Thanks a ton for this info. It sounds like somewhere between 50oC and 60oC could be a reasonable threshold for 0%->43% RPM.

I just did some testing with the default EC CPU fan RPM profile. I believe there is a 3-degree hysteresis: first threshold crosses 48%->55% at >= 47oC, but crosses back 55%->48% only at <= 44oC.

To those on a quest for quieter computing: I had good success undervolting the cpu using Intel's XTU; have been running -85mV dynamic voltage offset rock stable and I'm sure some of you will fare even better. This might help keep the temps in check with those lower fan speeds.

You've been doing some great work. This is exactly what I'll be doing with mine.
Any chance you could give me some info on flashing your vbios and upload the lowest voltage that you have working.
I've just been reading up on the processor and apparently you can get all 4 cores to sit at 3.4ghz as well as undervolt. You can get a max single core of 3.6ghz as well. This is using intel XTU. Looks like we're gonna get better than stock performance with lower temps with only a little tweaking.

    Thanks so much.

Just curious, has anyone else installed windows 7 on the GS60 pro.

I had reinstalled Windows7 on the gs60 pro and it seems i do not have any issues with the wireless (for now)
I am just wondering if the wifi issue is specific to windows8.

FYI: if you do reinstall to windows 7, the link on the msi page for sound blaster cinema is the incorrect one. Use the one included in the driver disc that was provided with your notebook. Page links to Sound blaster cinema and not sound blaster cinema 2.

Thank you very much for sharing your results. I have the GS60 Pro-052 and am very pleased with the machine - But would always like to make it better like you.

Can you post a tutorial on things you did?

Yea I was able to improve the sound quite a bit using the soundblaster software and setting up a custom EQ. They are certainly still laptop speakers, but they are a heck of a lot better now compared to the out of the box performance. I have a Fiio e10 and some high quality cans when I want better sound out of the laptop.

    I'm desperate!!
I got my GS60 860M and installed win7 but didn't burn the recovery discs.
The problem is that after installing the NVIDIA drivers, the laptop start to freeze almost immediately.
I tried reinstalling Win 7 and still having the same issue.
I tried drivers from the DVD, MSI site and NVIDIA with the same results.
Anyone is having the same issue?
Can someone share the recovery disks with me? Newegg won't accept the laptop if it has Win 7 installed.

How do you guys feel about the 3k Ghost Pro vs the 1920?

I would like to have the higher resolution but I'm afraid that for some games if I have to downscale, it will look worse than on a 1920x1080.

    http://download.msi.com/nb_drivers/vga/vga_nvidia_332.38_0x2bb10911_w818764.zip

did you also install the rest of the drivers already especially the intel drivers for integrated graphics.

The right fan cools the CPU, the left fan cools the GPU, it's perfectly normal for the right fan to be the only one working when not using any 3D apps, the display is handled by the IGP in the CPU die under those circumstances and the GPU is completely turned off to save battery thanks to Nvidia's Optimus.

Sen7inel, I've been following your impressive results for the last couple of days, would you be so kind to share with us the instructions on how to flash the GPU? I downloaded the vbios image you posted before, but I have never flashed the GPU bios on a laptop before, do you use NVFlash?

    Thank you very much :)

    I´m not shure how.

I download NoteBook FanControl program and use configuration for AsusN550jv (I tried it because I have an Asus and it works preaty well on it and get temps between 54-61, both has a same procesor but Asus has aluminium and not so tin body) and put fan controll tab on 0.

Nothing happend first but when I close lid and wake up comp again fan stops to work, not each time but sometimes. MSI dragons center program hangs up somtemies but I use Intel XTU to se temps of cpu.

So I think somehow it colides sometimes with MSI fan control and stopp it complitly, than it´s just on 0 and I can´t start it again and have to close FanControl and do restart.
Maybe someone can write configuration for MSI gs60, there is conf editor.

Somteimes both fans works on high speed withouth reason even if I´m not using FanControl and sometimes even Fn + sound and backlight dont work but I don´t know if the FanControl couse this or something else. I haven´t uppgrade mine yet so it may resolve problems with that.

I prefer this version of NVFlash for DOS. There is a Win version out there, call me old school but I had good results in DOS and prefer it.

I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BREAK YOUR LAPTOP USING MY VBIOS OR FOLLOWING THIS PROCEDURE. DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU'RE NOT COMPUTER SAVVY, DO NOT UNDERSTAND, OR ARE NOT COMFORTABLE FLASHING FIRMWARE.

    * * * 870M ONLY, THIS WILL NOT WORK WITH AND/OR MAY BRICK 860M EQUIPPED LAPTOPS * * *

    You'll need:

    1. USB thumb drive (back up your files, they will be deleted)
    2. My modified vbios View attachment GS60_870m.zip ( .zip contains two versions, one undervolted -50mV, the other -75mV, both clocked at the stock turbo speed of 967MHz )
    3. GPU-Z
    4. NVFLASH for DOS

    Instructions:

    1. Ensure laptop is pugged into the A/C adapter

    2. Make a backup of your vbios with GPU-Z

    3. Create a USB DOS boot disk thumb drive

    4. Stick the contents of the NVFLASH download .zip and the vbios .rom file in the root folder of the thumb drive

    step1.jpg
    5. Change boot mode from UEFI to LEGACY in bios

    6. Boot to DOS off the USB thumb drive

    7. Double check you're still plugged into the A/C adapter :)

    8. Flash with the following command: nvflash -6 insertromnamehere.rom at this point

    step2.jpg
    9. Ensure version and ID match ABORT IF YOU SEE A VERSION/ID MISMATCH OR ERROR, last chance to back out

    10. Y at prompt if everything looks good DO NOT TURN OFF OR UNPLUG THE LAPTOP

    step3.jpg
    11. Once NVFLASH displays the UPDATE SUCCESSFUL prompt, turn off the laptop, then back on, change boot mode back to UEFI in bios and you're done!

Use the same procedure to return to your backed up stock vbios or try my other voltage version

    Enjoy :hi2:

If every worried about temps you can get a free program like HWMonitor to see what the CPU is running at. It hasnt been able to pick up the GPU on these new models so a second program like MSI Afterburner would be a good one to get too.

Apparently those keyboard LEDs are off for all GS60s. Someone claimed it was a Steelseries design issue, but I don't know if that can get fixed with firmware updates.

No, the i7 4700 (I think all of haswell) only allows for 1.35v RAM. 1.5v will not work.

That is interesting, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was indeed the case. However, I don't believe there is any real difference between the i7-4700 and the 4710; it's just a bump in the clock by 100MHz, which you can do yourself (and more) on the 4700 via Intel's XTU software.

Got my GS60 (860 version) couple of days ago and I've been loving it. Great machine, screen is awesome, fast, and for my gaming needs, more than enough. I was worried about fan noise but really not an issue for me. Yes, it's slightly louder than my previous T410, but nothing to complain about. Ran 3dmark11 and monitored temps and nothing over 80.

The only thing I have an issue with the mousepad. I loved the T410 mousepad but this one is a little harder to get used to. I use mouse 50% and mousepad 50% so rely on it quite a bit.

On that note, does anyone know if there are updated drivers for the mousepad or anything I can do to make the experience better?

    Thanks!

    Just so I'm understanding...

    1. Sen7inel's vBios for the GTX 870M are geared towards lower GPU temps/fan speeds while producing similar stock performance results?
    2. The other conversation going on lately is how to decrease fan speeds overall for the CPU in order to make the machine more quiet when not running heavy-duty applications etc.? If so, no modded Bios are necessary but software will do (i.e. Intel's XTU)?

Clarification would be greatly appreciated as I plan on attempting to do all of the above.

Point 2 has had two discussions. 1 was flashing with custom fan profiles the other was using software although I can't remember what I was.

I'll be flashing both the fan and vbios.

If you could post your resutls that would be awesome. Were the fan bios (for the CPUI) from Sen7inel in his post or were those all geared towards the GPU only? And are those the fan bios you are referring to?

Thank you so much for putting this guide together, I bet I'm not the only one who appreciate your effort :)

One question, is there anyway to try and test the lower voltages before flashing the bios? I tried Nvidia inspector and lowered my voltage in increments all the way to -68mV I believe, and it didn't make any difference in temperature in my case.

I haven't tried furmark, but running the Unreal Engine 4 Elemental demo at 1080p I can make the GPU get all the way to 91 degrees, nothing else I've tried so far heats my GPU so much, not even playing TESO or Titanfall for 3hrs straight.

I'm looking forward to try your new bios as soon as I get back home, please let me know of a way to lower the voltage for my GPU before flashing it if you know of one :)

Anyone have another power brick they use on the GS60? The one they give is just awful.. it's almost like they took all this time to design a great laptop and then just got lazy in the last mile.

    Hey Everyone,

So, I've read every page in this thread now and just wanna say thanks everyone for all the info. I've been following the GS60 like a hawk these past few weeks. Originally I was going to get the one with 860m but now that I see the pro I cant decide between the two.

Basically I'm worried that the pro runs too hot. Ive seen numbers and temps but its hard to put those to actual feeling. Does the keyboard get uncomfortable after gaming with the pro for an extended time?

I used to have an acer that used to run hot and it was soo annoying that the air coming out of it blew right on my mouse hand. My hand would get soo sweaty.

Should i get the 860 instead?

I'm going to be using it for gaming when I dont want to game on my desktop, and for bringing into work and working on it from time to time doing 3d animation. Would getting a laptop cooler that you put under the laptop fix some of the heat issues?

Any advice would be awesome, thanks

I thought the voltage control on Nvidia Inspector wasn't working?
That could possibly be why you've not seen any difference in temps.

Is the voltage slider all the way to the left by default?

From what people have posted earlier, it seems the keyboard always stays at a comfortable level, even when the internal temps hit the 93C mark. I'm sure a laptop cooler would help, but it's a question of how much. I'm still waiting on receiving my gs pro, but once I do, I plan on changing the voltages, fan levels, and clock rates, as well comparing no cooler vs with my zalman nc2000. Hopefully I'm not lazy and do a good job documenting everything so I can share it with everyone on this forum (like lots of other awesome users on this forum have).

If anyone is still having the problem of their WIFI getting dissconnected I just ran across this posting online

"[Update] Good news, folks: the WiFi issue appears to be software related. MSI has made available a beta driver - v17.0.1.5 - that has so far prevented any further dropouts. GS60 owners can obtain the updated software from MSI.com."

Suposedly you just need to update to the new beta driver

Even after playing many hours, the keyboard never felt uncomfortably hot to me, but the 860M may have better battery life due to using a lower leakage GPU, dunno though, I seem to get between 4 to 4.5 hrs of browsing at 40% brightness level (at night) and a bout 50mins when playing TESO on battery, dunno how the 860M GS60 fares.

Thanks for confirming that, the slider is all the way to the left indeed, any other way to test different voltages before flashing? MSI's AB doesn't even allow me to move the slider even after enabling voltage control from the settings...
