Best to do warranty service since your drives could be potentially defective.
IRST shouldn't be the one that caused the issue.

Thank you! I'll activate the warranty
Thought this could be a common issue. Apparentely not.

Typing this on my GS70 (970M 3GB version) right now, it arrived yesterday around noon so I've been using it for around a day now. I am in love with this machine, it's a beast!

I don't really have any complaints other than the bloatware that comes pre-installed on the laptop but that's easily fixed. Ideally I'd like the Windows key back on the left side of the keyboard too but it's a very minor issue that's very easy to adapt to.

It's silent and performs really well even off battery and it completely demolishes anything I throw at it. I primarily bought this laptop to act as a portable Oculus Rift demo machine (my thesis is on virtual reality so I needed a way to demo at college) and after demoing some stuff to several people earlier today I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Do you find the screen unsatisfying in anyway? Many people have completely written off the GS70 because it uses a TN panel and the GS60 uses an IPS panel.

I don't have any issues with the screen but then again I haven't really seen the GS60 in person for comparison.

Well I can speak for myself here. I was a Macbook Pro 15'' Retina user for 2 years and that had the best IPS screen I ever had the pleasure of laying my eyes on.
Surely the GS70's TN panel isn't as good but I found the transition to be very smooth and I never thought of returning the laptop based on that. There are things it does better than the IPS panel like dealing with glare and responsiveness, as others are worse like color richness and deep blacks. But it's very good for a TN panel and not much worse than the retina I was used to.

Hey Zazibar, congrats on your purchase! Could you check on cpu/gpu temps during gaming? I 've seen reviews about the previous generation getting very toasty, but I may be considering something portable instead of brick-tank-like, and Maxwell is supposed to run cooler. :D

Thanks everyone for the answers I was looking for. I'm hoping to get my GS70 6Gb in a few wks. The wait is killing me and causing to think if I should change models or even cancelling, lol.

Congrats! Let us know what you think about it! I would say stay the course for the original reasons you picked the GS70. Otherwise, if you're like me, you'll always be doing too much thinking and swapping back and forth between models and brands so much that you'll never purchase anything. XD I found my answers for the temperatures from XoticPC's and GenTechPC's reviews on Youtube. Very good for the form factor (80C CPU and 78-80C GPU), and the temps will probably be even lower with IC Diamond! The 970m is definitely a cool chip.

Im looking at a UK purchase, but id really like 6gb. Everywhere seems to stock the 3gb. Overclockers are the only people that have suggested they might stock around end of November. Ive also tried scan, and saveonlaptops, and there's always amazon. Anyone else got any ideas for uk purchase? Am i missing somewhere to check? Or has anyone any info on the 6gb in the uk? Anyone repasted? What are the chassis temps like before and after? Am i right in thinking a 6gb laptop would run cooler than a 3gb (when programs used the extra 3gb) as the processor wouldn't be working so hard?

Thanks, I'll do a mini review when I get it. Waiting this long sucks and causing me to have second thoughts. Part of me thinks I should upgrade my desktop 580 SLI instead since I gaming more on my desktop than laptop but my impulsive side won out, lol.

Just had aresponse back from Scan:

"At the moment we are currently awaiting on MSI to confirm our price levels and when the 6GB versions are going to arrive here at SCAN.

As soon as MSI give us further updates with this information confirmed, we will be able to start listing the 6GB editions on the website."

Which suggests they defo will stock the 6gb in the future. I think I'll wait a few weeks...

Posted this in the wrong thread earlier but here goes again. I have a GS70 with a 970m and love it but I'm worried about how much heat it's putting out. I pretty much hit a max of 88C with everything maxed in whatever I play. The games run fine but i'm worried about the temps. What are these cards rated at and should I be worried?

Think they should be good til about 100 degrees c? Maybe 105? I think you can modify the boost rate and temps etc that it switches on/off. Am sure i saw a post on the official msi forum about that... Might shave a few degrees off if you're worried?

Siperiea, thanks for the info I'll have to look into it.

I've primarily been a desktop guy so i kinda have to recalibrate my mindset for mobile computing. Other than the heat i love this laptop. It gets a little loud but the speakers or headphones take care of that.

Do you have a laptop cooler or prop the laptop up? Someone in here did a DIY bunch of small fans and it helped cool his GS70 870m that you might want to take a look at. Sorry you'll have to search for it in this forum.

    My take on the iRST:

Is it a must have software > No.

    Should you install it> Yes.

If you have a single drive AHCI system the installing the f6 version driver only of the RST manually in Device Manager>Ide ATA/ATAPI controllers will improve performance with Native Command Queing.Improved AHCI performance can help deliver longer battery life with Link Power Management can reduce the power consumption of the chipset and Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive.

On Raid arrays installing the iRST software will allow write back. After write back is enabled the RST is no longer needed and can be removed if desired.

    I concur with WhatsThePoint.
We've never encountered any issues with IRST, in some cases an issue could be triggered by NTFS driver issue in the BIOS, but not IRST's fault.
Best to update to the newest BIOS/EC should you encounter any issues.

The temperature will be limited to 88C but not higher, however this indicates a "throttling" at work since the GPU could perform better by generating more heat.
Therefore, if you encounter any issue due to graphical settings then you can try one step down at a time to see if symptom improves.
But if you are not having any issues with the game that you are playing then your settings are okay.

I've just noticed that MSI only list on their website the red edition as having the 6GB as a possible option (3GB/6GB), whereas the black (and silver) are both only listed as having the 3GB. Dunno about anyone else, but I'm not particularly fussed for a red laptop. Im sure it's nice and everything, but not for me... Think I'll be getting the 3GB black version. Pity as there were some good offers the other week...! I'll maybe wait another couple of weeks or so, just to see if that info is wrong.

hi! I just saw a video from gentech about this laptop. when I compare both gs70 with GTX 870m and 970M I saw a big improvement in terms of heat here. is this mean that the new gs70 with 970m will not throttling like 870m version?
and is that 150w power brick really enough for this laptop or should I buy a 180w power brick?

I think max power draw for the 970m is 148.5w, so just sneaks in under the 150w power brick. Throttling entirely depends on what you're doing with the laptop - just browsing will be fine, most games are fine. If you're running gpu and cpu benchmarks and stress tests you may experience throttling - based on what ive read... What i mean is you probably won't get much throttling on 970m in real life. We're still waiting on some proper reviews though...

    Hello fellow NBR'ers.

I'm in the middle of the hassle of finding a new laptop that fits all my requirements, as always, this is quite a task.

I was hoping to buy the new series og Asus 15" gaming laptops (gx500) said to hit the market this fall, but they are now delayed for long for me to wait for them. I then considered the gs60, but was put off by the noise of it, and now I'm here.

What draws me, is the nvidia 970m graphics and the slim design, and good build quality.

But i can't believe this laptop only comes with a bad TN screen? Does anyone know or have qualified guesses, if there will soon be a model with a better screen? Also, obviously when you buy a laptop with this amount of power, the fans need to be whirring quite a bit, but how noisy is this laptop, really? It's hard to find reviews that are not only marketing reviews.

    Hope someone can help, thanks.

@ lapatata - re: screen - might be an option for a reseller to switch the screen for you, perhaps a 3k/4k version (but this will add to cost & heat/fan noise) will come available. I havent seen any reports of an awful screen - apparently its one of the better TN panels. You might also be able to swap the screen yourself (google). Re: heat/noise - Have a look at the gentech and xotic reviews of gs70 2qe for noise (bear in mind readings are taken right next to exhaust port).

We have not seen any upcoming models in the GS70 line that will have any different screens. The GS60 will have some 4K IPS versions soon, but if sound does bother you on that like you mentioned it would rule those out.

These models are a little on the louder side while under load, its one of the trade offs of being so slim.

Yeap, ExoticPC has these options when it comes to the screen. I'm not sure if they will make any difference or not but I'll find out whenever mine comes in since i selected the 3rd option.

    17.3" FHD 16:9 "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Glossy Screen w/ 90% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080) ( + 149 )

Wish xotic were based in uk also... We don't have anything like this. Would order from them in a flash, but import duty and potential complications with returns make me a bit wary. Had anyone had experience doing this (delivered to uk bought via xotic)?

Yeah me too, but we dont have anything like Gentech (sorry Kevin - first one that sprang to mind was Xotic, no offense intended) or Xotic in the UK. Places sell the GS70 over here, but its the bog standard configuration with no options for approved reseller upgrades (repaste, screen, ssd upgrades etc). I think I could handle those myself, but I'm at a stage in my life where my spare time is precious and I dont mind paying someone to do that for me. If I have to, no bother but the option would be nice. That's all I was saying. You guys are lucky to have the option of reputable resellers that offer these kind of options. All we get over here is the basic choice in a sealed box.

Can somebody tell me if the G70 Stealth Pro's that are shipping with the 970m can use standard mSATA drives? I have two Crucial 512gb mSATA drives that I would want to immediately install but not sure if the G70 Stealth Pro can accept these or if I must have the newer m.2 standard.

    Thanks for any assist,

Can anybody comment on either the matte 72% gamut custom screen or the glossy 90% gamut custom screen that's available with the Stealth Pro from certain vendors?

I'm trying to decide whether it would be worth it to go the custom route for the glossy 90% screen or just order a Stealth off of Amazon prime (which would be much more time effective for me).

But I do quite a bit of video/photo editing and am wondering if the higher color gamut would really make that much of a difference over the stock TN panel that comes with the Stealth Pro.

I also prefer glossy for the same visual design reasons as the colors are way more vibrant typically...

So has anyone got the custom screen(s)? If so, what do you think?

I have the version with the 870M and my GPU fan seems to be running 80% of the time. Even when Iam not gaming and the GPU indicator is white. GPU temp is 32 degrees celsius. The white led to indicate gpu seems to be become blinking red from time to time...

If you're patient I'll be able to answer your question within a week or two. Supposedly ExoticPC placed their order with MSI for the GS70 -099 in but they do have -098 in stock I believe and I got the 72% Gamut version since it was Matte and I can't stand glossy.

Well I went ahead and ordered the stock GS70/970m machine from Amazon Prime .. my apologies to the various boutique builders I've talked with but I just couldn't handle the build time ... (thanks to those knowledgeable folk who spent time with me on the phone, though) ...

I checked out some stock configs local at Fry's and MicroCenter and found the stock screen to be actually quite good (which was one of my hang ups/concerns) ... the matte finish not being nearly as "blurry" as typical matte finishes and with surprisingly good color/contrast/sharpness (much better than the Asus machines around it) ...

I'm going with 3x 512gb mSATA in RAID 0 and also bought a 2tb mechanical (Seagate) that I hope fits okay (it's 9.5mm thick) ...

I do tons of audio/video work so wanted a pretty beefy SSD array and hoping the 2tb mechanical fits okay as it will be the perfect compliment in so far as backup purposes go ...

Will probably have tons more questions for this thread once it arrives in a day or two ...

    ;-)

I've been using 2x 512gb mSATA's in my current Gigabyte P35G v2 lappy and it's been a really solid 1TB Raid 0 array for the past five months; I love the speed and the storage... so I'll be pulling those two SSD's from the Gigabyte and then putting the 128gb SSD that comes with the Stealth pro over in to the Gigabyte as it's new system drive (which might help me sell it a little easier).

But since the Stealth Pro has 3 mSATA slots, I figured why not go ahead and add a third 512gb Crucial M550 for a 1.5tb array ... not sure if I'll notice the speed difference as the dual disc array is already pretty fast but it's nice to know I'll be able to keep large project related HD video files on the main array and not have to worry about using mechanical for anything but daily imaging of the system array. Plus, my Steam install is approaching 400gb with all the games I like to keep installed and so the more space the better on the SSD array.

I will say this about the Gigabyte P35G v2 ... it has been a supremely solid machine over the past four months and the only reason I'm giving the Stealth Pro a test run is that I'd like the 1080p experience to be a bit larger (the screen) and the keyboard on the P35G just isn't up to multi-hour, 120+ WPM writing assignments, which is something else that I am always involved in ... it's a decent keyboard but a bit cramped and "flimsy" when compared to the Stealth Pro's keyboard, which is pretty ace ... also, I really wanted the 880m Gigabyte when I first bought the P35G but it wasn't available and since the 970m is both faster *and* cooler than the 880m, I figured the Stealth would be worth a try...

Holding on to the Gigabyte for the first couple months with the MSI machine just in case but as far as my hands on demo with the Stealth, I really liked it. And I didn't really find the track pad as bad as so many people seem to indicate ... not great but certainly usable ... I prefer dedicated/demarcated left/right click buttons but hey ...

    Anyway, more later ...

What are the m.2 ssd options for this? I thought the toshiba (factory) ones looked a bit shorter than 'normal' - does anyone have any links to something to get me going? Ideally available in UK, but grateful for any help...

Edit : Something like this should be ok?

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/250g...-read-540mb-s-write-520mb-s-512mb-cache-97k-7

Two in raid0, use the toshiba as a backup drive and chuck another 1tb ssd instead of the hdd?

I have the 970 version but had the same issue. Turns out it was MSI Afterburner in my case. Having it opened caused the laptop to switch to the gpu intermittently and rev the fan up a bit. Check to make sure you don't have some sort of monitoring software that's causing the issue.

Also thanks for the info on GPU temps Kevin@GenTechPC. Decided to go ahead and keep the laptop because I have absolutely no issues in game when the GPU is throttling. Going to try a couple cooling solutions just for the hell of it even though i'm getting great fps in game.

What version do you have, your temps and go into detail on GPU throttling. What game were you playing when the GPU throttled?

How does a GPU throttle and what causes it to? Hot temp?

I have the the 970m with 3g vram. I hit temps of 88c when playing shadows of morder on ultra settings with textures at high. The only other times i hit that temp is when using 3dmark. Kevin@gentech suggested that perhaps it was throttling and if i noticed any issues in game i should turn some settings down. Don't notice any issues in game so leaving as is.
