    Hmm, with regards to the high idle CPU temp, I rebooted the laptop with several google chrome tabs saved (for subsequent browser launch) and the temperature still shot up after reboot. This time it seems killing all of my browser tabs and rebooting the PC might have done the trick. I'll see if temps stay where they should be.

    I've tried all of the games with the camera issue with vsync on and off, and it doesn't make a difference. I always get screen tearing with vsync off, so I end up switching it on with all games.

    What is your refresh rate set to in the Intel graphics driver. It should be set to 60p not 60i.
    That's all I can think of..

    It's set to 60p. No worries, thanks for trying.

    So my idle CPU temp is back up to ~70 degrees just after a fresh reboot, some light internet browsing, and nothing else. :mad2:

    What processes are listed while idle? Is anything listed as taking a lot of memory?

    I don't have anything processes running out of the ordinary, CPU usage is about 2%, memory usage about 30%. This is with just google chrome and some microsoft office programs open.
    70 degrees really has become the new idle CPU temp and the fan is constantly running. When opening light tasks, it shoots up to the mid 80s, whereas normally the CPU rarely exceeds the mid 60s degrees.

    EDIT: I'm also finding that google chrome and microsoft office programs now lag/hiccup occasionally, when normally there is never any.

    Whatever's wrong with my CPU, it's causing some major screen tearing in games, even with Vsync enabled. This wasn't the case before.

    Hi guys, just got myself a GS70 Stealth Pro, I have a few questions in mind. First the huge line of dots in front of the keyboard should be the venting or the speakers?- i do know that there is the hinge speakers which i am using. But what about the label of "Sound by DYNAUDIO" above the huge dotted line above the keyboard? Does it work or is it false advertising?
    And sometimes when i close the lid, there is a clipping sound, is it a problem?
    And last, my AC adapter creates a buzzing sound.

    Congratz on your GS70!

    - The grill or the "huge line of dots" right above the keyboard is a large intake for the fans. The only speakers on the surface of the laptop are in the hinge.
    - Dynaudio is the speaker manufacturer for MSI. It's not some sort of software as I think you might be suggesting.
    - If the clipping sound is coming from the hinge when you close the lid, maybe something is loose in the hinge mechanism or encasing. If the hinge feels sturdy, you should be okay.
    - I've never heard an AC adapter buzz, so I don't know. I doubt it's a big issue though. Maybe just something interacting with the passage of electrical current.

    Regarding my CPU issue, restoring my PC to a couple weeks ago seemed to do the trick. Whatever messed with the CPU seems to be reverted. We shall see.
    If someone has any idea what my issue could have been, I'd still be interested to hear.

    Thanks for sharing!
    But I have another question in mind, definitely the i7 4710HQ processor and the i7 4700HQ is different-not by a lot, but quite significantly. The one I got came with a i7 4700HQ, but the brochure I had from MSI states that it is equipped with an i7 4710HQ, did I just get duped?

    Generally, models with the 860M or any 700M series GPU should have the 4700HQ, models with the 870M should have the 4710HQ. Resellers like GentechPC and XoticPC have only these models.
    Yet, MSI seems to have other variations, including one with the 4700HQ + 870M, like this one on the Canadian Amazon site: http://www.amazon.ca/MSI-GS70-2PE-010US-Notebook-i7-4700HQ/dp/B00J03IAE6/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1411267981&sr=1-1&keywords=msi+gs70
    Importantly, which GPU do you have, and which CPU is specified on your retailer's spec sheet for your GS70?

    Check the specs you got from the reseller. Its unlikely to really make a difference but you should check what you ordered.

    Hi folks,

    Anyone heard the latest rumours about when a gs70 with the 900 series maxwell chip will become available? And is it likely to be the 970m or the 980m?

    Finally, and I know I'm asking for speculation here, but are there any rumours or evidence to suggest that the new maxwell chips may alleviate the overheating/throttling issue when it comes to gaming on this rig?

    My thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to buying one of these sweet machines.

    Cheers, Alan

    There is no set date, only rumors as you mention :) But there are some circulating that GS series will come packed with up to 970m. This might alleviate temperature issues somewhat as it is supposed to be lower TDP than 980m, and also lower than 780m.

    We will hear more news from maxwell in the coming months, as they are to be announced soon I guess?

    Hello again NBR,

    I have three Q's today.

    1. Is there anyway to downgrade one of my 3.0 USB ports to 2.0? I thought they were backwards compatible but a shipping label printer we use at work is not compatible with 3.0 so I cannot use it with my laptop. Also, my HP U160 portable 15.6" monitor is not certified for 3.0, but it is working, however, about every 2 mins the image on the monitor will become very pixelated for about 10 seconds and then revert back to normal. I do have a 2.0 Hub that I tried plugging both devices into, assuming the hub would run on 2.0, but the printer still complains that it's not 3.0 compatible and the monitor's condition did not improve...

    2. I cannot for the life of me disable my mouse from waking the laptop. This is such a simple issue and I can't believe I cannot figure it out. I have a Logitech M705 and am using it's SetPoint software. No where in the software does it mention waking the computer. Of course in the Device Manager I've already disabled the "Allow this device to wake the computer" options for all my mouse entries and also for all my USB entries but it still wakes the laptop. Twice before going to bed I heard fan noises coming from my laptop bag and discovered my poor GS70 had been woken up for who knows how long and the battery was down in the 20% range. I've looked through USB Composite devices, Root Hub controllers, HID-compliant devices, all the power/wake options are disabled and yet it's still waking up when the mouse moves. (yes I know the mouse has a power switch, and yes I turn the mouse off at night to save it's batteries, but it's annoying when I put the laptop on Standby and pack it in my bag only to grab the mouse to turn it off when suddenly the laptop powers back on). I am a Windows XP guy, so does Windows 8 have some new area or feature that controls USB devices waking the computer that is much different than how it was handled in Win XP?

    and,

    3. Where can I buy an extra power adapter? I like to have multiple adapters for use at work, home, and travel (snaking the power cord behind the desk, down the wall, over to the wall outlet.... it's just too much work to do every day four times per day). In the past I've bought cheap-o Chinese adapters from Amazon with very good success but the listings I've found for the GS70 don't have the correct voltage and amperage ratings. I went to MSI's website and I can't find where they are available for purchase. Even on Newegg.com they list adapters for the GS70 but most are 0.5 volts to low and they all are more than 1.5 amps short of the adapter that came with my laptop.

    My adapter is a 19.5 v @ 7.7 amps. This is the closest I've found so far: Super Power Supply® AC / DC Laptop Adapter Charger Cord for MSI GP70 2OD, GS70 2OD, GS70 Stealth; MS-16GA MS-16GC MS-1756 MS-1757 MS-1771 120W - Newegg.com but it is only a 19.5 v @ 6.15 amps (if it's really 120 watts). Alternatively on Amazon I found this one, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KXF1YN4/, and while it's amperage is closer, it's voltage is too low...

    As always thank you for the help!

    Regards,
    Huusoku

    Anybody else ordered some other power supply?

    Me to is looking for another one, preferrable original one, but they are all from USA which means high shipping and import charge. Is there anyone from EU who ordered original Delta power supply?

    Thanks

    EDIT:
    What about something smaller and weaker:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-D...Accessories_PowerSupplies&hash=item4cf46ce7bb

    I usually used lower amperage power adaptors wthout problems. But I do not play games, only CAD/photoshop when not on original one.

    When the AC adapter becomes overloaded, then the notebook will not receive power so you are going to notice the "battery icon" on the system tray.
    An overloaded AC adapter will not cause any issue since it has over-voltage protection, but it is going to become inconvenient when it's triggered intermittently.

    GS70 doesn't have hybrid power. Only the GT series do.
    If you switch to such low low wattage of power adapter and if it gets to perform that "cut-off" protection too often then it's not going to be enjoyable due to frequent interruption.
    I am curious to see how low the notebook can take before it cuts off.
    But the minimum wattage would be 90W as it's already 65W below manufacturer specification.
    This extra wattage is reserved for the 765M GPU therefore you will need to make sure to avoid using it at all costs.

    I am not an electrical engineer however I did have to take a few circuits classes and I know that it is more important to match the voltage than the amperage. Circuits will only draw as much amperage as it's designed to take, so having more amps is not harmful, but too low amperage will be insufficient for the circuit to operate and it should just not accept the charge, similar to when you plug your phone into some cheap-o wall or car charger and it says "this charger is not compatible with this device".

    At 120 watts I think it will be okay for simple office use but 90 watts is pretttttty low man. Watts is a measure of power and power equals the current times the voltage (P=I*V). So take 90 watts divided by 19.5 volts and you get only 4.6 amps which is significantly lower than the stock 7.7 amps.

    I do have a WattsUp power meter at home but this will only show us what our adapter is pulling from the wall, not what it's pushing to the laptop. At any rate, I'll report back with how 120 watts does including with gaming :)

    I know this laptop has some heating issues for many people, but mine is having CPU heat problems. I have the 037 with the 860m, and it stays relatively cool(for a thin gaming laptop anyway), usually no higher than 72C. But my CPU has been getting up around 80 recently. Anyone else have a problem like this or know what a solution might be?

    How long have you had the computer. If the heat has gradually increased you may want to check and clean the vents the fans blow out of. Get a can of compressed air and blow them out and be sure to get something in place to prevent the fans from freely spinning.

    Yeah I complained about this a few pages back. The CPU temp rise was very sudden. Normally it hovers around 50 degrees on idle and 60-70 on load.
    A system restore to a time prior to the sudden temperature rise did it for me. Still don't know what happened caused the rise.

    I did some research and learned that this is handled on the hardware level, and I checked our BIOS and it is not possible to downgrade only 1 USB to 2.0.

    Ok, I figured it out and it's a bizarre solution: You must also disable the HID Keyboard's wake feature. This is SO DUMB. So now the mouse is no longer waking the computer but also the keyboard... :< Ohh well, it's not too hard to hit the power button instead of a random key, so I can live with this :-D

    Okay, next question :-D

    Question: How can I configure the "Audio" effect of a keyboard zone setting to function when I'm using external speakers?

    I really like the feature of the keyboard lights to dance with my music. However I can only get this effect to operate when using the Laptop speakers. As soon as I plug in my desktop speakers here at work the keyboard lights all turn off. Is there a setting somewhere I've missed?

    Thanks!

    Can you guys check if you're not using your Nvidia currently? Look at my reply #847 (towards the bottom of page 85). Out of the box my laptop was configured to use the CPU's on-board GPU for most of the time. Now that I've switched it to the GeForce as default, my CPU temps have dropped nearly 20 degrees C while playing games. Unless you are playing a very demanding game -- which I'd assume the "auto-select" feature would switch to the GeForce -- you should notice a drastic drop in CPU temps while gaming.

    Let us know if this makes a difference or not, thanks!

    The high CPU temps didn't occur during gameplay. It hovered around 70 degrees on idle.
    In any case, I always check to make sure games run using the dedicated GPU.

    So what you are telling me is that this GS70 Stealth pro is getting so hot i could iron my clothes just by closing it? :) More seriously, what about using it for music production, video editing, after effects and modeling?

    They don't release such log to the public.
    Also, such option isn't available in the BIOS since it's a hardware implementation.

    Hi All.

    I recently purchased my (first) laptop from CybePort.de .. and in my stupidity and n00biness I didn't realise that the keyboard would be of a German layout. Being from Ireland, it is completely diffrerent to what I'm used to. It's usable as I'm a fairly competent typist and know where my English UK Keyboard layout is. But I still would like to have the proper visual layout in case my Wife should want to use the laptop.

    My question is... could I purchase an MSI Laptop Keyboard from eBay and replace the keys on the Stealth Pro keyboard. Has anyone tried this and is it as easy as replacing keys on some desktop keyboards. I have contacted cyberport.de and they informed me that the model I purchased only comes with a German Keyboard .. hence my suggestion ..

    Thanks,

    N

    EDIT: NVM - Just seen the price for an MSI Keyboard ... erk!

    Ahhh I see. Wow, that is very high for idle. Currently while typing this reply I am at 46 degrees C and have about ten programs open. I'm sorry if this has already been discussed, but I'm curious so I'll ask, have you called MSI, and if so, what did they say? I'd like to know if their customer service is sympathetic to their customers...

    virati, this would be nice, bummer it's not an option!

    My half-month-old unit runs 45-55 for normal usage or if it's warm in my office and only gets higher for gaming. So far I've used it for Solidworks, Photoshop, MP3 splitting and encoding, and one video encoding job so far and this machine is FAST FAST FAST.

    Going from my old T9900 (fastest mobile Core2 Duo made) with dedicated GeForce 9600M GT, one thing I noticed straight away is that the processor usage hardly goes over 20% load. With normal usage, it's always beneath 10%, averaging 3-5% processor usage. You have to be using a CPU intensive application, like encoding, to see 100% CPU (in comparison my T9900 could hit 100% when just using lightweight programs like CCleaner -- this GS70 doesn't even go over 10%).

    When you max out this i7-4710, basically you enter into another dimension where time stands still and hair on your head and arms stands up. It causes my eyes to do a dolly zoom when I look at it. The video I encoded was a 470 MB 1920x1080 .MOV > .AVI (DivX), and while I've not done a direct comparison with my old laptop, it only took 34 seconds which before I know was more than 3 minutes. Seriously, when something challenges the machine, it just raises the multiplier and powers straight through it. It's really an amazing laptop for it's size and weight.

    The prices should come down some day... but one thing I might look into down the road is altering the keyboard, if possible. I've done a lot using hot key tweaks, but I'd really like to swap the Windows key location with the Fn key. Mayyybe it's possible but I have no clue.

    ---

    Since I'm posting I figured I'd share a few useability things I've noticed now after about half a month of having the pleasure of this machine...

    1) Unless you are Shaquille O'neal, it is difficult to put the computer to sleep using the function key as the Fn key is at bottom left and the sleep key "Z^z" is the F12 key. I don't have the largest of hands and I cannot reach both keys with one hand. (my old laptop was lower left corner Fn+F2 which was very easy to use)

    2) The arrow keys are tucked away so neatly in the keyboard that it's taking longer than usual to learn where they are. In the past if I just sat down at my laptop, I could quickly slide my fingers over and feel my four arrow keys but now they feel just like everything else.

    3) I do a lot of programming and enter a lot of numbers. Having a full number pad was one of the largest deciding factors in going with a wider 17" laptop, however because useful keys such as Delete, Home, End, Pgup/down also share numbered keys in the number pad it's a real bear having to cycle Number Lock on/off over and over while navigating through documents. Yes, these keys also exist above the number pad, but even still you have to use the Function Key to access Page down/up. Perhaps I've simply not gotten used to this, but this keyboard is no way as easy/quick to use as a full desktop keyboard (where the delete/home/end/pages buttons are in a separate group between the keyboard and number pad).

    4) To make matters worse with the number pad, we have the right-arrow key taking up the normal space of an extra wide '0' zero number key of the number pad. Again, just something I have to get used to, but I keep missing zeros and have to go back to make edits.

    5) I read reviews of the track pad being crappy and this didn't really bother me too much as I use an external mouse.... But let me tell you, at times when my mouse is put away in my bag and I just need to turn the machine on to do something quickly, this track pad is so horrible that it's essentially unusable. It either works good for a few moments or it doesn't work at all. The cursor just dances around and won't do what you're asking it to do. Also, the left and right mouse click buttons are integrated with the pad itself -- something I never noticed from the pictures. This is a nice feature because now the entire area of the pad can be used for tracking, but, when you depress the pad for a mouse click it also moves the cursor! Very annoying as sometimes I'll have the cursor atop a cell in Excel and when I depress the lower left corner of the track pad, if I'm not careful then the cursor will move to a different cell before the click goes through. So you gotta be watching the screen, which when I'm hammering away with documents and doing data entry I usually look entirely away from the screen and focus on what I'm reading as I input.

    Let's see, what else comes to mine...

    6) I hear people complaining about the power port being at the middle-right of the laptop but this is absolutely not an issue for me. The fan has plenty of area to eject hot air and because the cord has a nice 90-degree plug, the cord never gets in the way of the mouse. Maybe if I was wearing shorts and had the laptop on my lap then the cord might be digging into my right leg, but otherwise it's a complete non-issue and I don't see why so many people are being so negative about it.

    7) My laptop is my work computer and I have a lot of papers on my desk. My old laptop had rubber feet at four corners and I was able to slide paper under the laptop to get it out of my way. But the GS70 has feet in the middle of the laptop as well as the corners so you cannot slide papers under it. I do of course greatly appreciate this as it's a larger device and the added feet give more stability to the laptop and it doesn't bow of flex when you mash down on the keys. So I understand why additional feet exist, it's just something I wasn't used to before.

    8) And lastly, the USB ports are so close to one another that if you have a wide thumb drive then you won't be able to use its neighboring port. This same issue affect the multi-card reader: Use a wide thumb drive next to the reader and you cannot use the reader.

    Hope some of these comments have helped you to decide (or not decide!! :( ) to purchase this AWESOME LAPTOP. It's both thinner and lighter than my old 15.6" and many many times more powerful! I JUST LOVE IT!

    Huusoku

    I thought I'd share what I'm using to assist with the unorthodox (for office/work use) keyboard layout.

    I've made a very simple Autohotkey script ( AutoHotkey: macro and automation Windows scripting language) and am updating/improving it little by little.

    These are a result from the lack of a Windows key for the left hand:

    Current features:
    Alt+E: Opens Windows Explorer
    Alt+R: Opens Run Dialog
    Alt+D: Show Desktop (disabled if Firefox is active so as to not interfere with with activating the address bar. Configure as needed)

    Code:
    !e::							; Alt+E: Explorer
    Run explorer
    return

    !r::							; Alt+R: Run Dialog
    Send, #r
    return

    #IfWinNotActive ahk_class MozillaWindowClass		; Disabled in Firefox
    !d::							; Alt+D: Desktop
    Send {SC15B Down}{SC020}{SC15B Up}			; Scan codes of LWin & D
    return
    #IfWinNotActive

    I'm trying to get the new Win8 Power Menu to appear (Windows Key + X) with Alt+X but so far can't get it to work.

    I've also remapped the second backslash key that is to the right of the space bar to open the right-click context menu by using MSI's steelseries Engine software (because the GS70 lacks a context menu key).

    If you can think of something else missing let me know.

    In addition I'm using Alt+B to turn the monitor off and I've restored the backspace to function as it did in Explorer windows back in the Windows XP days (actually go up a directory instead of backwards in 'history'):

    Code:
    !b::							; Alt+B: Monitor off
    Sleep, 250 ; Helps prevent key release interference
    SendMessage 0x112, 0xF170, 2, , Program Manager
    return

    #IfWinActive, ahk_class CabinetWClass			; Restore XP-type Backspace in Explorer
    Backspace::
       ControlGet renamestatus,Visible,,Edit1,A
       ControlGetFocus focussed, A
       if(renamestatus!=1&&(focussed=”DirectUIHWND3?||focussed=SysTreeView321))
       {
        SendInput {Alt Down}{Up}{Alt Up}
      }else{
          Send {Backspace}
      }
    #IfWinActive

    Alright, brought my old laptop to work with me and for fun I encoded a 470MB 1920x1080 .MOV file to .MP4 (using HandBrake, constant quality 20, 160 faac audio)

    Old system, Compal JHL90, Core2 Duo T9900 with Geforce 9600M GT: 3 minutes 8.26 seconds
    New system, GS70 Stealth Pro, Core i7-4710HQ with Geforce GTX 870M: 52.25 seconds

    Almost 4 times faster encoding speed. So crazy! The moment the GS70 starts working you can already feel it's much faster. It finishes the job before the T9900 -- the fastest mobile Core2 -- can even get to 28%.

    It's amazing to be able to use something new and more advanced than before, thanks to technological advancements.

    Guys I'm having an issue with my GS 70. I've been getting an Intel Rapid Storage warning about something wrong with my RAID-0 array.
    It says SATA_Array_0000 Volume failed
    I have the option to "Mark as normal" and the warning stops. Doing the IRS test it returns no errors and the computer is working fine I think.
    What can this be?

    Thanks

    I hadn't contacted MSI by the time I fixed the issue because restoring the PC to an earlier date did the trick and it was on my list of things to try if issues like this arise.
    I'd expect for them to ask the customer to submit a RMA and send the laptop in if they don't recognize the problem immediately.

    Any GS70 970m owners yet? I'm looking to pull the trigger soon and hoping there's a lucky person with one and willing to give their thoughts on it.

    Pre-ordered one from Scan.co.uk with the 3GB 970M (only version offered in the UK for now apparently), just waiting for them to get it in stock and dispatch.

    Sweet, please let us know what you think when you do get it. I think I'm going to pull the trigger and pre-order the 6GB version but need to talk to the retailer I'm hoping to order from to see if I can get any kind of deals or discounts.

    Will do! I might be slightly biased towards it considering it'll be my first gaming laptop but I'll be as honest as I can.

    Anyone? Pretty please?

    Should I take it to the store and activate the warranty?

    It may be a false positive. IRST is prone to problems (it has a history of them). If you're concerned, you can activate your warranty and contact MSI support about it, especially if you're outside a return/exchange window. They should be your first resort.

    You can also try running third party utilities for checking the disks, though I don't know how effective they are when it comes to RAID arrays.
