I've been on vacation for 2 weeks. Can someone confirm that the FanControlTool Profiles I posted for GS60 EC v.503 don't work anymore for v.504? If so I can figure out new ones for v.504, but it'll be a pain to maintain if MSI keeps changing fan register IDs with every new EC update.

So I'm still on the fence between the 860m and 870m. I've been following the forum and I see a lot of tweaks are coming together to make the 870m more heat friendly. So would you guys say I should go ahead and get the pro and try my hand at under clocking and undervolting? I don't know much about CPU/GPU temps, but I wouldn't mind getting a slightly less powerful graphics card in exchange for less heat degradation.

You don't need to underclock the 870m as that defeats the purpose. It's all about getting the temps down. The choice is yours really. With the 860m you won't have any of those worried and can then have some fun getting the 860n as close to the 870m as you can.

For those interested, I've made another modified EC, this time a silent one :)

This EC contains a modified cpu fan profile that stays silent until 54C, then drops the temperature 8C versus the default 3C to eliminate excessive fan cycling. For best results use this EC while undervolted. Check out the chart below to see how it compares to stock in detail (and admire my 1337 mspaint sillz):

    silentECsettings.gif

Download here (for v504 MSI update): View attachment 16H2EMS1 (2).zip

Download here (for v505 MSI update): View attachment 16H2EMS1 (3).zip

Follow my instructions in the quoted post above, then enjoy silence under light duty conditions such as browsing the web :hi2:

Personally, I decided to pick the one with 860M as it corresponds perfectly to my usage. I rarely play games but when I play them, I want to put everything to ultra settings. Did some tests until now and I can say that the 860M is a great card, the only thing is that anti aliasing eat a lot of the card, so generally it's better to leave this option disabled in games.
Otherwise, I made my custom VBIOS, yet I decided to stop my overclock to 967Mhz boost step (+52Mhz over stock) and 1500Mhz (+250Mhz over stock) which scores me a nice P5620 3DMark11 ( +440 3DMark11 over stock). Max temp detected when playing heavy games is 78° (in my room which had 20° when I did my tests).
I'am pretty sure my card can reach much more overclock, but anyway it won't replace a 870M or better as it's not the goal, I prefer a stable experience, and reaching over 80° for a 860M is not so good I would say.

About undervolting, I don't like this, generally you can save maybe 1 or 2° but at the cost of many instabilities, movreover coupled with overclock. You can't do this at the same time, it's a logic question.
To reduce the graphic temp, I can see repasting as the only good solution (I will do this in 1 year, when my warranty will end).

I verified that EC firmware v.505 has the same fan registers as v.503. So the FanControlTool profiles I posted before should still be usable.

That's a known issue -- you have to reapply FanControlTools or RWEverything not just after sleep/reboot, but also every time you plug or unplug the AC cord.

That's another known issue -- FanControlTools does not support changing the hysteresis (delta between temp threshold going up and down), so the fan goes on and off within 3 degrees of the first threshold, when using the Silent profile.

I recommend using the modified EC that Sen7inel posted to work around both these issues. Alternatively, it is possible to change the hysteresis via software if you use RWEverything directly instead of using FanControlTools (which uses RWEverything to perform the EC writes).

I have repasted the GS60 ghost pro with coolaboratory ultra , but i think it's not completely compatible with the graphic card before of the insuffisante pressure between the chip and the copper of the cooler.

So , for the cpu , i win maybe 5 degres , and for the gpu , i got a gelid extreme (the best traditionnal paste) , and it is just fantastic with I7@-75mv and GTX870m@-75mv (+550mhz on mem).

@mardon , are you full stable at 3.5ghz on all 4 core buring stress test with -75mv ? no throtteling ? what about temp ?

For the GTX870m , i can't overclock the core with -75mhz , and even with -50mv , it's not completely stable at 1 ghz , i have to test the temp with stock vbios for GTX870m and to see how can the GTX870m reach on overclocking maybe ... but the temps would'nt be good i think even with a good repast...

In fact , your overclock/undervolt is really great mardon ! I want to have the same :(

Any news on the performance vbios? I am anxiously waiting =D

On a side note, there was a 870m driver update today. Does it mean that the undervolt is back to default?

Driver update doesn't affect voltage or anything else in my custom vbios, but an MSI official vbios update does change all of my custom gpu settings back to oem spec.

As for the performance vbios, I decided not to release it as it runs almost as hot as the stock one, 2-5 extra fps is just not worth the extra heat

Btw guys, is there a way to check if I successfully flashed the -75mV vbios (Sen7inel's)? My temps for intensive games are still 90's.. yet I can change the voltage slider in nvidiainspector. I might just reflash I guess, but I am out of the country right now, so will have to do that when I get back.

The 870m is a powerhouse as is, no need to get bummed out mate. Just enjoy greater than stock performance at stock gpu core clock with much better temperatures to boot. I've done some extensive performance testing getting very close P8000 in 3dmark11, and as great as that score seems in real life are trivial at best..translating to 2-5fps on average. Enjoy more, worry less :)

I'm completely stable on the CPU I've stress tested it for half and hour and had days of use with no issues. I was stable at - 75mV on all games bar crysis 3 so bumped it to - 65mv which allows a little overclock. I was playing batman AA GOY last night pretty much maxed out and it looked fantastic. I heard this game is good at heating up GPUs and they weren't wrong. 86C but that was on my lap with no cooler. I'm pretty confident with the help of the community temps are now under control.

Hmmm, I don't think your gpu is defective, though most others have experienced lower temperatures. Under what conditions do these temps occur? Have you tried any of my modified EC updates? These have a more agressive gpu fan profile at higher temperatures.

I tried this in my hotel room which was at 25C. I am currently using Kazoul's custom EC profile over here.

My temps have always been pretty hot before flashing this profile though. I wonder what's wrong.. hmm

EDIT: Just flashed your silent profile based on 505, thanks. Quick question: My laptop does not seem to reach 46C plugged in under light use so it's always at 44%, is this normal? When I unplug, temps drop to 46C and the fan stops. I'm using XTU at -85mV and 2Ghz underclock.

I am trying this out with a cooler master notepal x2 underneath on medium speed (the speed just before the loud annoying grinding noise). I have also underclocked and undervolted. 2ghz and -106mV.
All i have open is chrome, and all i can hear is the hard drive.
the fan turns on for about 15-30 seconds every 5-10 minutes.

If I put cooler master on max, the grinding noise from the cooler master is worse than the normal fan at 43% therefore pointless, but the CPU fan takes longer to kick in as it sits at 51-52C.

That's strange. If you go into the advanced settings on the power management compare the CPU settings between plugged in and battery then create a profile called silent matching the battery settings which give you the required temps.

Hi, I've been reading some of this thread and the reviews on line. Just wondering if anybody is having major problems with the MSI gs60? I've had my eye on like 4 laptopts and found out the other three all had problems with wifi/heat/throttling etc. Thanks!

The gs60 pro has the same problems. Though some people fixed the throttling by doing custom fixes to the laptop.
The gs60 non pro doesn't have the throttling or heat problem.

a few people have been complaining about wifi problems.

I personally wouldnt call any of the problems major, if you want a beast of an 870m in a thin laptop you're gonna have some heat. It's unavoidable atm.

I am sorry if this was mentioned before, but is there a list of possible ssd product out there which is for the Ghost?
Since I think the m2 slot in the unit is running on msata interface instead of the new PCIE interface.
I actually really hope this unit have msata slot or just PCIE m2 slot, that would provide much more backwards or just better future upgrade compatibility.
    Thanks :)

Sure thing! Yeah, if you're at all worried about heat then the base gs60 with the 860m is prob deff the way to go. Yea, I probably should have swapped win 8 for 7 too, I've never used 8 before but figured I'd give it a chance. I also went with larger msatas, 2x 256 without raid. I figure it has enough space for games and in the future i can do raid 0 when I need the extra speed. Then I'll swap the 2.5 hdd for an ssd and move the games there. When ssds are cheaper. Thats my plan anyway.

Yes, I'm running it without any anti aliasing, but everything else maxed out, TXAA would make my framerate stutter, driver rel. 337.88 helped a bit

The game is badly optimized, as someone else mentioned even on my water cooled SLI Titans the frame rate dips from time to time :(

Yeah, seems to run fine on the auto detect HIGH on the 860m, but performance is a bit all over the place ha. Haven't had time to monitor the framerate or even mess with settings, but honestly wasn't impressed with the gameplay. I'll give it another shot after finishing Wolfenstein.

That sucks, I've still yet to run across this problem... Played a couple hours this morning again without issue. Think its a defective card you've got? In countless hours of playing, it has yet to happen.
