The Kingston HyperX made out in 3 version 1600-1866-2166MHz.. So if i buy the last one i will have a speed 2166? this is the SPD?
But why it has more PINs Than M.2? also M.2 has 3 section and this post has only 2..

Meaker@Sager Company Representative
2133mhz and yes it would attempt to run at that speed but it's not officially supported by intel so don't expect support if it does not work.
-
Unfortunately, unlike msata, M.2 has dozens of different configurations. Some are compatible with sata slots and others pcie. There's also different "keys" that fit into the slot and in general they will work as long as they are M.2 and are compatible with either the sata or pcie form factor. There are also 4 different lengths... My short explanation will not do it justice though, as the form factor is so in depth that they have many full page articles on all the differences. It'll probably take you over an hour of reading to get the full gist of it.
Imo, M.2 is a big disappointment since they originally hyped it as being "more compatible". It would have been better if they left sata drives with msata and M.2 with PCI-e only. Heck, at least you can find 1TB mSAta drives - the max M.2 sata is still 500GB -
Yeah... i was thinking about M.2 PCIe because as i see from pictures our key is like M.2... and speeds are 3-4 times better... Also do we have a limit on mSata? Because MSI say up to 256GB...
-
No, that's just the size that MSI offers. You should be able to put 2x 500GB M.2 in there. There's no 1TB version yet
-
Btw, if you buy the 2166, please let us know how it turns out. I've always been reluctant to upgrade since the increased latency in the higher frequency chips pretty much negates the speed advantages. Seeing that the one you are buying is CAS 11, the same as the stock RAM, there might actually be a significant performance increase.
Cinebench, a game's fps and a game's load time both before and after the upgrade would be very useful. -

That's good, perhaps you resolved something that caused the symptom during assembly process. -

The processor cannot handle speeds more than 1600MHz, see below link for official spec page.
http://ark.intel.com/products/78930/Intel-Core-i7-4710HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_50-GHz
When you put in a 1866/2133MHz module, it will simply run at 1600MHz, and you cannot change this setting in the BIOS but best to check reviews first before making purchase.
However, according to Kingston, their memory can perform auto-overclocking internally, see below.
http://www.kingston.com/us/hyperx/memory/impact -
I check that auto-overclocked mode so i will give them a try!
I would change them in a month and i will inform you! -
I originally posted this in the "owner's lounge" which I realize now probably wasn't the appropriate place for it:
Thinking to pick this laptop up from Amazon for $1700. I have a MacBook Pro 13" 2014 and a Dell XPS 13. Looking for something that can handle gaming at 1080p and mid-high settings. The Gigabyte P35X v3 kind of caught my eye as well, though I'm not sure about buying a Gigabyte because I'm unfamiliar with the brand. The 980m over the 970m is very tempting though. I thought about the Razer Blade but am worried about the heat issues it seems to have. Is the Ghost Pro 606 better with it's heat management? I'd honestly stick with the MacBook line if they weren't such a poor choice for gaming. Everything else about my MacBook is perfect. Even the 15" retina pro refresh has a very weak graphics card in comparison to the 970m and the Mac gaming library pales in comparison to Windows. Not to mention its $2,5oo price tag.
Any advice for someone who is very much on the fence at the moment? Looking for something that's no more than five pounds (closer to 4 would be better) and has at least a 970m, if not a 980m. Only want a 1080p screen, as that's all that seems practical. How is the screen on this machine by the way? -
Greetings jgrace1984.... there aren't a ton of options in the category you mentioned and you named the top players. I went with the GS60 (this is actually my second one, I liked the first one so much I upgraded when the 970m was released). Temps aren't a concern, it's lightweight and well built (all metal and feels solid but it won't feel as solid as a MacBook Pro). But, like you said, it will run circles around the GPU in the Macbooks. Screenwise, the 1080p IPS screen is absolutely gorgeous and a joy to use.
Gameplay wise it will play anything released to date at either high or ultra. The 980m would of course give you a bit longer life at higher settings, but the P35x runs hot when equipped with the 980m... it's just too much heat for that chassis.
Razer I wrote off because it is no where near as upgradeable as the GS60 (I've got a 128GB M.2 SSD, a 500GB M.2 SSD, and a 1TB 2.5" SSD in my GS60), can't come close to that with the Razer unfortunately.
Well, those are my quick thoughts and why I went with the GS60. I've been very happy with the line since last April when I got my first one.
Good luck in your search! -
Thanks for the response, be77solo! That makes my decision easier. Looks like I'll most likely be trading in my MacBook for this. Another thing that pushed me over the edge was some recent purchases from the always amazing Steam Summer Sale.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
All they do is present 2133mhz as the SPD, as do all other high speed kit producers. All of MSI systems will attempt to run the speed but not all CPUs will, most will yes but not all. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
There's no guarantee on this and MSI doesn't endorse such use.
So in the end, the result varies. -
As i have checked out this video i realize that maybe i will spent 20% more pound to get nothing..... So MAYBE i will go for 1600MHz that have CL9 instead of 2133MHz that have CL11... Any opinion?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
1866mhz is the sweet spot as the cherry on the cake for haswell, as the final upgrade to round off performance in all situations.
-
Watch out, those Steam Sales will get you ha.... gets me every Summer and Winter! It'll definitely be a change from your MacBook, both good and bad, but without a doubt you'll love playing those games on the GS60 magnitudes more.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
You can spend the money and get 1866MHz version, but don't expect 2133 to work for sure. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
There is also a tiny chance the 1866mhz mem wont work on the 4xxx CPUs too since intel only speed bins the cores up to 1600mhz memory. The 5xxx series are guaranteed to 1866mhz though.
-
Well I just got a killer deal on an open box broadwell version. Hopefully it's in good shape. I think I'll be able to sell my old one for $50 less, so I'm pretty excited about it. Even if it's $150 less, it's worth it for the CPU and Vram upgrade(3GB to 6GB). The only thing I'm not optimistic about is the 4k screen.
Some things I'll be putting in it are dual Evo 850 500GB M.2 drives in RAID. I have one already, I'm just waiting for $120 in ebay bucks on July 3rd to buy the other. I'll probably also put faster ram in it since Broadwell officially supports 1866Mhz. I'll be sure to record all the benchmarks for everyone. I might try 2133 just for the heck of it. We'll see. Any of you resellers try 2133 in Broadwell yet? -
Hello,
I am expecting to buy MSI GS60 2PC for occasional gaming and for my work at school
Can this laptop last more than 1-2 years ? Does it get hot and shut down after a year, like some other laptops ?
and I have seen several complains about the wifi from past year, is it fixed now ?
thanksLast edited: Jun 27, 2015 -
I have the ghost pro. I am having trouble with the temperature. I don't think the right fan is working at all. (this is all while gaming) There is a noticeable difference in touching the top left side versus the top right side above the keyboard. also, the left ventilation port has a good amount of hot air blowing out that side. The right side is not blowing out much air at all. When I check the temps under the gaaming center the CPU is 80-90 C and the GPU says UMA (not sure what that means?)
I just bought this computer a few days ago from Amazon. Is this an issue or is this behaving normally? Right now just web surfing the machine is warm to my legs on the right side. -
The fan should be at full blast at those temps. I wonder if the right fan profile was installed on your unit. You can troubleshoot with the fan tool that was posted a few pages back. It might be the other thread. I'm on my phone or I'd link it for you. Definitely not normal behavior though. Mine gets warm from surfing the web but I intentionally keep my fan off until 70ish degrees.
-
Do you
do you recall about how far back that was? I can't seam to find it. -
If GPU doesn't show temperature, this means your notebook is using integrated Intel Graphics, the one that's on the CPU chip. That could explain high CPU temperatures (due to simultaneous CPU and GPU load on Intel chip).
Try checking Nvidia Control Panel "preferred graphics processor" settings to make sure you use Nvidia GPU, at least while gaming (I use it all the time myself, iGPU is just useless for me).
Though CPU fan is right, GPU fan is left, so in that case you would get the inverted fan behavior symptoms.Last edited: Jun 30, 2015 -

It depends how you define left and right
but I agree it looks like the Intel igp is being used.
-
Curious, it should also tell you the fan RPM, ie 3300+... that will tell you if the fan is actually spinning. What does it say there?
Sounds like either a faulty fan or a bad thermal paste job. Tell us the temp and fan speed and what you are doing at the time and we can help further. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Observe the LED color on the power button:
Power LED/ GPU Mode LED
- Glowing blue when integrated GPU is activated.
- Glowing amber when NVIDIA GPU is activated.
If you confirm that the iGPU is being used by your application, then add the program executable onto whitelist under Nvidia Control Panel, then set Nvidia as preferred graphics processor so the system will force dGPU while using that particular software.
Additionally, you can update Nvidia graphics driver to the most recent version by visiting the official link below.

Does anyone know if the 128GB SSD that comes with the MSI can be replaced? Is the 128GB SSD a 2.5" hard drive?
I currently have a 960GB SSD 2.5" hard drive which I would like to put in the MSI GS60 to replace the standard 128GB SSD. Is this possible? -
only the tb hard drive is 2.5". The 128 gb drive is m.2 and is a major pain to replace. The 2.5" is pretty easy to get to though.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
There are 2 M.2 slots available, so you can add one and use it as D drive, or you can redo the drives as a single RAID 0 array.
As Xentar said, it is difficult to replace the drives, but it can be done. There are a lot of fragile ribbon connectors that you are going to encounter so please proceed with caution. -
Hello, I have just bought gs60 2PC and I'd like to know if my cpu temps are normal ??
all cores are around 50 degrees during internet surfing with chrome ..... and I have a cooler fan under the laptop !!! :s
Fan speed is always around 3333 RPM :s
I ve heard people saying they have around 35-45 degrees
+ I have few issues with the screen when the screen is dark I see light artifacts at the cornersLast edited: Jul 3, 2015 -
I have horrible scores with 3dmark ( 5 000 with skydive) even a 840m scores better than my i7 4720qh + 860m i am really disappointed by this laptop
EDIT: sorry it was because I forgot to install dx11 now it scores as it should I think ( 10 000 with skydive)Last edited: Jul 4, 2015 -
I have GS60 with Win 7 and I´m planning to upgrade to Win 10.
Did anyone try Win 10 (technical preview) on GS60 yet? All ok? I just saw some warning about bluetooth and that doesn´t bother me, never used bluetooth on any of my devices...
Perfectly fine.
For a comparison, 15 inch Macbook Pro I own runs up to 100 degrees (while gaming) and record temperature I managed with my 13 inch Macbook Pro (while stress testing) was 120 degrees. GS60 has way better cooling system even if a louder one.

Ok.. but the noise is a little bit annoying :s
I hope it will go down to 2800 rpm in winter -
You can install a fan tool to disable the fan at certain temperatures. Look back in the thread for the link. I have mine set to keep the fan off until the CPU gets 60ish degrees
-
I have tried this:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=255972.0
And the tool doesn't work when I click on it nothing opens ( I have checked .NET Framework 4.0 I have it) :s -
Same for me but people in that topic said you have to switch your local system language from whatever it is to English and than it works. No idea, I didn´t try.
-
Thanks, I switched region to US and it worked. Now I have 2800 rpm most of the time which is OK.
-
Is it possible to use the 2.5" TB drive as the primary C Drive which windows runs off? If that is possible then I can replace the 1TB 2.5" drive with my SSD 2.5" drive to run windows from, which would essentially make the 128gb m2 ssd redundant in this case.
-
Yes, this is how I have mine set up. C: is 2.5” SSD running Windows, D: is original M.2 SSD, and E: is an additional M.2 SSD I added.
-
Hi all,
I bought one of these used, a 4700/860M model. Temperatures are pretty hot idle, 51-55C. Everything is running on the Intel display, and CPU is barely being used, sitting at 6w, but temperatures are still rather warm.
Do you think it just needs to be opened and dusted + repasted? From what I've read, idle temps should be 10C lower than this... -
I would say pretty normal. I don´t use Dragon Center anymore and I don´t have any other temperature tool (simply not needed, GS60 cools itself just fine) but
a) I never even saw 41 C (10 lower as you describe) I think,
b) 51-55 C is fine for idle (or low activity) CPU temp; check temperatures with heavy activity and if temperatures stay okay...
Or clean it if you like.
-
What's the ambient temperature where you are? If it's pretty hot it will obviously have an effect.
I've got a brand new one and I am hovering around the 40's when idle.
I've tweaked the fans to not kick in until it gets hot too, so that's with no fan running. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's worth giving it a repaste when getting a 2nd hand laptop.
-
New GS60 860M 3k owner - thought I'd share my thoughts after a few days with it.
- The screen is excellent. A few scaling issues with the 3k resolution, but windows mainly is fine at 150% scaling. Definitely the best screen i've ever had.
- Build quality is good, the screen and housing is a little creaky but the base is very solid and reassuring. Amazed how they fitted so much into such a thin laptop too.
- Sound isn't bad for a laptop. The sound blaster cinema software does seem to help (for movies and games at least), and i'm normally very sceptical of software based audio enhancements.
- Keyboard is a little annoying. Odd windows key placement and no double size return key are a bit confusing. Backlight looks nice, but isn't that useful as light doesn't shine through the keys. Not played with the config software yet.
- The SSD which was a big attraction for me makes performance and especially boot times great. First machine I have had with one, and don't think I could go back now.
- Software - not too much bloatware for once. Load of norton stuff, which you pretty much expect these days, but uninstalled fairly painlessly.
- Fan Noise - out of the box was a bit annoying, I don't see why the fans need to be that loud, or on at all when the cpu is idling. Bit of investigation and I've installed the MSI silent option fan control and now have the fans kicking in at about 50 c which is much better. Fans kick in when running the GPU obviously, and are a bit loud, but I expected that. I wish the 'ECO' modes did something to the fan settings as well - i'd expect an 'office' or 'presentation' mode to make the laptop virtually silent, but they don't.
- Heat - yeah, this thing gets pretty toasty, even when the fans are running full pelt. I quite often try and use laptops on my knees, propper up in bed. Even under moderate cpu load this would get uncomfortable. Playing a game could get painful. So probably some kind of laptop tray/cooler. Which kind of defeats the slim and light design.
- Gaming, not tried anything too taxing yet. Game I mainly play is path of exile, which it handles absolutely fine at full 3k res with everything at max. Might want to tone this down if playing in full parties with lots of flashy skill effects though (3k res also makes the fps/ping monitors virtually unreadable). As Ive been playing on integrated graphics at min setting recently it is a huge jump though. Also been playing Borderlands 2 since it was on humble bundle. Again can run it at native res with everything on, but am running it at 1920 x 1080 to keep things smoother and not max out the gpu.
- Wifi - this is my serious issue with the machine, and the thing that had me considering returning it. If I use the machine in my bedroom, which is only a couple of walls away from the router, I get frequent dropouts (Not just when using the gpu or under heavy load). Even when still connected my signal is very poor, at times with a lot of fluctuation. If I sit next to the router then it is fine, and I get 80-90 Mb/s download speed, and even better wired. Don't have issues with any other devices (old laptop, phone, tablet) in my room. I've updated the drivers, tried every setting tweak that I can find, and tried changing router settings. Nothing seems to fix it permanently (Keep finding something that looks like it has worked, but in fact was just the restart that had helped)
Switching to 5ghz might help - but my flatmates might not be able to connect their devices then, not sure how much of our kit is capable.
If it is an antenna position or heat issue then I may try adding a usb wifi dongle - at least it would be external then. If anyone has any more tips to try I'd be very grateful. - Other odd bits, touchpad is ok, had issues with gestures/multitouch, but don't use them much anyway, and mainly sue a mouse. The gaming centre shortcut on the Fn/f4 key is actually fairly useful, especially to get the monitor up while I'm testing temps/fans/noise. Power port is in a slightly annoying position, especially with the right angled power connector (and the cable is pretty short).
All in all, apart from the wifi issues I'm pretty happy with it (Even getting used to windows 8 slowly). Not sure if I could honestly recommend to a friend yet though as the wifi issue is quite significant, and to a lesser extent the heat issues.

Have you try something with RAM? i really need to know what to buy...... 1600MHz? 1866MHz? 2133MHz?
-
I bought a 2133Mhz kit - I just haven't installed them yet. Right now I'm working on benchmarks with Dual Evo 850 SSD installed. I'm benchmarking 1 thing at a time to be thorough. I should have a full review of the unit and all my upgrades by the end of the week.
