    Sorry new to this laptop

    So after skimming this thread...

The more "premium" SG60 has the older 860/870m on keplar ?
The less expensive GE60 has newer 860m maxwell ?

so confused.....do does the Ge60 last longer and perform better ?

Trying to decide between the 2 models

    thanks

You have no idea how many times a day I answer this! :)

It's a complicated question actually. For those that are preorder, have not been shipping yet and no ETA provided to us, we list as such because that's what they are. When we have an ETA provided, we amend that listing to provide the ETA as well. When the preorder is removed entirely as it is on some of our models, that means they're coming in but being so new and in such high demand they're just trickling in though and we're fulfilling those orders who did preorder as they came in. So given time, it'll all clear up, but just have to keep in mind that given the obvious demand and how new they are, gonna be a bit before everyone is happy. Best way to get it sooner is just to place an order and wait. Don't know other sellers policies regarding it but we don't charge for preorder items until they're in hand or verified as on the way. Just gets your foot in line.

That's because the non 3k version isn't preorder for us. Their availability won't necessarily be ours. That would be as I said above where they're coming in and we're working our way through the orders already placed but it may take some time for new orders to be fulfilled as the supply is pretty limited.

GE is more their budget line, bang for the buck chassis that's mostly plastic and quite a bit thicker/heavier. It does have Maxwell, but it doesn't have as efficient of a cooling setup so it actually runs hotter than the Kepler 860m.

GS line is their new super lightweight and thin chassis, mostly metal construction, premium end of the market option. You'll be paying extra to have great performance in a .7" chassis that weighs 4 lbs. Portability and design/looks/solid feel are what you are getting for your money here.

Performance should be similar between either series... really depends on what you want to spend and are after in the end. If you don't care at all about size and weight, then the GE series will play games just as well.

There are some on hand, but as we're still working through orders already placed there aren't any extras since they're just trickling in at this point. Those orders have already been updated into production while those that have not been allocated due to still waiting for the machines would still be orders pending.

If your looking to upgrade to 16GBs you can add this SO-DIMM:

    Amazon.com: Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Intel Laptop Memory KVR16LS11/8: Computers & Accessories

That's the one I used, MSI uses Kingston modules and that module has the exact same clocks, voltage and timings, and I was able to go dual channel just by replacing in the included 4GB module for this one.

No point in going for higher rated modules, the BIOS doesn't even support XMP profiles so you won't be able to take advantage of faster RAM, also going from 11 to 9 CAS rate will give you moderate gains in synthetic benchmarks at best, and no real world performance gains either :p

Awesome, thank you! I may end up doing this, though I'm still leaning towards the 2133 memory. I emailed GSkill on compatibility, probably should email MSI too but I don't know how quick they are where G Skill has always been responsive. I can always upgrade the memory later, the standard 12GB will suffice, too bad it isn't dual channel but again, in the end these are small things and my major development work won't be starting up for a couple weeks. And I doubt it will make a difference in gaming either way not a big deal.

I'm pretty irritated with the touchpad. I cannot use scroll commands. Does anyone have a fix for it?

I've tried reinstalling ELAN a few times, but that was no help. I cannot locate any updated drivers and windows says they are up to date.

Is anyone able to use one-finger scroll commands? On the ELAN software under the "One-finger" tab there isn't a scroll selection. Under the Multi-finger tab there is a scrolling option but that doesn't work. I can't think of anything else to do to troubleshoot this.

Has anyone had any success using Sen7inel's vBios? If so which version are you using?

Also, what is the best program to control or permanently change the CPU fan RPM's to a range that keeps them quiet during idle/non-intensive use?

I ordered two GS60s and they are stuck in phase 4 (assembly) because you are stocking on 128GB Crucial M550 Solid State Drive [M.2] mSATA.

Have the drives arrived yet? I placed the order for the laptops more than a month ago I'm getting really fed up, you guys advertised that the laptops would have shipped end of march. :(

So I've been following this thread for a while and my other leading options right now are the Asus N550JK (on the budget side with a Touchscreen) and the Lenovo Y50.(which is still a ?) but I'm still interested in the GS and wanted to know if anyone had any complaints on the build quality. I saw the less than flattering IGN review, and while I take them with a grain of salt, I remember some people in here showing some concern about the thinness of the screen. Has the build quality proven to be an issue for anyone?

In the same boat. gs60 vs y50.

Here is a great review. The build quality i think will be superb. Just dont expect all aluminum build quality like a macbook pro or razer blade, but know you are not getting cheap plastic.

I think the too biggest complaints are the trackpad and the default fan curve.

I've got a noticeably quieter GS60 than they come out of the box and highly recommend if fan noise bothers you at all, I have no idea why MSI set the base fan speed so high as it is not needed. Even at 43% (2580rpm) fan speed I am only seeing about 43-44C when doing basic non intensive stuff.

I have the 860m in mine so his vBIOS doesn't apply... mines cooler by default ;) I will at some point tinker with the 860m vBIOS just because that's what we do if for no other reason than just to do it :p

I can't speak for the 860m but with the 870m the tipping point is somewhere around 92C and the card begins to throttle. I'm not a graphics designer, but subjectively speaking the gs60 comes with very decent colors out of the box. This screen is not the abysmal garbage the previous generation blade or y410p came with; it's crisp with bright, warm colors and excellent viewing angles.

The fan noise and the trackpad are my two biggest worries.

Tell me if you think this would work to allievate some of the fan noise. I was thinking about slightly undervolting both CPU and GPU, I would repaste them with good paste, and I would put in a custom fan profile where the fans would hover around 20% until it hit 70c then ramp up pretty aggressively until 90c. My biggest worry is that I cant get the idle temps under 50c with 20% fan. Thoughts? Also, could you hear 20% fan?

Hey, I'm new to this forum but I'm a new GS60 purchaser. As for what everyone has said in this thread so far regarding the WiFi issues, I can testify. I can't even play games on this thing at all at the moment the lag is so bad. I've gone back to playing on my 3 year old laptop because I can't figure out what the problem is.

I thought it might be the range on the wifi, so I bought a wifi range extender... That hasn't helped at all. I thought it might be the Intel wireless driver, downloaded the latest beta version, and that didn't help. I pretty much have no idea how to fix this, and was wondering if anyone else did something that worked?

A quick question to all those who are familiar with how laptop works etc.

The GS60, as we all know, throttles when we're on battery to control the power consumption.

Is there anyway we can do to actually manually force this mode on or off?

The reason I am asking is because I am having big issues with actually trying to source a spare adapter, or a slimmer one for traveling. Big issue is an understatement. IMPOSSIBLE issue.

Anyway, so this brings me to the alternative, that is to use a lower wattage power bricks when I am on the move and do not need the full 150W. I have managed to control my power consumption to an average of 90++ W with jumps/spikes to 110W occasionally while gaming. But it is still nowhere near to the 60-70W while gaming that it consumes while running on battery.

Any help or point of direction to where I can do this would be most helpful.

I had an issue with this. I couldn't use any gestures/scrolls etc, even though the mouse icon was registering the multi-touches.

I solved it by resetting my laptop back to default. Of course, you will lose everything. I just learn not to try to fix it with this damn machine and I picked up a Logitech T650 touch pad instead to use on places where I have limited space for a mouse or am unable to use on (like on the sofa etc). The touchpad I only use in dire emergencies when there are no other alternative and someone's life is at stake here. LOL...

Quite stupid that a USD 40 touchpad is able to perform so well.. instead...

From initial observation as well as some rough estimates, they are of the same size.

I just bought them anyway. I'll let everyone know if it fits perfectly once I get it.

In the mean time, give me urm... 24 hours ++ and I'll compare the size with my girl friend's GS70 for you.

I'm sorry, but for temps on 860 vs 870 what's the difference?

    Also about the performance difference?

    Also are the m.2 sata's upgrade-able easily?

installing an m.2 drive is easy; however, on this laptop, it requires removing the motherboard as the slot is on the other side.

I'll be attempting the upgrade tomorrow.

From the looks of it, lots of screws, lots of patience needed. You need to remove the motherboard itself as it's on the other side of it (top side of the laptop). Need to watch out for all the ribbon cables as to not snap any when removing it from what I've heard/read.

I didn't pay attention to it but yes it does look like it's a m.2 slot.

Haven't hear about Killer wireless with M.2, maybe in the future you never know. :)

Yes the GS60 GhostPro-3K and GS70 StealthPro will come with i7-4710HQ CPU.

This may be a tad heretical, but has anyone tried covering the "gaming G series" text on the main logo of the GS60 laptop cover (or another MSI laptop)?

I know there are a couple people out there who would like to bring this to work with them and having "gaming" written on it makes it a little tough! Anyone been successful using a Sharpie (pen) or sticker(s)? I like the glowing dragon, but the text is a little too obvious!

    Thank you for your understanding.

According to a post a few pages back regarding a custom fan profile you'll be in the mid 40 Celsius range during light to moderate computing tasks. But why is that your biggest worry? The processor's max temp is 100C, why stick to an arbitrary limit?

They have posted new beta drivers on MSI WEBSITE for wireless I can attest they have fixed my problems. I don't even need the wifi extender anymore. The links are a few pages back.
Make sure your transmit power is set to medium in advanced properties of the wireless card, if set to highest it causes interference and my upload speeds were reduced from 7mbps to 1mbps

Program called Throttlestop will work for the cpu and msi afterburner for gpu. Throttlestop has a steep learning curve.
Use at own risk my old laptop would regularly shut down from heat with those running while gaming

Alright, I made some progress and I think I'll be able to modify CPU Fan curves without reflashing the EC.

There are at least two tools that can be used to change CPU and GPU fan curves through software only. You can temporarily overwrite the EC with custom values, which would (only) reset if you insert a clip through the side case pinhole while power is off and AC is unplugged.

    1) "NoteBook FanControl 1.1.0.17" by Grantig
[Vorstellung] NoteBook FanControl (NBFC) - ComputerBase Forum

    2) "Fan Control Tools 1.0.4" by Pherein + "RWEverything 1.6.5.9" by Jeff (former relies on the latter)
Fan Control Tools by Pherein v1.0.4
    Download | RWEverything

Neither tool comes with profiles for the GS60. Please DO NOT try arbitrary profiles, as writing values to incorrect EC registers may result in erratic behavior or even component damage that an EC pinhole reset may not be able to fix.

To create the correct GS60 profiles for either one of these tools, I used RWEverything (EC tab) to figure out which EC register does what:

    GS60 CPU
    Current temperature (read-only): Register 0x68 (104)
    Fan curve - Temperature: Registers 0x69-0x6F (105-111)
    Current fan speed % (read-only?): Register 0x71 (113)

    @ Sen7inel:

Are you thinking of creating a vbios for the CPU as well on the 870M GS60 version?

If so, would it be an all-in-one vBios that would cover CPU and GPU?

JdawggS316 you don't need a Bios mod for the CPU. Just download the official Intel XDU program from their website and tweak away.

    Ok thank you.

    Sorry I'm a major n00b.

Is anyone else's GPU-Z or other programs not showing the 870M temperatures? Mine isn't showing up on any programs?

*Intel X TU* or you can also use ThrottleStop (much more advance tool).

Nice findings :) Any chance you could share the GS60 profile for either tool? I downloaded Notebook FanControl but since there was no profile for the GS60 I didn't try further.

    Thanks!

    1. Ok so I plan on using the programs mentioned above for CPU fan-tweaking.

    2. And is the most reliable vBios (somewhat b00b-friendly) for the GPU right now on the 870M Sen7inel's?

I don't believe neither of the above allow you to do fan tweaking. Instead they are meant for changing clock rates and voltages (though one could argue that lowering both would lower the TDP which would then cause the fan to not turn on..... but that is a stretch compared to a utility that allows you to just change the fan profiles)

Couple of questions. Can you set the W A S D keys to a different colour than the rest?
How's the gaming on the 870m. Can you max most games out?
