Well, I was expecting it today or tomorrow, since I don't have work and I would've liked to set it up. Also I might not even be home to receive the delivery, then I'd have to go down to pick it up. It just really sucks when things don't go the way you want it to. It just really ticks me off when people don't do their jobs properly.

Oh wow, I just found out its a long weekend. If my order doesn't get shipped by end of Friday, I won't see it ti'll Tuesday. Wow, lucky me.

, MSI just announced release of GX660R, not the GX660. GX660R is basically same as GT660R with, dual hard drive in RAID 0. Using PM55 chipset, aswell as having the HD 5870M, but here is the kicker, it comes with 1920x1080 pixel screen resolution. WOW, MSI really is trying to screw over early buyers.

    Which are you talking about?

I really would've preferred the full HD compared to the one on GT660, but I won't know if its good till I receive my GT660, ETA is Tuesday, Aug 3rd. I guess UPS doesn't deliver on weekends.

Also we still don't know when the GX660R is coming, my guess is somewhere near Sept - Oct.

That review was out for a while already, they just seem to update it to keep it on top of the latest news.

I find it odd how there are no video reviews yet, since the GT660 was supposedly on sale for 2 weeks already.

Man i might have already have bought this thing if it came with a 900p LED display, 720p is ridiculously low (plus no LED backlighting????), and it used the same styling as the 640. By the way who exactly likes all these LED lights on their machine, I have yet to meet that person, but for some reason every gaming machine has them. I know 0 people who buy a machine because it has LED tacky styling, but a ton who won't.

If the LED lights are bothersome you can turn them off.
I didn't get one for the light show but the high performance hardware.
    To each his own.

The 720p screen I saw in this thread. Just sickening for this size point and any real productivity over long term use. Put a 1080p screen in it and now we are talking. Wish it used a 5870 over the 285, but still pretty nice but that is FAR from its weakness.

There is a second GX model coming out a little after the GT/GX660 called the GX660R with a 1920x1080 screen res for those that really want it.
I don't know when that model is going to be sold.

I quess from now on, I can assume the GX series is better than the GT, not sure why I thought the other way around. Maybe when the GT660 I am getting, gets old, there will be a newer GX model for me to get. Maybe I'll even sell my GT660 after 6 months use.

I think the naming convention is
    GT = nvidia gpu
    GX = ati gpu

or at least that's as far as I can tell

    Pros:
    • Very good performance
    • Excellent hardware inc. Blu-Ray player
    • Good overall comfort
    • Efficient cooling

    Cons:
    • Disappointing audio
    • Glossy display with weak contrast
    • Casing is too "plasticky"
    • Keyboard is not backlit

The overall performance and hardware of the MSI GT660 allow it to receive 4 stars out of 5, although it suffers from a disappointing sound system and display. The GT660 is nevertheless an interesting option for gamers, provided they can find it at a decent price.

So basically, they found out that the display has a contrast ratio of only 300:1. The GX640's display, in comparison, has a ratio of 517:1. The black level on this laptop is 0.69cd/m², and 0.34cd/m² on the GX640 (lower is better). What this means is that the blacks on the GT660's screen are washed out. It's already the case on the GX640, so this one must be pretty bad.

As for the Dynaudio sound system, looks like they got a defective unit or something. LesNumeriques reported constant crackling and hissing, even through a pair of headphones.

Finally, they tested the battery life by watching a movie with headphones plugged in, WiFi and LED light show turned off and the screen to the lowest brightness setting. They managed to get 2 hours out of it.

Okay, I have recieved my GT660 and I as I write this I can currently using it. So far it seems good, the screen is not super glossy, its bright and has a bit of a shine. Laptop is cool, even cooler on the side with no hdd. The one thing that I found was not true from my impressions are the Lights. The lights on the side of the screen, are acutally on the side of the laptop, not on the screen on either side. Hence it cannot be used to determine enemy fire in a FPS game.

Also, not sure if GT660R has it or not, but I did not recieve MSI mouse/backpack from XoticPC.

    2 more questions...

    1. can we upgrade the gpu in the future?
    2. this laptop has 3 slots of memory. if I am not mistaken, it says it support triple channel. am I right?

if yes, does it mean the triple channel is faster than the dual channel?

    thanks

So far I have experienced no problems. I am not sure if I have upgraded to the latest drivers yet. The build is excellent, but there is some slight flex on the touchkey if you press hard enough. There is not much difference is key spacing from my old laptop, except I do forget this laptop has the numeric keypad. Under little load, the GT660 runs almost silent, only once Turbo mode or the Cooling feature is turned on that it gets really noisy. The temperature is low, on some parts of the laptop, its cooler than room temperature. I got IC Diamond with it though. I tried playing Bad Company 2 earlier, it runs ok, but the resolution is causing some slight problems, since this is widescreen. One thing that shocks me is that there is no media keys, such as forward, backward, pause and such keys. Makes it hard to listen to music.

@stingbangle, according to the specs, it is upgradeable.

i like the old g series design better. This is way to over the top imo and it looks worse + it looks too gamer orientated. The unnecessary lights annoy me because they could have done the backlit keyboard instead.

thanks for the initial review. When you play game, without turning on the turbo mode or cooling feature ( I think turbo mode is a manual feature that can be activated by short cut key, correct me on that if I am wrong), how loud is the fan ? Can you hear the fan noise while playing game without using headphone ?

The fan noise is minimal without turbo and cooling feature. I just played CoD4 for like 30 minutes, it was fine. Not noticeable at all. Though I must say, the widescreen view is messing me up, maybe I am just not used to the new features. When I look at the screen, I see the hands are so small and so is the weapon.

    thanks for the info..

    one more thing though...

how loud is the fan while it's on? is it very very load???

    thanks

I don't know what you guys are expecting...high performance parts = heat = spinning fan = spinning things make noise... there's no such thing as a silent gaming laptop.

If there's anything you want to ask about is if the fan has an annoying whine or something along those lines

But more expection will lead to better improvement :)

I am doing research and thinking about changing the fan of the GX660 to make it more silent. I am still trying to find out the fan size of the laptop.

I just expect that I will not notice the fan running while I am playing game. It really affect the gaming experience when
    the fan is roaring :(

I do not know if the screen sucks, my old laptop was 3 yrs old with the old screens before HD. When playing games the visual does seem stretched horizontally. I can also slightly see the pixels on the screen if I focus enough. Other than that its fine. Also visuals look great, there is hardly or any distortion what so ever.
