Good choice getting it done ahead of time. The CPU/GPU require a complete tear down to get to on these GS models.

I second that. HWMonitor, as well as HWiNFO64, are both very good tools. -
I've read other comments and reviews but I'm curious about your impressions of the 17.3 panel, especially compared to the 15.6, which I had for a while. While I liked the IPS I found the the matte coating a bit too harsh. How was it a good balance for you? Size vs panel type? Thanks.

Hey guys, I'm having this weird problem. It's very intermittent, but the USB ports will lose signal. So for example, I'll be dragging something within Windows using my USB gaming mouse and suddenly it'll stop moving for a split second, and regain it's movement. This will repeat for several seconds and happens very fast.
The best way to describe it is it appears like I'm losing my frame rates lol on my mouse. Trackpad works find so it's not the mouse and the mouse works fine on other computers. Wired or Wireless mice are affected as well as USB storage. All USBs are affected on the computer. Another example of this is typing on my keyboard. When it has this episode, it'll stop registering inputs or get stuck on an input.
For example, if I were to write, "PC Gaming is so awesome" it'll do something like this, "PC Gamiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggg" then wait a couple seconds and they finish with, "is so awesommmmmmmmmmme"
Super annoying. Like I said it only affects things connected to USB. The keyboard and trackpad work fine on the
I updated the BIOS, Embedded controller, trackpad firmware, and reformatted the computer. Problem corrected itself for several days, but now it's back, but far less significant. It seems to only happen when Chrome is in use.
It's so few and far in between right now I don't think it's a big deal.Last edited: Mar 14, 2015 -
Do you know why it is doing??
Everything is caused by our miserable windows 8.1 !
1.Right click on battery (right bottom)
2. Power options
3. Change Plan
4. Change Advanced Power Settings
5.Locate USB Settings
6.Selective Suspend and disable that sht
I can suggest in Hard Disk settings there is suspend after 20 min change it to never -
This also happens in Windows 7. I had to "un-sleep" and un-suspend" many items in Power settings to get my machine to stay functional after 20 minutes!
-
I appreciate this. I just got mine 2 days ago and I'm already looking how to lower temps. Although the fans aren't as loud as I thought they would be.

I want to buy a new laptop from MSI, the GS70, because it's slim and powerful. However, while looking on the shop's website, I saw two models that are approximately the same, however the price difference is very big!
Can please, someone explain me, what is the big difference between those two laptops...
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152727CVF
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152684
Is it only the +3gb of graphics card?
Because the price is + $500..
Which one would you buy? -
There is 2QD version with gtx 965m which runs cooler..

Hey all,
Got my GS70 w/ 970m last week. The first day I had it (3 days ago), I noticed in HWMonitor the battery wear level was at 4%. Now it's at 9%, and it's been plugged in nearly the whole time and not used under heavy load, no benchmarks yet either. I've ran two battery calibrations via MSI's tool but it only went down 2%, and it's now back at 9%.
I already have an RMA for it, but want to know what you guys think before losing it for a month. Any similar experiences, and any reason to believe the 9% figure might just be an incorrect reading?
Thanks in advance! -
|You should wait longer .. u cant just RMA it bcos of this.. forget some hw softwares.. use it for month and test battery how it stay last ... I heard battery time is just two hours tho ..
-
Hi Everyone! I've been reading this thread for months before I purchased a GS70 version 003 off Newegg Open Box. (2 stuck pixels and maybe a flaky HDMI?)
Has anyone had any issue with HDMI port? I an running extended desktop since day 1 and last night my second monitor went black. I spend an hour verifying and testing the settings. Everything checked out and I could verify seeing my monitor all but no image. This morning double checked cables (again) and monitor with a different device and all was fine. When I plugged it in again (which I tried numerous times last night) my screen came back. I thought I had this problem once before but it came back after a few attempts. Nothing like last night.
Anyway, I have about 2 days to left to send this back and wanted to get feed back from everyone.
Thanks in advance! -
For your case , try connect laptop to your TV ..
But if u said dead pixels I wud send it back immediate.. -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
It would depend on how much value you put into the 2 dead pixels and the HDMI issues vs the discount you got for the open box. It if was a large enough savings to offset it, then keep it, otherwise return and order new. Thats would be he main decision I think. -
Thanks for the quick reply. I am torn due to the $400 savings on the laptop.
-
I am ok with the dead pixels. If it gets worse I will replace the display. I am concerned if the HDMI port is my problem or monitor. Or if video card is going bad. Any diagnostics I can do to check the video card or port?
-
Hey there,
I was intrigued by the Newegg open box deals on the GS70... Until I read the return policy. Here's an excerpt:
"Should these items exhibit a functional defect following their purchase, the buyer (not the manufacturer, distributor, or Newegg) assumes the entire cost of all necessary servicing or repairs, unless otherwise required by law. These items are not covered by any 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
If you purchase an Open-Box product Newegg guarantees only that you will receive the product itself; accessories MAY OR MAY NOT BE INCLUDED with Open-Box products"
Make sure you go read that before contacting them regarding a return, just so you know what to expect. I think you could probably get it returned, but the policy is a little bit shaky on whether or not that will be possible. I also believe their open box items carry either no or a very limited warranty from MSI. I actually contacted them regarding this but I forgot what they said.
Sorry, but I know of no diagnostics you can perform, but I'm no expert. If I thought there could be a potential problem down the road, especially a serious one like yours could be, I'd return it. I was able to get a really good deal by price matching (I sent a lot of requests, most of them will tell you they can't go as low as requested). Also, IMO, save money by getting one without an SSD/just one SSD if possible, just buy your own. I did and I'm certain my setup is faster than their Super RAID setup (in practical usage, not just sequential reads/writes), and I saved $$$.
PM if you'd like any specific info. Best of luck, let me know how it goes
-
Thanks for the response. I talked with my retailer and MSI and they both agreed that the battery was behaving strangely, so I was able to get an RMA issued. That said, I am keeping it for now. The wear level is back to 4% and that is tolerable. As long as the battery doesn't go crazy or crap out entirely, I think I'll be good
-
Thanks for the input. I have been in touch with a rep and they will refund my money and handle the shipping at their cost. I assume the last person returned it because of the dead pixels. Today everything has been working great and for $1550 I spent I can easily replace the screen. Though as you alluded too, is the HDMI issue I had last night after 20 days of daily use may lead to more problems? Is the $400 savings really worth it to not have a warranty?
I probably would of returned it already if I didn't install the technical preview of Windows 10 on my previous laptop. And since I need this laptop for work, it will set me behind considerably. -
I just picked this up the other day (New one with the 970m) and rolled it back to W7. Everything went fine, except I can't get sound. I installed the drivers on the CD (Amusing that a laptop lacking an optical drive comes with it's drivers on CD.
), and from the MSI website, but there is just a red x over the volume control, which runs a diagnostic that can't figure it out. I even installed the soundblaster utility hoping maybe that would do it, but nothing. It is driving me mad! We're moving into an RV for a few years and this is going to be our on the road gaming rig for me and the kids, and, well, sound is important! Any advice or help? The sound seemed to work fine with the Win8 it had installed, but that also had lovely things like Norton (UGH!) and other crapware, and, well, I don't care for W8 anyway... I tried the W10 tech preview, but it wouldn't cope with games, just black screened.
-
Have you considered only installing W8.1 and drivers only since W8 works?
Download a classic shell so it looks like W7.
-Sent from my Galaxy Note 4 using Tapatalk -
I wud recommend install Win 8 not 8.1 ...
I use Win 8 and I runs without problems ... I had so many problems with 8.1 graphics etc.. -
I have no issues with 8.1 on my laptop. Guess this is YMMV kind of thing.
-Sent from my Galaxy Note 4 using Tapatalk -
Just got mine, but it uses the discrete 970M instead of the integrated when browsing the web and doing other simple tasks. How can i change it to make the integrated default GPU?
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
You can get into Nvidia Control Panel and adjust the settings under Manage 3D settings. -
I'd like Optimus to regulate it so I don't have to switch manually though. But it doesn't seem to be working properly atm. Soloutions? And the colour of the powerbutton didn't change when i set main GPU as the integrated either.
Thanks -
Strange as google chrome browser is set auto by default Intel HD Graphics..

It's fine now, seems like it sorted itself out.

There is always a risk to open box items, but in my experience its worth the risk. I have probably saved 10K over the years from open box stuff. Most places will honor a return of a faulty unit, so I usually don't eat any costs other than a few bucks to ship it back hear and there. Amazon's warehouse deals always has some pretty amazing deals as does newegg. But sometimes, like you said, open box issues that happen right away can often lead to more issues down the road. If I were in your shoes, I would send it back... if you are still looking to save some dough, then amazon has an open box deal here http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list..._used?ie=UTF8&condition=used&m=A2L77EE7U53NWQ
I believe it's the same model. -
I have had this issue before. First check to see what the audio device is. Usually, it's realtek and all the stuff about dyna audio and sound blaster cinema are just speakers and tweaking software. The actual audio chip is what's important. Once you find out what that is, go to the realtek website, or whatever manufacturer the audio chip is from, then download the driver for you windows version from there. MOST of the time, this has fixed my issue. But make sure you fully uninstall the driver you have in there first!

Turned out my monitor http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Simple-Monitor-White-Finish/dp/B00IEZGY7G HDMI went bad. I just assumed it was my laptop HDMI. So far so good. Thanks for the response!
-
On that note, I see from the MSI website that I can't turn off Hybrid mode. Just curious if anyone has found an easy way to disable this.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
There's no switch to disable it.
You'll have to disconnect the battery to disable it, which is in fact difficult and inconvenient. -
Hi guys,
I don't really know how to explain this but let me start by:
My laptop was having blue screens with different error. I tried to do some system recovery and the recovery ended up with failure. After that, I figured out that my antivirus was deactivated and I somehow couldn't reactivate it again. I tried the MSI recovery for re-install window and it was also failing at 1%. I ended up having laptop with corrupt window and trying to re-install manually.
Does virus may be the one who cause the fuss in first place?
I manage to find window 8.1 and found out that the window key is automatically installed when I install the window. But I was confused the moment I saw the original partition in Harddisc where I have to install window.
At disk 0, there is some partition that i dont recognised such as:
600MB Recovery
300MB SYSTEM
237.47GB PRIMARY OS
Disk 1:
912.55GB Primary
18.96 GB Recovery Partition
I do understand that we need to install window on 237.47GB disk 0. What should i do to the rest of partition? Should I format it like the primary partition?
Also what's the fuctionality of 18.96GB recovery partition at disk 2?
Is all the driver, utilities provided in MSI support website enough for making my laptop as original as I first received it ?
Cheers,
William -
Well, the difference is actually 20% believe it or not
-
Depends... My 15.6" Asus is exactly 2 mm shorter and narrower than my 17" HP/Compaq !
-
I am of course talking about comparing the panels here, no point in trying anything else as every laptop is different.
-
Hey guys, I just bought my new GS70 Stealth Pro-099 and everything is fantastic except for one thing...the advertised Matrix display option. I have three 1080p Asus monitors hooked up to the laptop...one through HDMI, the other two through Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables. The laptop does recognize all three monitors. When in the Screen Resolution menu, I see all four displays. I have the mobile display disconnected and I try to enable all three external monitors...no luck. It tells me to try a different configuration. I can have two of the external monitors and the laptop display enabled, that works fine. I can have the HDMI and one Mini DP monitor enabled or even both Mini DP monitors. It just doesn't work with all three enabled. In Intel's control panel, if I try to select all three external monitors, one of the other displays automatically switches to the mobile display when you try to select the third display as one of the external monitors. Even in Collage mode. I'm at a wit's end here. This is one of the features that made me choose this laptop. Is it possible?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
It's three (3) displays max through 2 MiniDP + HDMI or 2 MiniDP + Internal LCD.
Make sure to disable the internal LCD first before enabling the display connected via HDMI. -
Alright, what's the best way to disable the internal display? Through the device manager?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
You don't want to, and shouldn't have to.
If you disable it then you will lose internal display.
If you want to obtain high performance on the graphics constantly, then use an external monitor via HDMI or DisplayPort. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If you don't want the internal on while an external is connected disable it in the windows monitor options when the external is plugged in. It should remember that configuration and turn the internal back on when the external is removed but turn it back off when you plug it back in.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Once you have external display activated, then simply close the internal screen, then activate the last one via HDMI. -
Prostar Computer Company Representative
Or select the "second screen only" option in the charms bar (Devices -> Project) -
Trying to decide between the black or the silver version of the GS70. Anyone that can think of any pros and cons of each to help me decide? Thanks.

Hey guys I just received my gs70 2qe 098 yesterday ( love it btw ), and even though I did update to the latest elan drivers, the way this trackpad performs is just so odd to me. Even completely tweaked I still see very odd wobble of the cursor position when I attempt slower movements. especially diagonal movements. From what I can tell the one I received was boxed back in late october/november, would updating the bios and everything else make any difference? I don't expect a touchpad like on a macbook but I at least expect to be able to basic things without the cursor dancing around any time I need to make slower movements with it.
EDIT: So after a bunch of fiddling I got the touch pad within an acceptable range where I feel it's actually usable and I will not be reminded that it's horrible every time I touch it.
Downloaded the latest touchpad firmware update ( didn't even realize this existed!
) Installed the latest drivers AGAIN, and now it's actually acceptable. I can draw circle patterns in slow motions just fine, diagonals are about 99% fine ( there is some slight movement but I think some of this can actually be blamed on the texture of the pad itself which almost makes your finger sort of skip on the surface instead of glide ).
So I leave this here in so hopefully if anyone else has issues this will help them get it into a reasonable level of function and performance that one expects from a touchpad that isn't on a mac.Last edited: May 14, 2015 -
Hi,
Quick question. I've come across what I think is a good deal on a:
GS70 2QE-200US STEALTH PRO RED EDITION
(msi link: http://ca.msi.com/product/nb/GS70_2QE200US_Stealth_Pro_Red_Edition.html#hero-specification )
I can't seem to find much difference to a:
GS70 Stealth Pro-096
(msi link: http://us.msi.com/product/nb/GS70-Stealth-Pro-Crimson-Red-GTX-970M.html#hero-overview )
They both have 3 256G SSD drives, 6G GTX970M, 4710HQ, 16gig
Can anyone see a reason not to get the 2QE-200US?
Thanks. -
Are you comparing Canada to USA? If they both have the same specs, go for the cheaper price if that is available to you.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Or if similar go for the one that is local for cheaper warranty support.
