Mardon if you have the chance can you test your temperature without the cooling pad. Thanks

Not sure if a lot of this sli titan talk is legit. Watchdogs on my desktop runs maxed out on everything on a 4k with no lag well over 60fps. A slim notebook for a couple grand is not a hard core gaming machine it's a portable on the go make do device. For that reason the msi fits the bill light portable and plays most games well. Any good overclocking tips for the 860m. Without a vBIOS anyone had good recommendations for overclocking using nvidia inspector?
-
Will do. I don't know how much difference it makes to internal temps but the laptop as a whole is much cooler to touch. I was playing in bed with it on my lap.

Congratulations on running at 4K and over 60FPS, that's quite an achievement and worthy of praise, considering not many 4K monitors even support 60Hz at the moment, perhaps you have one of the newer and cheaper TN panel based 4K monitors recently released by Samsung, Dell or Asus, but even then none of those monitors is capable of displaying over 60FPS due to their limited refresh rate... (60Hz max using DP 1.2).
As for the SLI Titan talk not being legit, a link to my system build log is in my sig, but you can find it here if you want:
Project Crimson Titan (Custom WC for GTX Titan SLI) | TechPowerUp Forums
As for the game having issues on my GS60 I was able to make the game run smoothly by disabling TXAA, I actually don't use any sort of FSAA as the pixel density on this panel is so great I barely see any aliasing, the game runs like butter now.
I managed to make the game run well across my systems by using the 337.88 drivers for my Nvidia based systems and the Cat. 14.6 drivers for the 290Xs, after installing the driver on my Titans SLI was disabled by default, I enabled it and the game runs much better.
Unfortunately it seems the game is quite buggy and the frame rate dips are quite well documented by hardware review sites, using the latest drivers actually solved a lot of issues for me.
Edit: uploaded a video of the game running at Ultra settings, Vsync off, 1080p and FSAA off on my GS60 Pro if you guys wanna see it

Apologize for the long video, please skip to the 5 min mark to skip the game loading and intro movie

Asus 4k monitors and had it almost a 1yr. Nothing new and it's display port before we go down the other road of hdmi bandwidth as your knowledge on this is zero

How typical. I'm thinking a few patches and a new nvidia driver release will smooth things out a bit.
-
Yeah hopefully. Ultra maxs my vram out. I'm gonna try your new profile tonight as well as a max OC. Gonna go for 90c and maybe 1100core 560mhz mem. See how that helps performance.
-
I think he's talking about the over 60fps part...
But that's neither here or there, this is a gs60 thread and lets all keep it that way -
I presume you are referring to the Asus PQ321Q, a $3.5K monitor available to the public in July 2013, infamous for its poor Nvidia compatibility due to a multi-stream transport demultiplexer that spits out two data streams, a problem that not until recently was solved by an Nvidia driver release, but no, even on that monitor you are not able to see "well over" 60FPS as, alas its refresh rate is, like I mentioned on my previous post, still limited to 60Hz.
Oh, and I can assume we are both hardware enthusiasts, was the "knowledge on this is zero" part really necessary?
Precisely, funny how he skipped the part were I mentioned even with DP 1.2 to drive 4K at 60Hz your monitor can never refresh at frame rates "well over" 60FPS, unless you like staring to a seizure inducing screen tearing fest or limit your framerate to the monitor refresh rate using VSync... which btw being a dual Titan owner myself I highly doubt can be averaged at 4K anyways...
Anyways, back to topic, I was able to make the game run smoothly without OCing my card at Ultra settings on the GS60 Pro, but as mentioned, the VRAM is maxed out at ultra settings, leading to sttutering in certain areas, not much you can do about except for lowering the textures to high, on my Titans the game uses almost 4GBs of memory according to GPU-Z

Should prob get back to what this thread is about, gs60.. 4k monitors are pretty far from topic.
Does anyone know if a 3 fan laptop cooler is better then a 2 fan laptop cooler? I think the ghost only has 2 vents on the bottom of it.. does that make a third fan on a laptop cooler pointless? -
So no one else having high temps like me even after repaste + 75mV underclock on the 870M?
Still hitting 93C.. -
I fully agree.
To answer your question, I've used both, have two different cooler master ones, going from three fans to two fans didn't make any difference, so I use the two fan model now as it's smaller, as you said the GS60 only has two vents in the bottom.
What I've noticed though is that fans actually suck more air from the top grill over the keyboard than from the bottom vents, airflow seems to be stronger in that area. -
OrangeCoffeeMug Notebook Consultant
Ok thanks, Yeah I've been trying to decide between those two cooler master ones you have. I guess I'll get the 2 fan one if the extra fan doesn't make a difference. Does the ghost fit okay on the 3 fan one? I read that 15.6 inch laptops might slide down that cooler as its so wide the laptop might not sit on the rubber tabs enough to stop it from slidding. Did you have any problems with that? -
How effective do you think a notebook cooler is (how much temperature change in the GPU/CPU compared to normal)? Or it mostly a change of the surface temperature?
-
I've got zero temp issues since the tweaking. Not seen 90c since the repaste.
Re the cooler. I'll play some more watchdogs tonight without the cooler and report with and without temps. I can only comment on my coolmaster notepal x3 which has one massive fan. It's not the best looking cooler but performs well and sits on my lap easily when in bed.15th Warlock likes this. -

I guess it depends on the laptop but my friend has a dell that crashes if hes working on it for a long time unless he's using his cooler. -
I have no problems with the laptop sliding down, the three fan cooler is bit too big for the Ghost (got it originally for my 17" lappy) I prefer the two fan cooler, it fits the laptop better.
-
I'm throttling in Battlefield 4. Other games vary, but BF4 sure seems to push it.
-
Have you locked the frame rate at 60? Anything over that can't be displayed on the monitor and will add to temps.

I have a few questions to GS60 Ghost owners. I am considering of buying this or the lenevo y50. Although the y50 seems nice price wise, as I hope to keep the laptop for a long time, I am looking at the GS60 more.
1: Where is the best place to buy for customization? Im looking at gentechpc, xoticpc, and powernotebooks. Just wondering which one would be cheapest.
2: Are there any known problems with the ghost or is it pretty much perfect?
3: My old clevo had a insane heat problem, with a fairly powerful internal, does it get hot to touch during gaming or everyday usage?
4: Any recommendations if I do chose to buy this? (Such as getting a notebook cooler or such)
I did check out a few reviews, but I wanted to hear more from current owners. -
OrangeCoffeeMug Notebook Consultant
Hey, I'm still waiting for my gs60 pro to ship so I'm not an owner yet but I've read this whole forum and know everyones complaints and things they like about it so, I figured I'd reply to ya.
1:gentechpc and xoitic both have good customization, I dont know powernotbooks at all. gentech seems to be a little cheaper with some of their upgrades but xoticpc says that they'll price match. Xotic has more options for painting and doing that kind of stuff to the laptop if you want to do that.
2: perfect ha.. nothings perfect.. The ghost is awesome, some of the complaints have been that some people have wifi connecting problems. some people dont like the trackpad. some people have complained that the fan sound while not playing is too loud and some have complained that its too loud while playing. But stuff like that it's hard to predict what youll think until you actually hear it.
There are fixes for some of the heat and fan noise if you're up for modifiying some of the software of the laptop. It's suposed to not be that hard but can break your laptop if you mess up.
3: From what ive read the regular gs60 doesnt get hot to the touch besides the bottom of the laptop and its internal temps are pretty good. The gs60 pros internal temps get a lot hotter, i think it might get warm to the touch but im not sure. During every day usage it doesnt
4: I'm going to get a notebook cooler for work and home just so its a little cooler, I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make. Another thing to note is its a little bigger than regular 15.6 laptops so you wont be able to fit it in 15.6 laptop backpacks.
read more of the forum, a lot of people have posted their personal reviews -
I think it depends on the GPU usage. At around 95% usage the temps go up quite quickly, so if I turn the options up, the frames will drop below 60 while still fully utilizing the GPU.
Are your temps all from locking at 60 FPS for every game? -
Character Zero Notebook Evangelist
So as far as temps and sitting on your lap, I just found the sleeve to be the best thing to sit it on. I just unzip and fold over the back and sit the laptop on it. Nice and comfy.
So the wifi is just annoying to me at this point. I ran an Ethernet from a power-line adapter to my seat on the couch and my wifi issues are only there when I travel. I know its not the best solution but this laptop is just too awesome and it fits my use. -
@mardon & Sen7inel : Does the -62mV vBios is tagged as (MODIFIED) in Nvidia Inspector ?
And do you overclock the GPU with Nvidia Inspector ?
These days I messed up trying to install win8.1 pro and i finally fixed now I' m affraid to install Fedora because of the UEFI...
thanks guys

Thanks for the info!

laykun has it running ubuntu, so i'd say you have decent odds.

With - 62mV I can overclock the core 13mhz and the memory. With less voltage I can't and I have to download on crysis.
I only cap games like left 4 dead which would run at 120fps. Watchdogs, crysis 3 etc don't run over 60fps so can't be capped. I usually play overclocked on a laptop cooler I tried without last night and it touched 90c once. I Clocked back to stock to compare and it dropped to around 86C and stayed there. So goes to show the laptop cooler does make a little difference. That was paying for 2 hours (had to stop as girlfriend was sulking).Mimo22 likes this. -
now with the new bios and firmware , i can't go under 2680rpm on idle , when before i can go to 2550 rpm.... i try to modify the sen7inel firmware and kazul firmware , but it seems that when i want to put 43% or 42% , the fan won't go under 2680 rpm , when before i fix with control fan tool 43% with succes.
Any ideas ? -
Did you reset the embedded controller via pinhole by the lan port? 42% is a no go, people had mixed success with 43%. Did you try flashing the older firmware that worked fine before?
-
All non-stock vbios will be tagged [MODIFIED]. Yes you can use Inspector to overclock, in my case I just tweaked my vbios to my max stable Inspector settings...Mimo22 likes this.
-
In fact , i used your new firmware 505 , semi passive , but i prefere the non passive one.
So i take your 505 firmware and i put 43 when you put 00 for idle , with the svet tool... but it seems to not work ....
The same things for kasul , when i take his firmware , i want to modify 44 by 43 ( 2680 rpm by 2580) , it doesn't work...
The date of modification of the firmware is good but ....
I i flash the GS60 (your vbios + your EC firmware) since many days with succes .. but when i try to modify one of your ec firmware ... it doesn't work.
yes , when i flash the EC firmware , i shutdown the computer , unplug it , reset the embedded controller , plug the computer , press suppr , go to the bios , pressF9 , enter , press F10 , and enter
Thanks for your work
I notice something with you vbios , i can't overclock the memory of the GTX870m when i'm on the battery , and i can't overvolt the core.
Is it normal ? -
I'll ask you again, are there specific programs or games you're hitting 93C under? Or is it all of them? If that's the case then perhaps the repaste is worth looking into.
-
Try going back to my original, non-passive v504 EC flash. I'll make a v505 version of it when I get a chance.
I experienced the very same behavior, so I'd say it's normal. -
Hi guys, I preordered the 3K version from gentech not too long ago and had been in correspondence with gentech. Apparently, they are getting shipment end of this week or early next week. Can anyone confirm?
-
I just try to go back to the kasul 505 bios and transform it on semi passif ec firmware , i succed.
So for me , it's just the other part of the ec firmware (other fil or maybe something else) that block completely the fact that we put less than 44% ... the minimum is 44% , when i put 43 , 42 or 35 or 10 % , the fan rpm still remain at 2680rpm (like 44% ) and is not cycling form 0 rpm to 3200 rpm like before.
I don't know you understand me ... but for me there is an issue give by the new 505 EC firmware somewhere...
44% is correct ,much better than 48% , but 43% were really great , and your semi passif is good but for a really light use of web browsing... Watch a film in 720p or 1080p is to difficult for the cpu to stay under 55° even in office mode (2ghz max) and undervolt -85mv.
thanks for your repply
-
I do believe I understand just fine, you're looking for the lowest possible idle speed, which used to be in the ~2500rpm range at 43%, now it's ~2600 no matter what. I'm at work and cannot test if I can get to that rpm range with v505 but should have some answers for you soon.
-
BTW Mardon, without the cooler how hot was the laptop around the keyboard/etc?
-
xoticpc start to send the 3k orders, and has the 3k on stock, any news on gentech about the 3k?

Before everyone gets too excited..
The machines are beginning to ship out but just like all newly released models there is going to be small shipments to resellers initially. Speaking for ourselves, we do have preorders existing that must ship before any new orders and so there might be still a little delay in getting new orders fulfilled.arkham likes this. -
Good to hear the 3K versions are finally coming in... Hoping my Gentech order gets processed and shipped soon

The keyboard and palm rest does not get noticeably hot when gaming. The back left corner and bottom do but that's to be expected. It'd be too hot to put on your knees and game without a cooler. This isn't an issue for me because I wouldn't do it.
On a side note Sen7inel thanks for the fan profile it's working well. Shame it can't stay spinning at normal speed for boot up then cut out as the temps would stay even lower for longer after the internal boot. -
Sorry, didn't see your question from before I guess. I hit 93C with Metro 2033 in about 10-15 min, AC4 had mixed results, recently it only reached about 88C.
EDIT: Well I underclocked to 2.0GHz before, after bringing it back to stock, the temps got a lot better, thanks. Only thing is that now the clock does not lock at 967, it gets to 941 and fluctuates a lot, should I reflash the vbios? -
FWIW even with v.503, 43% only worked sometimes, whereas 44% worked all the time.
Note also that over time, with dust or oil aging, the same voltage will drive less RPM. That means there will be a point where you set 44% but you really get 43%. So I'd say 44% is safest today, but maybe 45% would be even safer for longer term. That's probably the reason they set 48% in first place.
Another way to confirm this theory is to set 43% today, but put the keyboard cloth cover on as well as partially obstruct the rear vent with blankets. If the fan starts going off/on, then you'll know the setting was too low. -
I had this, it was a conflict between nvidia inspector and after burner. Just hit the reset clocks button a few times.mskiller likes this.
-
I'll probably order the laptop either today or tomorrow.
So Mardon what profile are you currently using for the fans? I am planning on doing the -75mV underclock and repaste without overclocking. I need the fans to be decently quiet even while streaming movies/doing stuff for work. Do I have to underclock the CPU for this or will the fan profiles work well enough? -
-
Sjplatt I used Sen7inel's solent profile. So if I underclock it stays quited. The GPU runs at 100% fan too so I should see a little lower temps there too.

Thanks for the info both of you
