Ken,
Would you be able to post results from a pair of the Crucial 480GB M500 M.2 SSD installed in a RAID 0? Crystal DiskMark would be fine.
-
That's really amazing. But can you also provide some information about battery life please?
-
IC Diamond for the win.
I would care more about the dusts on the fan than re-paste it again, clean my fan every 3 months.
The fan settings was all automatic, didn't change anything in fan speed.
By the way, fan noise tested with Sound Level Meter:

Well, with a whisper being around 30 dba Id say 26 looks (sounds?) pretty good!
-
Thank you very much for the tests!!
Noise issues seems to be fine...i´m just worried about throttling and temps issues under full load, have you tested it?
and also under medium-load like watching a Full-HD movie? would the bottom-part be too hot? (for example for watching it on the bed)
Many thanks!! -
I agree but when there was sometimes 55-60 dba while in load looks really high...
-
Yeah that concerned me too, but I don't know much about sound tests with laptops. Those values were mainly right behind the laptop almost on the vent. Obviously noise levels are also heavily dependent on the volume of air moved as well, and the sound meter seemed to be closer to 30 when half a meter away form the laptop during those high load tests. That doesn't seem too bad to me, but I could be naive here.

Without a standard setup (same room, same distance from source and same angle) you can't make noise comparisons with a noise meter just stuck in the vent like that.
-
The only guys that I know that have been doing this with the same setup for years is notebookcheck, hopefully they get these soon.
I saw they did the schenker version of the clevo w230ss with 860M.. It didn't fare well in heat and noise. -
That's probably an issue with the chassis more than anything, the w230st didn't do too great in those departments either. Hopefully the GS60 fares better since it has 2 fans instead of 1.
Also, not sure if this has been answered already, but is there any chance we could get some 3dmark Fire Strike benches? -
Yes I will.
That was with sound meter right next the fan, in real-world use you wouldn't get that close to the fan. -
Yeah that is what I meant, what matters more is actually the decibel level around half a meter away, which looked pretty damn sweet from his test. I would say if the bits and pieces we have seen add up... the noise level from this video, and the 6 hour battery life + ~40 degree C temps from the polish review... then despite the lack of the Maxwell chip, the box holds together pretty well.
-
seemingly better than just pretty well in my opinion, the p34g v2 with maxwell had less battery life and ran hotter. I am personally looking forward to this laptop again!!
-
-
what about the new msi gs70 with the 860
is that a keplar or maxwell
is there a new msi with the maxwell chip? -
The gs60 & gs70 are using keplar chips only. no maxwell here.
-
Ken,
Do you know if there are plans to make the crucial m550 m.2 SSD available in the configuration? That is definitely going to be my choice for the m.2 ssd raid 0 setup. Also, what is the m.2 ssd that ships with the unit? -
It's KeplEr not KeplAr -_- ... if I am not mistaken then there's no proof that every GS model will come out only with Kepler 860M ... there must be a good reason why it's not Maxwell or something
-
Are the Kepler chips on the GS60 and GS70 on MXM models, or are they soldered down? Also remember seeing that the MXM modules would have twice the memory is that true? If so, if they are soldered down and have only half the memory, would it help in reducing power and heat?
-
Sorta disappointed that a 15.6 inch notebook doesn't have an optical drive and an external one usually takes up 2 USB ports to work...
-
If that's a must for you, take a look at the gigabyte P35W

Crash course in noise measurements (my master's thesis was in underwater acoustic communications). Standard noise measurements are taken at 1 meter from the sound source. When you see charts that say a whisper is 30 dB, it's assumed to be measured 1 meter away from the whisperer unless a different distance is specified.
Unfortunately almost nobody except acoustic engineers respects the distance requirement. So the noise readings you'll find online are all over the place and not comparable unless you know how far away it was measured. e.g. Notebookcheck does their noise tests at 15 cm. When you do that, you're supposed to label the result as 40 dB re 0.15 m.
It's not so bad when the site tells you how far away the measurement was taken. Those two numbers give you enough information to figure out the dB at any distance. I'll skip the lecture on intensity vs pressure. The important part is that for distance changes, dB = dBref + 20 log (dref / d). So if Notebookcheck measures 40 dB @ 0.15m, and you're sitting with your ears 0.5m from the fan, that means the noise you'll experience is 40 + 20 log (0.15 / 0.5) = 40 - 10.5 = 29.5 dB. So the noise of the fan at 0.5 meters is like a whisper at 1 meter (30 dB).
But if you're only given dB, it's impossible to characterize the noise. It's like saying "I drove at 40 mph. How far did I go?" It's impossible to answer unless you also tell us how long you drove. -
Yup I think noise level is pretty good and temperature are good with stuck paste (compared with GE series with Maxwell) and even better with IC Diamond.
That we don't know yet but will find out pretty soon (should be Kepler like Svegetto said. )
Yes we will however, the M.2 version is not really available yet. maybe another month or so.
They are soldered on the boards, only MSI GT70 / GT60 series have MXM.
Space time, like : see you at 5PM, but when? see you at Starbucks, but what time.

That's what I meant, only in fewer words lol. -
I can hear the fan ramping up during the test, but it does sound like a very quiet room.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015GenTechPC likes this.

Since when?
The few times I have used an external optical drive all I used is one USB hub and it worked perfectly fine. -
Is it possible to use the new battery boost whilst plugged into the mains to limit the fps> limit the power> reduce fan speed/noise?
I'd be happy with just 40-50 fps on whichever game I'm playing, (instead of 50+ fps) if it meant the fan noise was less
Or does it only work when running off batteries ? -
No one knows for sure yet, just wait for full reviews. But batter boost is only while plugged in or else it wouldn't be called battery boost. I think

They are soldered onto the main board. There's no MXM version available.
It helps with space-saving since it does not require another layer of circuit board to occupy space.
Reduction in power and heat isn't noticeable with such design. -
There's a link to a Russian review of the GS60 in another thread. Google translates it well enough.
Short story on the GPU, 860M Kepler 2GB soldered to the PCB.

For those critical of Ken's sound test, I think he was trying to be helpful, and the video certainly answers my concerns regarding the new GS60. He has never professed being a sound engineer, and I for one, am appreciative he purchased a sound meter, and took the time from his busy schedule to do his test and video. Also, he has always gone the extra mile to answer questions, and assist folks here in the forums. If I know Ken, these criticisms are well received, because he will certainly make an effort to better himself in this process. No doubt, we will see better noise-level testing from him in future videos..... you watch, LOL!
Thanks for the video Ken!

Can anyone shed some light on availability of the 870M variant of the GS60 Ghost? I've seen a couple posts earlier in this thread about availability in Europe and Australia (with links to sites taking orders) but even after today's numerous press release there appears to be no North American reseller that offers the 870M, just strictly 860M
-
Yes in a very quiet room in the middle of the night and the room has double pane windows, just like how people would use their laptop normally.
-
Just checked newegg: 'release date: 04/18/2014'. Any confirmation on that?

Does anyone know why does MSI keeps advertising the 860m version when they have a higer configuration razer blade killer with 870m?
For those who are unaware of the gs60 2PE with 870m:
MSI Global - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Motherboard, Graphics and more (just scroll down to the table at the end of the page) -
Good question, I think I will buy the one with 870m assuming we get some reviews that come in showing that the form factor can handle the extra heat.
-
Does anyone know if the keyboard keys are removable? I might end up buying the GS60 from a german website and will probably have to swap the Y and Z keys due to the german QWERTZ-layout.
-
I wouldn't go so far to say ”Razer Blade killer " until we see some concrete reviews and specs. More like competitor.
-
I wouldn't bet on the keyboard being removable with such a small form-factor. I know that the asus g750 has removable keyboards, and perhaps other large notebooks. Check if a replacement keyboard is on the market when the notebook is, or ask your retailer to contact msi.

Well, I said that considering the price tag but you're right. -

Here's a new article that states the "competition" you're talking about...although the article reads more like a press release:
MSI's GS60 Ghost Brings Competition to the Razer Blade - IGN -
thesalmonofdoubt Notebook Enthusiast
Again in this article too, gs60 is being shown like a gtx 860m notebook which puts it out of the league of razer blade. I guess MSI is not planning on shipping the 870m models to the west. I can't think of any other reason than that for this kind of advertisement. -
In europe its possible to preorder the 870M Version. It is the only Version that comes with the 3k display atleast in Austria

It's strange, it'sis the opposite for GS70, can only find 870M versions in Europe, but can see both 860M and 870M version in US. All these are pre-order only so it may change when it gets closer to availability.

Would the 860M kepler and Maxwell be similar in performance ?
I see that the base clocks differs by a huge amount ( 1029 MHz for maxwell vs 797 MHz for kepler ) . Would this difference in base clock translate to a huge difference in gaming performance ? -
The performance would be roughly the same for both I believe

How ? Won't the huge difference in the base clock translate in performance difference ? -
holliday777 Notebook Evangelist
This article claims the Kepler and Maxwell variants of the 860M will perform roughly the same...according to Nvidia:

Any word on an actual release date for the Ghost Pro?
