Does anyone know the manufacturer and model number yet for the screen on the GS70 Stealth Pro?
What about the manufacturer and model number for the two screens that are available as upgrades through xoticpc? They have a matte 72% gamut screen and a glossy 90% gamut screen listed as available upgrades.
Gentechpc also has a glossy 90% gamut screen listed as an upgrade. Is that the same panel as offered by xoticpc?

Just saying that if all other factors are the same an IPS, PLS, AAS etc should give you very similar performance even if they are not licensed for LG's "IPS" term. -

People wanted real details about scores and whatnot
I've started benchmarking just tonight. So here's some preliminary data.
3D Mark 11 - 7178 pts - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4700HQ,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-1772
Comparison with full fledge desktop (see "PC" specs in sig, or just scroll down the link) : http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/8104461 GPU stock on this result. CPU OC'ed to 4.8GHz though...
Temps : CPU went as high as 81*C on one core during 3D11 CPU intensive test - Test 5. GPU stayed below 85*C all along, but just so. The effects on the structure were noticeable even if those tests are of short duration : after the thee first tests the laptop was incredibly hot just over the KB to the left where the GPU is located. Didn't touch under at the time. Even if two very short tests only push the CPU with heavy load, after the second CPU intensive test (and last of the suite) the right side of the laptop, still just over the KB, was hot, though not as much as GPU side. Fans have a bit of whirring, but overall it's more on the "reference Nvidia" clean airflow side than anything else. Concentrated on gaming, I for one wouldn't really care about the noise, even with the speakers at a very regular level. Alienwares and G750s make more noise than that. Strictly "noise" speaking (not noise level), the rush of air is somewhat cleaner with the GS70. All this has been said, just reiterating for sample purpose.
Power draw : according to MSI's Dragon Gaming Center monitoring section, the power draw went as high as 169W for a very short second during the test. Most of the time it was topping between 130W and 145W. The power brick that comes with the laptop is definitely pulling performance back a bit, but I think a 180W replacement would do fine.
I'll keep updating the thread with other benchmarks results such as this. Results of said benchmark will always be linked same as I did here.
OS : Windows 7 Ultimate with SP1 - fully updated with all drivers working perfectly fine. No sign of instability. 3D Mark 11 was running on Steam Client.
Will probably post a guide on how to get Win 7 to work there too... I've seen quite a couple of threads here and about with people having a real hard time with it. At least on the "old" GS70 Stealth, that is. I can understand why : I've installed Windows on hundreds of PCs, and dozens of laptops, sometimes with a board/system for which drivers on the manufacturers's website were partial and/or outdated/buggy. Here drivers were pretty easy to find most of them - but somehow that laptop is reluctant to have Windows 7 installed and running smoothly... it's like every little ackward detail or specific error I'll get sparsely over tenths of installs, they all happened here on this one install. I'll go through the process for a second time when I'm done testing, I had to try and remove drivers a little too often to my liking before finding the right/best ones. Second time will be perfect. Then the guide... -
What really worries me now, after trying to confirm this matter at msi forums, is the amount of people having problems with their gs60's and gs70's, the one that really got me worried, has to do with a nvidia driver failure, and the only way to fix that (so far) is to return your laptop for exchangeIf I where you, I would hold my horses a bit to see how well they go before pulling the trigger. I just cant
, mine gets here next monday at night, I will surelly post if there is something wrong with it.

this is from a review in new egg:
"Poor Solution for Nvidia Cards
Pros: Looks good out of the box. This isn't something you would be embarrassed of sitting on your desk.
Cons: Will flat out kill the Nvidia Optimus drivers. Tried it on 3 different laptops, and whenever you launch any 3d application or game, it strobes like a disco, and crashes the program. YOu have to unplug and uninstall the drivers to get your 3D Nvidia cards working properly.
Other Thoughts: I wish someone would have mentioned this before I purchased. I can totally understand having to unplug it, or turning off the driver, but to have to do a complete uninstall to get your 3D graphics on your laptop to work? I would have thought better." -

4700HQ kept below 90*C. A couple of degrees below. Think 87*C was the top temp I reached.
870M went as high as 93*C. There seems to be strong settings as to keep temperatures below this threshold, I saw the card go down to 478MHz for a couple of seconds when reaching that temperature. 90-92*C will just throttle it down about 100MHz overall under specs... GPU side of the laptop, and under, got extremely hot. It was hot in 3D11 alright, but this time around it was just burning. But no panic though, because this is very controlled on MSI's part, they've thought that structure through quite right. Keyboard upper left keys were still just lukewarm when I was through the whole shebang, with a somewhat warmish tone radiating from the body. This extends down to the wrist rest eventually, but mildly. You can actually almost shape the heat spot as the exact size of the fan, which is a VERY GOOD SIGN of heatpipes doing their job. The rest just gets lukewarm by proximity. Very hot air exhausting, but it's not obtrusive.
Power Draw : this was totally not expected. Power draw got insanely high. MSI's Gaming Control Center saw up to a 225W load at one point, and there were many power peaks around 170W-200W elsewhere. Now while I know this seems to indicate that we need a 200W+ power adapter to feed this correctly, we're still talking extreme benchmarks here, and still talking of a power draw BELOW 150W for about 98.5% of the time. I think a 180W power brick should suffice for intensive gamers. I also think this is not a laptop to try and OC the GPU.
Under normal gaming/heavy multimedia load, this laptop will become hot on those left/right corners for sure, mainly the left of course, but it shouldn't affect use all that much, although I'll admit that the upper left keyboard will probably get more than lukewarm after an hour of gaming, but I don't foresee it getting unconfortable, just perhaps a slight alarm bell ringing in your head, warning you to take a little break for the laptop's sake - which you'll easily ignore for a couple more hours.I'll get back on gaming temps when I will actually game with it.
Next comes Unigine... This will actually give us a fairer idea of just how this laptop can game.be77solo, GuniGuGu, omgtehg37 and 1 other person like this. -

You should definitely buy this if it pleases you and is within budget. When I think back I can't believe I was ready to save 300$ to get a "twice as heavy thrice as thick" GT70 with similar specs. But at the same time the GT has got the 4800MQ, an optical drive, and better cooling performance, for less money... So if you're in this to game the crap out of your laptop, I still recommend the GT as the best choice - and because of the fact that for the same price as the GS70 you can probably find a GT70 with a 880M...pr0cl1v1ty likes this. -
Totally forgot I had this... This is a perfect comparison of what's equivalent on the desktop side to the GTX 870M.
These were made on a HD 7850 2GB GDDR5 (Gigabyte OC version), that was supposedly buggy according to my friend, but that I've tested extensively and couldn't find a fault with. So much so that I've OC'ed it to 980MHz core clock and 5800MHz Effective Memory, while stock manufacturer OC was 975MHz Core Clock and 4800MHz Effective Memory. Below are 3D11, Unigine Heaven and Valley results, compared to this laptop.
3D11
i5 650/8GB 1600/HD 7850 @ 980/1450 : 5536 pts
With the GS70 we had a score of : 7178 pts NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4700HQ,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-1772
Here we can see just how much 3D11 is CPU dependent just as much as GPU dependent... hence why it's not a faithful test of how much gaming power a system truly has, because there's just about no modern popular games out there that stresses the processor AS MUCH AS the graphics card. Some modern games are more CPU intensive of course, and a better processor will bring better performance, but still not as much as a better GPU can add in the first place. I have tested the HD 7850 on some test bed I have for troubleshooting parts like this... Asus P7P55D LGA 1156, i5 650 (2c4t) @ 2.0-3.2GHz, 2x4GB 1600MHz, Corsair TX650M, 5400RPM 1TB. Used some RAM from my PC as I don't have any to spare at the moment, running SPD clocks. So what we have there is about half the CPU performance of a 4700HQ, which has twice the amount of cores and logical threads, with better IPC (Haswell is a good 30-40% real performance over the old Nehalem, clock for clock), though running about the same clock with a 2.4-3.4GHz spawn. And we can see just how closely 3D11 sticks to the real performance of the processors respectively, with the i5 650 gaining 3505pts physics score vs 8097pts for the 4700HQ - twice the amount of computing power, and about 15% performance on top of that for better IPC (3D11 is too old to really use the best of Haswell architecture), at the same clocks or so.
Meanwhile, 3D11 doesn't stick that closely to real GPU performance, with the OC'ed HD 7850 gaining 6853pts graphics score vs 7196pts for the 870M. Unigine will show us a picture much more closer to real graphics performance here. Still, the combination of both graphics and physics in 3D11 shows us a pretty good picture of the performance of the system as a whole : with more RAM same clocks, with equal graphics power or about with similar core clocks but a little less memory bandwidth, and with a much better CPU still running about the same clocks, we get a laptop with 30% more performance than what would have been a good gaming desktop 4 years ago, with a decent system and probably the best graphics or so available at the time - say GTX 480 or HD 6970. Give the HD 7850 the old i7 920 with a very moderate OC and equal amounts of RAM, and you'd get a similar 3D11 score than the GS70 SP.
Unigine Heaven
HD 7850 @ 980/1450 : 595pts
GTX 870M @ 967/1250 : 556pts

Unigine Valley
HD 7850 @ 980/1450 : 1187pts
GTX 870M @ 967/1250 : 1122pts
View attachment 111108
Here we can see how that 800MHz more effective memory helps the OC'ed 7850 beating the GTX 870M. Still, about 1GHz more effective memory in Unigine should show more benefits towards the HD 7850, meaning the 1344 cuda cores over 1024 Stream Processors of the HD 7850 helps give back the 870M a little edge. No doubt a memory OC on the 870M would see it beat the OC'ed HD 7850 by a fair amount - say 75pts. Unigine just about doesn't use the CPU, so it all comes down to graphics power (and as always, drivers). With its clock and number of cuda cores, the 870M is a fairly good desktop card, it's the memory bandwidth that's taking a toll on performance, and that nice 3GB GDDR5 seems to be asking for it. Well... I elected the 870M because it was enough... not to blow up a 2000$ laptop all fees in.
So all in all, you get similar performance as, say, an i5 2500K @ 4 GHz with an HD 7850 manufacturer OC version, which still makes for a nice casual gaming desktop.GuniGuGu likes this. -

Good info ModRQC!
Although 8xAA requires an insane bandwidth and isn't really realistic of the card's performance in games. Not only that the system will run hotter with lower AA levels because of the higher FPS. -
Hi all,
Just got my GS70 Pro and mistakenly ordered an M.2 instead of the mSATA. That got me into the rabbit hole of double-checking model numbers and etc.
Just a quick heads up in case other careless folk are out there: seems like the Super Raid 2 is a SEPARATE MODEL, not a "feature" of all gs70 stealth pros. The Super Raid 2 appears to use M.2, while the other versions use mSATA.
Quick question: Anyone know the difference between the SuperRaid2 version and the 2PE-024US (like FRYS.com|MSI) ? Now I'm wondering if there are any other differences besides just the mSATA interface.
Overall, sexy laptop and I'm glad I got it. Still setting it up, was disappointed at the M.2/mSATA revelation but that's probably my own fault.
EDIT: Pretty much disregard everything said in this post. Look at post below for clarification. -
GS60 is the model which actually uses M.2 mSata , in this model there's place only for 2x M.2 mSata SSDs for Super Raid 2 -
There's no GS70 model with 3 mSATA ports are there?
Thanks for clarifying that. There are contradictory sources out there about GS70's features/capabilities. I'll edit my above post to reflect its wrongness. -
But at the same time it doesn't make a difference as long as the same settings are applied throughout all test systems. And then again, to be comparable to other Unigine tests out there I have to use the same settings, and usually Unigine is ran with all settings maxed out - at least, in desktop cards reviews. And my pre-existing tests with the GTX 780 were ran maxed out, so I had no choice but to follow along with the 870M. All this changes nothing to the point you've made, but are things I had to make with.
But I would add, as a real counterargument this time, that it doesn't matter that the bandwidth is insane, Unigine does show a much better picture of the real world GPU performance as a way to compare different graphics cards more than for the results in themselves, as the CPU won't make a big difference, just like it doesn't make much difference in a real world system running a single card at 1080P. Well, unless you're considering a dual core vs quad with HT or something like that, where the better CPU will help the best cards scale better.
And at the end of the day, I suspect my lowest fps in Heaven is about what the 870M would run Metro : Last Lights or such insane games with all settings maxed out. Unigine may not be demanding for the same reasons Metro is demanding, but still the picture is truer than anything 3D11 can tell us on actual games load. And we must not forget that 3D11 does scale with RAM, and SSDs, while games don't for the most part. That's why I consider Unigine to be realistic of overall GPU performance. As realistic as synthetic can be, that is.
Don't worry soon I'll post results with Thief built-in benchmark and in-game fps, to add some real world data to this. I did not run the benchmark with the HD 7850, but luckily I did play the game a bit to have a look at fps. I know it's not the most emblematic game I could choose, but it was the most demanding I had at the time I tested my GTX 780, so it's the best I have to offer.HTWingNut likes this. -
I've had my GS70 now for a few days, and overall very happy with it. I have noticed one unusual issue. Sometimes after turning on the laptop 3 keys wont respond or are intermittent (6,0 and i keys). After continually using those keys they will eventually come good and be fine until next time i start the laptop.
Anyone else have this issue?
There seems to be a firmware out, that vaguely refers to keys and mouse not working. But its pretty vague in its description, and for the life of me I cant seem to apply the firmware -
-
That's what I hate about notebookcheck.net the most. They test three settings at 1366x768 and then one at 1080p at the absolute highest setting which isn't really realistic on how well the card can perform if you just drop the AA to 2X or none, especially since most mobile GPU's are bandwidth starved to begin with. -
Yeah, I never understood the wide settings gulf in their benchmarks, I suppose at the least they are consistent for comparison purposes. I do like their reviews overall for the panel, heat, and fan noise measurements

Would someone with an 870m check to see if the voltage can be controlled via Nvidia inspector. The 860m can't so I suspect it can't ether. If not we can look at a modded bios. Would love to see how much we can under volt to save to heat but keep the performance.
Has anyone tried the same with the CPU. I'm guessing with the separate cooling fans it won't make a massive difference to the GPU temps. -
There seems to be confusing about super raid 2 in the GS70 versions.
But there is as far as i know not much to be confused about, Super Raid 2 means (at least for the GS70) that you have 3 mSata slots besides the 1 sata slot for the 1TB normal drive
To get this working in "real" super raid 2 just add msata ssd's until you have 3 of them (so if you have 1 of 128GB then add 2 more of 128GB) or do what i did and just remove the 128GB msata ssd and put in 3 others like 250GB Samsung evo's
Then make sure that in the bios the sata mode is set to RAID (need to restart once into the bios if you change this to raid) then you have another section "Intel Raid configuration" add all of them in 1 raid volume and then reinstall windows by booting a usb stick.. -
I'm soooooo haaaappyyyyyyyy

Where are your three mSATA slots?
edit: It's really frustrating not having a good technical manual for this laptop... -
Totally agree with your comment about needing a proper technical manual, my GS70 (Stealth Pro 2PE) arrived today...I have a few little niggles (seriously poor touch pad & mega-tinny internal speaker) but other than that its very nice, quiet, running cool so far but the 128gb SSD is already filled up with just my regularly played games. (last laptop had 240gb ssd)
So like you, I'm interested in seeing what's actually on the motherboard, weather my laptop has 3 mSATA slots, just the one & would I need to buy an adapter etc..... I'm also assuming its going to be a standard ultrabook style affair where the whole thing has to be stripped down & motherboard flipped over in order to get at anything making ripping that warranty sticker a pretty scary task after just paying out £1400. -

I'm pretty/very sure I got the pro version... GS70 Model 2PE-024US (ERP P/N 9S7-etc.), GTX870M 3GB, 16GB DDR3L, etc. Is it me or is that not the "MSI GS70 Stealth pro"?
I got an openbox deal from a retailer... The back panel says 2PE but... if this isn't actually the pro, I have a return to make...
EDIT: Just checked BIOS, there are 4 total Serial ATA slots. Right now I have 2 of them populated (128GB Toshiba mSATA that came with the comp, 120GB EVO 2.5'' form factor I put into the SATA slot)... So I guess it's hunting time. -
Also, for what it's worth, everyone seems to say that "unless you brick your mobo out of stupidity", MSI will honor the warranty even if the sticker is not intact. I haven't tested this out, nor do I ever wish to, but it calmed me as I broke the seal. I hope MSI doesn't change their mind and continues to honor their informal word... -
) to get some reality check and knowledgeable experienced buyers opinions, and then many other sites much more critical and consistent in reviews than NBCheck. I don't remember what laptop, I think it's one of Dell's XPS, they gave it like 87% mark but somewhere along the review they talk about drivers issue and heat crashes that were never fully resolved. Wow! Buy that laptop!! I kind of resolved after reading this that my time could probably be best invested elsewhere.
-
And not so much so about getting inside the GS70... see the pics.
Any model of the GS70 PE can accomodate 3 mSata right off the bat. MSI seems to be selling an adapter as for Super Raid 2 though, but I didn't quite get to the bottom of that yet. To say the truth I don't care about super raid 2.
For those wondering, here are the insides of the laptop, which you get to quite easily by removing all the screws at the base, and gently pry the plate starting at the hinge, and then down the sides to the lid.
About that warranty sticker, that info came from UK where European laws protect buyers of things just like this. But apparently MSI extends the courtesy to any customer, AS LONG AS THEY DO NOT DAMAGE ANYTHING IN THE PROCESS. And it is solely and purely MSI's decision as to what is "user damage" exactly....Blank3k likes this. -

can anybody tell me if something like this one:
150W GENUINE Liteon AC Adapter Charger compatible with MSI GT680R GX780-011US | eBay
fits for the GS70 (2014) edition?
if it is a dell connector then that one is to big. Is the connector of a GS70 smaller then normal for a msi? (because of the height?)
i really need a second adapter, because between work and home thats just annoying to carry around -
but my main issue is, I'm actually finding it quite inaccurate try to drawing a straight line and it ducks/dives frequently although at 1980x1020 its not too bad but should you ever drop resolution your straight line turns into a mountainous landscape - maybe driver updates will tidy it up but thats highly annoying when trying to do more precise jobs (Obviously, a mouse solves these problems)
And thank you for the pic, looks like a much easier job than I originally thought! well pleased. -
What has been the price for GS70 Stealth Pro? I live in Estonia (EU), but haven't seen them on sale yet.
