simple tasks

DO IT ON YOUR OWN RISK

I have the same concern about fan speeds while doing simple web browsing. Somehow the fans kick in every few seconds even though the CPU usage is constantly below 10%.

Any idea how to keep the fans as low as possible with low CPU usage and using the integrated GPU?

mardon: No repaste or modded fan tables, these results are 100% vbios only. As such there is more untapped potential, but this is proof that with just a little work the GS60 chassis can handle the 870m without throttling whatsoever.

I've run my CPU fan at 43% for a week now with great results, noticeably quieter and consistently runs at 2580RPM instead of the sporadic 2850-3300RPM they have is set up stock.

I wouldn't worry about running them at 0%, I don't think it's needed and I dare say if you do try 0% it will bounce between 0 and 2580 depending on basic usage unless you are willing to let temps creep up higher than I'd like before the fan activates. 43% really is quieter despite the only 5% drop. It's a bigger drop to my ear than the change from 3300 to 2900 and in my office I only hear it when I move my ear closer to the exhaust.

On the modified table I posted, I can do about anything office related short of serious CPU usage and it stays ~50C or under until I fire a game up.

This of course is all infinitely tweakable and I'd love to hear if someone gets a better profile for basic usage. I haven't messed with it further as getting rid of the annoying 2900-3300 noise during basic usage was my only gripe.

Thanks for taking the time to post the above, as I am looking to do the same once I get my gs60. Please be careful with furmark as it's not a very realistic scenario that pushes your gpu beyond any realistic in-game scenarios (and as such, some gpus are told to throttle when furmark runs, as it's been known to break gpus... or so I've read online on these forums). Running a couple benchmarks in loop is a much better gpu temp test then furmark (and you don't have to worry about ruining the gpu).

I look forward to any more information you post, especially if you choose to try any OC (though that doesn't seem currently necessary with the 870m) and playing with the fan settings.

So I took a chance and got this laptop in hopes that the wireless problems were an isolated event on my Alienware.
But nope, constant disconnects and ping through the roof whenever theres activity on the network. Connection shows as everything between 300mbps and 1mbps. Same problem I spent weeks troubleshooting on my old laptop before I just gave up and sold it.
It's 100% certain it's not my router as well, since I have 2 other laptops and a desktop connected without any hiccups whatsoever.

Used it one day, going straight back on the return period. Piece of sh!t AC7260, how can they make such a bad wifi card???

All my testing was done with furmark.exe renamed to furnace.exe just in case, aptly renamed I would think ;)

I agree that Furmark does tend to push gpus qute a bit, though Blood Dragon was very close in temps to Furmark. Definitely a worst case scenario.

I'm currently running at -.87mV and overclocking success has been limited at this voltage (but temps are even better). With a mild memory overclock of +300 I get ~P7500 in 3dmark 11, would have to step the voltage back up a bit to get a meaningfully higher score. Which brings me to my other observation: I have to tick the voltage up quite a bit to have rock solid stability at 1000 core, -.37mV is the most I can undervolt to attain that speed. And at that point the heat seems to creep back up quite a bit, to the point where in certain (admittedly rare) instances the card will throttle once again. Not worth it in my book, I'd rather have consistent framerate and lower temps than another ~100 3dmark 11 points and an arbitrary gigahertz gpu.

My findings are that -.50mV is the minimum needed to stop this throttling nonsense for good, anything beyond that is just icing on the cake.

That may not be true if there is a hysteresis at temp thresholds, or if CPU idle is able to dissipate enough heat passively without reaching the first temp threshold. It's still worth testing out.

This ha, I don't know why, but Blood Dragon is the hottest game I've played yet.... even hotter than Metro Last Light. I hit 81C in this game on my 860m when tinkering with some small overclocking, where as BF4 on Ultra will max at 72C even after a few full rounds. Not sure exactly what those retro graphics are doing ;)
