The "easy-to-find" is the tough part. We have mentioned it before on our video reviews and on this specific thread, but with 350 pages its tough to read them all. You're always welcome to PM or give us a call with any questions

Just called MSI UK and they said upgrading parts like RAM and SSD does not void it but if you damage it or it goes wrong they have right to refuse to fix under warranty if they suspect its due to the upgrade. So in other words yes It does void as we can void it at our discretion.

To clarify: If an unrelated component fails, the warranty should still remain intact. Warranty coverage is determined on arrival/inspection, of course, but an upgrade that MSI states is permissible is not immediate grounds for dismissing the product's warranty. They only refuse service if the end-user's component or the end-user himself/herself is directly responsible for the failure in question.

So I have the 3k version with the 860m for a while...
So far the only things that still bug me a bit are the touchpad and the fans.
Do any of u guys have good settings or a good way to deal with this touchpad? I find it very annoying when playing hearthstone and the touchpad just decides to stop reacting to touch for a few seconds...
As for the fans would I need a modded bios or just tweak around? The things is that they ramp up way too much on simple games and it could be a bit more silent when browsing / watching vids.

    Besides that, great laptop.

For the people with the 860m version...

What are you guys getting on the core clock? I can't get mine over +60 without crashing, even with adding more power. Thankfully I was able to get +825 on the memory which pushed me over 6k 3dmark11. Has anyone been able to get anything higher than +60 core?

    Thanks.

Well, I think I underestimated the risk of disassembling. Although I not only made several laptop upgrading for myself and friends before, but also assembled several desktops, I really did not realize that one day I would deal with this compact design. So I just focused on the appearance and the user experience videos, since I could not find it in local stores. Next time, as you said, when buying an electronic device at such price, I will be much more careful to evaluate it than before. I still satisfy with my purchase so far, since I know these all are due to a mistake.

Yo I have a few questions about this laptop (GS60 not pro). I was mainly wondering how do I activate the dedicated GPU? I know the power button gets orange when you do it but I have no clue how to activate it. I tried fn+f5 to switch to game mode but it only makes the screen brighter I believe (my game isn't performing well with the intel gfx). I'm pretty sure it would do this automatically if the game was like a known game that it can detect but I think it doesn't even recognize I have a game open. Is there any way to activate the GPU purposefully instead of automatically? And if not how do I make it detect this game? Another thing is I noticed this happened a bunch of times already sometimes randomly when I try to move the mouse cursor with the touchpad it gets super jittery and jumps around and hardly even moves... and the touchpad is not dirty or anything when it happens. Additionally, it starts clicking EVERYWHERE i mean everywhere literally where the cursor is it spams clicks (it won't spam clicks if I don't touch the touch pad to move the stuttery mouse, but it will if I do) and I can't seem to get the cursor unstuck unless I wait a few minutes or just use my mouse.

Can anyone please help me with these few problems? It would be really awesome

Try the latest ELAN touchpad driver on MSi's website. However, this will probably not improve things much as the touchpad is really awful. There's almost no way to use the GS60 without a mouse unless you want to frustrate yourself to no end.

Its pretty useless. For such a expensive laptop they got one of the most important useability features wrong.

If you damage anything it's at MSI's discretion if they will void your warranty. Personally I assumed they would so took out separate insurance.

The vbios is a funny one. I'd not like to say if it would or wouldn't. But as long as you keep a copy of your original or download a stock one from the website and flash it back they'd never know.

I've Repasted mine and did get improved temperatures but not as drastic as I've seen on other laptops. I used Coolabratory Liquid Ultra which I personally think is the best on the market.
If your opening it up be aware it's not for the faint hearted!

Yes, since GS60 is 15.6" and a typical 15" bag can accommodate 15.6" unless this bag is really made for 15" or smaller.

My GS60 fits fine in my backpack that is made to fit 15" laptops, but this laptop is definitely big for a 15". Can see that pretty clearly just by looking at the huge bezel around the display.

The term of 15" can be misleading and confusing, but this is a common thing nowadays.
All notebooks and briefcases in the market claimed to be 15" are not true 15" but 15.6", see below 3 models for dimension comparison.

    GE60
    383 x 249.5 x 37.6mm (Width x Depth x Height/Thickness)
    15.1" x 9.9" x 1.5"

    GS60
    390 x 266 x 19.9mm (Width x Depth x Height/Thickness)
    15.4" x 10.5" x 0.79"

    GT60
    395 x 267 x 55mm (Width x Depth x Height/Thickness)
    15.6" x 10.6" x 2.17"

Hey everyone, I've been reading this thread for the past couple of days and finally decided to join the helpful community. I will most likely be buying this laptop soon because I need one for my engineering classes in college, and the MSI GS60 fits all of my needs and is perfect for my budget (around $2000 USD). Before finalizing my purchase of this laptop, I have a couple of questions and concerns.

    1. I hear that the new Nvidia Maxwell GPUs are being released soon, and I am wondering if it is worth it at the moment to buy the GS60 with the current Keplar 860M/870M cards that are in these configurations? I feel like I would be pretty angry if I were to buy this and have the new Maxwell cards fit into the refreshed configurations in the next couple of months. School starts in October for me, by the way.

    2. When the Maxwell cards arrive, will they cost significantly more than the current 860M/870M? Or will they cost around the same price?

    3. If I were to purchase a MS60 in the next couple of days/weeks, should I go with the 860M or 870M? I will most likely be ordering it from GentechPC/XoticPC online with the extra Arctic thermal paste in order to keep lower temperatures, because I am concerned about them. I hear the 870M cards throttle often, but for $100 bucks more, it seems like its worth getting the 870M over the 860M.

    4. And will battery life be drastically different when comparing the 860M/870M on normal use, like running coding programs or surfing the internet and watching Youtube videos? If the 860M and 870M have similar power draw on idle, I might as well go with the 870M.

Thank you for taking the time to clear up some of my questions! The MS60 truly is breathtakingly beautiful, and I prefer it over any other thin multimedia laptop out there in the price range. Thanks again!

    Anyone got suggestions?
I decided to delete all partitions off the SSD and switch to legacy mode in BIOS and install Win 7.
It worked fine so installed drivers from Intel website and Nvidia website but now laptop is always on Geforce even on Desktop.
Plus it freezes and fans go to 100% until I turn laptop off.

First of all I have the 3k with the 860 but I will try to help you on some stuff.

    1. Dont really know if there will be maxwell or not

    2. ^

    3. I had the same trouble deciding as u did .. I needed the laptop for my software development classes in college and for some gaming but my main gaming machine would still be my desktop.. If u pretend to make the laptop your main station and play quite a lot of demanding games I would say go for the 870.. otherwise for casual gaming the 860 would be a better option since it also has a better cooling.

    4. For the tasks you mentioned the gpu wont come into play since it will probably use the integrated graphics..

In the end its up to your needs

Recently got the GS60 Ghost with the 870M. I've noticed that it hits 93 degrees Celsius when playing BF3 fairly fast and it stays at that temperature. Should I be worried about that or is the GPU made to be able to withstand that type of temperature? Thanks!

Hey Kevin from GenTechPC! It would actually be the upgrade on your website! I was playing around with the configurations on GentechPC and was looking at the option of having to upgrade the stock RAM in the GS60 to the Kingston HyperX memory. I have no idea how this would affect performance though..

Yes, many people have ran into this since 870M can exceed GS60's thermal budget thus hitting more than 93C, therefore the BIOS/EC had capped this to 93C.

After removing both Intel and Nvidia drivers I installed Intel and Nvidia from MSI website.
First Intel then Nvidia but still same issue in Windows 7, it boots up and then when you try go to Nvidia control panel it says no display connected to Nvidia and then fans go to 100% even though power LED is orange.

Make sure install the Intel Chipset drivers first:

    http://download.msi.com/nb_drivers//cs/chipset_intel_9.4.0.1023_0x30c0e0a8_818700.zip

Also the Intel HD Graphics drivers on both GS70 and GS60 and different from other models, if you download it direct from MSI it will work:

    http://download.msi.com/nb_drivers/vga/vga_intel_10.18.10.3496_0x98020f83_w818764.zip

    I did install Intel first.
Removed intel website, booted into safe mode and installed msi intel and rebooted and then installed msi nvidia but same issue.
The loud fan noise only happens after nvidia install and it says no display connected.

Try updating the firmware on your router, and see if you can change wireless encryption settings to WPA2/AES if you haven't.

Those ISP-provided equipment tend to have higher chance of compatibility issues. :(
Some prefer to use their own equipment for wireless access point purpose.

Apparently it can be for a price. There is a person by the name of Svet that does mods for MSI BIOSes
Here is an example: GT628 Fn & LCtrl + ALT, WIN and BACKSLASH - WILL DONATE GREATLY

Just curious do you see performance gains in games overclocked? It's about a 10% increase on paper let me know if it translates in game. I can't overclock mine it keeps hanging.

Story of my GS60 GhostPro 3K-097 continued.

I'm so excited to know that my laptop has been fixed and now it is on the way back. I kept waiting for the online update, but nothing happened. So I made a phone call to the MSI support. What they surprised me is that they had received my laptop, fixed it and shipped it. The reason why they didn't give any information online is due to the upgrading of the MSI supporting system. The man answered the phone call is really reliable and helpful. Well, so far, I should say I am 100% satisfied with their post-sales support.
It is shown on UPS that my laptop will come back by next Monday. I will post further update of my RMA experience.

Hi. I'm using the CoolerMaster NotePal X2. By temperature monitoring, I should say the pad is helpless for cooling down the CPU & GPU temperature (I can hardly find any temperature decrease of the chips), but it can improve the user experience. That is the periphery of the laptop is cooled down. Maybe you could try the X3, which is the best cooling pad of CoolerMaster. It has a fan of 20mm, so it seems more effective.

I'll test with BF4 over the weekend and get back to you. Comparing 3Dmark11 my machine was getting 5300-5315 stock so a 15.5% increase. I found a 3dmark11 score in this thread with an 870m equipped machine which was 6723 stock, so 8% faster than mine.

Now the big question... is the clocked 860m actually going to be stable? lol.
