Well, we'll be finding out on Friday...I'm hoping they'll announce a new eGPU notebook and I can finally upgrade from my GS70.
-
-
I'm hoping they make something available with the top end GPU but in the same form factor as the GS70 ... for me, the Stealth Pro is pretty much the perfect physical design (and apparently, I've got one of the better ones as I never have any heat related throttling issues) ... I've used all sorts of other laptops since owning the GS70 and I've not found anything that works for me like the STealth does ... super great screen, fast enough for anything at 1080p, light weight and a super good keyboard ... the only thing that might sway me away from MSI is if EVGA lowers the price a bit on their SC17 ... cause that's one hell of a beautiful machine too ... expensive as all get out but man does it shout quality ...
-
I have a 6GB 970m GS70 6QE and I do love it but it just doesn't have enough power for me when I'm at home. I was currently connecting 3 external 1080p displays to the GS70 and using it somewhat as a dock before building a temporary GTX 960 machine. eGPU is definitely the best solution for me in the long road so if I can get a GS40/60 type of form factor with a quad-core and 960m/1060m and have it compatible with MSI's new, slimmer dock, I'll be all-set.
-
hey guys, i'm interested to get the new MSI GS73 with GTX 1060.
I read that the old GS70 have overheat issue. Since i can't find MSI GS72 owner's lounge, i decided to ask here instead.
Does the overheat issue on GS70 and GS72 already fixed? -

I don't know about the newer versions of the GS70, but mine (2QE, 970m, i7-4710HQ) has never had any heating problems. Sure, it gets hot (average 80C under heavy load) and it gets loud fan-wise, but that's the trade off for a thin form factor. But it has never thermal throttled on me. And I've never even repasted it.

Thermal throttling only occurs when temp hits about 90~94C so if you were at 80C then it's fine. -

it is very bad .. (was) I couldn't never stop calibrating that sht... alwasys been changing and I said ENOUGH
-
Really?
I'm a 20 year visual designer by trade and other than the obvious, slightly blue cast to the panel, I find it quite enjoyable as TN panels go. And with the True Color application, I find it even better (the "designer" and "sRGB" modes completely get rid of the blue cast).
...
But on another note ... I really love the exterior/chassis design of the new 1060 based GS73VR Stealth ...
...
Sadly .. I'm only interested in the MSI GTX 1070 machines and so I'm going to have to pass on the lovely, svelte GS73 and instead go for one of the more beefy options ... most likely the GT73 Titan ... quite fat compared to the Stealth but I'll only be carrying it to the office and back so no big deal ... my old GS70 will become a music server machine and also my main, all over the city, mobile rig (restaurants, bars, etc.) ...
From the recent static I've been reading regarding the new Pascal laptops ... it seems the GPU chips run considerably more hot than previous iterations; even the wide body laptops running the 1070/1080's seem to be having some serious heat issues ...
Just wish MSI hadn't gone with all the garish red hilights on the Titan/Dominator machines ... ah well, I'll most likely just paint those areas black ...

The 1060 should be a big upgrade to my gen1 with 765m

I'm with S1rrh, I want a Stealth with the 1070 as a minimum. But my 970 is still kicking so I just may skip this generation of GPU altogether.
-
In terms of going from 765 (gen1) to 1060 I should get 3x improvement right? Or potentially 25% worse than my desktop 970?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Yes, benchmarks show about 3+x increase and games 2 to 4x increased fps.
-
I don't forsee a Stealth type chassis coming with the 1070 ... I'd guess that the GPU is just too hot to adequately cool in a thin form factor ... 1060 is still a really great GPU though ... about the same performance as a desktop 980, which is pretty astonishing ...
-
I think the benchmarks are closer to desktop 970 but still stellar. No need to game on a laptop past 1080 anyway. I doubt a 1070 will get you 4K.
Realistically gaming on a desktop 1080 at 4K requires compromises. Have to wait for the 1180

mm best design is msi gs70 series .. nice flat slim design

So the SDDs finally got really bad and I had to take action...
Just an update for anyone who is experiencing the BSODWSC (That's Black Screen of Death With Single Char), that looks like this:
When this happens the BIOS is probably corrupt and you can no longer boot into the BIOS by holding down the Del key while booting. Usually rebooting again, without trying to get into the bios will allow you to boot into Windows. If this is possible, make a backup of your drives immediately (using Macrium Reflect or similar). Most likely one of your SSDs is failing. Create a bootable restore USB (you can do that with Reflect or similar).
Further you may be having random BSOD and Intel Rapid Storage will tell you that one of your SSD drives has failed. But you can't do anything about it because you can't get into the BIOS to update the corrupt BIOS or setup new drives for the RAID0.
So how to fix?
- If you are under Warranty send your computer in to MSI. But for me this wasn't an option because I use my laptop for my work everyday and can't send it away for an indeterminate amount of time.
Or
- Get the Windows Bios update utility (attached to this post) which allows you to update the bios from Windows, however this is NOT supported by MSI. Again USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
- to do this you'll need a copy of the latest BIOS for your computer, which you can download from MSI website. For me this was E1773IMS.10I
- download the attached BIOS updated utility.
- unzip, in the unzip directory place your BIOS file.
- edit the .bat file and replace E1773IMS.10I with the name of the BIOS file.
afuwinx64.exe E1773IMS.10I /p /b /n /r /shutdown
- from a dos prompt from a bootable Win environment run the bat file.
I was also having problems getting the computer to boot from the USB drive, this would only work if I removed all the SSD drives. However Macrium Reflect has an option to add a Recovery Boot Option, I did that. Then booted into the Macrium Win recovery mode, then ran the BIOS update from there. After updating the BIOS I was then able to boot into the BIOS by holding down the Del key during power up. After this I powered down, opened up the computer and removed the crappy SDD drives that came with the computer and replaced them with some Samsung EVO 850 drives, used the BIOS to set them as the new RAID0. Then booted from a recovery USB and restored my backup to the new drives. All is good.Attached Files:

Nice work! My story went a little differently and I'm pissed at my reseller at the moment. But that's another story.

This is a great point. In addition many game engines can now be set to render at a smaller internal resolution and output at 4K. Look at the frostbite or forza apex/ gears of war 4
So a 1060 with 4K screen render internally at 25% and call it

So what all this caused BIOS corruption ? an SSD? hmm weird.. or you corrupted BIOS while update?
You have few more ways to fix it.. get BIOS chip from ebay and easily replace

Is shame, that MSi has no key combination for rescuing BIOS
acer has combination with FN+ESC or CTRL +ESC ..one of these .. and it works that you insert usb with bios file and it will start flashing while screen is black and fans spinning..
Am pretty sure MSi has something similar but they won't tell it ... -
All I can think is the SSD corrupted it somehow. It wasn't during an update. Considering I had two of the three Plextor SSD drives go bad, I'm thinking they were the cause. MSI support was totally useless in helping. I would point them toward MSI forum posts with people who had the same black screen problem and the only thing I would get back is direct quotes from replies to that forum post that made no sense.

Anyone have any idea what did I managed to press that I have disabled my WiFi card? I was wiping dust from keyboard (with dry cloth) and now Wifi card is somehow disabled. I have no idea which combo did this.
Do you have any idea? -
Function +F10, airplane mode.
-
Not working. I tried all combinations FN+F1-F12 and not working.
Sometimes it is working, and than one moment it is not. Troubleshooter sometimes turn WiFi adapter back on and it works no problem until something happens - I have no idea what.
Today I had to use USB wifi. This is what troubleshoot shows (attachement)Attached Files:

It looks like software issue, backup your data, and perform a system reset/factory reset. -
I have formatted and did a fresh install of windows 10. Problem is still here.
Randomly it stops working.
Do you think it is Wifi card failiure? If i change it with a new one it would work? Maybe resetting EC controller? Any new ideas? Sometimes it is working, sometimes it is not.

It might simply be a bad connection internally ... the wi fi card is very easy to get too, BTW ... right up top ... all you have to do is carefully remove the back cover and check the connections to the Wi Fi card ... at the same time, you might try swapping in a new one.
When I first got my GS70, I was bummed because only the little subwoofer was producing sound and not the main speaker(s) at the top. When I looked inside, I found that the main speakers connector/header was completely unplugged and so I just plugged it back in and solved the problem.
Give it a shot with your Wifi card... -
Thank you. I definetly will check the connection. BTW where could I look for a new wifi card? Ebay I suppose but what to type in the search? Model and connector?
-
If any members of the trade care to say otherwise, I think the Intel 7260 WiFi / Bluetooth card is a safe bet ... I bought one about a year ago because the Bluetooth has never worked with my Killer network card that shipped with my GS70 but I never installed the Intel card since I found I never use Bluetooth. If you'd prefer one of the "Killer" network cards, then check with some of the members here who work with Xotic or GenTechPC for specifics. I've never found anything particularly special about the Killer cards, myself.
Here's a link at Amazon, it's $25.00: Intel 7260 Wifi/Bluetooth
Here's a picture:
...
And here is what it looks like installed (assuming most GS70's use the same basic type of card):
...
You should open your machine to visually insure that this is the same sort of card used (not the brand but the size and connectors). You'd just need to ensure that one, the card is first properly seated in it's slot and two, that the two radio antenna wires (1 & 2) are properly connected. The radio wires just sort of "press" or snap on to their respective connectors on the card.
It's a very easy thing to do but be careful and take your time. If you have any doubts, I'd recommend taking it to a laptop service shop to let them test it for you.
Hope that helps...

Anyone replaced the battery on Gs70? Where to get it and what is the price?

It's not hard to replace it but you do need to proceed with caution. Watch out for ribbon cables when separating panels as well as disconnecting them. -
Hey guys mine GS70 6QE encountered HUGE problem with internal speakers .. ! They started crackling , hissing, sound going away .. even when is nothing playing they quietly hissing in the middle under screen .. When I am on skype it is disaster .. on other side complaining very very bad hissing sound from me .. I reinstalled latest drivers .. still same problem..
Any idea ?
Thnx -
There might be a connector loose inside the computer. You could open the back panel and just visually ensure that the speaker cables are plugged in correctly. When I first got my GS70, it came with one of the speaker cables completely unplugged ...
Good luck -
i had it over year n half and it happened just month two ago
