On a side note... Is there any 860m owners that wish they had purchased the 870m version? I've been slowly reading this entire thread and it seems like a lot of the heat issues with the 870m were solved by undervolting the card. I'm contemplating on returning my unit for the 870m if the throttling has been completely resolved with a modded vbios.

morning guys,
so here is my story!
I bought on cyberport.at a GS 60 pro 3k notebook wich i returned the next day! The resolution was just horrible !! Yes, you could scale some things and mess around with the DPI - you could get chrome work, some other programms but overall like i said for me it was just a pain in the .
Yesterday i got my GS 60 PRO (none 3k) 16gb, 870m wich is absolute AMAZING. I was never more happy with a laptop than with that one. Everything works like a charm. I made an undervolt custom vbios with svet tool and flashed it (using mardon guide here in this thread) with no problems. I used those settings http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...6982-msi-gs60-ghost-ghost-pro-thread-bios.jpg. Since now i was able to test only world of warcraft and sc2 and the temperatures were AMAZING. Not even close to 93°. The next days i should also reciev my cooling pad notpal x3 and thermal paste wich i will also put on my cpu/gpu i think. -
Did you try Origin on your 3k? I heard that was a nightmare for people.
-
no i didnt
-
Anyone got undervolt vbios for 860m?
-
Im interested in that too..
But what I want the most is to be able to tweak the fan settings so it spins less when its not needed -
So GS60 owners.
I plan to get the GS60 052 -- 870m version.
After going through the last 20 pages of the 356 paged thread, I realized there are problems with the touch pad (not fixed yet), some people face problems with WiFi and the biggest issue , temps (which some people say have got better with mods).
So first of all, how do you guys like it as a gaming laptop?
How bad do the temperatures go after the mod? and how were they before it? Really 93C, as understood from a few user's comments ?
What will I have to do after getting my unit? All I read is Svet's mod but couldn't find the link. -
I have no issue with the touchpad. It's not jerky or inaccurate but maybe I just have low standards. I can click what I want to click and that's good enough for me. I have heard that three finger gestures are iffy but I've only used two finger scroll and it works.
Wifi was iffy but the latest msi driver fixed it for me and I've had no issues.
93 is the thermal limit and your card will throttle before going any higher. It's designed to be able to operate at that temperature. That being said, I've never hit it but it's kind of a silicon lottery. You either get lucky or don't. I haven't undervolted it since I don't think I need to.
From what I've heard, Svet's tool is by donation only. -
I've found this method for flashing the vbios

Not sure if this is okay to post here or not. I don't meet the selling criteria here because I lurk too much (even though I have been a member since 2010).
I am selling my GhostPro-052 because I don't have the time to enjoy it! You can see my for sale post on Hard|Forums. I think it is well priced, but I am open to offers as I want to free up some capital for new hobbies.

Mod, feel free to delete this post if it violates some criteria. -
Seems a little expensive considering a 16GB RAM version with the newer 4710HQ is about $175 more brand new.
-
Thanks for the feedback. Would you mind linking me to that? I can't seem to find it at the normal places.
-
The best way i could describe the trackpad's jerkiness is that if you open up paint and try to draw a circle, you'll end up with blocky sides. If you try the same thing on the y50 or the razer blade or even a mbp, the sides will be smooth. Also, three finger swipes must be done perfectly horizontal with all three fingers in the same line or else they won't register.
-
That doesn't have the 4710HQ processor or the 16gb of memory. The models that have the 4710HQ don't have the 870m thus it isn't really comparable. I am of course open to offers though, and not stubborn on my price but it is almost $200 less than new and in essentially new condition.
-
Will you ship it internationally as well? or is it just for US residents?
-
Oh craziness thought Gentech would have the 053 version now.
Regardless, here's the place I bought mine at
MSI GS60 2PE-053US Ghost Pro w/ Core i7-4700HQ, 16GB, 128GB SSD + 1TB, 15.6in FHD, GeForce GTX 870M, Win 8.1 at Memory Express
$1949 CAD = $1776 USD
It has the 4710HQ despite the title saying 4700HQ. -
I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I didn't know where else to discuss it...
I'm interested in this system (still deciding between 860 vs 870, but going with 1080P), but also noticed the Origin EVO-15S and the Maingear Pulse 15... The images make it look almost exactly like the Ghost, but the dimensions are off and both claim the systems are under 4lbs. I'm guessing due to the similarity it's probably a MSI chassis, but I wonder why the dimensions/weight are different.Anyone happen to know what the deal is or have any info/confirmation on either? -
My country sells a version with GTX 850M and 2GB DDR3, which MSI claims to have a similar thermal footprint as GT 750M.
From the charts, it seems that the 850M is a huge improvement over 750M and not a lot weaker compared to GTX 860M (which by the way is just a Kepler chip, not Maxwell).
I'm not going to play too many games. Just wanted a thin and light laptop to use for years to come.
I will consider buying this version if it solves the overheating issue. Let me know what you guys think. -
The charts your looking at may be comparing the gddr5 version of the 850m. The Kepler 860m should still be about 25% better than the ddr3 version of 850m

I'm still without my laptop. I RMA'd the laptop due to a strange blemish on the screen. When it was returned the laptop would not boot. I tried a reset and restoring my backup and nothing fixed it. They wouldn't provide me with a product key so I could try a brand new install of Windows 8.1. It goes back in on Monday. I'll let you know how I get on re warranty since I've Repasted. I'm not worried as I have an insurance policy to cover it if they refuse. I'll be very angry though as the laptop was working perfectly before I sent it off (bar the screen).

That's terrible, sorry to hear that.
Definitely call them up and have them to pick up the slack where they left at. -
That sucks, sorry to hear. Curious, what was wrong with the screen?
-
Might want to consider the Asus Zenbook UX303LN. If you don't play too many games, I doubt you will have overheating issues.

Hi all, been following this thread for a while now and I think I've made up my mind that I want to purchase the GS60 2PE with 3k display. Could any users who own it comment on the display and how good the colour gamut is? (If there is a very noticeable lack in certain colours etc.)
Thanks  -
Curious to see how much the 850m can improve in this slim chassis especially regarding temperature and noise.
Would prefer at least 14 inches for the rare occasions when I really need it for LAN parties. Nice touchscreen ultrabook though. -
Hello, I am fairly confident that I will be purchasing the MSI WS60 laptop and although they don't have the exact same specs, I am assuming that the chassis and screen will be the same. Since I can only go off of the few minutes of testing in the in-store models for the Ghost, I would like the opinion of owners who have had this laptop for a while and have gotten used to it.
Any thoughts or comments on the:
1. keyboard; key travel, flex, any missing keystrokes, button layout, overall feel;
2. screen (3K or FHD), is the 3K worth it or is the quality of the FHD good enough?;
3. touchpad, I read in the past few pages that the touchpad is horrible, from what I testing in-store it wasn't bad, but as I said it was only for a couple minutes (I will be using a mouse for any CAD work, touchpad would only be for browsing);
4. user interface and ease of use for special MSI programs like programing keys or the backlit keyboard;
5. WiFi issues?
Thanks in advance. -
I can't really give you a professional opinion but this 3k is beautiful. Everything looks very sharp and clear

Hello All.
I received my GS60 last week.
Excellent laptop, but is getting too hot(I'm in Brazil!)
Can someone give me steps to undervolt my gpu?
Thanks in advance -
Hey Marcelo,
I believe the easiest way is using Nvidia Inspector.. You can limit the temperature to one you find reasonable and the GPU will (heavily, depending on the temp you set) throttle when that temp is reached.
Other than that, there's a couple of tutorials on YouTube. Also, you can search on this forum or the GS70 forum too... This is the one I used to make a custom vbios on my GS70 http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/747505-msi-gs70-stealth-pro-theard-51.html -

Isn't the key in the BIOS? Windows should install from media. -
Makes sense. In that case, you should also check out OriginPC EVO15-S. It's the same design as the GS60 but without the "Gaming G Series" logo on the back cover which personally bothers me because it doesn't seem suitable in a professional environment.

The keyboard is just a hair below an Apple Macbook in terms of touch and key travel: very good, in other words, for the chiclet style. There's a tad of flex if you pound hard, but in normal use it's very solid. I notice I have to avoid hitting the spacebar on the sides or sometimes it doesn't register - more often it's fine.
I don't have the 3K screen so can't comment. The regular screen is very bright and sharp, really pretty excellent in my opinion, with good viewing angles and nice color saturation.
I don't use the touchpad much but in just playing around with it I didn't notice any problems. I'm not into the gesture thing tho, and the basic functions seem fine to me.
The SteelSeries software for controlling the keyboard backlighting scheme is one of the best and most intuitive I've ever seen. I could wish there were more levels of brightness adjustment, but color adjustment is just about infinite and very easy. I haven't programmed any keys but it looks completely plug 'n play.
I've had no wifi issues whatsoever, and that seems to be a function of what router you have (mine is an Apple Airport Extreme). From what I can tell if you have a newer model which supports the AC protocols you'll have no trouble, but if your router is a bit older and only supports BGN you may, depending on the brand & model. Others here have detailed how they have worked around this issue by changing/updating the wifi device driver.
I think that's it, I hope it helps. I'm really interested in how the WS video will benchmark compared to my 870M, and I'm definitely a bit jealous of the Thunderbolt port you'll have on your machine. As a gamer/general purpose laptop my GS60 has so far been an outstanding product and if the WS's specs meet your needs I can't imagine you'll be any less pleased. Best of luck to you!Korporal likes this. -
I agree about the logo - it's the one thing that turns me off about the laptop - the styling is great except for that. I wish a simple blank back panel was more widely available.
The couple places that do offer something more subtle (this and maingear are the ones I have seen) also charge several hundred more than the comparable configuration elsewhere. -
I think the reason for this is that Asian and Western culture are strikingly different in their views on gaming. Gaming isn't as niche or seen as dorky in Taiwan or Japan or China as compared to say in North America.
-
Thanks a lot, I just hope colours are good.
Has anyone done any upgrades to their machine? Disassembly is clearly not for the amateur but as the HDD is accessible can you swap it for a standard sized SSD? -
The hard drive is easily accessible, going deeper does require a disassembly guide and is fiddly.
-
I don't mind its reference to gaming, I just think it clashes with the rest of the laptop's simple design. Everything is a clean dark color with broad lines and then there is this one giant red splotch with an intricate design on the back. Too flashy
-
I think you need the red for contrast and to break up the blackness that is the lid. However I think instead of the "Gaming G Series" (doesn't need to state the obvious) it should just say MSI.
-
There are bare bone systems out now without any logo on.

Received a GS60 012US from GenTech PC on Friday.
The only mods I had them make was to add a 256GB Crucial M550 M2 SSD and repaste with IC Diamond.
So far it's been running great.
Yeah, the touch pad is not the best but I mostly use a wireless mouse.
I taken my loved GT780DX completely apart and back together a few times so this one shouldn't be an issue for me to upgrade.
Thanks Ken for the great GenTech workmanship and quick shipping. -
Hi
I'm a new owner of the MSI Ghost GS60 2PC, bought in Thailand. The retailer sold it with the additional service of adding in a 128 GB SSD mSATA (ADATA) for the OS, which I was very happy about. However, after purchasing it and trying it at home, I found one main problem with the boot up.
To put it shortly, the machine itself couldn't seem to find the SSD at the first try, and therefore fails to boot up. A quick push at the power button fixes the problem, and I can get the OS to boot up quickly at a second try. However, the problem persists - the boot up would fail every other try, and even when I put it on stand by, more often than not it would fail to locate the SSD, and I'll have to manually restart.
I've tried looking into the BIOS to see if this problem could be fixed with the boot priority, but the mSATA isn't even listed. Is there anything else I can try on my own before I return the machine? I'm mainly located in Germany, but right now I'm visiting family in Thailand so I don't have the right tools to open up the laptop myself
Cheers! -
I just received my GS60 3K from UPS after it has RMA'ed. It was shipped in a box provided my MSI and inside it was my package, so it's three box protection. After carefully examine it (without opening the back layer), I should say I'm 100% satisfy with MSI's RMA department. The laptop has no scratch and is exactly the same appearance as it was before sending to them. The power problem has been fixed, and they updated the BIOS. The whole process of the RMA, from the date I shipped the laptop to today, is two full weeks.I guess this may not be a big problem, and I can even fix it by myself, if I'm fortunate enough to face it again. So do you guys know any techniques to can fix the power-on failure? Actually I tried to hold to power button when it has no power supply to discharge the remaining electricity, but it does not work.
-
My new complain of the laptop is that it is hard to locate the navigation keys (e.g. ←, →
without looking at the keyboard. This cause some inconvenience when typing something. Hope in the future version, a projection on the keys will be considered and added. I guess I will DIY it later.
-
Can anyone give me an idea for the battery life of this machine? I'm looking at the GS60 Ghost-012 model with the GTX 850M

I remember some saying that using an AC wifi signal gives stable results. I was thinking of buying the Netgear AC750 to extend my network to the room I use the laptop in. But my router is N. Will the extender take my N signal from the router and then re-transmit it in AC?
-
Although I'm using the 3K-097 module, my experience should still be useful for you, since both machines use integrated graphic card when not in gaming. It can sustain a little bit more than 2 hours when watching soccer match on ESPN (volume was not turned on) and doing text work. And notice that I did not turn off the back light of the keyboard. So I guess the maximum battery life of this module should be around 3 hours. I will specifically do a test to verify it tomorrow, since I rarely use the laptop without being plugged in.

I think you most likely have an M2 SSD and not an mSATA SSD.
Amazon.com: ADATA USA Premier Pro SP900 128GB M.2 2280 Solid State Drive 0.85-Inch ASP900NS38-128GM-C: Computers & Accessories
Is there a hard drive installed in the 2.5" SATA bay or is the SSD the only drive?
If you do have a drive in the 2.5 " bay try opening the bottom and removing it to see if it fixes your SSD bootup issue.
The only tool you'll need to do it is a small phillips screw driver to remove the screws securing the bottom cover.
To access an installed M2 SSD requires the mainboard removal because they're on the hidden side of the mainboard. -
just got around of doing the custom EC firmware. Have only used it for about 10 min now, but makes it so much bearable working with the laptop.
Not sure if I need the VBIOS Flash. is it much better?
I am a complete noob at this, so scared of doing things wrong... -
I would really love to get the GS60 Pro, but the rj45 and USB near the front on the right side is a deal breaker.
Two things I've learned the hard way:
RJ45 plugs found in cybercafes often have the latching tab broken off. Putting it on the lower right means my mouse will be hitting the wire repeatedly during an MMO game forcing disconnects. Also, the Cafe's wires are often stiff so that it sticks out right into the middle of my mousepad.
USB plugs tend to be finicky, putting it near the mouse is asking for whatever is connected to be constantly being disconnected.
for right handed players anyway, which I am.
