Does anyone know if the M.2 slots accept PCIe SSDs?
-
I have pretty much decided on the gs60 nonpro version. However I did have a question. Can I put in a ssd without voiding the warranty bc xoticpc overcharges for ssd upgrades.
-
I've heard that end user upgrades do not void the warranty, bur someone should confirm this.

yeah... I've been a little obsessed with this laptop the past few weeks, trying to figure out if i should get it or which version I should get... I think ive decided that im gonna get the regular pro 1920x1080 version... hopefully it isnt too loud or hot and hopefully there arent any manufacture problems with it......... knock on wood
-
Is it that one ^^^.
Also, how difficult would it be to remove all the stuff necessary to get to the m.2 sata ports? I have heard that you have to break some warranty tape to get to them? Can anyone that has changed the SSD confirm this? -
It involves removing the motherboard. The M.2 slots are on the opposite side.

Did the people who complained about the wi-fi issues many pages back find a solution to it then? I gather setting the transmit to Medium helped some people, but it sounds like the driver wasn't much help?
-
Just got to play some Titanfall (I know it's not the most demanding game). With all the settings maxed except AA disabled, it was 60fps the entire time. Everything maxed (including AA) dropped the fps to ~30-40. The cpu and gpu both maxed out at 75C (about an hour worth of playing).
-
The wifi is something I'll have to look into. Another thing I'm not a fan of is the LEDs on the keyboard won't go white. Only very light baby blue.
Other than that. This thing is a monster! -

I upgraded yesterday my GS60 (non-pro version) with latest EC and VBIOS from msi, but for my case, it seems there is no difference at all than before..
Noise is the same level when playing heavy games and idle is the same also. Performance is the same also with the new vbios file.
Looks like it's more efficient on the GS60 pro version (with the gtx470) then. -
Anyone with the wi-fi issues tried the drivers direct from Intel? They seem to think they've fixed things:

I was playing with the laptop on a cooler last night. Today when using the laptop on my desk in work Crysis 3 got up to 92C but didn't throttle with the - 75mV bios. Think I'll repaste at the weekend once I know everything else is working OK

Sen7inel do you use - 75 or have you gone even lower?
-
I have a -87mV version, but it was not stable for me, will PM you to try if you wish
-
Yes please mate. I can OC a little. Are you getting over 90c on some games still?
-
Hello,
Is the crucial m550 M.2 compatible with the GS60 ghost pro?
Thank you in advance. -
Hey Mardon did you get your free watch dog game and laptop case as well? I have just ordered from Overclockers UK using DPD next day so hopefully if all goes well I should receive it tomorrow, apparently they only ordered 100 from MSi and already had 20 pre-orders according to their forums.
I decided on the top model as I don't want to lift the motherboard out to upgrade those components, but I dont mind upgrading the easy to access components eg battery and HDD. So I wanted to make sure all slots available (2 msata and 2 RAM slots) in my laptop are all used up for future proofing. My guess is in about 2-3 years time I probably would swap out the 1tb for an SSD when prices become even better and buy a replacement battery depending on how well it lasts.
On another note I believe idle noise is only an issue if you make it an issue, but when gaming I don't mind the fans ramping up, at least I know it's keeping my GPU cool so it will last longer.
However, I do agree that in idle such a high fan speed is unnecessary and should be toned down. Hopefully Msi will read this forum and give us the necessary updates -
Yeah I got the voucher code and activated. Make sure you do it straight away as it expires at the end of the month if you don't use it.
I ordered mine after 5pm and it still came next day with DPD enjoy! -

I wonder if next day shipping is better for the laptop.. I'm unsure of the free 7 day shipping... 7 days of the box getting tossed around from ups station to ups station has me wonder if I should spend the 60 bucks to get 3 day or something..

Regarding Wi Fi, I upgraded as per earlier post from here https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&DwnldID=23865 and was still getting about half the speed I expected. Had a quick look in the advanced settings for the dual band 7260 and saw a preferred band setting which was set to no preference, I changed that to prefer 5.2 and my download speed jumped up to about 27Mb instead of 12. I know everyone seems to have a different story about how they solved it but thought i'd share in case it helps someone else

I'm in "Control Panel - Network & Internet" and I can see Intel ProSet/Wireless Tools but there is not settings section.
EDIT - Nevermind I found it, its in device manager. -
-
You can install it now, you can't install it get anyway it just registers to your account. You get a code from Overclockers which you then give to Nvidia who then give you a new code you have to activate via Ubisoft. Its a few hoops to jump through but will hopefully be worth it.

I'll install the new BIOS and EC files from MSI now, curious to see how they compare. I'll report back if the fan table has changed and if so I'll post a screenshot using Svet's tool.
-
It was disappointing to have MSI not address the overly aggressive cpu idle fan profile in their EC update. On the other hand, the gpu fan profile was overly lethargic, I found the 91% gpu fan duty cycle up to a blistering 94C unacceptable.
So, I made my own
Using the official MSI v504 firmware update as a base, I performed the following modifications:
1. Lowered the 0-46C cpu fan speed duty cycle from 48 to 43% (translates to roughly 300rpm less)
2. Increased the 85-89C gpu fan speed duty cycle from 91 to 95%
3. Increased the 90-94C gpu fan speed duty cycle from 91 to 98%
That's it.
I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BREAK YOUR LAPTOP USING MY EC PATCH OR FOLLOWING THIS PROCEDURE. DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU'RE NOT COMPUTER SAVVY, DO NOT UNDERSTAND, OR ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH FLASHING THE EMBEDDED CONTROLLER.
* * * THIS WAS TESTED WITH THE GS60 PRO ONLY, THIS IS UNTESTED WITH THE NON-PRO 860M EQUIPPED GS60 * * *
You'll need:
1. Official MSI version 504 firmware update
2. My modified EC firmware View attachment 16H2EMS1.zip
3. MSI EC update guide
Instructions:
1. Download & extract official MSI version 504 firmware update as well as my modified EC firmware.
2. Take my modified file 16H2EMS1.504, and copy it over the original file in the official update (don't forget to unzip!).
3. Follow instructions per MSI EC update guide to complete the procedure!
Enjoy a quieter laptop during web browsing/light computing and lower temperatures while gaming :hi2:
Big thanks goes to ti20n for the fan profile register information! -

EDIT: Doesn't appear they changed any fan speeds/temps at all upon further review.
Will definitely be changing back to 43% as I posted previously in my last pic. Works great.
On different news, Svet's tool now supports the 860m in the GS60 for modifying the vBIOS for those interested:

92 °C with an -75mV undervolt? How is this even possible? I was hoping the undervolt would eliminate these high temps and delivering max. mid 80s...

With the new fan profile and -75 i'm at 90C thats on fire strike in the demo version where it makes you watch all the other demo's. I've never seen it that high gaming.

Or did the new fan profile change the temps..? -

Anyone have a walkthrough to upgrade the RAM? I did an SSD install before but now I have to remove the motherboard and need an idea of which screw and connectors I need to remove or if anyone has a link to a maintenance manual that'd be great.
Need to get this 2133 RAM in. -
I think I'm still gonna repaste. Lifting the back of the notebook up helps a little as well. -
-
Finally decided to send it back.
3 mains reasons
- noise
- build quality (touchpad died, screen gap)
- heat
I really wanted to like it but compared to the razor blade or a MacBook Pro it is clearly inferior.
Performance top notch.
I can't wait for a MacBook Pro to adopt these new gpus.
Really

Yeah, MacBook Pros are increasingly moving towards integrated graphics since Intel's graphics are getting increasingly better. In fact, currently all you can get is a 750M on the top-end 15" model, and that is debatably worse than the integrated graphics at some things!
