I'm trying to avoid the 970m news! I'll want it even though I can play everything at 1080p on high!

Hey guys, I just received my GS60, and I'm having this issue. Everything works great, but I'm having this issue where I can't scroll or zoom with the touch pad. The Elan icon on the taskbar shows that it registers two fingers, but it won't scroll or zoom.

Uninstall the driver and try the Samsung on from the link in my signature. See if that helps. There's also new firmware out for the touch pad, be warned it takes a bit of time to install.

Thanks! I ended up just uninstalling, and then installing an updated driver from MSI's website.

Another issue, whenever I hit alt-tab, it shows a button for SCMII. Any solutions on how to remove this from the alt-tab panel?

    Thanks again!

That's the software required to show on screen volume, or screen dimming. It's totally fine for it to be running.

They look great it's going to be a struggle to hold out! But.. If I keep the 1080p screen on the laptop and only buy the new LG 55" oled 1080p TV I should be OK.

But.. The Geek in me is saying, no Mark get a 55" 4k TV and a new laptop, you need all those extra pixels for a happier life".

I'm only just getting over the fact my new 5.1 amp now comes up DTS-MA on bluray's. Can I tell the difference? Not really

I feel like 4k will be the same at the distance I sit from the TV. I probably won't massively notice it.. But I really want it!

A tiny problem with my trackpad - I just updated the driver to the samsung one people have been recommending on here, and was going to configure some 'smart gestures'.

I don't normally use the trackpad at all since I much prefer wireless mouse - so I've just noticed that the Elan trackpad icon doesn't even appear and therefore completely inactive.

The pad itself works fine, but no fancy gestures for now. Any thoughts? Was thinking of uninstalling the program that came with it since it appears to be completely useless....

You have to go into Windows mouse settings to reactivate the icon and access the settings. It's on the last tab. If it's not there, the driver didn't install correctly

SCM is the System Control Manager and allows you to do things like turn on/off wifi/bluetooth/webcam/display and change brightness/volume/battery modes all from one spot. I can't stand it in my tab manager because I alt-tab like crazy. To get rid of the annoying tab:
Go to the startup tab in Task Manager and set status of SCM to disabled. Then just create a shortcut to it on your desktop/metro UI in case you want to use it; once you're doing using it, just right click on the icon in taskbar and hit exit.

ugh, I'm in the same boat...and I want the new CPU. I wonder how much this laptop could resell for once the new one comes out. Also, the Aorus x7 with 970m SLI would be a beast as well.

I've got to think do I get a £1000 tv and a new gs60 or a £2000 oled TV which will be amazing and keep the laptop. In reality I don't need any of these things but I think the new TV will get the most use.

Hello, I'm not entirely sure if this is where I should be posting this but hopefully it is. I recently got a GS60 Ghost and I'm having a problem with it. Every time my computer wakes up from a long sleep (over 3ish hours) it cannot find my WiFi network. It can still find other networks, just not the one I use. My phone is still connected so the internet doesn't go out, I just can't connect to it on my laptop. Each time I have to go downstairs and reset my router and it is quite frustrating. I'm not too good with solving problems like this so if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated. Again, sorry if this is posted in the wrong place and thanks for your help in advance.

I used to have that problem on my old laptop. I never did find a solution and got in the habit of just shutting it off instead of sleeping since boot times are so fast.

    Maybe try reinstalling WLAN drivers.

    Hi,

Isn't there any utility from MSI that tracks driver updates and notifies when updates are available?

Also, where to get the latest WLAN drivers for gs60 ?

MSI Live Update does this but I think I read someone say they had trouble with it as it was meant for desktops.

I'm having issues running Battlefield 3. Has anyone else experience this issue? I believe it is the graphics card crashing the application but not sure. I had it up and running for a few games with a friend. Then I had to reboot and since then I haven't been able to play. The game will start up and show the loading screen but then when the map is loaded it CRASHES!

I have the 3k-GS60-097 which has a 870m graphics card. All the drivers have been updated I have tried numerous things to get it to work but if someone has the magic sauce I would really appreciate the help. Initially i was getting a directx issue when the resolution was on max. I switched it to 1080P and then it worked better. But I have clicked into the gtx control center and told it to optimize. This happens on both multiplayer and co-op i forgot to try single player but I'm sure it would be a similar issue.

Please let me know if you need additional information.

Try forcing the igp in the nvidia control panel and see if it loads normally.

On a 55" TV you will need to be sitting roughly 5 feet away from it or closer to be able to start noticing the difference between 1080p and 4k.

IMO buying any TV at 4k is a complete waste of money.

Just for reference, i have a home theater with a high quality SONY SXRD (about $3500) projector, it projects onto a 118" diagonal screen at a 14' viewing distance. I've had numerous friends that i tested where i switched it from 1080p to 720p and very few of them could consistently identify which was 1080p and which was 720p, using the same video source.

If i were you i would absolutely save the money on the TV.

On topic. I was thinking about picking up the Ghost Pro 052, but im hearing things here and there that it pretty severely overheats?

I really love the fit/finish, etc. I just wish it had a maxwell 860m instead and it would be perfect for me. Problem is, the discount coupon from newegg is only for the 870m versions. /sigh.

    Any input?

I'm in the same boat, tempted by the -052 model with the 870m and a $100 rebate. On the plus side, I've heard that there are BIOS tweaks that can bring the temps under control. On the minus side, the 970m should be out soon (October 11?). For me, at least, it will all depend on when the 970m is announced (i.e. before the mail-in rebate expires) and whether or not the 970m version is at or under the rebated 870m price.

Yeah. I just can't justify 1800 for a laptop, regardless of specs. With the rebate and promo etc being right under 1500 is a pretty good deal, but not if its going to cook my fingers off and sound like a jet engine, since i intend to use it at work as well.

Oh well. Guess its back to the waiting game again.

Down under in Australia close to 2-3 months ago i paid $2700 AUD flat for the 870m model (not the 2k model). Alot expensiver here due to taxes and sh*t, would have been around $400 cheaper if i imported but would lose 2 year warranty... bought it on my works salary sacrifice and initially was regretting and thought the price wasnt justified either... two months later, never had a overheating issue! and play games all the time at highest settings... never looked back on paying the $2700... best decision in a laptop i ever made

I must say I really am pleased with the GS60. It does require tweaking to get the most out of but now it's amazing. Was playing BF4 at mostly ultra last night, on a laptop that thin and light is very satisfying.
Very jealous of the new 970m on the way.

    Hey Lads,

Since i was just about to pull a trigger on ghost pro, but got on hold due to possible introducion of 9xx series in near future i decided to ask local MSI subsidiary directly about the GS60 and 970m (if/when/pricing).

I did not expect any answer other than "sorry, we cant provide you with any info..." but instead i got something that would translate into english as follows:

    "Hello,
The GS60 with the 970m GPU will be available on our market as soon as nvidia officially introduce the 970m/980m."

As far as I'm informed, official introduction is planned for 8.10.2014 so i guess i can w8 a bit more

    Best,
    F.

Ps. I after getting such answer i also asked for possible models like FHD+970m or 3k+970m only but this time i did not get any info

I jumpped the newegg deal and am playing it right now. Couldn't resist the $1483 price for such configuration. I mainly play DOTA2 and during 2 hours of playing at ultra settings the GPU temperature has never gone above 80C. I'm pretty satisfied with the temp considering how slim is the machine. Only complaint is the fan can be quite noisy when the 870m kicks in.

Wall of text incoming. :( I'm an owner of a GS60 2PC-003 and have had issues with WiFi. After reading the entire thread, I carried out some tests to try to get to the bottom of whatever was happening to see if anything could be done. It seemed to me like there were a few different problems that people had, sometimes depending on what wireless router was being used.

It turned out that one single setting fixed my problem. Although it may have been a combination of other network adapter settings that gave the desired result, in toggling this setting back and forth I was able to reproduce both the problem and solution without fail.

    My setup:

    OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
Driver: Intel 17.0.6.1 ( from this page)
    Wireless Router: TP-Link N300
    Wireless Network: 2.4GHz 802.11b/g
    Wireless Security: WPA2

My particular problem centered around wireless network responsiveness while the GPU was under some sort of load. As an example, I loaded up World of Warcraft. With High quality settings, the GPU fan would kick on, and after 30 seconds or so, ping times and client responsiveness would drop, before I'd ultimately be disconnected after some indeterminate amount of time. Dropping quality settings would improve ping times, to my amazement, and setting to Low quality basically eliminated the problem, though this would not be a workable solution.

As other people had changed settings for the network adapter itself, I began as well, changing a setting, which reset the adapter, and then testing back in the game client to see if there was a change.

My fix location was in the Advanced tab of the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 properties in Device Manager; the setting which completely eliminated my problem was changing the "802.11n Channel Width for 2.4GHz" setting to "20MHz Only".

Just to be sure, I switched this setting back and forth TEN times to ensure it wasn't coincidence or a simple reset of the wireless adapter. I could recreate the problem without fail each time with the setting on "Auto". I have NO idea why this setting would make a difference when the GPU is under load, but hopefully if someone else is having an identical problem this might help.

I'd recently begun having problems after messing with settings at my in-laws house, where I'd run into other WiFi problems, so I'm unsure of what the collection of settings was before I started having trouble at home. It seemed to have worked before, so I can only conclude that I made some adjustments which my home network did not like. My settings of other settings I've read about, in case it's a combination of them:

    802.11n Channel Width for 2.4GHz - 20MHz Only
    802.11n Channel Width for 5.2GHz - 20MHz Only
Ad Hoc QoS Mode - WMM Disabled
    U-APSD support - Disabled
    Transmit Power - 5. Highest
    Wireless Mode - 4. 802.11b/g

Any followup or comments are welcome.

I was going to order from gentech to get the free thermal paste and get them to do the hardware upgrades (16GB RAM and 2nd 128GB SSD) but this price is really tempting - especially with a free 30 day trial of newegg premium that would let me return it if the 970s come out within my price range.

Edit: crap, if I do the $100 mail-in rebate to get the price down, I won't be able to return it to Newegg. curses, foiled again!

    Hello guys!

Maybe this has been discussed before and workaround exists, but fast searching gave me no result.
I have GS60 2PC-289 (i7/8GB RAM/GF860/128GB + 1TB). The problem is that HDD keeps spinning only for 1-2 minutes and then spins down.
I have checked all Win 8 power settings and disable power control in Intel's software but had no effect - HDD still ignores Win settings (which set for 20 minutes) and spins down.

P.S. No matter if laptop is on AC or on battery.

Is there any workaround for this issue?

    Many thanks in advance :)

Im very satisfied with my GS60 Pro but have got one issue that i wonder if anyone else has experienced.

My CPU is usually like 40 C in idle so the fans can chill at 2800rpm, but every now and then i hear the CPU fan at 3700 RPM because the CPU temp is in the 60s C. I find it strange since i don't have any heavy process ongoing at all. If i restart my computer it goes back to normal idle temp.

This happens from time to time and it annoys me when doing light browsing or whatever, CPU shouldn't randomly get 60C hot.

Anyone familiar with this and maybe found something preinstalled causing this or any other clues? CPU usage is usually low like 14% when i notice this..

Thanks for reply. Yes, I think it will work, but... Is it the only way?
Is this behavior normal? Looks like that system power setting affect only system disk (ssd) and have no influence to secondary hdd :(

I have a MSI GS60 2PC-005UK 860M, for the majority of the time it's been great, but I have this intermittent issue when playing games (Battlefield 4, Far Cry 3) where the game will freeze at random points (I have to close the program down and restart.). It runs fine in non GPU mode.

I have the latest BIOS and VBIOS and latest nvidia drivers. Do I have a faulty GPU?

It's likely that your GPU was overheating which caused itself to throttle down.
What graphic quality setting did you use? If you had it set to high then you need to try medium or low to verify.
RMA isn't required, but you can do repasting using IC diamond to lower the temperature by a few degrees.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, I set it high on BF4 and Optimal on FC3. I'm not sure I'm capable of repasting tbh, is there another way I can control this?

It may be in the thread already, but I wasn't able to find it, so sorry if this is a repeat, but... does anyone know the brand and model number of the 8GB RAM module that comes in the stock GhostPro-052? I'd like to be able to order a matching 8GB stick to get 16GB in dual channel. Thanks!

It's 1600mhz CL11 1.35v ram, any brand should match that if the same rating. The exact brand can vary but you can use CPU-Z to double check without opening the machine.

I don't have the machine yet, I was hoping to order memory at the same time as ordering the machine :) But thanks for the info!

I am considering buying this laptop. I'm curious what issues with the laptop people have had, how they were handled by support, and the kind of reliability/dependability to expect from this laptop. I know it hasn't been around long, but I'm curious about the experiences people have had. Thanks in advance!

Yep, it's normal.... I have the 2PC version too and I can fully sympathise.

The sounds coming from the HDD drive me nuts from time to time (I'm super sensitive to noise...wish I wasn't), but yep - no way around it. It's built in to the HDD firmware. I tried all sorts of programs and none of them could fix the HDD spin up/spin down pattern....

    Please do!

Still debating whether or not I should use programs like KeepAliveHD or just let the secondary HDD do its own thing. If it keeps on spinning I suppose the drive would wear and that's no good in terms of its life span, but it's also difficult to judge how much damage the constant (every 10 seconds) spin up does to the drive itself...

Realtek HD Audio driver 6.0.1.7344 available from MSI

    https://cms.msi.com/service/download/nbdriver-25574.html

    _____________

Take the HDDs out of the notebook and put them in USB enclosure for storage.

Put only SSDs internally.Lighter, quieter, less power consumption and 4K file reads and writes are much faster.

About 80% of daily disk access are small file reads and writes measured with Microsoft's DiskMon

The 4K IOPS at all Queue Depths are the most important info displayed in disk benchmarking ;not the large sequential numbers that manufacturers like to flaunt.

Done some testing. In my Ghost i have HGST HTS721010A9E630 HDD. It's default APM value is 1 (minimun power consumption) - which means "Go idle after 5 seconds since last I/O request".
Setting APM to 254 ("maximum perfomance") have fully eliminated noisy clicking of parking heads. HDD doen't spin down also :)
So, it is first useful solution :)

Tomorrow i'll try to disable hdd's APM and check what will happen.
Then i will write i guide here :)

EDIT: IMHO it does no/very little damage to HDD if it keeps on spinning. Permanent start-stop cycles is more hazardous to HDD.
