hey, i am contemplating between this laptop and a sager.
i have one question. a lot of reviews i've been looking at for this laptop have mentioned the flimsy/lower quality bezel on this laptop as a con. has this been an issue for any of you in terms of durability?
thanks in advance for any replies

Not at all. The bezel is thin plastic yes but I'd you want a thin laptop you have to make some sacrifices. In the grand scheme of things does it really matter?

Does anyone know what size screw I'd need to use to screw down an M.2 sata drive on the GS60? None of the screws I have seem to fit.

Just tried a different cable and got the full 108mbps. My rant still stands via wifi!

are you using an AC router? that fixed my wifi issues. although even with the AC router, the wireless N (2.4GHz) speeds are less than half of the AC (5GHz) speeds:

With speedtest.net connected to Netgear AC1750 router
    using N 2.4ghz - 25 mbps download (150 mbps connection)
using AC 5ghz - 70 mbps download (400 mbps connection)

i havent been able to test whether the 2.4 vs 5ghz makes a difference when using an N router though

Is the screw you used just one of the screws that secures the mobo or was it in the mobo where the M.2 drive gets secured? I'm installing a single M.2 drive but there's no screw on the mobo (where the M.2 drive goes) and there's no screw included with my new M.2 drive that I just ordered.

Ideally I'd like to run out to the hardware store and purchase one for the M.2 drive rather than using a screw from the mobo so the screw size would be much appreciated if anyone has it.

What speed do you get when you plug in with a wire? The hub is the virgin media superhub 2 which supposedly has AC. I'm considering getting an AC router but they aren't cheap.

    @ rshin30

I too read those reviews but after two weeks with mine I can tell you it has not been an issue. If you grab the top corners of the display and wiggle, it will flex quite a lot. I'm not sure why anyone would consider this a con though. As far as a loose or protruding bezel all I can say is mine has a perfect fit.

Ok, I've confirmed the screw is a M2 size screw. Easy to remember, eh? M2 for M.2.

At any rate, I've also found out that the Ghost 012 edition does not have 2 M.2 Sata connections. It only has one. Unfortunately, none of the specs really seemed to indicate how many it had so unfortunately that's what I ordered because I didn't need the fancier GPU.

Is it just me or does it seem like there's been a growing trend to be less detailed with specifications in product documentation?

Here is the link for MSI support and drivers etc: MSI USA - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more

That link will provide you with all of the MSI supported drivers/software etc.

I prefer the classic style start button and menu so I use this program: http://www.classicshell.net/

My laptop is not a tablet nor is it a tough screen so having a start menu is helpful.

As far as advice about undervolting or tweaking there are many here that persure every last percent of performance as I once did. I'm now of the school of thought of less tweaking is better for reliability and a lot less trouble (your mileage may vary).

all download speeds maxed at 70 mbps by my provider

    with a wire:
    69mbps avg

    with AC wifi:
    68mbps avg

    with 2.4 N wifi:
    34mbps avg

Has anyone tested whether 2.4 vs 5 ghz makes a difference? or is it just the AC on 5ghz that gets full speed?

as far as the AC router, i bought this one on amazon for half price since it's refurbished and it's been working fine for the past several months without any issues.

    1. Can someone please assist me regarding the Bios. In live update it says i have E16H2IMS.106 and on the forum i can download the newest version which is E16H2IMS.10B. Is this the same version?
On the MSI homepage it gives instructions for who doesnt use Live Update. I do use it and was wondering if it has installed it or I am being dumb?

    2. Also i used one of the silent fan firmware profiles posted here a while back and it works like a charm. However I was curious if someone has created one with the newest firmware update?

    3. Live update doesnt seem to update all drivers, as there is a new audio driver which i dont have. Any reason for that?

    4. Dragon gaming center has stopped showing any temperatures for neither GPU or CPU, all it says is N/A. Is there any reason/solution for this?
Edit: actually just saw dragon gaming center shows nothing. no fan speed or power consumption either...

    Thank you

No steam does not open on start-up and I havent run it. Also Live update keeps saying the Intel Smart Connect Technology driver needs to be updated even though it has already done so.
I am downloading the latest intel graphics driver from intel now and the Intel Smart Connect Technology driver to run manually. Perhaps that can fix it.
Even though i have no clue what i am actually doing :D

That i have already done. But when i run the Intel Smart Connect Technology driver i get the notice:
Intel Smart Connect = Platform Check Failed: Intel(R) Smart Connect device not found in Bios, or it is not enabled

starting to get more and more lost. Just wanted to update drivers...

I don't really know what that even does. Perhaps uninstall the smart connect driver all together. I don't use live update. I just keep an eye on the msi download page.

okay so intalling the new intel graphics driver fixed it.
Will avoid the live update from now on. And see what i can learn about the smart connect.
Anyway, thanks a lot for the time and help

do you know regarding the BIOS though?
I have E16H2IMS.106 is that the same as the listed E16H2IMS.10B on the MSI homepage.
Difference being the capital B instead of the 6 in the end.

    Hi!

Just got my Ghost back from having the keyboard replaced due to some water damage - and I've started to notice the HDD making spin up whirring noises quite often as I use the laptop. I wasn't gaming on it, just doing some light casual work. the whirring noises isn't loud, per se, but noticeable. It's not necessarily a bad sort of sound...but I've been hearing it an awful lot? Any ideas?

    Cheers!

P.s. Having said that, I'm actually not sure if it's the M.2 SSD or the HDD itself that's making the noise...

from what I've been told, live update is supposed to be for desktops only which is why it isnt preinstalled or posted on the GS60 driver page. that would probably explain the issues you are experiencing when updating/installing driver updates.

"DISCLAIMER: Live Update 5 utility is only intended for MSI Desktop PC related products"

i believe that is the HDD starting up. I used to hear it spin up as well when i had the silent fan profile. you could disable the HDD sleep settings in power control if you want it to always remain on, but that would lower battery life as well

    Hi,

Thanks for the upload, but it does not work for me. It goes from 0 rpm to around 3500 all the time. Could you maybe upload a mod where 44% fan speed is the lowest? Also maybe one where 45% is the lowest in case the 44% does not work.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes apparently some machines can't handle 43%.svet is looking into the issue with the newer firmwares. I'll post it when it's done.

    EDIT:

Since i'm nice here is an updated version at 44%

Well I finally re-pasted the GPU (the fan was quite stuck to the mobo, but heating it up seemed to help) and saw a nice drop in temps, but still need to undervolt the gpu. My current vbios is .21 and I'm wondering for those who are undervolting the gpu, what vbios you're using (the new .21 or old .A2) and with what rom (aka how much of an undervolt). The only one for .21 that I saw was a -75mv, and before my RMA I had -75mV with the .A2 vbios.

It's difficult to advise on vbios as chips are different. I'd go for the later vbios. I've made one called 247.rom on the newer vbios.

Are the cool and 247_v2 roms also based on the new .21 like the 247 rom? and I can't seem to recall if these would also work for 860m.... I want to say no?
Also, huge thanks on not only making and posting these, but also providing the charts for them (re-posting everything to make them easier to find):

    ROMs:
    mardoncool.rom: http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...4737-msi-gs60-ghost-ghost-pro-thread-cool.zip <- Based off of .21

    mardon's cool, coolMemOC, perf, & stock: http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...5-msi-gs60-ghost-ghost-pro-thread-vbios-s.zip <- Based off of .21
    -62mV: http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...2-msi-gs60-ghost-ghost-pro-thread-flash62.zip <- I'm guessing based off of .A2
    Sen7inel's -75mV & -50mV: http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...msi-gs60-ghost-ghost-pro-thread-gs60_870m.zip <- 95% this one is based off of .A2
    Nyceis port of -75mV to .21: http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...si-gs60-ghost-ghost-pro-thread-minus75-21.zip <- based off of .21

    Charts (clock and voltage tweaks):
    -62mV, -75mV, cool, coolMemOC, perf: http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...ghost-pro-thread-vbiosdetails_zpse0952770.jpg
    247: http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...-msi-gs60-ghost-ghost-pro-thread-247-bios.jpg
247_v2 is same as 247 except with stock clocks.

    Flash Instructions:

I'll come back and update this with whether the roms are for .A2 or .21. Also, I'll update the list with sen7inel's roms (feel free to post links below if you got em so I don't have to go searching). Maybe we'll spin this into a new thread at one point (this forum really needs a 'wiki' style page).
I should probably update this with EC/fan profiles as well.......

I was able to get an open box GS60 Pro 3k with 256GB for $1679. What a steal! The unit is in mint condition and the only thing I can complain about is there is a little backlight bleed on the top corners. Trackpad sucks too but I knew that going in. Not sure if anyone posted this before but I was able to get some results on the 3k screen calibration today. sRGB 93%, NSTC 69% and aRGB 72%. Max brightness is 305cd/m2 and contrast ratio is 650:1. This was a while back but I remember some awful numbers were posted by some reviewer before the unit was released. That review kind of swayed me away without even looking for myself. I've seen just a few of the UHD screens on some gaming laptops and in my opinion, this one is the best out of the Aorus x3+, Razer Blade and the Y50. The glare is nowhere near as bad as the Razer Blade since it doesn't have a glass panel.

Did you send it back to MSI to get the keyboard replaced? I am in need of a replacement myself

Hey mardon, I believe your cool roms are -75mV but from your last post and your sig, it seems you're using a -87mV rom? Care to share so I can add it to the list:

    Also, congrats on that score.

If it boots you completed it successfully. If you start up a program like Nvidia inspector it should also list the BIOS version if you wanted to see that the correct version was flashed.

    msinfo32, then check BIOS Version/Date:
    BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. E16H2IMS.106, 5/13/2014

Edit/Update: if this was regarding vbios, then Derek's post above regarding nvidia inspector is what you want.
