I have MSI GS60 with GTX 970M (which is faster and hotter than GTX 965M). Temperatures are fine, both inside and outside chassis. There is no throttling under realistic use (like gaming or benchmarks, you need to do something silly like run Furmark + Prime95 together, but there virtually all notebooks do throttle).
Maxwell GPUs are cool pretty much in every notebook out there. I get 70s-80s C in the heaviest games, 60s C in less demanding ones.
What can make troubles are Haswell CPUs but MSI GS60 has probably the best CPU cooling that's in thin gaming notebook. Most of time when gaming CPU is in 60s-70s C (you never hit 90s C with normal use, unlike other similar notebooks like Razer Blade 2015, Gigabyte P34/P35 or Clevo P650).
So with just GTX 965M temperatures should be even better.
What will bug you though is fan noise while idle. MSI GS60 is noisier than other similar notebooks while idle (though it's more quiet under the load). -
Hi there,
I've been using my GS60 2PC Ghost for month and had some troubles with my Intel 7260 AC card. Now almost everything is OK, the last problem I have comes when the CPU is under heavy load.
My Wi-Fi drops and no more packet can go through. Ping first get realy high then can't reach my AP. If I limit the CPU frequency to 60% in the power management settings the problem disapear. When I play a game like Starcraft 2, the same problem happens and disapear when I check the Vsync option. I think that the limited framerate helps to prevent overheating.
The thing is that both CPU and GPU are still cool. The GPU is at 68°c at full speed and the CPU is stuck at 74°c at full speed. But I think that the wireless card is affected by the temperature.
When the computer is cold, I can play for some time before the problem happens. I've done some testing using ping on both my AP and Google DNS server while starting 4 Unigine Valley Benchmarks. I started four of them as a single won't use enough CPU power to trigger the wi-fi drop.
In regular desktop usage the ping is really stable and there's no problem.
I would really like to know if anybody here has a similar problem, also if you know where the wireless card is in the laptop, maybe it would help me to find out where the problem comes from.
I've RMA'd my laptop for a problem with the Wi-Fi which turned to be a configuration problem (UASPD and my AP). I hope they didn't switched the card with a disfunctional one. When the computer came back it was infected by a 2013 virus known by almost every antivus on earth and had a missing screw, so I have some doubts about the quality of the work done during this trip in Poland.Last edited: Apr 1, 2015 -

Have you updated the Intel WLAN driver? What about router firmware? -
My CPU fan often turns off and on when my laptop is basically just idling. Like right now I only have my browser running, cpu temp is steady 43C but CPU fan goes from 3096RPM to 0RPM for 5 sec, then it spins up to 3946rpm, lands on 3096 again then back to 0RPM for 5 seconds, over and over.. Any idea what could cause this?

Hello,
Yes I'm running on 17.13.11.5. I also tried older drivers from Intel and MSI. My router is provided by my IAP and is automatically updated. But I don't see how it could be involved. I had to disable UASPD, my AP can't deal with it. The problem only appears under heavy load.
My BIOS is updated, as my EC. Everything is up to date, the system is a fresh installation from W8.1 which came directly from Microsoft website. I tried to play with the drivers, the settings of the driver, the power management options and nothing helped but limiting the CPU usage.
Moreover right after turning the PC on in the morning, the problem disappear for some time.
I'm connected in 2.4Ghz using 802.11n and I'm using WPA-Personnal CCMP. The theorical bandwidth is shown at 108Mbps and sometimes drops to 72Mbps for few seconds. The effective speed is 60Mbps with drops to 20mbps for few seconds. I'm few walls away from the AP and I'm verry happy with the speed. The problem is that the Wi-Fi totally stops (100% ping fail) in some cases, when I play a game without FPS limit and when I start some CPU benchmark. -

I'm using Intel Wireless ProSet 17.15.0.5
http://www.station-drivers.com/inde...ireless-WiFi-Software-Version-17.15.0.5-WHQL/
WPA2 AES is the only setting that will yield full N and AC link speeds
I disabled wireless in the settings of the Modem/Router supplied by my ISP and attached my own Netgear R7000 AC1900 dual band router -
Thank you
It was a smart advice, I thought that the CPU was struggling and can't work for the wireless encryption. I switched to WPA2-AES as you said but didn't help.
I think that's a design flaw. The wireless card is too close to the CPU fan and It's probably beeing overheated.
On most games the limiting factor is the GPU so the CPU doesn't work enogh to overheat the internal card. But on some games and with the benchmark software, the CPU is the limiting factor and run at full speed.
The problem mostly occurs when the computer is plugged. That's when the trubo boost comes in and put some cores close to to 90°c. The best thing is probably to test when the battery is full as I heard that the laptop can use both the battery and the AC to increase the power.
If you have some time to spend and a GS60, I invite you to run a program that takes your 4 cores close to 3.2Ghz for a minute and watch the ping. -

I no longer use an Intel wireless card in my GS60
The original AC-7260NGW had too many issues so I replaced it with a Killer N1525 that I'm very pleased with,
I tried an Intel AC-7265NGW for about 10 days in the GS69-2PL but went back to the Killer N1525.
The AC-7265 was better than the AC_7260NGW but not by a whole lot.
I still use mini pcie AC-7260HMW cards in an older GT780DX and a desktop without issue. -
The Wireless Card is right next to the CPU fan xD!
I didn't have exactly that issue but many issues with the intel ac card!
So i switchet to the killer, no problems since then! Probably the only way to go these days!
But Actually 74°C doesn't seem that bad!
Did you try editing the ScanWhenAssociated entry in the registry! Helped me a little bit, but i didn't have those 100% drops! But you could try it anyway!

Do the thing at: " Windows 8.1 and Windows 8's second solution" -
Thank you very much for these answers
Very interesting. I'm going to look for the spec of this card. Intel says their card has an operating temperature range of 0-80°c. Maybe atheros has a wider range. It must be very close to the operating temperature as the ping drops then come back then drops etc... If it was way beyond the card would stop and never get out of sleep.
I did it recently, had some improvement but didn't do anything about full drop. Thanks for sharing BTW, it took me month to find this trick
Also the temperature can go up to 90°C when the trubo boost get involved.
In a normal heat context, the card now performs fine. I reach 150mbps in effective file transfert when I'm in the same room as the router, which is operating in 802.11N mode.
Lets investigate a bit deeper. I'll keep you posted. -
Here are the news
Killer support told me that. This is 10°c below the Intel max operating temperature.
http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/laptop/69257-msi-gs60-2pc-ghost/?page=2
It seems that this website experienced the same problem a year a ago and said MSI fixed the problem with their custom driver.
I tried once again to rollback to the MSI drivers but it didn't help.
Maybe it's a power related issue, like an agressive ACPI profile. But I've been playing with power options and no significant change happened.
Putting the laptop on a pillow under heavy load significantly increases the ping. Putting it back on my knees
makes it go down to 1ms then it slowly increases to get stable arround 130ms. A big fan blowing on the bottom of the laptop had no significant effect.
I've looked closer to the Killer 1525 and the Intel 7260, using photos from eBay. It seems that the Killer card antena plugs go to the chip through the board, where then Intel plugs go to the chip through surface cable.
That's the only difference I've noticed. Maybe the killer thermal shielding is more efficient due to this small difference. Maybe the temperature makes a part of the antena to expand putting effort on the connectors which leads to a poor signal.
Has anyone noticed a difference in the "strenght" of the plugs of the antena, between the Intel and the Killer card? Like if one was more subject to disconnect than the other?
I'm going to try to put a heat sink right under the wireless card. -
Flipping the laptop sometimes causes ping timeout for 5 to 10 sec then it get back to normal.
The problem occurs when the laptop is close to vertical, I would say 110° from normal position, like if you were pushing your screen away.

That's an argument in favor of an antena connector problem. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
That could just be the dead point for your wireless antennae, orientation has an impact. Try moving your router into a different alignment.
-
I have not noticed any difference! But if the connectors themself or their thermal insulation's efficiency, shouldn't there be problems with bluetooth aswell? Since its exactly the same plug right next to it!
Maybe you have a Problem with the antenna cable itself? Badly placed inside the case and moving the screenhinges work the cables over time? Altough i repasted a week ago i can't exactly think of the exact placement!
I think you should just open that thing and have a look!
Since connection gets back to normal 5-10 sek still beeing in the same orientation i don't think thats the issue -
I solved this by updating to the latest EC firmware from MSI.Kevin@GenTechPC likes this.

Hi all, I'm currently deciding between the Ghost Pro 044 and 064. Does anyone own the 064 with the i7-4720HQ? I've read several threads which stated the 4720HQ ran unusually hotter than the 4710HQ, seeing as how they're virtually identical chips.
I'm basically trying to decide if $100 extra for the 064 model is worth it for an additional 4GB RAM, 3GB VRAM and the 4720HQ... -
Sounds like a pinched wire. Have you opened it up yet?
-
Yes. VRAM is priceless cuz you can't upgrade it. 4 more gigs of sys ram is nice and a small boost to your processing speed. But the VRAM is the real reason I'd spend another 100.

Hello,
Wich fan can I bought to replace the fan of my CPU?
I have fan version paad06015sl N223.

Hi! Just a little update - I got the issue with my screen fixed when I contacted MSI Poland (because apparently Germany doesn't have one) and they had me send it over. It's back with me now and still hasn't blanked out yet, but we'll see. They didn't really specify how they fixed it though, shame.
Currently experiencing some problems with the steelseries engine software used to configure the keyboard though. I just can't seem to change the colour of the backlight for some reason? As in, I'll set a blue layer to active, but my keyboard is still backlit in red.
Any thoughts? -
Perform an EC Reset.
1. Unplug your power supply
2. Remove the battery
3. Let it sit like that for a half an hour
4. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds
5. Reinsert the battery and reattach the power supply
6. See if that fixes your problem.
7. If it doesn't Uninstall the Steelseries engine.
8. Repeat steps 1-5.
9. Power on and reinstall Steelseries engine.
10. Restart and see if that fixes it.
11. Let us know how it worked out for you. -
Wouldn't hitting the button on the side while unplugged accomplish the same thing?
-
Some models have an EC reset button. Some don't, so I provide these steps because I'm lazy and I don't want to message back and forth to find your model number. They both accomplish the same thing. But if the button doesn't work for you, try this method. After which you can try to clear the CMOS, but I would need your model number in case of that...

Does anybody know how I can get the rweverything+phereins tool get to work with the actual ec 507? My question refers to a gs60 with gtx860m, i5 4200h.
Thx -
Little question here. I was searching but I couldn't find real user experience. I want to buy this computer but I may use it in the library sometimes. Will it get too loud on browsing or simple programming? Thanks.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
No during light use it should be quiet so long as you sit it on a nice flat surface. Make sure it is in balanced or if you are really worried power saving mode and you are good to go.

hey, does anyone know if the steelseries engine can affect the keyboard original layout? can you practicaly assign different layout only by replacing the key's assignment (letter) via the steelseries? personally I touch type, so I won't mind lacking the phisical indication of the letter key. for example: is it possible to program the Z to work as Y?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Are you trying to emulate the layout of a different country? If that is the case then you can just change the keyboard language in windows and it will do it for you.
-
oh yea, you're right my language layout is the same always. but english is in qwertz layout and I want to change it to qwerty. is it possible to do it via the steelseries engine?
-
do you mean that I should change the system language to my language and it will automatically change the layout according to the country? how to tell?
-
I understand it's a matter of windows system language = keyboard setting layout such as "English (US)", I'lI look it up on windows.
I want to buy gs60-2PMi581. it's not ips, but does anyone know what panel it is? I can't find a proper review for the specific model and I have no idea if there are several TN panels for this model. do they use the same TN panel? -
Hello everyone! Just bought GS60 with 860m kepler. I'm planning to modify vcard bios, so there is a very important question: what would happen if it go wrong? There is a way to repair PC video card with broken bios, but this is a laptop. Theoretically, I can repair the same way, becsuse GS60 has second vga in cpu, but I'm not sure. So, do you know guys for sure, is there a way to repair broken bios? I really don't want to risk
Thanks! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Change the keyboard layout (not system language they are different) in windows and yes the layout will change to what ever you like. -
Hello guys!
First of all many thanks to all of you guys especially mardon and Sen7inel for all their work on making the tweaks available for everyone.
I would like to ask for advice.
I live in Italy, and the prices here are way higher than they are in the US.
I just bought a refurbished/returned Ghost pro on amazon UK with the 870m and raid 0 240GB SSD for around 950 euro despite knowing that it's an old version. I know there are the new 9xx versions available now that does not suffer from the heat problems of the 870, but I couldn't find anything affordable.
Unfortunately if I were to buy from the states, all I could save by finding better deals is wasted because of what I would be forced to pay back in taxes/delivery to Italy.
So the advice I need from you guys that have had this notebook for almost a year now is:
Does it still work well despite being used for gaming at high temps? How many of you had technical issues?
I still have the 30 days return policy, so I'll obviously run all the tweaks and stress test it as much as I can before making a final decision, but I'd like to hear your opinions on the matter and especially if any of you know of an alternative that you think would offer similar hardware at a similar price but without the heat problems. -
Meaker - what about my question about the panels? where is best to ask? I didn't find an answer to this question in the entire forum. there where many people before me that wanted to find out more about the hierarchy of panels in the lower priced gs60.
sorry for my english. -
Greetings,
I have researched what I did not understand and now feel better in my initial model selection GS60 Ghost Pro-064 from all indications in every aspect. Could someone please address my configuration issues?
1. Is "16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3L/1600 Dual Channel MemoryStandard" good enough (I hope it would be excellent) or do I need to spend $49 more for the "16GB Kingston HyperX Impact DDR3L/1600 Dual Channel Memory"?
Is there any objective difference or failure history of the Standard ram?
2. You can Raid 0 two M.Sata drives and then have a choice for the hard drive.
...a. If I got the same drive as the sum of the Raid 0 M.Sata drives, could I raid 0 it again, or would it make any speed difference at all compared to a ssd speed anyway (in most situations)?
...b. Would my data storage drive best be the cheapest 1T 7200, which is faster than 5400 anyway? OR
...c. Would the raiser fast Samsung Evo 500gb drive be the best and only $129 more than the 1T 7200 drive?
It is hard for me to judge how much each configuration would yield or even which one is even possible. I assume anything goes, almost, but for what gains if any is unknown.
3. Since the GTX 970 card will be fast, even though 6gb vram, should I even consider Raid 0 to make it closer to the edge of throttling? It is not a GTX 980 that requires 500 w power and it is refined. So even though it is only a mild concern, I would like expert feedback as to the probabilities of throttling happening while not working in 3d animation.
THANKS! -

What TN panel does yours has? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
1. It's the same speed, therefore you do not need to waste money to buy another set.
2. You can get the same drive, or mix them as long as they are the same size. Most of users preferred to have identical drives within the same array. Differences matter because the whole array's performance/capacity are hindered by the slowest/smallest drive.
Get the SSD.
3. RAID 0 will help out with data read/write with an application, and good GPU will help with visual quality in games so they are two different area. Some high end games may not permit you to play at high quality settings with 970 but not 980.
Throttling can happen as components start to overheat, but you can reapply thermal compound, change thermal pads, and add cooling station to increase airflow. -
the question is does ALL GS60 (not PRO/3/4k) have the SAME TN PANEL.
I want to buy it. I found 2 detailed review for gs60 that is not PRO/3k/4k. in one review they mentioned good quality 330 nits TN panel. on the other they mentioned low brightness.
this model gs60-2pm i581 sells in europe.
what is the brightness, contrast, gamut etc. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
It's really hard to answer you this question because there could be multiple sources of supplier used by MSI, unless every reviewer actually posted the panel model individually otherwise no one really know except MSI themselves. -
suppliers? you mean manufacturers. it's ridiculous really. thanks. so I should contact MSI global? what's best?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
MSI will give you the same answer, different batches could have similar but different makes of panel due to supply issues. -
thanks! so it's possible that i'll recieve low quality, low luminance TN panel if i'll buy the affordable models such as gs60-2pm OR gs60-2pc?.. there's no way to find out in advance?
by that it's better to buy new high end lenovo with a guarantee. which models have the PLS? only the gs60 PRO? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You can contact the reseller and ask when you are ready to order
But the PLS screens are very nice. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Yes, it's best to contact local MSI, or the reseller you're inquiring to purchase from, that way you get the most accurate information. -
i'm tierd, i hope europe is better in costumer service. but i really doubt that they'll know more detailes about basic luminance, gamut and stuff.
anyone knows a good store in germany/austria/nederland that usually provides technical data about the screen quality per model (luminance, colors, contrast, panel model etc.)? pleass share!
thanks
