The slower fan settings makes it much quieter and is definitely worth while.

Having the fan turn off is nice when typing an email, but a bit distracting when it turns on and off.

I agree.. personally I want the custom fan speed because it gets way too loud on simple games where the temp doesnt even reach 70C so whenever I want to play a quick game in relatively quiet place the fans are just too loud

I am looking to get the gs60-003 with 16gb ram, 128gb ssd and 1tb hdd for college. I will probably be doing some CAD, but not too often. I will also probably not use it to game. With proper care, will this laptop last me 4+ years? I don't want to have to drop another $1500+ further down the road because this one crapped out on me. Thanks

Can anyone confirm what Windows version is preinstalled on the Ghost Pro (non 3k)? I now it's 8.1 but not sure if Core, Essential or Pro. I've done a clean Win 8.1 Pro instal but can't use my OEM key extracted from the BIOS so I need to know what Win 8.1 version this laptop comes with. Anyone?

Referring to mine, it is installed with Windows 8.1 Single language, not Windows 8.1 Pro.

It's Windows 8 core, the next one up is Pro, and then WMC.
Your Win8.1 Pro cannot use the key in the BIOS, thus you will need to pay to purchase the Pro key in order to activate the OS.

I have a question regarding the battery ligth indicator at front on the right next to the wifi... Mine doesnt light up. Is this normal?
I dont remember if it used to work, but I think to remember it did. Perhaps after using the custom EC setting for the fan?

I have had the gs60 pro for about 3 weeks now and I am very very happy with it. It was a huge improvement to change the setting for the fan, and I am waiting for a new profile to be posted to update it, but appart from that it runs perfect.

Just got a nice deal. 1200€ for the gs60 pro with 870m 16gb ram 256gb ssd and 1tb hdd. So now im considering to repaste this monster. Which thermal paste is the best. I read that the ic diamond produces some scratches.

Where do you live? The best deal I could find here in Slovakia was some 1260€ for non-pro with 860m, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd and 1tb hdd.

To the people who are changing the fan tables: I noticed that you keep the temperature hysteresis at the default value of 3 degrees C. This means that when the CPU reaches 55, the fans turn on until it cools down to 52. I'd recommend you change it to something a bit larger, like 8 degrees, so that the fans stay on until the CPU cools to 47 and the annoying noise of the fans ramping up does not occur as often.

    Hi all,
I was looking for an actual owners lounge for the GS60 Ghost but this is the closest thing I could find. I was hoping you guys would be able to help me out with a question regarding the M.2 SSD.
I just ordered a GS60 Ghost-003 from the Navy Exchange. As I'm sure you know, the 003 variant has the single M.2 128gig SSD. I want to get a pair of 256gig M.2 SSD's to run in Raid 0.

There are several different types of these M.2 SSD's and I want to make sure I order the correct modules. I found this: Transcend MTS600 TS256GMTS600 M.2 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com

This 256 module is 60mm long but I see there are also 40mm long units. If someone could let me know the correct type and size I would greatly appreciate it.

I think the Bios works fine if Windows boots up. Are you able to enter the Bios during bootup with the key-combo? If not try to downgrade the Bios version.

I'm finally getting my laptop back tonight so I'll be doing new vbios's and I'll look into the fan speed as well. I wonder if it's the newer EC. I'm sure some of the earlier EC's allowed 43% for everyone then we had to move it up to 44% on later releases. I wonder if it's now locked at a minimum speed.

No, cant get into BIOS with the key combo, the screen just goes blank, then if i shut it off and restart without any key combo it boots straight into windows.
I cant downgrade because i have to get into BIOS to carry out any BIOS upgrade or downgrade. :D

All users of this card have those lags. Intel is responsible for this. I would recommend buying a new W-Lan switch with ac! Buy it from amazon and test it.

I got my laptop back last night working with new motherboard. Mix results really on the silicone lottery. My old memory used to clock to +580 and the memory on this one is coming in around +480 which is a shame. The good news it the silicone can take x2 steps of lower voltage and could possibly go lower (I'll post exact figures when I've finished testing). To me this is more useful than 100mhz extra on the mem as the temps are pretty good.
One problem that needs addressing is the CPU. With the multiplier sliders in Intel XTU set to max and - 80mV I hit 96C and throttle badly. In comparison my old one even before the repaste only ever hit 92C when encoding on handbrake. This one hits 96 within 2 mins of the Intel built in stress tester. I'm guessing this is due to a bad paste job so will look at putting Coolabratory Liquid Ultra on at the weekend. Fingers crossed that sorts it.

GS70 is a larger machine and has a little better cooling as a result. Not going to be a night and day difference but will run cooler.

Did some more testing on my laptop undervolted on the CPU and it was hitting 94C at stock speeds. Stripped her down and repasted with Coolabratory Liquid Ultra. I don't know how they put it back together in the RMA centre but I managed to get the temps down 12C at load which is a massive improvement!

Quick question for those that might know:

I'm trying to get an older USB device (CH Pro Pedals USB) to work with the GS60 and having some difficulty. The GS60 only has USB 3.0 ports, and while I know they are "technically" backwards compatible to 2.0, Windows is telling me that I need a USB 2.0 port and the device doesn't work properly. Are there any solutions for this problem?

Oddly, they work fine on my Surface Pro 3 which only has a single USB 3.0 port as well as my GT60 on both it's USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports.

So, it seems it's some sort of weird compatibility with the GS60's USB 3.0 controller.

I have even tried a complete format/reinstall to eliminate any sort of software issues. There aren't any drivers required for the device, it's simply plug and play.

    Thanks for any ideas.

I think I have a similar, but worse scenario. Had to send it in for an RMA because the laptop all of a sudden stopped booting (wouldn't even POST, so couldn't even access the bios; tried just about everything including resetting CMOS). Got it back fixed, but now the CPU can't handle max clock rate and immediately throttles down since the temps rocket instantly to 90+ celsius. Going to repaste over the weekend (if I can find my paste).
On an unrelated note, intel needs to get their together and and update their RST drivers to support (pass through) Bitlocker's eDrive. It would also be nice if MSI updated their bios/uefi to include ATA password. I'm curious if anyone has tried flashing ATASX, as I'm not sure if it's even compatible with UEFI.

Are you in England? We will have had our machines fixed at the same place? I think the paste which they use is pretty decent quality as my GPU temps aren't bad. There was a lot of there though. I'm going to get something non conductive for the GPU as there is a lot of circuitry close to the chip where as the CPU has a nice gap.

Despite my initial disappointment with the new 870m's memory overclocking ability now I've found all the stable clocks for CPU and GPU I'm actually achieving a higher Firestike score with lower memory clocks and no core overclock at a lower voltage! I'm very happy :D
Now I can finally complete tomb raider!

Perhaps the housing is too tight which causes the fan blades to rub against the side wall.
Try loosening the screw, or readjust the fan base to see if it helps.
But if the issue still persists, then you may need to contact MSI directly to obtain the replacement fan module.

The motherboard used in GS60 2PL Ghost series is the same one.
However, CPU/GPU may be different from region to region.

What's the highest speeds you've reached on the VRAM? CPU? And GPU?
And what's the overall gain compared to the stock configuration using 3DMark or other benchmarking applications?
